Svt & learning to cook food from s/o’s homecountry (aka not korean food). A different culture & food for each member would rlly cool
making you a meal from your country
content: established relationship, fluff, foreign reader (non-korean), etc.
wc: 872
a/n: this was such a cute concept omg!! i picked the food items and the home countries at random btw sorry if i got some dishes wrong pls lmk if there's any corrections i should make 😭
masterlist
seungcheol -
he wouldn't be able to stand your homesickness for even one second, feeling too sad at your sadness and deciding to do everything in his power to make you feel better. he'd ask around for traditional south african dishes leading him to make you some chakalaka while you were at work. the hours of trial and error wouldve been worth it the moment he saw the happiness in your eyes at his efforts.
jeonghan -
being quite used to simply ordering takeout whenever he so pleased, jeonghan was not used to cooking at home too often. however, if his sweet s/o wanted some homemade tom yum soup, then he'd deliver! after a quick call to mingyu (and an hour or two of messing around in the kitchen), he'd be ready with your food. he loves thai food, so this would be a win-win situation for him.
joshua -
he knew you sometimes missed australia and were unable to go back and forth as you pleased, so josh would occasionally indulge you in making meat pie for you, following a recipe you'd once made for him early in your relationship.
jun -
he'd had indian food before and loved it, so it did not take any convincing for him to decide to make you some indian street food. he'd do it out of his own volition pretty often, actually. by now, he had mastered the art of various dishes, specially panipuri, which he would frequently make for you, and sometimes he'd even share some with his members.
soonyoung -
if he sensed you growing homesick and missing your usual chinese cuisine, he'd go out of his way to seek out jun or minghao to ask what food may make you feel a bit better. he'd then take on the task of making you the most delicious street breakfast, jianbing, knowing it wasnt too difficult a task for him and that it was a meal you'd often have in your youth.
wonwoo -
wonwoo was quite known for his lack of ability in the kitchen, but that would not stop him from making you some laksa whenever you were feeling particularly homesick. despite not knowing how to make any other singaporean dishes, he'd have specifically mastered at least one in order to take care of you in such a domestic way whenever the opportunity arose.
jihoon -
never having been one to cook much (he'd much rather stick to washing dishes), he'd struggle a lot through making you some pastéis de nata for your anniversary, deciding to make a korean-portuguese fusion of meals to celebrate your relationship. ok, maybe he called mingyu over to help, but the joy in your eyes as you shared the meal with him had made it worth all of mingyu's nagging as he followed his instructions to the letter.
seokmin -
he's never been to spain, but he's had a few spanish meals throughout his life, so he'd quickly understand why you'd often complain about the lack of authentic spanish food near your shared apartment. would take it upon himself to learn how to make paella in the most perfect manner imaginable just to see a smile on your face.
mingyu -
making a pizza from scratch was easier said than done, but mingyu had taken on the task the moment you let him know of the fomo you felt at seeing him and his best friends explore your country of origin, italy. you'd watched nana tour happily, but still felt a bit off at knowing you couldn't be there with your boyfriend. but fear not! mingyu was about to bring the authentic italian experience to your door!
minghao -
he's been to the united states so many times by now that he just knows american food by heart. wouldnt even need a recipe to know how to make you some classic barbecue on a sunny afternoon. would even make an entire day out of it, grilling under the sun while you sunbathed next to him.
seungkwan -
seungkwan has always thought himself to be quite a good cook. or at least he was quite good at making korean food. japanese food was another story. he knew how badly you missed homemade sushi, never enjoying any from your nearby restaurants. he'd have to ask for your help at some point, but the end result would be the two of you sharing a nice moment making a meal together, so it all went according to plan.
vernon -
he doesnt know how to cook neither korean nor american food, but you best bet he'll try his hardest to make you traditional vietnamese food in the form of bun cha and bánh xèo. it looked easy and like it tasted good, how hard could it be? would try his bestest but eventually need to ask you for help completing the task. a+ for effort, though.
chan -
he already loves mexican food, so making it for you wouldnt even be something you'd have to request from him – he'd just do it on his own! he'd already mastered all types of street food, eventually opting to make you menudo, knowing how much you enjoyed that meal as a child.

a little about my other twst oc!
Tumblr media
She's a girl bc we love women 💞.
Her name is Ilíada Scalecetus and she is twisted from Glut The Shark. Don't mind the slight different art style, it's bc i drew her some time ago.
name: Ilíada Scalecetus
birthday: June 29 (Cancer)
age: 16
height: 192 cm
homeland: Coral Sea
hobbies: Discovering new things
pet peeves: The smell of perfume
favorite food: Paella
least favorite food: Crab legs
talent: Breaking things
Trivia
Ilíada is the Portuguese/Spanish word for "Iliad". Scale is, well, scale. Cetus is the latinized version of "Ketos", an Ancient Greek term that refers to any huge sea monster.
Ilíada has a very muscular build and a defined jawline. 🤫🧏‍♀️
Despite loving sports, she hates PE and is scared to death of receiving a ball on her face, since her nose is extremely sensitive.
Ilíada has hyperosmia, a heightened sensitivity to smell. She suffers a lot with strong smells, especially stinky or chemical stuff. She can smell things from far away as if they were right under her nose.
Bonus, her shark form:
She is scared of cats. She tried to pet one once and it scratched the living shit out of her arm. Cats just hate her.
SHE'S LATINA 🗣️🗣️🗣️
Tumblr media
Not sure if my illustration made her justice, but yes she's jacked! 🙏🛐

Pontevedra, a riverside city in northwest Spain known for its well-preserved old town sprinkled with shops, markets, cafés, and tapas bars. The town also serves as a stop along the Portuguese Way, and in the 16th century was Galicia’s biggest city and considered an important port. We enjoyed a walking tour of the old city with lovely parks and fountains. Along the way a stop to enjoy chorous with chocolate was FANTASTICO! Then on to Combarro, a small fishing village famous for its hórreos, traditional stone grain stores on stilts. This village is one of the only towns in the region to feature this kind of stonework, making it a unique opportunity to observe another way of life. Strolling the tiny streets was like going back in time. Lunch was in courses tasting clams and monk fish in a paella dish of rice.

Your Motogp ask game is amazing!!
🎵 🍴 👅 🐼
Hi Lyanne 👋. I hope your 2024 started well.
Glad people is liking my game.
🎵 Would you rather let rather learn how to play piano with Pol, bass with Joe Roberts or guitar with Zarco? I'd love to learn how to play guitar, but it's Zarco the teacher. So my answer is piano with Pol, he doesn't seem to strict and we might have fun.
🍴 Would you rather have a BBQ with the Binder brothers or Paella with the Márquez? I have to go with BBQ with Brad and Darryn. I'm not that fan of paellas and I can have them at home.
👅 Would you rather learn languages with Dani (Spanish, Catalan, English, Italian, French and some Japanese) or with Miguel (Portuguese, Spanish, Italian, French and English)? This one is a bit tough because I already speak Spanish, English and Catalan, so my obvious choice would be Miguel to also learn Portuguese, but it's Dani and I want to learn Japanese. So Dani it is
🐼 Would you rather use a shark or a bunny as your animal/brand? I'd go with a bunny or any soft-looking animal. The reason is that people will not take you seriously and will overlook you.
Thank you o much

All the food recommendations pls xoxo
Hiiiiii
7. Favorite food from the country that speaks your target language
Spanish: I mostly only have experience with food from Iberia and then especially from the Catalan Countries and Galicia. There are the popular classics like paella and tortilla (with onion) that are popular for a reason (delicious). I also can't get enough of pementos de padrón and polbo á feira. Manzanilla olives are my favourite type of olives and we always try to have some at home. When it comes to sweets there's obviously crema catalana, turrón (both duro and blando) and tarta de Santiago. I could probably go on but now I'm getting hungry and "home"sick.
Portuguese: I really wanted to go to a Brazilian restaurant in Cork but didn't have the time so I can just talk about Portugal. Pastel de nata is like the dessert of all time. I also really loved the Francesinha I had even though ngl they don't look very nice. In Porto we also had something similar to polbo á feira but I don't know what it's called there but like the seafood in general is just amazing. On Madeira you can get bolo do caco and fish dishes with espada which is some deep sea fish they often serve with passion fruit or banana.
Romanian: I didn't actually get to eat any Romanian food so these are just things I want to try. Sarmale, ciorba rădăuțeană, mămăligă.
Yiddish: One of my friends recently made hamentaschen for Purim and matzah brittle for Passover. Shout out to the classic bagel with lox I guess too.
Bonus stuff I tried recently and loved despite not being target languages: Korean tteokbokki, Japanese katsu curry and some tofu dish I forgot the name of, Belgian cherry beer, American lobster rolls.

Tuesday September 10, 2024
Everyone slept in today after two long exhausting days! It was 10:15 am by the time we’d eaten breakfast and packed up and were posing for our morning selfie.
Day Eight on the Camino Portuguese! We had a much deserved easier day, just 6.5 miles to Baiona where we rented what’s turned out to be a fantastic apartment.
The hike was gorgeous, mostly away from the coast over a pass - shaded with the relaxing smell of pine and eucalyptus.
We stopped at the only cafe we saw today for sandwiches and coffee. A wonderful little respite spot where the proprietor was working so hard … it seemed to be his house where he added a counter and sitting space to the side, with a beautiful yard with additional seating and two baños.
We arrived at our apartment about 1:30pm and were so happy they let us check in early. We had an afternoon of lounging by the pool, doing actual laundry versus washing clothes in the sink, and napping … then we walked into town and did some shopping, had a few beers and a great Spanish dinner where we tried the delicacy of Gooseneck Barnacles and Seafood Paella.
We stopped in a large grocery store on our way back up the hill, probably spent 45 minutes there - foreign grocery stores are so much fun! We bought a small bottle of wine to go with the chocolate we bought yesterday.
We’ve sketched out a tentative plan for the rest of the week, and I’ve booked accommodations for the next two nights - always a surprise to see what we end up with, but tonight’s has been amazing!

An Unexpected Portuguese Side Effect
Tumblr media
I have a gigantic love/hate relationship with shrimp. For the majority of my life, it's been on the hate side. This likely stems from the fact that growing up, the only shrimp I ever saw was creepily identically smooth and hanging off a bowl of ketchup. Blah, blah cocktail sauce. It's still gross.
It wasn't until China that I actually started eating shrimp. The texture still occasionally got me though. Then I lived in Central Europe where I rarely saw shrimp outside of frozen sushi boxes. When I moved back to the states, I occasionally would make them for dinner or grill nights, but still, not a protein I particularly enjoyed.
Then I went to Belize and had bad shrimp. After digestive pyrotechnics through the Guatemalan jungle and staying on an island that didn't have running water, I was anti-shrimp for years. I just couldn't. I tried a number of years later and....the smell. I tossed all of them. I couldn't convince myself to get them close to my face.
But I am one who dislikes disliking food. Unless it's a pointless food (iceberg lettuce, water chestnuts, melons -- if I wanted crunchy water, I'd eat an ice cube). I wandered around Lisbon's Time Out Market, looking for a price tag attached to a meal that included something I hadn't had before. I found it in a saffron and shrimp risotto with avruga. (Avruga: fake caviar made out of herring.) Head on shrimp still in the shell. Fresh, ok texture. I was ok with this.
I had more shrimp on a squid ink paella in Nazare. Granted, I was more obsessed with the cuttlefish, but the giant, head on, split tiger prawn was totally worth eating.
Tumblr media
I had a round of seafood rice with shrimp in Aveiro, head and shell on and devourable. I was amazed. I've heard that head on shrimp have more flavor, but the texture of the shrimp was completely different as well. Was this a result of the cooking style? Or...was it leaving the shell on until after they are cooked that was revolutionizing my shrimp experience?
Since returning stateside, I've mastered poop shooting shrimp through the joints of their shells and discovering that the texture of the shrimp is perfect, every time. I get excited to eat the shrimp. I make sure to portion out my bites so I can have shrimp at the end.
Have I finally crossed into a long-term love of shrimp?
Tumblr media
And just a little foreshadowing for my next trip: I focused my Duolingo time on Portuguese quite heavily prior to my time in Portugal. Amazingly, it helped me order food so easily in restaurants. I have played all sorts of Duolingo and never felt like it helped my speaking as much as it did for this trip. Somehow, spending so much time in Portuguese was finally the connection I needed to get French to stick in my head. After years of trying to make any sort of French stick and come back out of my face, the link was Portuguese.
Adeus, Portugal. Bonjour la France!

Where to Eat the Tastiest Street Food in London
London is often associated with high-end restaurants and posh eateries helmed by celebrity chefs. However, the English capital also has an exciting culture of street food through its long-stay markets and pop-up food courts. Furthermore, London has an exciting food scene that encompasses British, European and international cuisine. Find out what and where to experience the best of street food close to Central London hotels.
Southbank Centre Food Market
Open on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, the Southbank Centre Food Market is a convenient choice for tourists. It’s moments from the London Eye and Royal Festival Hall.
Stalls represent British classics such as scotch eggs, sausage rolls, and Cornish pasties. However, there is an excellent variety of global fare including Japanese-style poke bowls, Korean barbecue, Polish sausages, Dutch pancakes, Greek souvlaki, North American sandwiches, and Portuguese custard tarts.
The drinks offering is equally broad, with options ranging from bubble tea and hot chocolate to West Country cider and European craft beers.
Mercato Mayfair Food Hall
Convenient for those staying at hotels near Paddington Station, Mercato Mayfair Food Hall is one of the most unusual places to go for street food in London.
Housed inside a deconsecrated church, the building is appointed with original stained glass windows, vaulted ceilings, and an altar. Spread over two floors, the venue has stalls serving worldwide cuisine, a rooftop terrace, and an atmospheric wine cellar in the crypt.
Food on sale includes pad Thai, lobsters, homemade pasta, ramen, grilled meat, and Malaysian street food with an emphasis on sustainable practices.
Vinegar Yard
Next to London Bridge Station, Vinegar Yard brings together food, drinks, art, and a weekend flea market.
Food is available daily with the offering changing seasonally. In general, you can anticipate such options as Asian street food, burgers inspired by Indian recipes, and Neo-Neapolitan pizzas.
Draught beer sourced from local breweries is rotated frequently while cocktails reflect the season.
Pergola Paddington
Guests staying at hotels near Paddington Station should pay a visit to Pergola. This is a rooftop bar with a street market atmosphere.
Food on the menu includes ciabatta sandwiches, hot chicken, loaded fries, duck pancakes, bao, and dumplings. The offering includes main plates and platters, perfect for sharing or experimenting with different flavours. The popular venue has scores of tables making it a wonderful option if you plan on making an afternoon or evening of it.
Tipples inspired by the seasons include classic cocktails and spritzes with plenty of options for those who do not drink alcohol.
Borough Market
Borough Market is the most famous spot for street food in London. This Thameside market springs to life early each morning with vendors selling fresh produce, pantry items, regional cheese, artisan coffee, and street bites.
Typical dishes cooked at the covered market include Spanish paella, rock oysters from Essex, gourmet sausage rolls, curries from South Asia and Southeast Asia, and traditional apple crumble.
There are several bars where you can sit down with an ale or glass of wine. In fact, these are the perfect destination for a date night while staying at Central London hotels.
