Parentage

I don’t see a whole lot of fanart of the Cup Brothers’ parents, so I decided to fix that. And I fupping love seeing people’s interpretations of what Cuphead and Mugman’s parents look like because they’re all so unique and they all look quite plausible in being the ones who birthed our sippy bois. I guess this was also an excuse to make some art for Inkwell Convergence, a project that I plan on being my last hurrah for my time in the fandom and at this point is on the furthest back burner, and indulge in some of my favorite interpretations. At this point, I do know that these three continuities in question definitely are involved, and I’ll probably do a rambling about that later about how that works exactly, but for now I’m pretty satisfied with how this turned out.

I also considered drawing Cuphead and Mugman in their respective God Tier outfits (Prince of Light and Page of Heart, respectively), but I figured in interest of the piece I would just have those titles referenced in the shots charging (the colors of both aspects, with the Light and Heart symbols being part of the particle effects.

“It’s still going to be a tough day to get through, even though it’s been over a decade...”

Claire still dresses in all black whenever the anniversary of her brother in law and sister’s death, November 2nd, rolls around, and while the pain of losing them is continuing to dull, the scar is still very much there. I keep saying I’ll get to those entries of Origins, but right now school and work have other plans for me and I have two other projects to get out of the way (and once the semester is over RPs are going to be at the top of the priority list because HNNNNNNGH I’ve left y’all hanging way too frikkin’ long). If you thought the news of two of the people she held dear being found dead in the woods of Inkwell Isle One was bad, imagine how much worse it gets when she found out her parents were responsible for it, add in the fact that she couldn’t help them in their attempt to flee to the Inkwell Highlands, and had no knowledge of what was going on due to very limited communication (not that either woman had a choice since Lynn Manor would pounce on any opportunity to monitor their letters and track both of them down; and Porcia communicating with Alston was already risky considering he was still surviving in the manor). If she learned about Cuphead and Mugman’s existence and, like Alston, also assumed that they were lost as a result of the ambush, it would have been likely that she would’ve killed herself not long after Alston was taken out. The finer details will be addressed later, but for now, take this.

And of course, this will make her more of a target for Percy and Edith to try and make another attempt on her life. Roz and Ludo will be around her nonstop for her protection. Lucius might, too, despite going into the task with very limited knowledge about what happened.

Day 6: Relax on the Beach at night

AT LONG FUCKING LAST IT IS COMPLETE.

It’s time to head home and this does take place canonically between Elder Kettle’s warning (the next installment following “Be Afraid, Boys; Be Very Afraid”) and the actual kidnapping in this continuity. Claire opens up to Lucius about her siblings and that she’s still heartbroken over what happened.

“Happy birthday, my darling sister…”

Weren’t expecting to go on a feels trip, were you? September 6th is Porcia’s (Cuphead and Mugman’s mother; Claire’s sister) birthday, and Claire’s been going out to the grave site every year to bring her sister some flowers and a bottle of Scotch whiskey for Cerrel. It’s a very bittersweet time; remembering the good times they had together and hoping for the best for them after Porcia left the casino, but all those hopes dashed after hearing the tragic news that November all those years ago. All because of Percy and Edith.

Now, I mentioned in another post that Claire does not know that Cuphead and Mugman are her nephews. The way things happened effectively prevented Claire from learning about this even though Porcia was perfectly happy to announce the birth of her sons to her and the rest of her family that she still trusted. What happened that prevented Claire from getting this announcement and why no one told her about her nephews’ existence will be addressed in a later comic, as will Claire finally getting to meet the boys. But for now, I’m gonna use the rest of the day to study.

And yes, I drew every single morning glory and aster in the bouquet (since they are the flagship flowers for September birthdays) in the ink stage without drawing them first in pencil. The Celtic knots all had an initial pencil stage since this is the first time I’ve ever drawn any Celtic knots.

I liked my lemon meringue dress design for Baroness von Bon Bon so much I thought I’d color it. Some parts have a toasted appearance reminiscent of that nice golden brown you get on a meringue. Very summery indeed.

I’m sure there’s an AU where Porcia goes around introducing Cuphead and Mugman just like that otter showing its baby off. And Cerrel panicking because jeez, lassie, ye got to support their heads; those babies are under a month old, ye know.

Two things: Claire and the Victorian roller skates were drawn for another post I have yet to get around to so they make sense; and she’s actually smiling. RUN FOR YOUR LIFE.

I need to draw this Western dude more. Montana Davy needs a coffee every now and again because ranching can be draining.

And now for the mom. I actually designed her first before other members of the Cup family.

Porcia is Claire and Alson’s younger sister, Cerrel’s wife, and Cuphead and Mugman’s mother. At this point I know more about her background, so any origin comics I manage to get out will probably focus on her first until I figure out more of Cerrel’s background.

Main Sketch: I was very much inspired by Mrs. Potts and Chip from Beauty and the Beast--*slaps poster of 2017 version out of way with poster of 1990′s animated version* THE ACTUAL ONE--while designing her outfit and color scheme, though I tried to keep her main purple as balanced between red and blue as possible while still being more red-forward like her siblings. Although her Aunt Molly and cousin Christopher, if I ever finish those sketches, take more direct inspiration in terms of overall design. Also, that stain on the side of her head is most likely cafe au lait.

A. Under her shawl you can see her dress is very short sleeved. Like Claire, she prefers to keep some kind of modesty cover.

B. Side sketch and possible tic of hers, speaking with her mouth blocked by a dainty fist, as if she’s reluctant to speak at all or fears the consequences.

C. When she got sold to the Devil, she worked in the casino as a cocktail waitress (”You’re a pretty girl, you know that? You’d make a lovely waitress.” --The Devil). The first few months were absolutely miserable for her because, well, you wouldn’t want to be around anyone if you were dragged to hell to stay there for good and you hadn’t done anything wrong in your life to deserve it, would you? Just shy and scared being in this predicament.

D. Oh, I’m not gonna make many friends with this one... Before you get up in arms, no, Porcia didn’t have a romantic relationship with King Dice at any time during her servitude to the Devil. Neither one of them had any attraction toward one another. However, Porcia did see King Dice as a friend/mentor she had to invest some degree of trust in to survive her time in Hell and eventually escape. Even Dice knew that she did not belong there. To even get her to a level where she could actually go out and talk to strangers, he had to soften his approach when talking to her and walking her through waitress training. He won’t admit it, but he also convinced her to try and talk to Cerrel when she first saw him. After Porcia was freed, she and Dice did part ways, but she said she hoped he would go on to better things and even leave the casino to pursue his own dreams one day. He has long since forgotten her, but this was due to the Devil altering his memory on request to ease the pain news of her death brought. Again, the origin comics would probably explain all of this much better.

E. The day Porcia was freed, she did have some unfinished business to take care of with her family, which resulted in her giving the greatest Reason You Suck speech ever. And this applied to everyone in her immediate family; she didn’t want to, but she had to call out Claire for her “ignore it and the problem might go away” attitude concerning how she dealt with her parents’ series of crimes, called out Alston for being somewhat of a coward by not standing up for himself, and called both of them out for just sitting there and taking it from Percy and Edith. She calls Percy and Edith out for the monsters they are, disowns them, and refuses to refer to them by anything but their first name. No sir and madam, no mother and father, just Percy and Edith. (”Did you just call your mother by her first name??” “And what’s that to you, PERCY??”)

F. From her wedding with Cerrel. And yes, Aunt Molly helped her make her dress. Will also be doing a comic about this later.

G. Her little bundles of joy. At first after sending the form off with Oliver to The Illustrator, Porcia was scared she would become the kind of mother Edith was. Fortunately, that was not the case as she turned out to be a very loving mommy to Cuphead and Mugman for the short time they were with her. In terms of looks, Cuphead definitely takes after her, but her sweetness and cautiousness manifests in Mugman.

F. The last time Porcia was seen before she was killed. The babies were safely contained in a basket she carried when she and Cerrel attempted to leave Inkwell Isle so they could raise them out in the Highlands without worrying about her awful parents preying on them.

The Characters that inhabit this hive

For now this is where I’m going to keep a master list of my Cuphead OCs. Might be a bit sloppy as reference sheets keep coming in and updating it and the final roll-call sheet I’ll put as a page on my blog all it’s own. And you can ask them stuff! (RPs are gonna be out of the question until the end of the semester, and ones in progress will be picked up as priority)

Around Inkwell Isle:

Oliver, a stork who works with the power that be known as The Illustrator to bring life to the Isles (toon logic in full swing here.) Often called Grampa Bird and works very well with babies and children.

Lala Wooldust, a sheep who lives in Inkwell Isle Two and is usually sleeping and dreaming. Has a Soul Contract with The Devil, rendering her a boss character, that results in her Nightmare Form.

The Dream Kingdom Cavalry, Lala’s legion of soldiers and helpers in her boss fight. Including the noble and loyal Sir Eventide Radiance, the steadfast Roosevelt, the darling Bunny Color Guard, the adorably devoted Poppy Army, and the frightening Nightmare Bat Girls.

The Inkwell Prairie Trio, a family who lives in Inkwell Prairie blazing trails, ranching, and maintaining law, order, and peace in the land. (Final designs to come later)

Montana Davy: A cattle rancher trying to make ends meet by braving the elements and blazing trails. Has a Soul Contract, which makes him a boss character, that he didn’t want to have to agree to and has kept secret from the other two.

Cheyenne Jane: Montana’s kid sister who moved in to help on the ranch. Considers her friends, like Cammie and the Cup Bros, as close family, and makes friends by making them a batch of their favorite food.

Dakota: A native inspired by the Cheyenne and Arapaho tribes in real life who primarily maintains peace between the tribes and incoming settlers. Considers Montana his best friend after he got him out of a serious jam (that’s when he started going by the name Dakota), though when I choose to include him in a drawing or comic will be at my discretion.

The Felt/Billiards Mafia:

Boss English, a crime lord conducting various rackets and operations across entire dimensions. All of it seems to be part of some kind of ridiculously complicated and elaborate revenge plot against The Devil, who he has ties with that will be revealed later.

Lucius Tordici, English’s primary underboss and a keystone minion. Possesses the ability to hop between continuities to locate the other keystones, and though he likes his position as a mobster, he’s a bit hesitant to commit fully to the bigger scheme in the background. Might be developing a crush on Claire, I don’t know for sure.

The Cup Family

The Highlander Clan:

Cerrel Amic, Cuphead and Mugman’s father who was born and raised in the Highlands of Inkwell until he moved to Isle One during his childhood. Was taken in by Elder Kettle after his mother passed away and grew up training to become a knight.

Nana Amic, Cerrel’s mother and the Cup Bros’ grandmother steeped in Celtic heritage. Diligently and lovingly raised her son until she passed away during his childhood.

Lynn Manor:

Claire Lynn, the eldest of the Lynn children who left her parents’ faction to start her own alcohol bootlegging operation following what happened to her younger siblings. She has no knowledge that Cuphead and Mugman are her nephews but will meet them in the future.

Alston Lynn, the middle child of Lynn Manor who has been devoting his life to compiling information regarding the family lineage. Had knowledge of Cuphead and Mugman’s existence at the time he was taken out on the inter-island bridge that he had not shared with Claire because of the circumstances.

Porcia Lynn, the youngest of the Lynn siblings who is Cuphead and Mugman’s mother. Her parents made it very clear she was not wanted and ended up serving time in Hell because of their backing out of a deal to shirk responsibility.

Lynn Manor subordinates, a collection of mooks and servants working for Lynn Manor. Of these, the clock butler, Gilbert Strider, is the only one who thoroughly does not like his job and has served as a more caring and reliable father figure to Claire, Alston, and Porcia than Percy and Edith ever were.

This... ref sheet... has been laying in my folder... since May... and I now decided to finish it before it drove me up the wall. But enough raging over how much work chewed up my time over the summer and that the double whammy of work and school is at play again and let’s talk about this. This is Alston, Claire and Porcia’s brother and Cuphead and Mugman’s uncle though he never got the chance to meet them proper. He is a cream pitcher that you would find in some tea sets.

Main Sketch: My inspirations for him were Milo Thatch from Atlantis, Vin from Jak II, and to some extent Klaus from A Series of Unfortunate Events. Unlike his sisters, he doesn’t exhibit much color-mixing so his main color is practically inherited straight from Edith without mixing in much blue from Percy.

A. He’s been wearing glasses since he was six because his myopia really messes with him. He’s practically blind without his glasses and can’t read anything unless he’s practically kissing the book.

B. (doing my best Allenborough impression) And here we see the middle child of Lynn Manor in his natural habitat, perusing books to his heart’s content. Spending nearly all day in the manor library, he pores over a great many volumes on a great many topics. He will stack each book into the ones he has yet to read in his selection or the ones he has just finished and has had a moment to process a summary of the one he has finally closed. It appears he’s going to be a while here, so we’ll leave him be in his state of absorbing information.

C. Side sketch. Though I wish I had a cream pitcher with me to get an idea of other angles to draw him from especially with his head tilted downward.

D. Don’t get me wrong, this guy absolutely loved his sisters. But after Porcia escaped from Hell and got married, it got a lot harder to keep in touch with her and Claire. In Claire’s case, it was because she was leaving her parents’ faction to start her own base of operations and was being very cryptic about where she was setting up shop as to not be tracked down and killed by Percy and Edith for disowning them. This was even something Porcia didn’t know about. And in Porcia’s case, she was starting a family of her own with Cerrel and communication got cramped what with trying to keep any information away from Percy and Edith and HOPING they don’t intercept their letters. Alston only knew about the existence of his nephews through Percy and Edith and finding out about them going out and harassing his sister.

E. Alston really warmed up to Cerrel in the time leading up to the wedding and the two would often discuss findings at rugged ridge and other family history quite frequently. Cerrel even entrusted his old journal to Alston for his research (”I think you might be able to use this. Here, it’ll be my gift to you.” --Cerrel) and Alston has endearingly referred to the journal as “The Sacred Texts”.

F. The last time he was ever seen before he got shot. After all the years of psyclogical (sometimes physical) abuse, after everything that happened because of his parents’ contract with the Devil, after his little sister and his brother in law were MURDERED and his nephews thought to have also lost their lives because of Percy and Edith, after all of that, Alston finally took a stand and snapped. He outed his parents for what they’ve done, disowned them, and fled the manor with his research to restart his life on Isle Two without any involvement in the mafia. He only made it as far as the connecting bridge before he was cornered by their soldiers and taken out.

Things will be clarified when I get around to writing those entries of Origins Series proper, but for now I’m just happy I got this thing done.

From now until 11:59 PM on November 2nd, I'm adding Porcia and Cerrel to the available characters you can ask questions.

Because it’s raining and rain really helps with my creativity, I figured I might as well draw what Cuphead and Mugman’s paternal grandmother looked like. So, we have Nana Amic (bonus in that Nana can be used as a term for “grandmother” in certain areas). A countryside kind of woman who was born and raised in Inkwell’s Highlands as were many generations before her all the way back to The Legendary Chalice’s time of being alive.

Compared to Porcia’s family, which knew wealth but was dysfunctional as hell, Nana raised Cerrel in an environment full of love yet often tight on money. A lot of their clothes were handmade from any spare fabric lying around or older clothes repurposed into new ones. She made Cerrel’s tartan cap after he lost his lid and had no luck finding it. Overall, just doing whatever she could to support her son.

A design choice I liked was that Nana has hair made of steam. It just kind of roils up in her head and spills out, even with her lid on. Output tends to change based on her emotions (being mad expels a lot of steam) or physical state (flows while awake, dampened while sleeping, no output after she died).

Nana died when Cerrel was a child, only a couple years after they moved to Inkwell Isle One following a period of crop failure in the Highlands. Many years later, he still loves her and misses her dearly. She would have been a wonderful grandmother to Cuphead and Mugman if she were still alive.

It’s late, I can’t think straight anymore. Anyway, just a quick ref sheet, I know she’ll make some appearances in flashbacks in Origins Series.

I... do not recommend trying to engage them. They are incredibly dangerous and they will not hesitate to kidnap or even kill you.

They’ve already killed Alston and Porcia and Cerrel, they’re hellbent on killing Claire, and they’re already plotting to kidnap and assimilate Cuphead and Mugman, even kill them if they refuse.
