hi there! i LOVE your pottery so much. ive been thinking about making my own little friends for a ling time and i think it would be great for my mental health, but i have no idea where to start. do you have any pointers about what types of clay to look for or buy, whether you can fire at home or have to hve a real kiln, etc?
hi! and thank you! 😊
I 100% agree, making little dudes is good for us, it’s amazing how much it settles my brain
as for clay…
there is air dry clay, polymer clay that can be baked in an oven, and ceramic clay that needs to be fired in a kiln.
I can’t remember if I’ve tried air dry clay, but I used to use polymer clay, usually Sculpey. it’s got a few advantages over ceramic clay—mainly that accessing kilns and glazes is expensive. I’d suggest you start with air dry or polymer clay unless there’s a maker-space or pottery studio close to you that you can access.
good luck with your sculpting, I’d love to see what you come up with 😊
other sculptors please add your thoughts and recommendations!

Hip implants with a delta ceramic or oxidised zirconium head and highly crosslinked polyethylene liner or cup had the lowest risk of revision during the 15 years after surgery, a new study led by the University of Bristol has found. The research could help hospitals, surgeons and patients to choose what hip implant to use for replacement surgery. The aim of the study was to establish hip implant materials at risk of revision to help orthopaedic surgeons, and patients, and to improve shared decision making before surgery by identifying hip implants with the lowest risk of revision. The independently conducted research, published in PLOS Medicine today [7 November], was funded by CeramTec and was supported by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) and the NIHR Bristol Biomedical Research Centre (Bristol BRC).

What are the materials used in weapons manufacturing?
Materials used in weapons manufacturing are chosen based on their mechanical properties, durability, and suitability for specific applications. The materials used in weapons manufacturing are:
1. Alloys, including steel, aluminum, titanium, nickel, and cooper. 2. Composites, including carbon fiber, glass fiber, and kevlar. 3. Ceramics, including alumina, silicon carbide, and boron carbide. 4. Polymers, including polyamide, polycarbonate, and polyethylene. 5. Specialized Coatings and Treatments, including ceramic coatings, teflon coatings, and phosphate coatings. 6. Explosives and Propellants, including RDX (Cyclotrimethylenetrinitramine), TNT (Trinitrotoluene), and composite propellants. 7. Electronic and Semiconductor Materials, including silicon, and gallium nitride (GaN).
Alloys
High-Strength Steel - Commonly used in the manufacturing of
Barrels: The main component of a firearm, responsible for propelling projectiles.
Receivers: The housing for the firearm's action, holding essential components.
Slides (pistols): The moving part that houses the barrel and holds ammunition.
Frames (pistols): The base of the handgun, supporting other components.
Bolts and carriers (rifles): Components involved in the firing cycle.
Springs: Essential for firearm operation, providing recoil and return forces.
Steels like 4140, 4340, and maraging steel are known for their toughness, high yield strength, and resistance to wear.............

Self-sensing cantilever design enhances microelectromechanical system performance in challenging environments
Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) are tiny devices that integrate various components, such as miniature sensors, electronics and actuators, onto a single chip. These small devices have proved highly promising for precisely detecting biological signals, acceleration, force and other measurements. Most of the MEMS developed to date are made of silicon and silicon nitride. While some of these devices have achieved promising results, their material composition and design limit their sensitivity and versatility, for instance limiting their use in wet environments. In a recent Nature Electronics paper, researchers at Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) introduced an innovative cantilever design for MEMS based on a polymer, a semiconductor and ceramic. Cantilevers are tiny flexible beams that can adapt their shape in response to external forces or molecular interactions, thus potentially serving as sensors or actuators.
