seorang kawan tiba-tiba bertanya, lagi apa? rasanya lucu karena satu dan lain hal, tapi saya jawab jujur, "lagi kerja," pakai titik dua buka kurung karena mengira mau diajak main tapi sayanya gabisa.
ga tahunya dia bilang, "owww:(( apakah senang?"
freezing...

Thoughts on Marvin Lore - part 5
Been thinking more about Marvin's decision to leave Mars behind and come to Earth and I think I've come up with an adjustment to the whole thing compared to the earlier verison.
Marvin's doing his job, abducting people, probing them (kinky, I know), then dropping them back off without a single memory of what happened (though sometimes a few vague images bleed through, or... some dream-like recall, it depends on how intoxicated the subject was at the time) and he happens across a book they were carrying. Ordinarily, protocol is to return the possession as soon as possible in as discrete a manner as possible to avoid detection or suspicion that something is amiss.
It just so happens this book was an older text about political theory--specifically dealing with the drawbacks of one particular economic system that Marvin's society is intimately familiar with. He made a quick digital copy of the text and returned the book so it wouldn't end up "missing", then settled in while he waited between jobs. Home office would send down a new target for him to shadow and 'examine'.
While he waited, Marvin began reading through the text he had scanned from the book and found it compelling, especially since it pointed out so many of the failings of the system he lived under with not much hope of escape. Needless to say--despite the somewhat dry nature of the writing itself, it made a distinct impression on him.
Over the following days, he kept reading and learning and decided he might need to read more on political and economic theory. He tapped into the local information net--what the people of the third planet called 'the internet'--and began researching other authors and works that might give him a better understanding. Much to his frustration, he found that there wasn't really a single, unified voice or school of thought--but many, and all of them had varying degrees to which they agreed and disagreed.
That baffled Marvin terribly. He was so used to his society espousing that those in power--and those who spoke for those in power--knew exactly what they were doing, where they were going, and how to get there. The explicit confidence with which his superiors operated gave him no reason to question them... until now. Sure, humans weren't the most intelligent creatures. Hell, the irradiated their own planet testing nuclear weapons which various nation states intended to keep pointed at one another as a sort of global hostage situation. He had read up on the concept of M.A.D.--mutually assured destruction--and it horrified him. How could any society allow itself to end up in such a state?
At least they hadn't destroyed themselves yet. The 'international poker game' was still going and there had not been a nuclear exchange so far. Maybe they would figure it out after all--Marvin thought.
Work carried on: collecting biological data, experimenting on the steadily expanding genetic library, discovering new and exciting ways to make Terran and Martian genomes compatible. That bit was something Marvin actually enjoyed, though he would have enjoyed it more if he had been given the leeway and resources to conduct the sort of research he wanted to. There were several interesting facets to Terran physiology, some of which might be of benefit to Marvin's people--it just wasn't terribly profitable so his superior ordered him to stop chasing after it.
Having educated himself on how such a society operates, Marvin was able to start picking out certain signs of what was to come, identifying aspects of the repeating patterns. He used that to his advantage to sell what little he owned, buy a ship of his own outright, and leave. As he was pulling away, news broke that made his blood run cold. The planetary economy was about to undergo a 'correction' as it was always called. Those happened at infrequent intervals, and the last one had left him without a job for months. He didn't want to think about what was to come, so he pointed his ship at Earth and didn't look back.
Life on the blue marble would be a challenge. It was a completely different society. Marvin would need to learn and adapt fast. He adjusted his appearance to make the fact he wasn't local less obvious, and began working on how to integrate with Terran culture. There were a lot of elements from Marvin's old life back on Mars that were very much present on Earth, but from what he could discern, there were enough people pushing back against them, and enough different cultures, that no singular influence had dominated the others the way it had on Mars. Perhaps there was hope yet.
Maybe Marvin could help spread the good word of the new political theories he had been learning about, and maybe he could learn from others who knew the material better. He just had to keep a low profile. He had been pulled over by the Alien Affairs Agency before and they did NOT like him very much. Now, he would have to deal with them on a regular basis. Joy of joys... interplanetary immigration... made doubly complicated by the fact that the majority of the public still thought they were the only sentient life forms in the universe.
At least it was a different kind of complicated, one that wasn't drenched top to bottom in the bitter, sour, biting stink of his homeworld's trappings.

Atomic-scale probing of short-range order and its impact on electrochemical properties in cation-disordered oxide cathodes
Material synthesis The cathodes designated as Li1.2Ti0.4Mn0.4O2.0 (LTMO) and Li1.2Ti0.2Mn0.6O1.8F0.2 (LTMOF) were prepared through a conventional solid-state reaction process. Starting materials such as Li2CO3 (sourced from Alfa Aesar with an ACS purity of at least 99%), Mn2O3 (with a purity of 99.9% from Alfa Aesar), TiO2 (99.9% pure, Alfa Aesar), and LiF (Alfa Aesar, with a purity of 99.99%)…
