That being said, I am fully aware that its is based off of the Tanya Huff Blood Series and we all know that the written material and the visual material will have their changes.
I have to admit that I have not read any of the Blood or Smoke series.
(Not my picture)
So this is an open invitation to anyone who has read the books. Screenshot a passage and caption why you like it. You can either post it yourself (be sure to notify me @bloodtiesstilllives ) or you can submit it here for me to post.

""FOUND-IN" TESTIFIES TO 'PHONE BET SYSTEM," Toronto Star. March 7, 1934. Page 3. ---- Two Men and Woman Elect Jury Trial on Wager Charges ---- Facing charges of keeping a gambling establishment, Lew Kendall, 31, Vaughan Rd., Frank Burroughs, 45, Mimico, and Margaret Walker. 24, New Toronto, appeared before Magistrate Keith in county police court today. All three elected trial by jury.
The three were arrested by provincial police following raids on a New Toronto bowling alley February 27. Burroughs, Kendall and Miss Walker each face a charge of keeping a common betting house. Kendall and Burroughs face jointly two charges of recording bets under section 235 of the criminal code. Arthur Slaght, K.C., appeared for Kendall and Burroughs.
Reginald Meehan, 45, charged with being found-in, gave an address on Filmore Ave., New York city. He had given police the name of Murphy, he admitted.
"How did you happen to be there?" questioned Crown Attorney Frank Moore. "I met Kendall in the Roxy theatre on February 19. and he invited me to come out to New Toronto," answered witness. "What did you find?" "A bowling alley and a large office."
"What did you do there?" "I placed two bets and then drove home."
"Who did you place them with?" "Kendall."
"What horses?" "I'd have to see the list of horses running that day," answered Meehan.
"What happened the next day?" "The same thing as on Monday."
"And the next day?" "Same as before, except that I shot some pool."
"How did you place the bets?" questioned the crown. "I told Kendall and he spoke over a telephone."
"What kind?" asked the crown. "A French 'phone, we call them in New York," said witness.
"What tracks were your horses on?" "Hialeah and New Orleans."
Shown a racing paper, witness said he couldn't "just remember" what horses he played.
"Who did you give the money to?" "Kendall put it in his pocket."
Meehan swore that he visited the establishment on subsequent dates, "till the place was raided on Tuesday. February 27."
Woman Answered Telephone Mechan told the court that he had placed a "telephone" bet on a day he was unable to get out to the establishment.
"What number did you call?" asked Mr. Moore. Witness gave a Junction number.
"Who answered?" "A woman's voice."
"What did you do?" "I gave a series of numbers."
"Which meant that you were placing a bet?" "Yes."
"How did you know whether you had won or not?" pressed the crown.
"Kendall apparently received in- formation over the phone." said witness, adding that Kendall "announced" what he had heard.
"Did Kendall ask for a number when he called?" "No."
"Was the receiver off when he went to the phone?" "Yes."
"Did you hear Burroughs say anything?"
"He commented on the lack of betting going on among the customers," replied Meehan.
Crown Attorney Moore objected when Mr. Slaght pressed Meehan to reveal his occupation.
"Why are you here in Canada?" asked Mr. Slaght. "I'm here on a confidential matter," answered Meehan.
"What is your occupation?" "Do I have to tell that?" witness asked the court.
"He does not," ruled his worship.
"I never knew a man to be ashamed of his occupation," remarked counsel.
"Are you an investigator?" asked Mr. Slaght. "I have done investigating." said witness, adding that he "was in Canada properly."
"Are you here to get evidence of supposed wrongdoing?" queried Mr. Slaght. "On a confidential matter."
"A stool pigeon." commented counsel.
"You have no right to make that statement." decreed the court.
Meehan said he had spent five and a half years in a Washington hospital as the result of war wounds.
"Did you make reports of your activities?" asked counsel. "Yes."
"To whom?" Witness did not answer.
"How did you make out?" questioned counsel. "I lost, on the whole, a total of $180."
Taunted Armed Boy "One of the other boys told him he couldn't hit a barn door so he fired the gun off," testified Harvey Mundil, 12, when Gordon Mundil, 17, appeared on a charge of having an air gun.
"It struck me in the leg." explained witness. "It was a small cut," added the boy's mother.
Young English, fair-haired and short for his age, pleaded that he had fired the gun from a distance of 125 feet.
"I didn't know it would shoot that far, English declared.
"The parents ought to be prosecuted," commented his worship. "The old-fashioned playthings are being taken away from the youngsters of to-day, observed the crown.
English was remanded for sentence and the air gun confiscated.
Andrew Logie, 45, pleaded not guilty to a charge of drunkenness, expressing vigorously a desire "to clear himself."
"He was drunk and taking up the whole sidewalk," testified a York township police officer.
"Why do say he was drunk?" asked the court.
"He was unsteady on his feet and talking to everybody he met," said the officer.
Accused explained that he had been visiting a friend in the city and had taken a couple of drinks of beer. Questioned by the crown accused said he was living at a hostel on Sherbourne St. and receiving relief from York township.
"How long since you worked?" queried the crown. "About 18 months."
"My instructions are that you haven't worked for years and have been going on like this for a long time," said Crown Attorney Moore.
"I've been living on the money I earned in the bush in Haliburton county." answered Logie.
"What did you do on the way from the hostel to York township?" "I stopped to watch the centennial celebration at the city hall."
"Where did you get those drinks of beer?" "I won't tell because I don't want to get some poor innocent fellow into trouble."
Police produced a bottle of liquor which they alleged Logie had left on a lawn when he saw the police car. "
This liquor is dangerous stuff and it should be analyzed," stated the crown.
"I don't know anything about it," pleaded accused.
"Maybe your head is not clear." remarked the bench, remanding Logie to March 9.

Hi!
I have been following this blog for a while now and I love using it to find new podcasts. I was wondering, if you have time, what you think is the scariest podcast you've listened to or what your favorite horror podcasts might be? Thank you, and I hope you have a great day :)
I'm so glad to have helped you find new shows!
I don't really get scared by horror podcasts (not sure why. It isn't some "I'm tough" thing, I get startled by the toaster, and it's not like I never feel unsettled or concerned or icked out at podcasts, just not scared) so I'm not sure I can give you a good answer on that one, but I'll gladly give you ten of my personal favourites instead:
Alice Isn't Dead: The podcast that got me into podcasts. A truck driver travels the USA looking for her wife, who until recently, she had thought was dead. Along the way she has all manner of strange encounters, and sees a side to the world that few truely comprehend.
Archive 81: A young archivist takes a job at a remote outpost organising and digitising a collection of tapes. On the tapes is a series of interviews and investigations made by a social worker in the 90s as she becomes familiar with a bizzare apartment building. The archivist, naturally, has an increasingly bad time. Each season is part of the same story, but they're all a bit different.
Ghost Wax: Recorded interviews conducted by the last surviving necromancer, and various people who died under seemingly otherworldly circumstances.
Hello From The Hallowoods: Supernatural and cosmic horror. A powerful and dramatic entity visits your nightmares to relay stories of the people (to varying degrees of both human and alive) who inhabit the beautiful and deadly Hallowoods. What start off as individual stories quickly connect to a larger narrative.
Hi Nay: A supernatural horror following a young woman named Mari, who's babaylan (shaman) family background draws her into helping people with various horrific supernatural problems around Toronto. Formatted as phone calls to her mother telling her what's happened.
I Am In Eskew: Often-horrific stories from a man living in something that very much wishes to be a city, and a private investigator who was, in her words, hired to kill a ghost. Many people seem to agree this one is scary.
Janus Descending: A xenoarcheologist and a xenopaleontologist are sent to investigate and sample the ruins of a long-dead alien city, and discover more than they anticipated. The format for this one is really clever: you hear her audio logs first to last, and his last to first, and the story is all the more heartbreaking for it. I'd recommend listening to the supercut.
The Lost Cat Podcast: A man befriends strange entities, loses bits of himself and drinks an awful lot of wine while looking for his cat. Soft and cosmic horror.
The Moon Crown: The shortest on this list, but also one of the most fascinating. A disgraced scribe living in a city of humans, beasts, and other bizzare entities, begins to recount recent happenings, and actions she has a hard time explaining, on broadcast. But the people she's hoping to reach might not be the ones listening.
The Silt Verses: In a modern world where gods are plentiful, both illicit and commercialised, two disciples of an outlawed river god go on a pilgrimage.
Although, maybe some other listeners can help me out and share what scared them?
#Please do note that these are not necessarily the *best* horror podcasts. They're my favourites.#audio drama#alice isn't dead#archive 81#ghost wax#hello from the hallowoods#hi nay#i am in eskew#janus descending#the lost cat podcast#the moon crown#the silt verses#Or like. The Toronto Police Service (TPS) escalated their campaign to crackdown on and suppress protests against the Gaza genocide last week with the announcement of a second arrest in relation to a March 7 protest. In addition to mischief charges which could bring up to 10 years in prison, the two demonstrators are facing charges of “disguise with intent” for wearing medical masks which protect from COVID-19 and other infectious diseases during the protest. This latter “offence” also carries a maximum sentence of a decade in prison.
“While demonstrations may end, investigations into criminal activity continue and we pursue all leads to hold individuals accountable,” Toronto Police Chief Myron Demikw declared in a statement Tuesday on X. He then boasted, “Over the last year we have made 80 demonstration-related arrests and laid 124 charges. Arrests can happen at any time after an offence.”
Tens of thousands in Toronto and across Canada have turned out to protest week after week for more than a year as Israel, with the backing of American imperialism and Ottawa, has carried out its ethnic cleansing operation in Gaza launched in the aftermath of the October 7 uprising led by Hamas. Protesters’ demands that the trade union-backed Liberal Trudeau government press for a ceasefire and stop arming Israel have been rebuffed, with Trudeau and Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly instead smearing protesters opposing genocide as “antisemites.”
Pro-Palestinian protest encampments erected by students, faculty and supporters on campuses across Canada have been broken up by court injunctions and police raids. The deployment of far-right Zionist vigilante groups on campus to provide “security” has been openly encouraged by the federal government, with a new law passed enabling private security firms to access government funding. Groups in line to profit from this funding stream include Magen Herut, whose members must be Zionists and have experience in policing or military service, and Shomrim, an international vigilante group present in Hasidic communities. Magen Herut members have “patrolled” at anti-genocide protests, where they have surveilled and intimidated participants.
Immediately upon Israel’s launch of its genocidal onslaught on Gaza, Canada’s political establishment closed ranks to launch a vicious witchhunt against anyone who spoke out against the mass slaughter. The New Democrats, who were in a confidence-and-supply agreement with the Liberals at the time, threw Member of the Ontario Provincial Parliament Sarah Jama out of their parliamentary caucus because she issued a statement declaring her solidarity with the Palestinians and accusing Israel of apartheid, an accusation supported by the United Nations. Trudeau has repeatedly sought to intimidate protesters by repeating the lies of extreme Zionist forces, including in February when he accused demonstrators of being antisemites merely because they marched past Toronto’s Mount Sinai Hospital.
With the backing of the governments of Liberal Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Tory Ontario Premier Doug Ford, Demikw and the TPS have launched a far reaching campaign of harassment and arrests of pro-Palestinian protesters under the title “Project Resolute.” The Breach published an investigation in June which revealed the extensive character of the secretive political policing operation, which has included early morning raids, trumped-up charges and efforts to turn protesters into informants.
The police operations have gone hand in hand with the efforts of the political establishment to smear protesters as “antisemitic.” Eleven people were arrested last November in relation to a postering protest against the CEO of Indigo Books, who happens to be Jewish, over her campaign to support the Israel Defense Forces, with the police insinuating that their actions were “hate motivated.”
Demikw and TPS have been carrying out their crackdown in coordination with the RCMP’s Integrated National Security Enforcement Team and the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS), Canada’s premier spy agency.
Faisal Ibrahim, 38, was arrested and charged on October 19 with one count of mischief, interfering with property and a count of disguise with intent in relation to the March 7 protest. A research assistant and teaching assistant at the University of Toronto, Ibrahim had been targeted by Zionist social media pages for his pro-Palestinian activism before being charged by TPS.
Rachelle Friesen, 38, of the Student Christian Movement of Canada and Community Peacemaker Teams, was charged on October 1 with two counts of mischief that obstructs, interrupts or interferes with the lawful use, enjoyment or operation of property and one count of disguise with intent in relation to pro-Palestinian protests on November 13, 2023 and March 7, 2024.
After living in Israel for five years, including four as Peace Program Coordinator with the Mennonite Central Committee, Friesen was deported from the country in 2014 and banned for 10 years for her advocacy on behalf of the Palestinians.
Protesters interrupted the Scotiabank Giller Prize gala at the Four Seasons Hotel in Yorkville on November 13, 2023 to protest the bank’s complicity in the Gaza genocide. Evan Curle and Maysam Abu Khreibeh, both 25, and Fatima Hussain, 23, were charged at the time with obstructing, interrupting, or interfering with the lawful use, enjoyment or operation of property and using a forged document.
March 7, meanwhile, was a day of action by students and others protesting RBC and calling for the bank to divest from support for Israel, respect Indigenous sovereignty and end financing for the Trans Mountain Expansion and Coastal Gas Link pipelines.
The police claim that both Friesen and Ibrahim “wore medical masks to conceal their identity” during a March 7 protest in Midtown Toronto and that their participation prevented an employee from entering her workplace and forced her to leave the area in fear of her safety.
In another recent effort to suppress the protests, the Trudeau government in coordination with the Biden administration in the United States banned the Samidoun Palestinian Prisoner Solidarity Network as a “terrorist entity” and placed sanctions on activist Khaled Barakat.
Samidoun has organized protests in opposition to the Gaza genocide across Canada. Its international coordinator Charlotte Kates was arrested in April in Vancouver following a speech in which she led the crowd in a chant of “Long live October 7th” and advocated for the delisting of Hamas, Islamic Jihad, Hezbollah and other groups as terrorist organizations. The organization’s listing as a terrorist entity resulted in its bank accounts being frozen and make it difficult for members to travel internationally.
The unanimous endorsement of Israel’s genocide within the political establishment has introduced a climate of fear and censorship into Canadian cultural life. In the latest example of this, the Aurora Cultural Center north of Toronto closed down an exhibit titled Expressions of Critical Thought after one day this month due to complaints of “antisemitism” on social media because some of the works on display referenced Palestine. The Center told the artists in an October 4 email that the show was being censored due to “concerns raised by members of our community regarding the traumatic responses to some of the artworks.”
“I feel what they did contributes to the consistent dehumanization of Arabs in general,” Iraqi-Canadian artist Hala Alsalman told Hyperallergic. “I’m the only Arab who was showing, but obviously it’s not just me, it’s all of us.” Chantal Hassard, a co-curator of the show and grandchild of Holocaust survivors, noted that there was nothing antisemitic about the art on display and the claims were a “dangerous mischaracterization of the term.”

Kevin Walby, an associate professor of criminal justice at the University of Winnipeg and an expert on police tactics, said he’s “never seen” a large police raid and a hate crime investigation like this for postering or splashing paint on private property.
“This kind of raid is more typical for a high-risk warrant where you have one or two suspects who have guns or drugs,” Walby said. “Or it’s what you’d expect for an intervention against an organized hate group that was planning to imminently attack another group with weaponry.”
Walby said that an operation of this size would have cost hundreds of thousands of dollars if not millions. It would require the sign-off of many people, including superintendents and possibly even the chief of police.
“Police are not acting like blind Lady Justice, in an unbiased manner,” he said. “They are influenced by a climate in which Palestinian solidarity protests are being delegitimized by the media and by politicians.”

Re: the UofT anon, I think it's worth sharing the full email we got. This is the same university whose land acknowledgement talks about how grateful they are to have the "opportunity to live and work" on the stolen land their "private property" occupies. Also note that campus police have arrested members of OccupyUofT while they were holding a peaceful sit-in on campus.
"Dear students,
At this time of heightened tensions, when protests are taking place on many university campuses, I am writing to remind you of the University of Toronto’s commitment to free expression and lawful and peaceful protest, as well as the necessary limits that accompany those freedoms.
Freedom of expression is central to the University of Toronto’s mission of learning and discovery. The University’s Statement on Freedom of Speech notes that “all members of the University must have as a prerequisite freedom of speech and expression, which means the right to examine, question, investigate, speculate, and comment on any issue without reference to prescribed doctrine, as well as the right to criticize the University and society at large.” The statement also makes clear that all members of our community have the freedom “to engage in peaceful assemblies and demonstrations.”
The University respects our members’ rights to assemble and protest within the limits of U of T policies and the law. The University also has a duty of care to our students. Actions that create a health and safety risk, that interfere with the ability of students, faculty, librarians and staff to learn, teach, research and work on our campuses, or that disrupt or impede other University activities are not permitted.
U of T’s lands and buildings are private property, though the University allows wide public access to them for authorized activities. Unauthorized activities such as encampments or the occupation of University buildings are considered trespassing. Specifically, our Code of Student Conduct prohibits intentional damage to University property, unauthorized entry and use of University property contrary to instructions, disruptions of University activities, and other offenses to property and persons.
Any student involved in unauthorized activities or conduct that contravenes University policies or the law may be subject to consequences. We ask that you engage productively with one another to fulfill our mutual obligation to provide a welcoming and safe community in which all members can express themselves.
Best Regards,
Professor Sandy Welsh
Vice-Provost, Students"

I think, Meghan (allegedly) filed a case against the IRS to contest some charges/tax returns that she felt were unfair. Or because she thought she was charged extra and deserved a hugher refund than she got. And then she lost the case and had to pay the IRS for the filing a case against her. I don't know how true that is, just that she did file a case against the IRS. This was probably around 2010/11 so around the Trevor years. This is off the top of my head though, no factual receipts. Just something I remember reading on the old Tumblrs that are now defunct.
But about the financial fraud, I don't know if it counts but it is interesting to me that Meghan's lifestyle was mostly sustained on gifts and favours. She hardly paid for anything. At first, while she was auditioning, she lived with Trevor. They had a decent enihouse. But her dad says that he sometimes gave her money and it was mostly Trevor who sustained their day-to-day. It's believable and nothing wrong in that if that's the understanding that the couple has.
Then in Toronto, the suits producers got her a rental home. And later, a chauffeured car to get her to and from the set. This was a favour pulled by her friend rick hoffman.
There are some conflicting reports that say that she moved in with Cory mainly to save on rental. As in, it was his place and she moved in with him immediately after they started dating.
The Soho ambassadorship that she did, and later her small scale endorsements and Tig sponcerships got her a lot of goodies. All of her hotel stays, 1st class travels, food etc was almost always sponcon.
The only thing she allegedly spent her own money on was (probably) the air travel when she started dating Harry and they had their 2week arrangment. (Either one of them would travel to the other every 2 weeks). But she later moved in with himwhen suits ended.
So I'd say, Meghan does not understand finances, other than accumulating money in her own name in her own bank account. She has big dreams - foundations, charities, galas, UN missions, commonwealth, holiday homes, private jets etc etc... but has never paid for anything out of pocket so does not know how to sustain those dreams.
I was thinking of a different case of financial fraud - in 2020 or 2021, it was revealed that the SussexRoyal Foundation was being investigated over some allegations made about the way Harry and Meghan handled some transactions. I don’t remember the specific details and I can’t look it up at the moment, but there was a very haughty Sussex “we told you we didn’t do anything wrong” statement made when the investigation closed/cleared the allegations.
Whenever the Sussexes get in the news for their finances or Archewell paperwork, I always remember that incident, and specifically their response. It really rubbed me the wrong way and because they seemed to be gloating about having been cleared of wrongdoing, it makes me think that there actually really is something shady happening behind the scenes. I think they’re lucky it hasn’t been caught yet, chiefly because their MO is to distract us with semantics and petty “it’s the AG’s fault” blame game-type BS, but this week makes it clear they’re living on borrowed time.

Art by @baisleyarts
The life of young private investigator Jack Overland had been a challenging but overall mundane one. He worked in Toronto alongside his uncle, honing his skills under the older man's guidance for multiple years in relative peace.
Though, when a strange package arrives at his office containing a brightly colored stone: his life is thrust into chaos as an amnesiac supernatural being takes over his eyes leaving him blind. Little does Jack know that this was just the beginning of his and his new tentative ally's long journey that would bring them into the path of monsters and gods.
For the past year or so, I've been writing a Roleplay with my dear friend Renn inspired by the amazing podcast "Malevolent." The RP started out as a fun little idea that turned into 126,079 words and counting of raw replies between us both.
And we are now considering editing this RP into a full fledged fanfiction with characters from "Rise of the Guardians" but in a gritty 1930s setting with supernatural creatures and gods beyond human comprehension.
This post is a little test-run to see if there might be some interest in a story such as this.
This story includes but is not limited to:
Mystery
Horror elements
Violence and gore
Slow-burn Monster Romance (Passes Harkness Test)
Expansive worldbuilding
Original Characters
Character Injury and Death
If you see this post and you think this is something you might like to read, please like or reblog this post! We're only willing to put in the work to refine this RP into a proper fanfiction if there's people out there who might enjoy it.
