The union representing foremen at British Columbia ports has issued a 72-hour strike notice, according to the association representing its employers. The B.C. Maritime Employers Association (BCMEA) said Thursday that if the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) Local 514 takes strike action, it would begin on Monday at 8 a.m. PT. The BCMEA says the escalation came after it presented the union a final offer on Wednesday, which it says will provide ILWU Local 514 members with significant gains in wages and benefits, as well as a signing bonus.

Port Strike 2024
Right on the heels of Helene we get a massive strike called by the International Longshoreman’s Association, which went into effect today and impacts ports on the east coast and in Texas. The ILA has not yet released their demands, but in their most recent statement from yesterday they highlighted the unfair nature of American shipping and the ways workers are fucked over for company profit. Same old same old.
What You Need To Know:
approximately 45,000 workers are on strike in US ports from Maine to Texas
immediate supply chain gaps will show up in things like imported produce - if you like bananas, stock up now, and freeze them or refrigerate them to maximize their usable lifespan
as of now we don’t know how we can support the strike, but check official ILA channels and accounts and their website linked above for updates
there will be a lot of bad press about this strike. I’ve already seen an article from Barron’s about how dockworkers make six figures but are demanding more. our enemies are NOT working people who make slightly more than we do! our enemies are the shipping companies and freight brokerages who make billions in profit while the ones who transport the goods make less than $1M/year! be prepared to advocate for workers who may be doing better than you’re personally doing - they don’t deserve less, YOU deserve more.
more on the strike from the Associated Press
UPDATE as of 12:00 EST 1 October 2024:
the ILA is asking for a 77% wage increase across the next 6 years and an end to all automation. the counteroffer that was rejected was a 50% increase and limits on automation.
will continue to update as new information emerges

A lot of stuff in the VG artbook looks like it would have worked out great for a DA:I/DATV DLC but would absolutely flop at logistics in a full-fledged game of a DA scale
#🌞#I can see how having a ship as a base of operations would have worked out for a DLC. Maritime DLC? AC: Odyssey marine missions style?#But putting the entire thing on the ship makes little sense in the world as vast as Thedas; it worked out in DOS2 because we majorly visit#very small locations imo; and most of them are Isles Coastal Towns Ports and such. You could run that thang through in a day etc.#Also it would just be a copy of DOS2 after it utilized Lady Vengeance as homebase pretty well (to me)#I can't see how putting your base on a ship works out logistically with the massive terrains we have in Thedas#Areas like Kal-Sharok don't even have coastal access how do you add that into the narrative for it to make sense#The eluvian/crossroads system makes the most sense imo; and it's been teased since TME#Like Skyhold made sense because it was in the middle of everything; Haven made sense; estate made sense; camp made sense.#Like so many things in the early concepts a ship base sounds so cool on paper + would love to explore naval travel given realities of Theda#but I am so glad they did not go through with it as the main concept.#ramblings

ehh. i'm generally pro-labor/pro-unions but this is really bad. keeping ports efficient is a matter of national interest. we are already falling behind the rest of the developed world on this front when we should be leading the way. covid showed us how even minor disruptions to the supply chain can have major effects on our economy.
if it's a short strike, effects will probably be minimal. but a longer strike will probably make inflation worse.
so biden's administration is in an iffy position. they can intervene and then lose some union votes or they don't intervene and get all the blame when inflation gets worse. i do not envy them.
#sorry but logistics is a special interest of mine -- especially port logistics#and i've been calling for automating our ports for years#it needs to happen#banning automation is just not an option#if this can't be resolved i hope the government intervenes -- a good example of america's quasi-tripartism#i don't care if the longshoremen get a raise or whatever#my only issue is this idea of a ban on automation

Loose cable connection destroys bridge?
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) Office of Marine Safety released a report on the Dali bridge ‘allision’ (not a collision) that destroyed the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore MD USA. We all read with amazement at the destruction of this major bridge, which carries much East Coast auto and truck traffic between New York-Philadelphia and Washington DC. The cost to repair it is…

no but my previous job was insane. I'm a 23 years old student working part time and a mentally unstable woman calls the cops on me because she left her house keys in a storage room that's now closed. she's threatening to sue and murder me, not sure in what order, bc I refuse to break inside the luggage storage that is someone's privately owned business. the cops arrive and just stand there enjoying their break from drunken brawls. my boss asks what the fuck I'm still doing there past closing hours. idk mr boss man I just felt like kicking out the cops would further escalate the situation
#reminding myself that the epic highs and lows of port logistics are a vacation in comparison#nobody cares aga
