Sepoy was a term, derived from the Persian sepāhī meaning "infantry soldier", that was used to refer to Indian soldiers, generally with muskets, in the Mughal Empire's armed forces and also Maratha Army. Europeans then used the term to refer to Indians in their colonial forces. One of the names of the rebellion was the Sepoy Mutiny.

Today, Sepoy is the equivalent of "Private" in the Indian and Pakistani armies.

Cawnpore, now Kanpur, was the scene of a siege of East India Company forces and associated civilians in 1857. The EIC surrendered in return for safe passage offered by Nana Sahib, leader of the rebellion on the area. Then, for unclear reason, the departing men, women and children were attacked - no definitive evidence that Sahib authorised this has been found. All the men were killed, with the surviving women and children taken to a villa called Bibighar. 22 days later, although some sepoys refused the order, they were nearly all massacred, with their naked bodies thrown down a well. The British arrived the next day to recapture the city and then carried out horrific summary justice against any rebels who could not prove their innocence. Space precludes me from covering it in depth.

Historically, treason, like the rajah has basically done, would result in Parliament passing an act of attainder, basically seizing your entire personal property plust titles without any judicial process. Not sure what the East India Company's rules were on that. The US constitution specifically bans Congress and the states from passing any bills of attainder.

I'd need to enquire about this, but EIC sepoys apparently swore loyalty to the salt they had eaten, hence the term "true to their salt".

Business Email Compromise/E-mail Takeover (0.24%): Though relatively low in percentage, this type of attack can result in significant financial losses and data breaches.

Debit/Credit Card Fraud/Sim Swap Fraud (11.27%): Card-related fraud remains a significant threat, with criminals targeting card information and SIM cards for unauthorized access.

Demat/Depository Fraud (0.61%): Manipulating demat accounts for fraudulent activities is less prevalent but requires attention.

E-Wallet Related Fraud (3.45%): The popularity of e-wallets makes them a target for fraudsters, emphasizing the need for heightened security.

Fraud Call/Vishing (5.32%): Fraudulent calls and vishing remain a significant threat, requiring users to exercise caution when divulging personal information.

The FCRF's report also addresses the emergence of deepfake technology in cybercrimes, accounting for a modest 0.09% of total cybercrimes. Deepfake-related crimes, including sextortion and synthetic audio-video manipulation, exploit AI-generated content, blurring the lines between reality and fiction. Proactive measures are necessary to combat these synthetic threats and maintain digital trust.

The Imperative for Vigilance and Preparedness

In light of these cybercrime trends, India faces a complex landscape dominated by online frauds and financial crimes. Enhanced security measures, increased public awareness, and collaborative efforts among stakeholders are essential to mitigate these risks and build a secure digital future for the nation. The rise of UPI fraud and the emergence of deepfake-related crimes make it imperative for India to stay vigilant and prepared in the face of evolving cyber threats. India's digital landscape must adapt to this evolving threat landscape and work collectively to safeguard its citizens' digital assets and privacy.

I Want To Do Court Marriage; Who Can Help Me?

According to the Special Marriage Act of 1954, two people from different castes, religions, or nationalities can marry in the presence of a marriage officer and three witnesses in India. The marriage officer so mentioned is generally the Sub-Registrar appointed under the Act of 1954. The Marriage Officer solemnises the Court Marriage between the bride and the bridegroom as per the Act when following conditions are fulfilled by the interested parties-

Those applying for a court marriage must not have a living spouse.

The bride and the groom-

Must be capable of giving valid consent to the marriage and shall not be of unsound mind.

Even if the parties are capable of giving their valid consent, they should not be suffering from a mental disorder of such kind which makes them unfit for marriage or procreation.

Don't suffer from recurrent attacks of insanity.

The age of the bride must be 18 years old or above and the age of the groom must be 21 years old or above.

Participants in the marriage must not be participating in any of the restricted partnerships.

Documents necessary to apply for Court Marriage-

Date of Birth of the parties

Documentary proof related to the marital status of the parties, i.e., if they are unmarried, divorced, or widowed

The notice is required to be given to the marriage officer under whose area of jurisdiction any on of the parties to the court marriage in Lucknow has been staying for at least 30 days

Publication of the Notice- The Marriage Officer will then publish the notice for the intended marriage by having it affixed in a conspicuous place in the office of the Marriage Officer.

Objection to the marriage- an objection to the marriage application could be raised within a period of 30 days of publication of the notice of the intended marriage. Such objections to the marriage can be submitted to the marriage officer on the grounds that have been provided under the Act. In such a scenario, the marriage officer would inquire about the objection filed within 30 days from the date of receiving the objection. If the objection is found to be invalid by the marriage officer, he will solemnize the marriage on the prescribed date.

Declaration by the parties- if no objection has been raised against the marriage application or if an objection which was raised was found to be invalid by the marriage officer, the parties will have to appear before the marriage officer submitting their declaration as has been prescribed in the Third Schedule of the Act.

Later, a marriage certificate will be issued by the marriage officer, which is conclusive evidence of the marriage.
