Crypt of Reason - Stargazer
Progressive Doom/Death Metal from Homyel, Belarus
CRYPT OF REASON hails from Homiel, Belarus. Formed in 2008, the band released only one EP in 2013. They had nearly completed writing their debut LP when Pavel, the main songwriter, passed away unexpectedly in 2016. Despite this tragedy, the band has persevered and is proud to present “Stargazer” as a tribute to his memory.

Photo link to a Youtube video by Michael Dowd
Michael Dowd lived a life of love in action and he thrived in the thrill of being alive! On Saturday October 7, while in his sleep, he returned to the infinite joy that he had never left.
Jordan Perry and Peter Melton at PostDoom.
I arose from sleep this morning. One of the first things I read online was from a friend onFacebook: "My feed is a case study on collective trauma."
We're hurting.
Mostly I somnambulate, not wishing to awaken. Nevertheless I do appreciate people like Michael Dowd who aknowledge our dreadful predicament and ecourage a living imagination in it.

We're doomed
Tumblr media
The 'we' of course is all of humanity and a few other gazillion sentient beings.
And we don't seem to care given our continued proclivity to carry on with business as usual.
COP28: what a joke.
As if another talking shop was going to eviscerate the oil and gas producers or call time on our desire for more...consumption.
"Ah, you ol' misery guts."
Yes, that's right!
I am miserable but it's actually a lot worse than that. I feel a deep sense of guilt and leaden foreboding and can't help feel that the Darwinian experiment that makes us behave like we're Gods -- yes, Gods I say -- has gone desperately, terribly wrong.
Perhaps, though, this is our lot: a slow form of inexorable suicide.
In that space, I can't help but feel I've outlived any usefulness I might have had.
"Nihilist, to boot."
Guilty, I suppose.
...
Sorry that today's pithy little post isn't more upbeat but I can't write with a faux expression of hope or solution-mongering -- as if either of those will do us much good.
Blessings, Julian

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT
Tumblr media
It’s the end of March already? Damn. Join me as I recap releases that slipped under the radar recently.
NEW IN MARCH
Gentle Beast by Gentle Beast
Gentle Beast of Basel Switzerland put out their self titled album this month, and boy is it addictive. The second track, Joint Venture is a massive dose of heavy psych laced with manic energy and eye watering riffs. Greedy Man snarls and pounds its way under your skin with a searing guitar solo and attitude that won’t quit. Caterpillar injects a catchy hook into your bloodstream that you won’t be able to shake. Caution: album may cause fist pumping, head banging, and other uncontrollable movements. 🤘
Cold Mountain by Dhyana
If you have a weakness for drone metal like I do, then Louisiana’s Dhyana is just what the buddha ordered. The meditative sludge EP Cold Mountain was written under the influence of Japanese zen poetry. There are just two tracks, but each is a vast instrumental soundscape that evolves through time and space. Drop in and zone out with the twisting riff and hypnotic drum groove laid down in Sky Above, Great Wind.
OTHER JUICY RELEASES FROM THIS QUARTER
El Rey Del Aquelarre by Santo Fuzz
I rarely cover singles, but there are two in this list that couldn’t be ignored. Santo Fuzz is conjuring up occult stoner doom in Silao, Mexico. El Rey Del Aquelarre, creeps in by candlelight, offering an old-timey horror vibe that’s sure to make the skeletons in your closet quake with delight.
god by PVRS
Belgian postdoom duo PVRS single, god, is a sludgy beast. The song hits that elusive sweet spot; it’s bristling with hard edges, but melodic enough to sing along to. Looking forward to their full album, due out in September.
Desde el Bosque by Moodoom
Buenos Aires doomers Moodoom brought us back to the 70’s with their album Desde el Bosque. The heady combination walking blues grooves and proto doom swagger have kept this album on heavy rotation at casa D&D.
Pulse by Regulus
Sheffield heavy psych outfit Regulus released their latest album back in January, and honestly I’m surprised these fuckers aren’t already a household name. The songs on Pulse are gritty, groovy, and absolutely wipe the floor with your face. Lead singer Chloé Jolivel’s voice has a blues-rock bite that’s effortlessly cool. Contagion is a particular favorite, but let’s be honest— every single track rips. If you like your melodies soaked in gravelly blues and punctuated with epic guitar work, this album needs to be next in your playlist.

"Beyond Hope and Fear: Staying (mostly) positive in abruptly disturbing times" - Michael Dowd, 2021
Michael Dowd delivered this online sermon August 2021 for Community Unitarian Universalists of Brighton, Michigan. Following Michael's death in October 2023, the service leader of that sermon (Terry Sharik) and I (Michael's widow, Connie Barlow) decided in 2024 to edit and post this sermon as a legacy piece.
As video editor, I extracted the sermon from the full church service video — and lo and behold discovered that I myself told a Story for All Ages during the service. So that is included too. The story was titled "Helping Forests Walk", and I moved it from near the beginning of the service to the end of this video. So it is Michael's sermon that begins right away.
For a well-organized and linked list of all of Michael Dowd's videos during the last half of the 18 years he and I lived on the road, visit the archival webpage I created for exactly that purpose. Its title: "Michael Dowd: Postdoom Pastor": https://thegreatstory.org/michaeldowd...
And absolutely do visit the Postdoom.com website that Michael founded in 2019. The new leadership since Michael's death have been greatly improving the website graphics, accessibility, and resources for serving the community for which it was designed. Bravo!

Reverend Michael Dowd discusses his journey on collapse with Prof Bendell and guests
Michael Dowd is known today for his leadership in the realm of “post-doom," which his website defines as: "A fierce and fearless reverence for life and expansive gratitude — even in the midst of abrupt climate mayhem and the runaway collapse of societal harmony, the health of the biosphere, and business as usual."
“Post doom, no gloom," Dowd suggests, is the stage of the grief cycle beyond mere "acceptance." Three years after posting on youtube his first "postdoom conversation" (with Shaun Chamberlin), the site now offers a total of 85 — including a conversation with me in March 2020. Michael has also posted more than a dozen of his own, information-dense videos to serve as a crash course for understanding our global predicament, with special attention to "ecological overshoot, the already decades-long collapse of thermo-industrial civilization, and how it is still possible to live life fully and love the life you live."
Dowd's personal journey is from Roman Catholic upbringing, to evangelical student, to liberal protestant minister, and now his own brand of “post-doom pastor". His mentors include Thomas Berry (1914–2009), whose inspirational writings on the evolutionary epic turned Dowd into a religious naturalist in 1988, followed by Dowd's first book in 1991, Earthspirit: A Handbook for Nurturing an Ecological Christianity. In 2015, Dowd became an acolyte of the originator of environmental sociology — a mentor he would never meet. Two weeks after William Catton died, Michael encountered Catton's 1980 book on a recommendation by John Michael Greer. Overshoot: The Ecological Basis of Revolutionary Change, is the book Dowd credits for his shift away from climate activism into the final stages of the grief cycle, culminating in, what he calls, “post doom, no gloom collapse trust and love-in-action".
The Q&A will cover topics such as:
1. How Dowd sees collapse, ecocide, and possible NTHE as “religious failure”.
2. How he shifted from evolutionary evangelism into his “post doom, no gloom” work.
In addition, towards the end there is a discussion on the role of activism, and the focus of such.

Preamp Disaster & Palmer
«Noise From The Underground»-Tour

Preamp Disaster & Palmer was originally published on The Art 2 Rock

TEOTWAWKI- TRIBUTE TO REV. MICHAEL DOWD
We all loved Michael and he loved all of us. Join Eliot, Jennifer and Sandy to talk about Michael's life and how he touched us to the core. RIP Rev. Michael Dowd - forever in our hearts. "Michael Dowd (1958 - 2023) was an American author, lecturer, and advocate of ecotheology and post-doom. His 1991 book, EarthSpirit, launched his public speaking career, grounded in the epic of evolution, religious naturalism, and progressive Christianity."
"Rev. Dowd shows how a meaningful science-based understanding of human nature, death, and the trajectory of big history can offer a realistically hopeful and inspiring vision of the future. He also offers practical tools for growing in right relationship to reality that can enrich and even transform one's life and interaction. Uniquely gifted at building bridges between religious and non-religious people, Michael shares humanity's common creation story in ways that uplift and expand heart, mind, and soul. His passion is showing how a science-informed spirituality can inspire each of us to live with greater integrity, joy, and zest for life — and can also deepen appreciation of traditional spiritual insights." "We boomers are not only the generation in power now; we are also the generation whose numbers (and previous decades of lavish consumption) make us pointedly responsible for rising levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. "Richer than kings!" my wife and I regularly remind ourselves whenever we enjoy a fresh avocado in Colorado in winter, when we take a hot shower at the mere turn of a tap, when we receive quality dental care, when we listen to music or audiobooks on our iPods, when we never go hungry. But what kind of a world and life prospects will we bequeath to our grandchildren?" #eliotjacobson #revmichaeldowd #thegreatstory #postdoom
