Pontiac Firebird Trans Am Turbo, 1989. A limited edition third generation Firebird 20th Anniversary Turbo Trans Am, which was the Indianapolis 500 Pace Car that year. The 20th Anniversary model featured a 3.8-litre turbocharged Buick V6 engine. It was the first Indy Pace Car to not require mechanical modifications to lead the field.

End of an Era: The Trans Am SD-455 emerged during the twilight of the muscle car era, as rising insurance rates and federal regulations stifled high-performance vehicles in the early 1970s.

Miraculous Production: Producing the SD-455 was a feat, given the political climate against high-performance cars. It almost didn't happen.

Firebird's Near Extinction: The Firebird line, including the Trans Am, was nearly canceled after 1972 due to plummeting sales, with a drop of more than 56% from the previous year.

Unique Engine Components: The SD-455 engine featured almost entirely unique parts, from the block and heads to the intake manifold and carburetor.

Initial Power Rating: Initially, the SD-455 was rated at 310 horsepower. However, emissions regulations required a revised camshaft, dropping the rating to 290 horsepower.

Delayed Production: Production delays meant that by the end of 1973, only 295 SD-455 Firebirds had been built, leading to significant customer dissatisfaction.

Costly Upgrade: The SD-455 engine added $521 to the Trans Am’s price and $675 to the Formula, equivalent to over $3,700 in today's money.

Transmission Options: The Trans Am SD-455 came with a four-speed manual transmission standard, while the Turbo 400 three-speed automatic was optional.

Performance Metrics: Despite a compression ratio of only 8.4:1, the SD-455's 395 lb-ft of torque and exceptional airflow made it the quickest car out of Detroit at the time, achieving quarter-mile times in the mid-to-high 13-second range.

Short Production Run: The SD-455's production ended in 1974, with a total of only 1,286 units produced over two years.

Enthusiast Admiration: Despite its short production run, the SD-455 received universal praise for its performance, even as other high-performance cars of the era lagged behind.

Knight Rider Special is the PC Engine's take on a video game based on the 1982 TV series. It plays very similarly to the NES version but is played in a third-person perspective. The player takes control over KITT (the Knight Industries Two Thousand), the speaking car based on the third-generation 1982 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am.

The main goal of the game is to finish each course within a time limit. However, the presence of other cars and trucks (which may shoot at KITT or are simply in the way) make this difficult. Those can be overcome by either shooting them with one of the build-in weapon systems, jumping over them with the turbo boost or simply passing by. It is also important to keep on the road because ramming against lamp posts is unhealthy. KITT's abilities can be upgraded during the course of the game.

Si bien el Camaro y el Pontiac Firebird tuvieron un origen común compartiendo la misma plataforma de General Motors, creo que es fácil de reconocer el capó con el bulto Turbo, característico de la versión Trans Am del Firebird.

De todos modos, las versiones argentinas agregan colores interesantes para encontrar.

Pontiac Firebird Trans Am Turbo Daytona 500 Pace Car, 1981. The 1981 model year was the final run for the second-generation Firebird. There were 2000 Y85 NASCAR Pace Car Turbo Trans Am special edition cars made to commemorate the Daytona 500. They were all powered by the turbocharged 301 ci V8 and came standard with the WS6 handling package.
