When Victor left Mitch and Sydney, he could have written a book with the number of reasons he had. Each day since then, however, he’s added a reason to a new list, one about why he should have kept them close. It’s been far too long since he heard Mitch’s teasing but insanely helpful input or Sydney’s rambling. He can barely even remember what it felt like to pet Dol.
“No, I’m not cheating on you,” Victor says after Vex meows at the foot of the bed. “Just thinking about an old friend.”
Victor left to finish his mission, one that he had no interest in dragging Mitch or Sydney any further into than necessary. Now, he’s closer to finishing it than he thought was possible. But the closer he gets, the more everything weighs on him. He can’t stand the silence surrounding him; it’s deafening after spending so much time with Sydney. He feels lost without Mitch’s intel and concern for his safety. He’s getting more reckless, yet he scolds himself within because he knows they would hate his careless actions. Worse, every time he does something dangerous, he risks never getting back to them. That eternal loneliness is a worse thought than anything he could feel now.
Victor’s mission blinded him to what he was leaving and, months later, he can’t take the conditions he put himself into. His fingers itch to reach for his phone and dial a number he couldn’t forget, even though he tried. Before he can, his computer beeps as a tracker begins moving.
“I’ll be back, Vex. Keep being vexing while I’m gone.”
Victor rubs his hand over Vex’s head as he walks toward the door. His black trench coat disappears into the night, and he tries to leave his loneliness in the motel room. It’s easier said than done.
It’s nearing dawn when Victor stumbles back into the dilapidated motel room. Vex wakes and stretches slowly across Victor’s pillow before he stands to greet him. Victor pulls Vex into his arms. Vex is a great cat and a good companion, but he’s no replacement for the family Victor left behind. He hasn’t felt lonely since he was a kid wandering through his parents’ empty house, but now, he doesn’t even remember how to combat such feelings.
Vex butts his head up against Victor’s chin, then lowers his head to bite Victor’s wrist.
“Stop,” Victor mumbles, too lost in thought and used to Vex’s attention-seeking behaviours to care.
Vex bites him again and raises his head with force. Victor’s eyes widen as he picks Vex up out of his lap to look at him. Vex swipes a paw at him, and Victor tosses him softly toward the other side of the bed. Within a few seconds, Vex is swatting something around between his front paws. Victor grabs it without thinking, surprised to see his prepaid phone is Vex’s new toy of choice.
“What were you going to do with this?” Victor asks.
Vex meows loudly, so loudly that Victor is concerned someone passing may hear and report him for having a cat. It took him a while to find a no-questions-asked-cash-preferred motel in this area of the country, so he can’t risk getting kicked out, or worse, raising suspicion about who he is and what he’s doing.
“I can’t,” Victor replies, guessing that Vex can sense his loneliness, too. “They won’t want to answer.”
Vex begins meowing again until Victor raises the phone to his ear. Victor sighs as he realizes that Vex is too smart for his good and that it really would help. He lowers the phone and dials Mitch’s number. After a small hesitation, he presses the green call button and presses the flip phone to his ear. It’s not a weakness, Victor tells himself, but a reminder that Mitch is still there could be very beneficial.
“Hello?” Mitch answers.
Victor opens his mouth slightly but doesn’t speak. Hearing Mitch makes him feel entirely different than he expected he would.
“Anybody there?” Mitch questions.
Victor can’t answer. Vex shakes his head as he climbs toward Victor. Victor doesn’t notice the tears sliding down his cheeks until Vex rubs his face across Victor’s jaw. He hadn’t realized how much he needed this, how much he needed Mitch in his life, until this moment.
“Ha ha, very funny,” Mitch says. “I’m hanging up now… punk.”
“Mitch,” Victor calls quickly.
The line silences for a moment and Victor thinks he did hang up. He drops his head, but Mitch whispers, “Vic?”
“Yeah, it’s me. I-“
“Where are you?” Mitch demands. “Where did you go? Why didn’t you tell me you were leaving?”
Victor decides to interrupt all of the questions he doesn’t want to answer. “Mitch, I just- I wasn’t sure how much longer I could have taken this.”
“Vic? What are you talking about? Taken what? What is going on?” Mitch asks quickly. The concern in his voice is evident, and Victor closes his eyes in a poor attempt to keep himself from reacting to that.
“Everything. I left for a good reason, trust me, but I can’t finish this mission feeling so alone,” Victor explains.
“Give me the phone!” Sydney whispers harshly before scuffling sounds fill the line. “Vic?”
“Hey, Syd,” he replies softly.
“Tell me where you are. We’re coming to help you.”
“No. It’s too dangerous. I need to do this alone.”
“Then why call us?” Sydney questions. “You could’ve called anyone to stop feeling lonely. Admit it, Victor, you need us because we are the only people left who never let you think you’re alone. Because you’re not.”
Sydney huffs as she finishes, and Victor is glad she can’t see him smile. Vex watches his face, with drying tears on his cheek and a growing smile, and meows dramatically before flopping down to go back to sleep.
“Meet me in Chicago, Magnificent Mile, in a week, Syd.”
Vex meows again as Sydney rushes to relay the meeting spot to Mitch.
“I need you to do one more thing, though,” Victor adds.
“Anything,” Sydney responds.
“Don’t hate me if I’m lying. Just because I miss you and needed to know that you’re both okay doesn’t mean that I’m ready to put you in danger.”
Victor ends the call as soon as he finishes speaking. He lays back on the bed and doesn’t comment when Vex climbs onto his chest to take another nap. Hundreds of miles away, Sydney stares at the phone in shock.
“What happened?” Mitch asks.
“He admitted that he misses us,” Sydney answers.
“Whatever he’s dealing with can’t be good,” Mitch mumbles.
“But?” Sydney presses.
“He’ll be alright. Victor Vale has a way of coming out victorious.”

To SMC, I remember you posting last year about going to the EDC music fest and was wondering if you were going this year and if you had any tips since I'm going with some friends this year. We even rented an rv.
No we're not going this year. We went two years in a row and as fun as it is, it still takes about a week to recover.
First, make sure you always have water with you. Stay hydrated! They have water stations everywhere so stay stocked. Its being held on a race track so it gets very hot.
Make sure your shoes are comfortable as you will be walking A LOT!!
Also...buy a cheap prepaid phone. Don't bring your high end phone. Get a cheap phone and give the number out to the friends you are going with as well as a few people you want to check in with.
Renting an RV is a smart move. You will be comfortable. Keep the fridge stocked with water and drinks like gatorade. The food is expensive so definitely keep the fridge stocked with easy stuff to eat.
And have fun!!

My game-plan going forward...
So Jimin didn't make Hot 100 Top 10. We will have to wait until tomorrow to see where he lands on the charts.
I recommend we emotionally prepare for the possibility that he will break Taylor Swift's free fall record and chart lower than #38, especially if they culled more than 60% of his sales and YouTube and radio are at a near stand-still.
It is extremely obvious this was sabotage. And while that is BULLSHIT and you're entitled to your feelings, remember that Taylor Swift's career and music are doing just fine. These charts need super stars on them--not the other way around.
My game-plan going forward is to focus primarily on quality streaming on every platform and every device, including my smart TVs.
I had one remaining $25 pre-paid VISA gift card that I got from my local grocery store.
I created a brand new email address.
I got my best friend's permission to use her name, address, and cell phone.
I input all those details into the BTS US Store and pre-ordered Yoongi's digital title track and digital album, and I also bought all 5 of Jimin's Like Crazy digitals plus one version of Face digital album.
The best I can do going forward is finish up using a few prepaid gift cards to get Yoongi's 1 digital title track on my extra iTunes accounts.
Then I will be out of resources--both financial and mental. I will have to jockey all my premium free trial streaming accounts until they run out, then keep going with free versions.
But others who have energy and a network of non-ARMY who can help (I imagine at most they might need to tell you a cell phone confirmation text code), please reach out to funding accounts and work with everyone you can to buy for both this and next week.
If at all possible, it's important we try to ease Jimin down on the charts gently within 30 days of debut.
I recommend you don't just rely on a new email address. Make yourself a "new person" this week. Don't steal identities, obviously. But switch up your info and payment methods with folks you trust, enough to look brand new, because we have no idea what BB is tracking to count as a single sale, it's all guesswork right now.
We can work hard. We can work smart. We're ARMY.
And they should be scared.
Because the truth is--radio stations, golden statues, and ranks on a list are not a true gauge of good music.
Fans showing up consistently no matter what is the hallmark of good music.
I strongly urge you to leave encouraging and supportive messages using #To_Jimin on WeVerse today to let him know that no matter what the US Music Industry does, we love his work and are with him all the way.
This is so far from the last we will see of Park Jimin and BTS!
Love, Roo

ASK
In the modern day with smart phones, what kinda apps are your guys using the most? Games? Delivery apps? Stores? Some other weird novelty app?
Are they even the type to USE smartphones at all? Or are they just getting smth cheap from Walmart lol?
Honestly, I think Andromeda and Edgar would have a lot of delivery apps for the same reason- they don't. really leave the house. I mean Andro does, but only for events for the public and such. Andromeda also uses social media apps very frequently, albeit under supervision and purely to maintain their stardom.
Maddie is definitely the kind of person to have apps that were deleted from the app store years ago like Flappy Bird. they don't use a smartphone either, they just have an iPod. they have all sorts of dumb novelty apps on there too
Red hates technology like an old man so he still uses a landline. Green wouldn't use tech much either, but it's less of a statement and more of him just not using it.
Rae would be an AVID phone gamer. level 1 million on candy crush.
Allister probably uses tor and other such backdoor websites and apps to keep in touch with other shady characters. see also: prepaid phones

TOOLS FOR PERSONS WORKING ONLINE
Many persons with online jobs often have this desire to work outside. Working in nature can be reviving and a pleasant change from your work space. Sometimes the weather is nice and sunny and our backyard patio becomes that perfect place to work. However, working outside does have its fair share of challenges and this article will provide you with tips to make the process easier.
Wi-Fi Extender and Hotspot
A poor Internet connection will end your outdoor work session quickly. If you’re at home, a Wi-Fi extender may help you out if your router and modem are further away in the house. The extender will create a stronger signal and can even increase your speeds.
Should you choose to work outdoors at a coffee shop or public area, it’s smart to have a hotspot available. Actually, you may never know when the Internet might go down at your location, or you could even be surprised and find there’s no Wi-Fi connection available for use. Having access to a hotspot will ensure you’re able to be connected no matter what situation may arise.
Having a smartphone or a tablet, either of these can be tethered to your computer to provide an Internet connection. Please be aware, as these options will typically slice into your phone’s data plan plus reducing the battery life of your phone. It is important to remember that you also find mobile hotspots that are separate devices and often prepaid.
Anti-Glare Screen and Cooling Devices
Workers often find that the first problem they might have when working outside is a nasty glare on the computer screen. It often makes it difficult to see what you’re doing and cause you to squint. A shaded area is not enough to rectify this problem. Turning the screen brightness up as far as it will go will reduce the problem. It is important that you work from a cool shaded area. If shade isn’t plentiful where you’ll be working, consider wearing lighter clothing, bringing a portable mini fan, or using a cooling towel.
Extra Power Supply
A computer battery going dead is trouble. Should you head outside with a full battery, take along a power cord just in case. A portable charger is also an option, in case there are no outlets close by that can be used. Portable chargers must be charged beforehand and they can then be used to charge your computer when needed. Computer batteries don’t last all day, but depending on its condition, it may last up to two hours.
External Devices
Online jobs are challenging and persons working remotely often face issues during the scope of work. Some items are a must if you plan to work productively outdoors. Purchase a wireless keyboard and mouse, and consider a laptop stand to raise it up to eye level. These items can work wonder if you have to work outside. Please note that having a pair of headphones or earbuds will assist if you have to have to take a call or listen to music while engaging in your online work activities.
Working from a remote office can have its own set of challenges but working through the areas mentioned above will make the process easier. Carefully review these tips to take your work outside and stay industrious and driven no matter the challenges that may come up.

The whole ship list for Hatbox and Heartbeat!
Haha the Beating Heart Bride you mean, and as most fans call her Emily !
Who said “I love you” first
I would say Emily. When they were still alive and still "officially" courting (the GH having had set them up now hoping to finally marry her off) begrundgingly, but now for a while had been actually feeling things and grew to genuinely love each other's company. So much that she ended up rejecting the pretty boy she had been planning to elope with because she was starting to get feelings for the older uglier guy she initially was annoyed with until realizing he was fun, funny, actually kind and emotive deep down, sweet, respectful, smart and with a lot in common with her
She felt so safe with him one day they were having a stroll in the Mansion's garden their courting was actually turning into ACTUAL courting a natural way, she mentionned that event, a bit guilty. Him, not really saddened (she just told him she DID renounce after all) but rather genuinely curious asked her why. She pondered for a good while what to reply when she realized the obvious was to be told and she shyly confessed "Well, Mr Pace... because my heart belongs to someone else... you know?". That did hit him like a pleasant truck and warmed him all up inside, he who had never attracted anyone nor felt that for anyone, and the first time he was and feared it wouldn't be mutual because of the age gap, his looks and the context of potential arranged marriage being set up onto this young woman, it actually was. He just stared at her longly, because grinning at her a genuine way different from his usual way we know and telling her "Miss Gracey... that someone sure does have it indeed... but it's only fair because you have his" to which she grinned wider and looked away to hide her blush. Which was only the beginning of tgem being super cheesy to each other for the rest of their lives and afterlives
Who would have the other’s picture as their phone background
BOTH WOULD but they don't have any. Whenever they use cel phones they just use prepaid ones. Not their time, they do understand the atrait but don't feel the need now they're dead for one
Who leaves notes written in fog on the bathroom mirror
None because ghosts don't need to bathe unless they DO need and when they do nothing guarantees the other would follow
Who buys the other cheesy gifts
Both. Things that remind them of each other, nostalgic stuff, of events and inside jokes only them know, of super sappy romantic stuff, and of course of stuff that fit their special interests, either common or individual (as much as it can be annpying to her Emily understands Hatty hyperfixates on Scar and hatboxes therefore whenever she sees something related to those she gifts him for which he is very grateful for. He is happy, she is happy)
Who initiated the first kiss
Both. Right after the confession. Completely enamored, Hatty/Randall wanted to gaze in Emily's eyes and made her turn to him sincr she was looking away shyly. They gazed silently, his hand on her cheek, her hand on his hand. Then sooner than they'd think, they lips had locked together
Who kisses the other awake in the morning
Any of them who wakes up first and they need to wake up early in the evening (ghosts sleep at day since too much light is dazzling). That is if they sleep at all since ghosts don't need to sleep, but just to cuddle and feel safe in each other's arms they often do
Who starts tickle fights
None, he is too "proper" to indulge in that, and Emily as playful as she is sees tickling as childish
Who asks who if they can join the other in the shower
Again, ghosts don't need to wash. But if Emily for whatever reason is showering in a good mood, she miiiight call in. He actually ZOOMS as a small spectral orb whatever room he is in. In fact sometimes he doesn't need her to call him, and neither does she. They are kinky
Who surprises the other in the middle of the day at work with lunch
Since ghosts don't need to eat, there is no lunch time, and "work" just is haunting and existint in that Mansion. But sometimes when one is in another place of the property alone or with other ghosts the other can come with a surprise gift which may be one of the cheesy one I mentionned earlier, a cool one or even food. For Hatty it's rarer because ever since he died he kind of lost his appetite, but if Emily has New Orleans food like beignets or a good hot poboys ? That's the sign of ultimate love for him especially during a rough night. As for Emily, ever since her last day of life out of nowhere she did start to love to eat and it didn't calm down after death (cravingsfromthefactsheispregnantbutdoesntknow) and is a big sweet tooth, and her favorite desserts are cupcakes. Hatty sometimes brings her a box of delicious ones. The sign of ultimate love for her especially during a rough night. And if the Hitchhiking Ghosts who love cupcakes too try to steal them from her, she goes FERAL AND Hatty alternates between cheering and holding her back
Who was nervous and shy on the first date
In a way none and both. None because their courting was NOT consented by them but more or less forced as a setup by the Ghost Host and Constance who didn't want their niece to end up a spinster, so Hatty/Randall was kind of awkward about it whenever they would invite him pretexting business ("I JUST CAME TO SELL HATS WTF. OK JUST PLAY IT COOL AND YOU CAN LEAVE") and she the early times was a pest determined to send him away like Jasmine does with the princes in Aladdin. That is until she did feel guilty seeing he was trying to be courteous without wanting this either and apologized and he understood and they started to talk for real blablabla you know how it goes. Then when their feelings would blossom would the courting become shy and mutually giggly and awkward a good way. THEN when the confession happened from that day they were just being super cheesy lovestruck idiots who vould finally let their inner romantics they had held in out at last
Who kills/takes out the spiders
Emily. None of them fear spiders, but she is disgusted at the idea of them making web in her veil or hair. Whenever she sees one, *sbam*. Which Hatty finds to be exagerated "Love we are noncorporeal when we want to" "Better be safe than sorry". Plus he grew to enjoy critters during his banishment to the graveyard
Who loudly proclaims their love when they’re drunk
HATTY. He rarely is drunk since he rarely drinks at all anymore but the one time it happened he was loudly telling her how he loved her over and over as she was hushing him and nodding while trying to get him in the attic with the help of the other Beating Heart Brides and putting him to bed

Part 8- Cocaine Engineering
Weeks passed. Dani spent a little more of her cash on a motel room, first for a few nights, then deciding to hand over the weekly rate every Thursday until all the bills were gone.
It let her hang onto most of her new checks from Turtlebees, and she was starting to build up savings fast. Turns out when there's nothing for entertainment but unscrambling the prestige porn in your hotel room and getting a different ingredient on your hotdog at Deb's little stand, you could just... keep it.
As for the store- she was being careful. For the first couple weeks she had gone by Gina Lincoln, in honor of her old work bestie from the Wilson Titlee lottery stand. But, by the second week she had taken to wearing a blank nametag, and by the third...
"Gina, it's got to have a name on it."
"I'm just tired of being called "jyna," she said. "It sounds... pretty bad."
The meat manager let out a deep, hippoey laugh and slapped a hand down on the glass where Dani and her boss- fourth in charge- Redd, were discussing dress code.
"Can't you just correct them?" He gave her the flat, disapproving-but-concerned look of a jaywalker staring down cars as they cut across.
"I really don't want to be confrontational. Or... have them think I'm being that way."
Redd took off his glasses and rubbed his eyes with a thumb and forefinger. He was a robust guy, probably the type who'd have been called strapping in his youth, still holding that physique together with brown argyle suspenders and a swayback posture that always made him seem to loom.
He had been in this business for a long time. Plus, he was tidying up his third divorce next week, and Gina's keeping up with me in the gray hair department, so a date would probably work out.
So he gave a little, like he always did. You could get away with a lot in a business like this, as long as the numbers looked good at the end of the day. Cut a corner if it doesn't hurt those counts.
"Listen, Gina," he leaned forward and looked at her conspiratorially, over the smart silver frames of his glasses. "All I'm sayin' is that you have to have a name on there. Doesn't hafta be yours."
And so by week three, Dani was walking around Turtlebees with a bog-standard nametag, in her handwriting, in industrial, high-stink Sharpie.
Nametag
So far, she was getting along... great, come to think of it. She had taken up a position in the produce department, groceryside's precious little no-fontanelle-having fragile-ass porcelain baby.
The managers were obsessed with it- but only at a distance. There was a fear to it, like if they touched anything, so much as breathed the same air as a napa cabbage, everything would simultaneously wilt and be invoiced at sixty thousand dollars per fruiting body.
Six foot, seven foot, eight foot, BUNCH! God, Michael Keaton makes a great antagonist. And remember when Alec Baldwin was kinda cute? That's crazy.
She liked working the fruit tables. They were pleasantly cool, perfect for a good long lean. No bending at the knees, no restrictive plan-o-gram, you just put in as many fresh grapes as you can until they're gone, because baby, they're molding tomorrow.
Everything was dying all the time and it wasn't her problem. Buy it or you're wasting it. You sit the throne of Damocles and the blade is held by the single hair... of an onion.
She started subtly living the dream, while waiting for Craig to tell her she was being shipped off to Peru. She had a bug-out bag in her motel room, and was thoroughly regretting putting the old man in her phone.
He texted fast, and often.
He liked to hit send instead of comma for pauses.
She was buried under a pile of YouTube links to an alternating supply of Coltrane and Dolores Delirio. Once he found her tape collection, the onslaught of '90s Peruvian goth rock blew up her prepaid phone day and night.
But she could tolerate it all, suddenly. Produce was a full-time position, and with access to full-time hours, she finally cracked the code.
Three day weekends.
Allowed to pour all her head-down, don't-start-any-fires, grit-tooth determination into toting melons and heaving potatoes, she found she could get a lot of work done in a day. Productivity didn't really matter to her, but the fact that she could get the blood pumping and use that energy for something useful instead of murder... it had her feeling a tad more grounded, after a fundamentally paranormal week.
She made a point of helping Redd with some heavy lifts, and expressed a genuine interest in taking on more hours that same day, much to his delight.
She built a display perfectly to playbook while Redd was out sick, and made her move just a few days later.
"You know, Mr. Lake," she started, one knee up on the edge of the Leafy Greens wall, cleaning some accumulated cruft from the sprayer head with her thumb.
"Come on, Gina, we're like the same age. Actually, I might be younger." He frowned at his clipboard and pretended to be distracted.
"I... was thinking. I kinda want longer shifts."
"You huh?"
"Yeah. I don't have much going on. I think I could work twelves."
"Ah, I can't give you twelves. You'd go overbudget in a heartbeat."
"Well... how 'bout eleven?
"Best we usually do is tens, but you end up getting less hours on account of the hour lunch.
"An eleven with an hour lunch sounds fine to me. Would that work?"
For the second time, a man called Redd Lake, 40 year old grandson of a genuine Pony Express rider, cut a corner. The divorce papers were finalized, so now he had to shore up some social leverage if he was going to score that date. Get some good boy points in.
"That'd put you down to four days a week."
"Think the place'll hold together okay without me?"
He paused, then let out a short huff of a breath, turned to Dani and smiled. "It just barely might. You win, Gina."
And so, three-day weekends in Fish Camp began. She was feeling layers of fatigue, deep strata of strain and ache and worrying numbness evaporate from between her sore muscles and lift from her eroded bones. Hard days, but the reward of a three-day weekend... one day for laundry, one day for movies, and one day for bringing groceries to Craig, since he was looking after Seebs full-time now. It was about as good as a new life under an assumed identity could get.
The old boy is fine, she told herself, watching him roll sidelong off a couch cushion and onto a heap of unwashed dress socks. He just can't be cooped up in a hotel room all day. This way he gets a breeze.
Developments between Craig and his 'colleagues' were coming back slowly, and required an extra layer of translation- it was all encoded in something called Beaver Math to begin with, and then broken down into Straight Up Lies About Physics by Craig himself. And then further, one more time, into Brooklyn Standard so that Dani could at least start to find meaning in it.
Craig spent a great deal of time plunking at a typewriter- from the shortly after her lunchtime arrival to the deep, stringy black-gold of a sunset that took its time, oozing down behind the ponderosas. The endless, purposeful clacking made Dani feel old in a way that Alice Cooper Goes to Hell on tape didn't.
Sometime between sunset and the evening news, he stopped and sighed and wiped his forehead. There was a manic twitch to his mustache, and a genuine excitement in his work- and when it faded, Dani heard the absence from down in the den.
Vincent Price- Vinny, she decided one day; you look enough like Joe Pesci anyway- turned his head with her when the clicks began to slow. She scritched at his shell with a cheap toothbrush for a few seconds longer, and then gave in to the treacherous urge to socialize.
She wasn't exactly a wallflower- she always found a way to make friends, and hated an awkward working relationship as much as anybody- but she wasn't the best at relating to people. She had her most effective lessons in empathy and dialogue from Little Shop of Horrors and The Man With One Red Shoe. But she decided to try something, in the lull.
Craig was still at his post, giving off the occasional -snif- and vaguely tapping at this key or that. She eased into the kitchen and poured herself a glass of water.
"Punch the keys, for god's sake," she muttered, and then she heard a -snif- turn into a -snort-.
He played the part, leaning into whatever insanity needed to be in hardcopy, with a sly grin on his face.
"Yes, yes...!" Dani added, after a sip. And then it happened.
Two Finding Forrester fans, finding each other.
"You're the man now, dog!" they shouted, perfectly in sync. Laughter, cans of Inca Cola, and two workaholics taking a real break followed.
For the next two hours and thirteen minutes, it was just a couch and a touching story about J.D. Salinger viciously sabotaging a talented young man's career in sports. They laughed, they cried, they provided some of the worst film commentary on in the history of the medium. Imagined insights, outright lies, and unprecedented bullshitting bubbled to the surface until they both could stand the thought of work once more.
"Alright, so Beaver Math," Dani said, leaning back in the collapsible table's booth seat. "You told me it's innate- now look, I don't really live at the intersection of physicality and philosophy like you and the rest of the VFW- but that's bothering me. Math isn't math until you... math it."
"Dani, you're starting to sound more like me. I don't know if I mean that as a compliment, but it's progress. 'Isn't math until you math it,'" he repeated quietly, shaking his head.
"Listen, I was majoring in radio, not astronomy. What I'm driving at is that I'm used to treating math as... you know, observed. You have two apples- but 'two' by itself is conceptual."
"-snif- I don't follow."
Dani lit a cigarette and allowed herself a deep drag before continuing.
"Like, it's language. It's just a tool for designating a quantity. If you or I weren't around to use 'two', so we could understand where we stand in reference to shit, the number of something wouldn't mean anything. You'd have yourself an unknowable number of apples, but since you aren't observing them anyway, it doesn't matter whether or not you know it."
"Sheesh- you're Jolene's kid, alright. But where you and her differ most is that she wouldn't say the craziest shit I ever heard. You wanna try again?"
She laughed and nodded. "Listen, all I'm saying is that this Beaver Math stuff sounds like straight-up fraud. You can solve an equation on paper, but if you go outside and look for an equation with your eyes, you won't find it in nature."
"John the Baptist would disagree with you, but I digress. Let's take it from the top. You're about halfway there- numbers do serve as a label for a phenomenon, which is unaffected by whether or not it is labeled. You've got that down. --You remember I showed you the egg trick, with the bread?"
"I still don't like just jamming my fingers into the egg like that. Why?"
"Think of the yolk as matter, okay? All matter. You want to scramble it, poach it, bake it, fry it. You're saving the whites for meringue, so you pad your fingertips on some dry bread to wick off any moisture, and that preparation allows you to get the yolk out- no fuss, no muss.
"This is that middle step with the bread. That missing middle step. Beaver Math, Dani.
Beavers don't have a spoken language to convey specifics. But they know the measure of a dam before it's built. If there's two beavers building the same dam, they -snif- both know the measure. Perfectly.
Not only their awareness, but their interaction with that measure, speaks to a manipulable underpinning- if you can create a barrier between you and the dimensional shear of sliding over, you can reach in and do whatever you want with the numbers."
Dani was going to get it. She wasn't stupid, but she was starting to doubt her ability to tell hot air from stone cold fact. Craig was asking her to take a lot for granted.
Let's move past it. He's been at this all day.
"Alright, alright. Have you figured out anything new?"
Craig eased over to the refrigerator and got himself a snickers bar from the freezer. He took a slow, hard bite through the layers while he pulled his thoughts together.
"Lots of crosstalk about the big sixty-zeen pop you did the other day. Not a lot productive, just a lot of raised eyebrows. I turned off Skype about halfway through. That's when I -snif- got out the old work suitcase."
"But?"
"Right, well- as you know, they do some beaver math where they are, ship it over Skype, and -snif- then I transcribe it into hardcopy. You get how that's a ritual, right? Transubstantiation? You've got something material now, that's your little communion wafer. You set your brain right and let the eucharist in, approach it like you mean it, and it goes from being symbolic to being material. It's real all of a sudden."
"I didn't take you for a religious guy, Craig."
"Four brothers and five sisters. At that point it was just cheaper to send us to Catholic school. But -snif- I don't think any amount of time spent at Our Lady of Vailankanni Prep could've made me a good catholic."
They laughed at that, and took a few minutes to watch GWAR raise some hell on the Springer set. God bless syndication. Savior of the post-primetime lifestyle.
"Simpler times, man. You were talking about Easter?"
"Good enough. These documents I've been running off- it's a little like remote viewing. You've heard of Stargate, right?"
"Christopher Judge was on that show. Did you know he was Miles in House Party 2?"
"No, Dani. Nobody knows that. Anyway, I meant the CIA stunt in the 70s to weaponize clairvoyance. That's -snif- my bunk blueprints at work. They attracted some real talent, but never put the right tools in their hands."
He paused and picked up a page. The margins were reduced to half an inch, and the spacing tight enough to challenge legibility.
"After IBM but before Peru, me and some colleagues did some experimental cipher work. Very experimental. We were sending signals into space, bouncing them off objects and -snif- getting a readout in the back yard. Back when I was real into the perico I could let this stuff into my mind as easy as falling asleep."
"Perico?"
"You remember Watergate? Y'know that guy with the codename- Deep Throat?"
"Oh, sure."
"Well, I had a codename too. Deviated Septum."
Oh.
He laughed in the hard, seagull way that cranky old men like to laugh, and then slid the cluttered page across the table.
"Don't read. You'd get further eating it. I want you to look at this like it's a magic eye poster, and wait to see something. There's a guy in St. Louis with an identical sheet of paper, and he's gonna close the circuit and send his confirmation when he sees the same thing you do."
I could just cut out this part entirely and do just fine with Turtlebees. The hours are good and so are the weekends. Maybe me and Seebs can just dip and not deal with any of this.
...At least until I belt out another complimentary cremation.
She took a deep breath and eventually realized that neither her circumstances or Craig were going anywhere. In time she moved from a state of getting this over with to staring into the overlapping symbols and letting them lurch off the page toward her.
As her eyes unfocused, they peeled away from the page- fogging the edges of her vision until they became a suffocating, ink-black tunnel.
She closed her eyes a moment, and then she felt concrete underfoot. The world was lit with the glow of a hazy gray-pink sunrise.
Turtlebees.
Make it happen here.
"I was worried about this. One day I'll wake up in hell and just... not know the difference." But she did know, right away actually, and found herself zigzagging down empty aisles. There never was a roof- the sunrise followed her, yawning bands of orange creeping through the deep, soggy fluff.
She found herself in front of the freezer case, staring through a streak she'd made in the frosty glass.
Staring at a gallon of ice cream. There was something wrong with it.
She squinted at the lid. She could have opened the door, but no- if this is hell, it'll just shut behind me and I'll get to sample hypothermia for a thousand years or something. --Might meet Kurt Russell, though.
As yet another of her favorite films intruded on her attempt at linear thought, she saw something wrong again. Dust, in a cloud around the ice cream. Black dust- and moving, like gnats.
She could hear something, too. Overhead, on the radio. Bruce Hornsby? Always thought it was a little uncool to have a lyric about welfare lines in a song you play every other hour at the grocery store.
The dust came into focus, only for a second. Every grain was a character. For a moment so fleeting that she suddenly, painfully yearned for it, she had been exposed to the material truth of the real. Each and every particle was a minuscule, living symbol, moving as its meaning changed, each and every one of the swarm vying to make the ice cream real as if without their intervention it might cease to be. Why this particular unit was such a struggle, Dani couldn't imagine.
"Raspberries just turned up, Dani. Can you run them up to the front gondola?"
She turned and saw Redd Lake, automatically nodded, and wandered away from her moment of linkage with the universe to go freshen up the department.
Wait. Dani?
And then the numbers fell away entirely. Redd was Craig, and Turtlebees was the houseboat, and there was no existentially fuzzy ice cream to ponder, just a plate of strongly-seasoned lomo saltado serving the express purpose of making this world more attractive than the other. She ate without thinking, and Craig watched with his fist clenched tight around a fire extinguisher, hidden beneath the table.
"Milton, my guy in St. Louis, is ready to do the confirmation. I got him on the line right now. Don't think about it, Dani, but tell me what you saw."
"Man, I was at work again. Cold case. The ice cream was weird. It was like- your regular ol' tub of spumoni, but the edges were like the Take On Me video. I got a good look, and the edges were..."
"Calculus," a small voice replied. Craig's old computer heaved with the difficulty of video-conferencing on Windows 98 with an illegal satellite connection. "But what woke you up?"
"My boss was there, but... he called me Dani. Nobody at work knows that's my name. Either he knows something- and I panic, and stop dreaming, or this is bullshit, and I stop dreaming because I outsmarted it."
"You got a sharp cookie there, Craig," the crunchily pixelated little man carried on. "Saw the signs. But the lease ran out on the lab, so we don't have a testing environment to confirm anything."
Dani laughed sheepishly and reached for another drink. "Craig," she said after a few blessed drafts, "You mentioned, uh, something becoming real in this process. Did that happen? It sure didn't feel real."
"Something did. You also put my sinkable home at risk. --But I can put that behind me for a minute. The information you just lived within- 'cause that's what you did- was some classic C.E."
"C.E.?"
"I'll tell ya later. Anyway, something real. Here it is." He turned his wrist like a magician pulling an old-fashioned 'is this your card?' and revealed, plain as day, Dani's nametag. Her handwriting, her little joke- but she had left that in her car, on shore!
"Don't touch this or you'll throw up. It's a handle."
"Hmdle?" Dani was deep in the lomo saltado. Craig might have... more than two problems, but if he just made Peruvian food and stopped talking about beaver indices and zeenie-weenies for a minute, she could forgive the rest.
"I'm no therapist, and you may not have time for one. The Mayor Sean story was on The Weather Channel earlier."
"What? Why weather?"
"They've got people calling what happened to him ball lightning. --Let me tell you about ball lightning, though. There isn't any. It's ghosts. It's a euphemism. If the news says ball lightning, they're pitching an ooh-ahh distraction because something real is happening."
Dani didn't say anything. Craig crouched and began digging through the fridge, sorting through tupperware for the rest of the stir fry he intended to heat up.
"--Anyway. Think of this as a kind of talisman, linking you and your, uh, singularity, with beaver math serving as the chain. Now, I don't know that you should use it- at all, but it's access. Don't know about an off switch, but it's an on switch, for sure."
"So I just touch this, and- foom. Flame on."
"I have good reason to suspect that there may be side effects. Nausea, for one. Skin cancer, possibly. And- can't be certain, but you may relive some painful stuff in the process."
"Sounds like a lot of trouble for something I can already do just fine."
Craig sagged in his seat and rubbed his forehead. He curled his fingers around the conjured nametag and gave Dani a weary nod.
"Cocaine Engineering is fast, Dani. You jump to the end and then, if you're all in one piece, you get to work backwards and see how you got there."
It dawned on her, and she ran a hand back through her hair in disbelief. Something like that could let her attend counseling without committing arson, for one. Put up with traffic. Enjoy the internet.
She might never murder a politician again.
Wow!

I also like to remind people that phones are now a requirement to participate in society. You need an email and a cell number on your CV and to be reachable at any time to qualify for most, if not all minimum wage positions. Nevermind higher paying jobs. And you not only need a phone that can access emails, you need an internet plan. If you want to get out of poverty and homelessness you already need a phone and reliable transport, and you can only get housing financing if you have a full time job. If you rent you need to work like 60 hours minimum wage a week and then a second job as well, but you can buy a phone and a prepaid internet plan from one day's donations in some cases, with which it can be a slight bit easier to get a job. It's no longer a luxury, it's a necessity.
In the past you could submit a CV typed up and printed out for free at the local library in person and get a job. Now they're defunding libraries and declaring them insolvent and closing them up, and using an internet Cafe is more expensive than a phone and prepaid plan. You are also required to email or electronically submit CV's for literally any job, in-person hand-ins aren't accepted anymore.
People also often get tvs as gifts or second hand at major discount, and they get it for news and educational programs for young kids when they can't get into preschool. They buy and fix broken old appliances, some who are very good at it will get a broken like smeg appliance that like needs a fuse replaced or a bolt tightened and fix it up for less than the cost of the cheapest new ones. I've seen this happen a lot where I live specifically.
We have people that immigrate that want to get rid of stuff that sell furniture or appliances for insanely cheap or even give it away for free just to get rid of it because it's cheaper to buy new furniture and appliances wherever they're going than to ship their shit over. They advertise the collection on Facebook and if the person can pick it up themselves or contribute to gas for delivery they can get a 14k couch for 3k. (like 150ish euro pound or dollars).
Poor people don't buy things new almost ever. A lot of poor people salvage junk or get things for free or at highly discounted prices or as gifts. You'll also frequently see that some poor people will sell appliances to pawn shops to make rent that month.
I'm scrabbling a bit to get enough of a deposit to get an apartment that's not an outright health risk so I can move out from my parents house and go no contact because they're like, fully okay with my brother dating a nazi and also homophobic and abusive so I need to get out. It's cheaper for me to rent a storage unit, stick all my furniture and appliances in there for a year, and pay the shelter fee for a bed, shower and plate of dinner a month than renting the cheapest place available. I mean just over half of the lowest rent in my area covers storage rent and shelter fees.
If I need to get out quick and I go this route, I can save so much on rent and utilities that I can keep my phone plan and car. I'll still be dirt fucking poor, unless I can find a place that's 2k in rent and utilities combined which is literally impossible right now. I'll have to lose my medical aid and stop my meds (which can very easily kill me), but I could survive a bit.
Having "luxury" items that are actually just basic necessities does not make you a liar about being poor or bad with managing your money. It makes you smart, actually, and we need to start minding our business about poor people if it's not to give them money.

welp dark timeline has won. ACP is already gone for the majority, and we now enter into the partial funding phase
for those that haven't been cut off yet, depending on how and who you received the ACP benefit through, you may still have internet until the end of may if you're lucky.
i can personally vouch that verizon at least has guaranteed its ACP recipients that currently use any of their prepaid wireless services will continue to be funded till may 31st.
this includes:
Straight Talk
Total by Verizon
Simple Mobile
Safelink
Walmart Family Mobile
Tracfone
Go Smart
Page Plus
Net 10
not sure if any other providers are doing the same, so i recommended checking out what your isp has to say about it. ive heard that some providers may even start giving out their own discounts in the future in order to keep ACP customers from canceling their contracts.
i encourage everyone that was enrolled in ACP to check out the link below to see if there are any local internet assistance programs in your state or city that you may qualify for
if you currently recieve EBT or medicaid then you should qualify for a free lifeline phone, which provides both free monthly cell service and a few GB of data each month. many lifeline providers allow you to use your own phone with their service if its compatible, but they will send you a free cheap smartphone if you need one. keep in mind that only one lifeline phone is allowed per household, even if your household members are just roommates.
you can apply for lifeline using the link below
i know better than anyone how depressing this whole situation is, but hopefully this won't be a forever thing. this program has helped too many people to just disappear for good like this
good news is there seems to still be some congress members pushing for a funding renewal. maybe if we kick up enough of a shit about it, we can force congress to expedite getting this program restored. might even help if we start rallying about it idk
23 million americans are about to loose affordable internet access, surely there has to be something more we can do about it
for me personally, i use a verizon based lifeline service so i still have one more month of unlimited internet before i get demoted from to like 4.5GB a month. thats just enough for necessary and emergency use, but i wont be able to do much else with it. i live right by a library tho and have family that are close enough to visit often, so i'll get by somehow
but most ACP recipients aren't as lucky as i am. my sister has already lost her internet, and many others have as well. not everyone lives close to public wifi sources, and unfortunately not everyone that qualified for ACP will also qualify for lifeline. for many people this was their only way to afford internet, and its loss will be felt deeply for a very long time.
my condolences to those that have already lost their internet, wishing you all the best in the difficult times ahead of us. be joining you guys soon o7
RIP ACP
government is trying to ban tiktok meanwhile millions of poor and disabled americans are about to completely lose their internet access at the end of april because congress wont renew funding for the affordable connectivity program
hell fucking world

Is Boost Mobile the Best Choice for Your Budget?
Boost Mobile is popular for its affordable prepaid plans. Many users love the simplicity it offers. No contracts, just pay as you go. For budget-conscious people, this is appealing. Let’s explore if Boost Mobile is the best value for your money.
Many users share positive experiences. For example, Sarah, a student, switched to Boost Mobile to save on monthly bills. She was paying too much with her previous provider. With Boost, she found a plan that suited her needs. No surprises in the bill, just a flat fee every month. This made her life easier and saved her money.
Boost Mobile offers various plans to choose from. You can select one that fits your data and calling needs. Some people need more data, while others use Wi-Fi most of the time. Boost Mobile understands this. They have flexible options to suit different lifestyles. If you only need basic features, you won't pay for extras. This makes it a smart choice for many.
Coverage and Network Performance
Network coverage is important when choosing a mobile provider. Boost Mobile uses T-Mobile’s network, which has wide coverage. Many users report good service in most areas. John, a frequent traveler, shared his experience. He needed reliable coverage for work. With Boost Mobile, he could stay connected in different cities. This gave him peace of mind and kept him productive.
However, coverage can vary by location. It’s always a good idea to check the network map. See if Boost Mobile covers your area well. Some rural places may have weaker signals. But in urban areas, the service is generally strong. For most users, the coverage is adequate for daily needs.
Another factor to consider is network speed. Boost Mobile offers 5G in many areas. This is great for streaming, gaming, and video calls. Users appreciate the fast speeds, especially when they need to work on the go. Even on a budget, you can enjoy modern network features with Boost Mobile.
Customer Service and Flexibility
Good customer service is crucial for any service provider. Boost Mobile has mixed reviews in this area. Some users praise the helpful staff. Others have faced issues with long wait times. It’s important to consider how often you may need support. For many, the online help section solves most issues quickly. If you prefer talking to a person, be prepared for possible delays.
One of the best parts about Boost Mobile is its flexibility. There are no contracts tying you down. This means you can switch plans or leave anytime without fees. For example, Lisa needed more data for a month. She easily upgraded her plan, and next month, she went back to a lower plan. This flexibility saves money and adapts to changing needs.
Finally, Boost Mobile offers discounts and promotions. New customers often get deals on phones and plans. It’s a good idea to check their website for the latest offers. If you’re looking for an affordable mobile provider with flexible options, Boost Mobile is worth considering. For many, it’s the best value for money.

Weeell, ok. I’m glad people are talking about it, but here’s what’s missing: people of color are much less likely to have smart phones than white people; much less likely to have bank accounts; or credit cards; and POC have to turn to extremely expensive means to get plastic, such as prepaid debit cards with fees, they use pay day loan companies with high interest fee based services, and they are effectively shut out of cash free establishments. The racial injustice of this move towards a cash free economy is a pretty big freakin deal and should be right at the top of anyone’s concerns, well above the hypothetical need to take part in an underground economy. If and when we start protecting the freedoms of African Americans and other POC we protect everyone’s freedom.
having cash is like having secret money. like whos gonna find out i’m buying tacos with this crisp $20 bill??? not my bank account, that’s for sure
