Once, [Yoko] called me late at night with instructions to drive with Rich [DePalma, the Lennons’ accountant] to their SoHo loft on Broome Street – where Yoko’s trusted tarot card reader, Charlie Swan (whose real name was John Green), lived rent-free. We were to pick up a mysterious object that she refused to identify, but she told me that it would be in a sitar case. Rich had a passkey, and like burglars, we traipsed around the enormous loft using flashlights. Neither Rich nor I had the slighted idea what a sitar case looked like, but when we came across an elongated wooden box, we decided that this must be it. Nervously, we opened the box. Inside was a plain brown bag. Inside the bag was a huge rubber dildo. Rich and I dutifully delivered the dildo to the Dakota, but, of course, we could not ask Yoko about it. The accountant told me he had grown used to carrying out unusual orders without asking questions. “Yoko’s the boss,” he said firmly. “I just do as I’m told.” Almost as an afterthought, he added, “Hey, man, I’m not sure I wanna know why I’m doing some of the stuff she’s got me doing!”
