BY THE WAY, i did a quick research (quick tw//mentions of death threats and some political stuff)
do korean people really use funeral wreaths to make a statement? most of you must’ve seen the tweets where they argue “but we do the same for politicians, sports, and everything else!” well the answer, unsurprisingly, is no— they do not!
political protests mainly consist of the person themselves, a placard, and sometimes a (battery-operated) candlelight or a flag/banner. they hold these protests at a high regard, so resorting to something as low as a “death threat” could easily render their points invalid. koreans have a longstanding history with political protests, having successfully staged student uprisings, worker unions, and coups against political figures. the latest protests they’ve made date as recent as september 2024, with the korean people protesting for an effective response against climate change.
so yes, koreans value their protests a lot but they are smart about it. some protests even last a year or so, one recent and infamous case was against their former, president park geunhye. there are a series of protests dubbed the candlelight rallies for their use of candlelight for a peaceful protest. these protests stemmed from an incident back in 2002, the yangju highway incident, and the candlelight vigils were meant to mourn the victims while also protesting their unjust deaths. they continued to use this type of protests for more unjust deaths as well as to make a political statement.
now, sports are a huge deal in korea just like americans are with their soccer. the biggest and most important protest that had anything to do with sports was the 1988 june democratic struggle. the protests and uprisings were mainly to overthrow the dictatorship they were under, resulting in a revision of the constitution, stating that the single term presidency only lasts for five years, preventing another event of a dictatorship. (i kinda skipped over a lot of the details, especially the one related with sports, but if you’re interested, it’s a good read and it does remind me of the people power revolution in the philippines.)
you might be asking now— what do funeral wreaths have to do with korean history and protests? there really isn’t… like i mentioned, korean people mainly use placards and a candlelight to portray their messages. why? because sending death threats would render their points invalid because it's a poor attempt at intimidation and a wish for someone's early demise, which would not help their case if the people want to be heard.
funeral wreaths cost a lot of time and money to make and it’s impractical to use as a protest material because you would think that there’d be a lot of people joining, there’s no space for the wreaths to be seen, and, honestly, a large group of people is enough to garner the attention of anyone so the use of wreaths isn’t necessarily important.
from what i’ve gathered, wreath protests are popular amongst the korean industry, even dating back to a year ago where pentagon fans sent cube wreaths, demanding the company for a comeback. although, no, it’s not a funeral wreath. it’s the usual flower wreath that you would see when someone is being congratulated.
some fandoms that have sent funeral wreaths are tokkis and flovers for hybe. they mainly address these towards the company rather than an individual, since they argue that it is meant to be a protest with the intention of a better treatment for their artist. (personal disclaimer: i do not agree nor condone the act of sending funeral flowers even if it's directed towards a company. there will always be a better way to protest and have your demands met.)
the only instance i know of where “fans” sent funeral wreaths with malicious intent towards an individual are for suga, following his dui incident, and seunghan, for returning to his own group. considering the context in which these funeral wreaths are being used— no, there is no other way to view it as anything else but a death threat or wishing death upon the receiver.
one can argue that funeral wreaths don't necessarily mean wishing death upon someone alive. however, they made it abundantly clear with the messages they put on the banners alongside with the tweets wanting him to just "disappear" and leave the group, or to stop leeching/freeloading off of the other six members' achievements. so no, they don't have any other way to spin this. it's malicious intent. they also doubled down by dancing in front of the wreaths so like,,
"but you can't possibly know better than korean people themselves!" that's also true and i'm not claiming to do so. this was mainly written to bring some value into actual protests that were held by korean people, ones that brought change to their country while also debunking the claims that korean people have been doing wreath protests for years now.
i think it's disgraceful to have them be generalized as unreasonable and hateful protesters, or people with a backwards mentality, all because a select few can't accept a young man who dated before he debuted. whether sm entertainment likes it or not, all eyes are on them and people are not happy with what's going on.
with koreans being so deeply rooted with their culture, they should know better what funeral wreaths symbolize. also, here’s a fun read about how impractical and wasteful the overuse of flower wreaths are, you can take what you want from it.
#ddolposts#if anyone tries to argue the same#you can bring up some of the points i made#it's really not that hard to fact check their claims too#i know their guilt is working overtime#anywayss#riize is 7

Excerpt from this New York Times story:
For much of the last five years, automakers have been spending billions of dollars in a frantic race to develop electric vehicles and build factories to produce them, with expectations that consumers would flock to these new models.
But in the past 12 months, the growth rate of electric vehicle sales has slowed sharply as some car buyers have balked at the high prices of electric cars and trucks and the hassles of charging them, especially on long trips.
The shift in consumer sentiment is now forcing many automakers to pull back on aggressive investment plans, and pivot, at least partly, back to the internal-combustion engine vehicles that still account for most new car sales and a large share of corporate profits.
The latest example came on Thursday when Ford Motor said it would retool a plant in Canada to produce large pickup trucks rather than the electric sport-utility vehicles it had previously planned to make there.
Ford’s move comes a day after General Motors said it expected to make 200,000 to 250,000 battery-powered cars and trucks this year, about 50,000 fewer than it had previously forecast.
After the pandemic, there was a huge exuberance around E.V.s, and I think a lot of the manufacturers thought that growth was going to continue,” said Arun Kumar, a partner and managing director in the automotive and industrial practice at AlixPartners, a consulting firm. “But the reality is that’s not the case, and it’s a smart move to make sure you’re not losing market share in internal combustion.”

From Classic to Electric: The Transformation of Iconic Car Models
Electric Revolution in the Automotive Industry
The automotive industry is undergoing a monumental shift, transitioning from the roar of gasoline engines to the hum of electric motors. This transformation is not just about the emergence of new electric vehicle (EV) brands, but also about the electrification of some of the world's most iconic car models. This transition to electric power is driven by a combination of environmental concerns, advancements in battery technology, and changing consumer preferences. The journey from classic internal combustion engines to electric powertrains has been both challenging and exciting, reshaping the automotive landscape as we know it.
The Resurgence of the Volkswagen Beetle
One of the most beloved car models in history, the Volkswagen Beetle, has made a comeback in an electric avatar. Originally launched in the 1930s, the Beetle became a symbol of simplicity and reliability. In recent years, Volkswagen announced plans to revive the Beetle as an electric car, part of its broader strategy to introduce more electric models. This new electric Beetle aims to combine nostalgia with modern EV technology, appealing to both classic Beetle lovers and new-age environmentalists. While retaining its iconic shape, the electric Beetle is expected to feature advanced technology like fast charging and a substantial range, catering to the needs of today's EV market.
The Electric Transition of the Ford Mustang
The Ford Mustang, an emblem of American muscle cars, has also embraced electrification. The Mustang Mach-E, an all-electric crossover, marks a significant departure from the classic Mustang's V8 engine tradition. Launched in 2020, the Mach-E combines the Mustang's legendary performance with the benefits of electric propulsion. It offers a range of up to 300 miles on a single charge and accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.5 seconds. H.R.H. The Crown Princess's speech at a dinner hosted by Business Sweden and the Swedish Embassy
Your Excellencies Lords and Ladies Ministers Members of Parliament Ladies and Gentlemen
The Spinning Jenny, ball bearings, the steam engine, the spanner, the pacemaker, Tetra Pak, the tin can, Spotify and the World-Wide-Web.
The UK and Sweden are countries with fine traditions in entrepreneurship and innovation. We have created things that have developed the world! People all around the Globe are using our services and products.
I am grateful to Business Sweden for arranging this dinner. This room is filled with companies and other stakeholders that stand for creativity and great ideas!
The ties between our countries are strong and have been so for a long time. And that also applies to me personally!
Today I think of my great-grandmother Crown Princess Margareta. She was born Margaret of Connaught at Bagshot Park in 1882 and married the Swedish King to be, Gustaf Adolf. Even though her life was all too short, she had a great impact on our country with her openness and liberal values.
She was a pioneer in many ways, not least in popular Swedish winter-sports like bandy, where she, in her long skirt, was captain of the team. Off the ice, she fought for women’s rights, and she made great efforts to bring our countries closer together.
We are, with this dinner, taking new steps in strengthening the cooperation between the UK and Sweden.
Tomorrow marks the start of the UN Climate Summit, COP28. The world will once again come together to address the biggest threat of our time: the climate change.
Deep, rapid, and sustained reductions in greenhouse gas emissions are needed. The challenges and problems are obvious.
But there is also hope – and changes for the better are happening all around us. And you, who are in this room, represent that!
Our governments cooperate closely. There is also tremendous power when the business community act together. Both the UK and Sweden are world leading on innovation, and our global competitiveness is closely linked to our strive towards green transition.
To provide just a few examples:
The new industries of green batteries and green steel are paving the way for major vehicle manufacturers to be at the forefront of the transition to fossil-free vehicles. Another example are banks, in both our countries, providing financing to large companies embarking on their climate transition journey.
The beliefs that have driven us forward in history will also help save our tomorrow! And we know that the next crucial technological leap lies in sustainable development.
With these words, I wish you all a lovely dinner.
Let us strengthen the cooperation for a sustainable future.
Let us create even stronger ties between the UK and Sweden!
Thank you!
Speech held by H.R.H. Crown Princess Victoria in London, United Kingdom on Nov. 29, 2023.

Industry trend|The University of California has introduced a new type of passive RFID sensor, which was showcased in Hangzhou
In the data-driven future, sensors are seen as a bridge between the physical world and the digital world. However, most traditional sensors rely on batteries for power, which limits their widespread application and real-time sensing capabilities to a certain extent. On November 5, a research team from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of California, San Diego presented their research at the 22nd ACM Conference on Embedded Network Sensor Systems (SenSys 2024) held in Hangzhou, China: Using RFID tags to achieve battery-free sensing, this breakthrough research not only broadens the application range of sensors, but also opens up new paths for the future of data collection.
The core members of the research team include Dinesh Bharadia, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering, and Nagarjun Bhat, a doctoral student in electrical engineering. They found that RFID tags, which are usually used to track inventory or payment card information, actually have great potential and can be repurposed for battery-free sensing and tracking.
The working principle of RFID tags is relatively simple: they receive data from the chip and transmit it to the RFID reader, which processes the information and sends it to a computer program for interpretation. These tags are often embedded in products such as clothing and books, and as the technology becomes more common, up to 90% of retailers are using RFID technology, making the chips widely distributed and easy to obtain.
Bhat and Bharadia's research focuses on using these common RFID tags to achieve passive sensing. Traditional passive sensing methods mostly rely on analog-to-digital converters, which can measure stimuli and convert them into computer-readable digital values, but they consume a lot of power and require additional battery support. Bhat and Bharadia tried to explore a method that does not require a converter and directly uses the chip to sense stimuli.
They found that analog sensing interfaces are the key to solving this problem. Unlike digital interfaces, analog interfaces can directly convert the voltage/current changes generated by sensors into parameters of wireless signals, thereby realizing wireless transmission of data. RFID tags, as commercial, low-cost and easily accessible sensor devices, are ideal for achieving this goal.
Bhat and Bharadia's sensors are not only low-cost, but also have the ability to sense and report stimuli in real time. This means that whether in agricultural management, sports performance indicators or occupancy detection, this battery-free RFID sensor can provide more accurate and timely data support.
For example, in agricultural management, by deploying large-scale soil moisture sensors around the fields, moisture content can be measured remotely and irrigation methods can be adjusted according to current conditions. This not only improves irrigation efficiency but also reduces costs. Similarly, in the field of sports, by embedding RFID sensor tags into the soles of shoes, athletes' sports indicators such as jumping ability can be monitored in real time, providing more accurate data support for training.
In addition, this battery-free RFID sensor also has broad application prospects in areas such as parking lot occupancy detection and environmental monitoring. They can collect a large amount of inaccessible information in real time, providing strong data support for the development of the next generation of artificial intelligence.
Bharadia said: "Artificial intelligence is now everywhere, and it is driven by data provided by sensors. We are on the cusp of a revolution, and new sensors will collect data to power the next generation of artificial intelligence. The use of battery-free sensors allows us to collect a lot of inaccessible information-they can enhance data collection, and this innovation marks a truly important direction for the future."

A Glimpse into the History of Pocket Watches
Pocket watches first emerged in the early 1500s in Europe, offering the convenience of portable timekeeping for the first time. At first, these were large, spherical objects resembling small clocks rather than the sleek pocket watches we know today. Known as "clock-watches," they were initially bulky and inaccurate, worn as pendants rather than tucked in a pocket. However, they marked a monumental leap in personal timekeeping, and by the 17th century, technological advancements improved their accuracy and reduced their size.
In the 18th and 19th centuries, pocket watches became symbols of sophistication and status. Nobles and gentlemen sported gold- or silver-cased watches with intricate engravings and embellishments. The watch case and design often reflected the owner’s social standing and aesthetic taste, and these timepieces became cherished heirlooms. During the Industrial Revolution, improved manufacturing techniques and mass production brought pocket watches to a broader audience, making them affordable for the middle class.
By the early 20th century, wristwatches gradually overtook pocket watches, especially after World War I, when soldiers appreciated the wristwatch’s convenience. Despite this shift, pocket watches retained their status as collectibles and symbols of fine craftsmanship, cherished by horologists and history lovers alike.
Types of Vintage Pocket Watches
Vintage Pocket Watches come in various styles, distinguished by design, function, and mechanism. Knowing these types can help collectors understand their significance and make informed decisions about their investments.
Open-Face Watches: Open-face pocket watches, as the name suggests, have no protective cover over the dial. This style offers a straightforward view of the time without any hindrance. The crown is often positioned at 12 o'clock, making them easy to read and operate. These became particularly popular in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
Hunter-Case Watches: These pocket watches have a spring-hinged cover that protects the face from dust and impact. The case often features beautiful engravings or monograms, and many hunter-case watches include ornate designs, making them as decorative as they are functional.
Half-Hunter Watches: A hybrid of the open-face and hunter-case designs, half-hunter watches have a cover with a small, glass-enclosed center that allows wearers to read the time without fully opening the cover. This style combines both practicality and protection, and it was especially favored in the 19th century.
Key-Wind Watches: Before the invention of the stem-winding mechanism, pocket watches were wound using a separate key. Key-wind watches reflect the early craftsmanship and simplicity of pocket watch technology. Although less convenient, they hold a unique charm and are popular among collectors for their historical authenticity.
Stem-Wind Watches: In the mid-19th century, the stem-wind mechanism was introduced, allowing users to wind the watch through the crown rather than a separate key. Stem-wind watches offer greater convenience and durability, and they were essential in transforming pocket watches into everyday accessories.
Railroad Watches: Precision was crucial on railroads, where accurate timing prevented collisions and ensured safety. Railroad pocket watches had high-quality movements and met strict standards of accuracy, durability, and legibility, and they remain celebrated for their technical precision and historical importance.
The Mechanisms of Vintage Pocket Watches
Vintage pocket watches feature fascinating mechanical movements, which distinguish them from today’s digital and battery-powered timepieces. Understanding these mechanisms is essential for both collectors and enthusiasts.
Mechanical Movements: Most vintage pocket watches use manual-wind mechanical movements, which rely on a coiled spring to power the gears and wheels. The user must wind the watch regularly to keep it running. This mechanical system is known for its intricate engineering, making it a marvel of early horology.
Balance Wheel and Escapement: At the heart of the movement lies the balance wheel, which regulates the watch’s timekeeping. The escapement, another critical component, controls the release of energy from the mainspring to the balance wheel. Together, they ensure consistent and accurate timekeeping.
Jewel Bearings: To reduce friction, vintage pocket watches often include jewel bearings, tiny synthetic rubies or sapphires placed at friction points. The number of jewels (typically between 7 and 23) indicates the quality of the movement, with higher jewel counts associated with greater precision and value.
Complications: Some pocket watches come with added functions, or complications, such as chronographs (stopwatches), repeaters (chimes), or calendars. These features enhance the watch’s complexity and value, making them highly sought after by collectors.
Collecting Vintage Pocket Watches
Collecting vintage pocket watches is an art in itself. While these timepieces offer aesthetic and historical value, there are important factors to consider for anyone entering the world of vintage watch collecting.
Identify Quality and Brand: Renowned brands like Patek Philippe, Vacheron Constantin, Waltham, and Elgin are known for producing high-quality pocket watches. Familiarity with these names and their distinctive characteristics helps collectors determine the authenticity and value of a piece.
Inspect the Condition: The watch's condition affects its value significantly. Watches in original, well-preserved condition are more valuable than heavily restored ones, though some restoration is acceptable if it is professionally done. Scrutinize the case, dial, hands, and movement to ensure they are in good shape.
Understand the Market: The value of vintage pocket watches can fluctuate based on market demand. Watches with unique features, limited production, or significant historical provenance tend to hold or increase in value over time. Researching current market trends and auction results can guide purchasing decisions.
Care and Maintenance: Vintage pocket watches require careful handling and regular servicing to maintain their functionality. Dust, moisture, and physical shock can damage mechanical movements, so proper storage in a dry, cool environment is essential. Periodic cleaning by a skilled watchmaker ensures the movement remains in good condition.
The Cultural Significance of Vintage Pocket Watches
Vintage pocket watches carry a cultural resonance that transcends their function. In the 18th and 19th centuries, they were symbols of status, wealth, and refinement. Often passed down as family heirlooms, these watches carried sentimental value and were seen as prized possessions that linked generations.
Even today, pocket watches have a nostalgic appeal. They are often associated with historical figures, such as Abraham Lincoln, who famously carried a gold pocket watch inscribed with a message from his jeweler. Pocket watches also appear in literature and film, symbolizing themes of time, memory, and legacy. For instance, in classic novels and films, pocket watches often represent an enduring connection to the past or serve as metaphors for the passage of time.
Notable Vintage Pocket Watches
Some pocket watches have achieved legendary status due to their exceptional craftsmanship or historical association. For example:
The Patek Philippe Henry Graves Supercomplication: Made in 1933, this watch features 24 complications, including a celestial map of New York City. It was created for banker Henry Graves Jr. and is considered one of the most complex pocket watches ever made.
The Breguet No. 160 “Marie Antoinette”: Commissioned for the French queen, this watch is a masterpiece of 18th-century horology with numerous complications. Its intricate movement and opulent design reflect the luxury and artistry of its time.
Conclusion
Vintage Pocket Watches encapsulate an era of artistry, precision, and innovation. Whether an heirloom, a collector's item, or a personal investment, each watch tells a story of craftsmanship and tradition. From the intricate mechanical movements to the beautifully crafted cases, these timepieces continue to fascinate collectors and enthusiasts alike.
While the wristwatch has largely replaced the pocket watch, the cultural and historical value of these vintage timepieces keeps them in demand. For collectors and horology enthusiasts, vintage pocket watches offer a unique blend of aesthetic appeal, historical significance, and lasting quality, making them enduring treasures in the world of fine timepieces.
