My students sometimes struggle with the ‘were Greek temples more impressive than Roman temples?’ style essay q that writes itself, so I made a comparative visual of the four Prescribed Source temples: the Parthenon, the Temple of Zeus at Olympia, the Pantheon and the Temple of Portunus in the Forum Boarium.
I’ve visited all of these and, in my head, the Parthenon is the biggest (even though I know it’s not), but I don’t think I even realised how massive the Pantheon is 🤯
(In my head, the Parthenon is the biggest. That Acropolis approach is reponsible I’m sure)

Dead crab that washed ashore. The carapace had detached from the rest of the body and washed up separately, but its still a clear match in my eyes.
You can see how its last legs are modified (or flattened I guess) for swimming.

I thought I’d work on some portraits for the Roman gods who appear in my post-Ragnarok AU! I don’t know if y’all are interested in seeing these, but they were lots of fun to draw, so I’m going to share them anyway :DDD
At the top is Vesta, goddess of the hearth, home, and family (Greek equivalent is Hestia). Next is Mercury, god of translations and interpreters, and messenger for all other gods (Greek equivalent is Hermes). And last is Portunus, god of ports and gateways (usually conflated with the Greek god Palaemon)!
I know my designs are pretty tame, I just can’t bring myself to go wild and do something like the Greek era games ^^;; I wanted mine to at least look cohesive and kinda Roman (plus it’s easier for me to draw loll). In any case, feel free to share your thoughts, if you want! Which ones do you think will become Atreus and Calliope’s allies/enemies? XDDD

Portunus crabs drift throughout their larval stages in asteroid belts. They are difficult to sample due to the complexity of their habitats, making their life cycle and migration pattern understudied.

#2013 - Portunus armatus - Australian Blue Swimmer Crab
Tumblr media
AKA Blue manna, Blueys, and Jennies (for females). Formerly part of Portunus pelagicus, until DNA evidence and close anatomical study split that genus into four species. It might not be blue, and it's missing the most distinctive part of the anatomy, but it's definitely a Blue Swimmer.
Tumblr media
This is the fifth leg, flattened into a paddle. They can swim quite well for a crab, which combined with their aggression can lead to alarming encounters with you're swimming or wading in the same ocean.
Blue Swimmers are an important recreational fishery in Australia, and populations are generally healthy, but have collapsed where overfishing is combined with pollution.
They live in estuarine and marine waters from theintertidal down to 50 m depth, moving to deeper water in winter, or out to sea when fresh water enters estuaries. They prefer areas with flat muddy or sandy bottoms with seagrass or algae where they can hunt small fish and other crustaceans, molluscs, and worms, and supplement the diet with algae and seagrass. They reach maturity in one year, and after three years may have an 80cm claw span.

Neewollah
Trickster Halloween (Aug. 31st)
Long story short, I'm celebrating a variant of Halloween on the 31st of every month that has a 31st.
See here for a Wheel of Halloweens Explainer regarding what the fuck this is about.
Neewollah Inspiration
Right, so off the bat, I do not care for Lammas or Lughnasadh. No hate, but no resonance.
There is, however, a Roman festival in August called Portunalia that honors Portunus, a two-faced counterpart of Janus, both gods of doors and portals, both symbolized by keys. Portunalia is celebrated by throwing keys in a fire while being very sad and upset.
Simultaneously, I have always been fascinated by Lying Contests and ritual obfuscation, and Portunas is literally two-faced (yes, i'm applying modernity to classicity, it's a choice), and we got ourselves a theme.
Neewollah Rituals, Rites, & Traditions
The Two Faced Mask
For Neewollah, and possibly workings of similar nature going forward, I'm going to want to create a mask that gives me two faces. Ideally, I would like this to be a permanent tool/icon/idol in its own right, but for now I'll be making temps.
The plan for the moment is the classic comedy/tragedy dichotomy, but when I create the permanent idol, I'll probably dive deeper into warring duality.
The purpose of the Duality Mask is to take on a trickster guise, saying one thing to manifest the opposite on the principle of, "anything that can go wrong, will." Essentially, I'm going to feint in one direction, then run like hell for the thing I actually desire.
The Seven Trickster Keys
To manifest my desires, I'm going to create Seven Trickster Keys. One for each of the seven major senses: sight, sound, taste, touch, smell, movement, and self.
The Keys are meant to be destroyed, and will be made specifically from paper. In the future, I may go for really ornate ones, but simplicity is also fine.
However they're made, I'm going to write on one side of each key a good thing for that sense I want to call, and on the opposite a bad thing to banish.
Burning The Keys
My goal is to hit a liminal time, sundown or midnight. I will, one at a time in the above listed order, burn the keys. As I burn them, I will loudly talk about what a shame it is to lose the thing I want to banish. Just, making a big deal of it going away. Big show. Lay it on with a trowel.
No mention of the good stuff yet.
Once they're all burned, I'm going to begin talking about the things I do want, but in the same terms.
"Gee, how am I going to handle all this financial success, however will I cope with finding true love, how even can I stand having stability, gosh that new car is gonna be really a big responsibility," and so on.
As I do, I'm going to take a bit of the ash and tap it on the forehead of the mask to capture the knowledge of how to gain what I desire, the backs of my hands to grasp it, and the tops of my feet to set me walking the path to my goals.
Once I have very thoroughly assured the universe that the best way to screw with me is to give me those good things and steal away the bad things, I'll gather the ash for future use in ritual, unmask, and either dispose of the temp, or when I have a permanent duality mask, return it to its place.
The Backhand Bowl
Wouldn't be a Halloween without candy, but Neewollah is not about just having things. I've checked and I'm definitely on my own for the Keys unless my twin joins in (obfuscation rituals being uncomfy for my partner), so the Backhand Bowl may also be me on my own unless one or both choose to partake in this part.
Either way, the idea is that to take a candy, you must ask to take a candy and be told no...while the person telling you no gives you the candy. This is actually a joke in my circle, of dramatically refusing a request while performing it, so I'm not fussed about this one.
But assuming solo practice, in my case I will likely just announce that I don't want a piece of candy while I eat that tasty lie candy.
Food, Drink, & Celebrating
Neewollah is largely about the Trickster Keys, so there's nothing I have planned for ritual feasts or drink at this time. First year, first time, so I may develop traditional Neewollah foods later.
I do have the idea that, if I find myself in a place to celebrate with others, I'll probs see about games like Two Truths & A Lie, Never Have I Ever, or a Lying Contest.
Obviously, though, I may still have like, pizza and a couple drinks, it's a Halloween, after all.
Anyway, that's Neewollah, the Trickster Halloween!
Wish me luck, play along if you choose, and if you take this on, let me know!

ITS A LAIR CLEAN OUT BABY
^ link to the nursery tab here
get these abbhorrent beasts out of my sight these dergs were well loved for however long they stuck around but I never found the time to give them proper lore or I never get excited about the lore I wrote for them.
Memeus (the xxy sky dancer) is four years old, Bifrons (the guardian below) is two years old. Falx (the koi mirror) has a fully written short story and Portunus has his own adopt... I think they're all nice in their own ways but its time to expand the lair.
they're all 50kt so go ham.

The Temple of "Fortuna Virilis" or "Portunus" in Rome. The name is debated but the Temple was dedicated to the God Portunus. In Roman times the Temple sat on the river Tiber's bank at a major bend. This made it important as Portunus guarded livestock, grain, keys, doorways and entrances. Seeing as most goods like cattle, food and grain were barged up the Tiber, it stands to reason that the god would watch over valuable cargoes coming up to and from Rome. Barges carrying cattle to be unloaded at the forum boarium (cattle markets) were especially believed to be directly watched over by Portunus. Along with the Maison Carree in Nimes, France, they are considered two of the best preserved Roman Temples.

@xfortunax location: temple of portunus  notes: fors fortuna
Keeping a low profile seemed important in this city, and when all else failed it was important to have either enough money or connections to get out of trouble. His mother was a triumvir, top of the food chain as far as the senate was concerned, which meant that on a good day Giovanni could get away with most things. Something about having an award winning smile and very pinchable cheeks. Being lucky never hurt either. Today was a very big day for a very big patron of his, not physically big but the avariel did try. The Romans didn’t celebrate like they used to, but people were leaving coins and other offerings at Caio’s temple - praying to a goddess that they got all wrong.
Naturally, Giovanni had been on holidays, he’d been on Mykonos when his sister called him to tell him the latest and greatest coming out of Rome. Making the pilgrimage back to this city was a yearly venture, he owed it Caio as much and paying the right respects seemed a good a way as any for GIovanni to express his gratitude. Finding Fortuna was easier than it used to be, Caio had this... Presence about him now whereas the avariel had always felt so completely human before. Saddled next to the other along the fence, Gio took his place next to the demigod. A couple passed them from the Tiber and shambled up the steps towards the temple, “Fortis fortuna adiuvat,” Giovanni offered the pious, elderly pair before he gave Caio the attention that the creature was owed. “Did it hurt?” The vampire started, this one never got old. “When you fell from heaven?”

Creature Corner: Outsider (Elemental) part 5
Tumblr media
 Conclusions
Like all outsiders, elementals evoke a sense of a larger cosmos, though perhaps not one that we are used to with morality plays or tricksters and guardians. Instead, these beings lend a certain otherworldliness to what are traditionally worldly elements, a spark of the divine in the constituent components that make up our universe.
The spiritual connection to the elements and by extension the natural world draws a lot of parallels to spirit worship, and in many Pathfinder settings, that connection may run deeper, even in arcane circles. (though perhaps not weirdly thirsty as certain real-world alchemical orders were).
Of course, gaming elemental lore differs heavily from the real-world equivalent already, using the names for different types of elementals for other creatures and even the planetouched “geniekin” ancestries, whereas the “true” elementals being more akin to animate masses of the element in question.
Of course, the broad spectrum of what counts as an elemental also includes things from other cultures, most prominently genies (or to use the real-world term, djinni), which in real-world middle-eastern mythology were akin to angels, demons, and even fey spirits. Meanwhile, in Pathfinder and other rpgs, they are arranged along elemental lines, each with their own lore and disposition. Such genies are powerful beings, and yet oddly familiar in their outlook despite being composed of a single element.
And then of course there are the multitude of other elemental beings out there, ranging from mephits to the fey-like veela of Slavic mythos, and those tied to specific elements such as sandmen, salamanders, invisible stalkers, and portunus. Some of these are exotic variants on more traditional elementals, while other seem to have more complex and fully realized bodies. This has interesting implications, as it implies that the elemental plane these beings come from has enough variety in it’s composition to support such beings, perhaps exotic elements that exist outside of the norm for most of the material plane?
Going beyond elementals, this also marks the conclusion of our look at the outsider creature type as a whole. We’ve seen a bevy of interesting beings that adhere to the cosmic ideal of morality, and those that exist beyond it. We’ve seen servants of the gods, and those that would rather see them cast down. Truly, despite the central premise of beings that exist outside the natural order of the material world, the outsider type has some of the greatest diversity in the entire Pathfinder system, so much so that 2nd Edition outright broke it down into several parts, seeing how different they were.
There are only a few creature types left to look over, but I hope you’ll join me for the rest of the journey!
