Sometimes something needs to go very wrong in order to go right in the end as Super Mario 64 (Nintendo EAD, 1996) teaches us.

I saw and recognized my community college campus in a meme, so I jumped in like in Super Mario 64 or Paprika, and then I ran around until I had to fight my supposedly evil clone to the death in some random dorm. 

Got a power star before waking up.

What happened in the three seconds after Mario and Luigi grabbed the Power Star?

aka: me probably spending way too much time coming up with a reason why the Bros swapped places!

They are falling, and Mario quickly grabs Luigi into a fierce bear hug, pulling him close and turning them over in the air so he takes the harsh hit of the ground as they land.

They lie there. Bowser's fire engulfs them. They hold each other, preparing to die in each other's arms - the last physical contact they will ever have; but nothing happens.

They open their eyes and gape with wonder, as they see the fire swirling right around them, but there is no pain.

Astonished, they know immediately what has happened. And what's more incredible, is that they can feel the Star's power absorbing into them. Not just in themselves, but through each other. They look into each other's eyes, and see swirls of colour from the Star dancing in them (the windows to their souls). They are glowing with the same beautiful multicolours. Their skin tingles with the energy.

For a moment they are agasp. Luigi clutches Mario's arms, and Mario brings his hand behind Luigi's head, pulling him closer. Their eyes never leave each other's.

Without even saying a word, they communicate.

The Star has given them its power. They know what they have to do. Together.

And as the flames clear, they stand.

Fact: Ztars are the antithesis of Power Stars. They radiate darkness and negative emotions. For every Power Star, there may be a Ztar equivalent.

Much like Stars, Ztars can be used as fuel by the people of Mario’s Universe.
