Presidio Trust: Hair Mat Trials in Grasslands Restoration

Matter of Trust is proud to be partnered with the Presidio Trust for the Hair Mulch Trials in this Grassland Restoration Project

The use of mulching materials for restoration can be important for increasing success of seeding and transplanting, but retaining soil moisture, protecting seeds, and providing additional nutrients. The opportunity to try a new mulch material- hair mats – is exciting for Presidio grassland restoration. A rigorous experiment is necessary for establishing the effectiveness of the new mulching material.

The main goal is test if the hair mat material increases the successful establishment of perennial grasses in the bare soil created by construction activities. Both seeding and transplanting of grasses will be tested. Because perennial grasses take at least two years to truly establish, the second-year monitoring is included in this proposal.

JUST IN: The Presidio Trust Board of Directors has unanimously voted to not select any of the three finalists for the mid-Crissy Field site. Over the weekend, still more voices weighed in to the public comment around the Presidio mid-Crissy Field proposals. Lauren Dachs, President of the S.D. Bechtel Jr. Foundation and Randi Fisher, Co-Founder of the Pisces Foundation urged the Presidio Trust Board of Directors to take the time they need to decide which of the three proposals is best for the long-term benefit of Crissy Field, the Presidio and the Bay Area.

The Presidio is part of one of America’s most beloved and innovative national parks - a park known for its glorious assets and communities of involved supporters. The Presidio Exchange, or PX, is the only proposal of the three for the former commissary site that would build on these successes.
