Ash & Self-Sacrifice (S1E4)
One thing that turns up again and again (and again, and again, and again) in the Pokemon series, at least to me, is how Ash constantly puts his Pokemon before himself.
Tumblr media
We see this from the very start of his journey, when he attempts to save Pikachu from the Spearow that have been chasing them. He does this by telling Pikachu to hide inside its Poke Ball, while he himself attempts to face off against the flock.
Tumblr media
It's clear that Ash is putting himself in danger with this action; the potential consequences are not clearly defined, but would probably involve at the very least a lot of injuries.
Ash is saved by Pikachu, rather than doing the saving, when Pikachu sees Ash's courage and leaps to summon an electric attack and send the Spearow packing.
This all happens in the very first episode, and it's a really striking character illustration, as well as character-building, establishing what will be a lifetime bond between these two.
Ash is shown to have great courage, determination, and a disregard for personal safety when it comes to a Pokemon that is relying on him.
I find this to be an exceptionally admirable trait in a character, and one that the show remains consistent in.
Tumblr media
This dedication to his Pokemon, and learning how best to look out for what they need, continues throughout the next several episodes. We can see that Ash is inexperienced in the fourth episode, when his Metapod gets kidnapped by a Beedrill.
Tumblr media
Ash reflects on the experience, and comes to view it as his failure to look out for and protect his Pokemon. This seems to reinforce earlier ideas he's shown in earlier episodes, doubling down on himself as the protector of his Pokemon
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The show also doubles down on having his Pokemon respond to his convictions with equal commitment to look out for their trainer, as in the very next scene, Metapod throws itself in front of a Beedrill that was attacking Ash, taking a grievous injury. (Not to worry, it uses this battle to evolve into Butterfree, working even harder to protect Ash)
Tumblr media
I admire this characteristic of Ash's, to treat the care and responsibility for his Pokemon so seriously. The show seems to really emphasize this as character growth of his, and it makes me adore him more as a character, especially because this will not be the last time he commits himself to this ideal. ((*see: Ash throwing himself between Squirtle and a bomb (S1E12; Ash running into an on-fire building (S1E26); and nearly throwing himself off a cliff to grab Pikachu (S2E23) among many others.))
It is, however, also something that I see as a character flaw of his, in equal measure, for many of the exact same reasons.
I think he does amazing things for his Pokemon, and I think it makes him an amazing trainer. And, also, I think he undervalues himself often. He is determined, but often takes even perceived failures to heart, even when the actions he took had no positive or negative morality attached.
He beats himself up for failing to protect his Pokemon, yet would never for a moment let one of his Pokemon think less of themselves for failing to protect him.
He shoulders a heavy burden, and often seems determined to carry it alone. It makes me feel so much sympathy for Ash, and makes me relate to him and love him more for it.
Tumblr media
I have a lot more to say about the ways in which Ash sacrifices himself, but it will have to wait for a future post.

Randomly unlocked a core memory while I was at work and I can't stop thinking about it
When I was 11-12, I watched Mewtwo Strikes Back for the first time
I had watched other Pokemon movies already, but accidentally skipped over the very first one; loved Pokemon 2k at the time and enjoyed MSB just as much, but with an added bonus of brainstorming a crazy what if idea after I finished watching it
Around that time, I was also avidly watching DBZ Kai; and just so happened to watch MSB not very long after seeing Super Saiyan for the first time
So kid me came up with the idea of "What if instead of losing the will to fight after Ash gets turned to stone, Pikachu just fucking snaps?"
Memory is a bit hazy after that because I was too busy hyping myself up after remembering it, but having the knowledge I have now I think I have the perfect vision that kid me would be proud of-
So imagine this: Once Ash is petrified, Pikachu approaches him and cries as he tries to revive him like normal, then as Pikachu's tears are hitting the ground, lightning strikes around the area, striking more frequently and barely missing people and pokemon alike Once Pikachu turns to face Mewtwo, he looks pissed, tears still streaming down his face; Pikachu then shouts at the top of his lungs as a giant lightning bolt strikes him from the sky, a call back to the ending of S1E1 where he saves Ash from a flock of Spearow When the dust of the lightning strike clears, Pikachu is looking pretty different, having grown fangs and horns, his fur frizzed out and now colored a dark saturated red-orange and white, even his own electricity changed to be red instead of yellow Pikachu hasn't technically evolved, these changes are fleeting as evident by how he looks to be flickering between this new look and his normal self at first, but he plans to fight as much as he can while he can maintain that state
Basically what I'm describing is Pikachu almost becoming Gorochu, I always imagined Gorochu being part dark type too, so that'd be a big part of how he'd be giving Mewtwo a run for their money
Hell, I even thought about Gorochu being implemented as the final evolution of a regional variant Pichu/Pikachu evolution line where Pichu stays as a pure electric type, then gains dark after evolving into Pikachu
As far as abilities go for this line, they'd still have Static as their first ability and Lightning Rod as their hidden ability, but as for a secondary ability for Pichu and Pikachu, I feel like they could make good use out of Reckless especially if they use Volt Tackle, but for Gorochu, Reckless gets replaced by Sheer Force
I like to think Gorochu would get a signature move too in the form of what I'm calling Vengeance Bolt; it's a special electric type move with 65 base power with a chance to paralyze, and its power boosts based on how many teammates have fainted, gaining 15 more power per fainted ally, pair that with Sheer Force and it'll shred through most foes when it needs to most-- and I think it'd go so hard if this move referenced Goku's angry Kamehameha; Gorochu charging up all that electricity into their arm, the color of that electricity changing from yellow to deep red and blasting the opponent with it
Okay, crazy concept hyperfixation ramble over, but holy fuck I'd love to see Gorochu become real some day

Woke up at 8am today because I had a secret tattoo appointment that I didn't tell Ed about because I was going to surprise him with a tattoo on my wrist, I guess.
Ended up taking an Uber because I was already late for our 10am appointment. I met Jego and he was pretty chill. He charged me just 50£ for this cute Pokeball tattoo! It wasn't that bad, the feeling. It was just mildly weird and uncomfortable. 2/10 pain, if you ask me. I'm very satisfied with how it went. I couldn't be any happier that the first tattoo I got was a pixelated Pokeball. If there was anything that's constant in my life, it's Pokemon. I think I was in second grade when I started playing and I haven't stopped ever since so it's only right that I inked myself that first.
On my way home I bought a samosa and a canned coffee drink in Osterley Station and took two tubes to get home. It was so cold this day and I think I was a bit underdressed. Got home and Ed cooked some chicken estopado and it was delicious. The saba is such a nice touch.
Watched Greys Anatomy S1E1-S2E6 and I slept at 3am in the morning. This is such a cool show. I missed out on this. Today was a good day.

Sometimes I just can't understand how some people are oblivious to the queerness of Hannibal, like, they are flirting all the time, they were not just besties or enemies or a mix of both, they were creating this weird, intricate love story full of blood, betrayal, tears, murder and cannibalism (and aesthetically pleasing crime scenes).
Since s1e1, and the "I don't like eye contact", and then throughout the show proceeded to make eye contact on multiple occasions even when one of them had their hands inside another person.
And their final lines being "See, this is all I ever wanted...for both of us.", "its beautiful" ????
You can't be that stupid.

Centaurworld Rewrite: A Serious Adventure AU - S1E1 Outline
I’m doing rewrite outlines, prepare for some AU. That being said, I still like several parts of Centaurworld a lot, namely Rider, Horse, Wammawink, and whatever the hell is going on with the Nowhere King, and hope there’s a second season to watch (which I will if Netflix doesn’t ruin our hopes and dreams).
Anyways, here’s like, a rewrite or whatever. I will probably post the outlines as I go, episode by episode. Will I get to them all? ADHD-willing, we’ll see. Also feel free to use these ideas/outlines? I don’t mind.
Also assume there are songs in this even if I don’t specifically mention all of them. Also I guess this rewrite kinda chains the 1st and 2nd episodes together as a two parter? Maybe, idk.
Also I’ll preface this with this too: I ship Wammahorse, yes I SHIPSHIP it. Moving on.
Some headcanons before we start:
Warworld (*the world Rider and Horse are from) is a Low Fantasy Setting, there IS magic, but it comes in two variations, either very subtle low-powered but relatively uncommon, or Terrifyingly Powerful and so extremely rare to the point that it’s not very well known and “just myths” (usually for Big Baddies)
Ideas for Horse’s Degree of Sapience Prior to Worldhopping:
A: Horse was just a regular, non-magical horse, and their exposure to the Artifact and Centaurworld has essentially made them a Fully Uplifted Animal. - This is interesting, but ultimately a difficult idea to convey because it would require a lot more setup and wouldn’t exactly fit Horse’s characterization without some rework. This is an amazing idea, but I won’t be using it because it would slow things down too much.
B: Horse is a low-fantasy magic steed raised as warhorse/war asset, who is much smarter than your average animal steed/companion similar to a DND Ranger’s pets, or Mabari from Dragon Age, or a Ranger Horse from John Flanagan’s ‘Ranger’s Apprentice.’ The combined exposure to the Artifact and Centaurworld could account for her gaining speech and her body expressing limited physical adaptation to Centaurworld’s different physics (her body’s new extended range of motion for example) but of course I’ll be limiting this because having stakes make it more fun imho. This is my favorite, I’m using this.
Horse would’ve been considered a very valuable war asset (trained warhorses are like, historical ferraris, expensive as hell, i can only imagine what low-magical smart warhorses would be valued at), though still ultimately expendable for the war effort like anything else
Let Horse have horse behaviors (*can you tell I haven’t really left my horse phase behind lol)! Nipping and grooming behaviors as affection or warnings, ear positions to indicate mood, grazing to eat, laying down only when truly relaxed, sleeping standing up. COME ON.
Centaurworld is a High Fantasy world with an Absurdist bent but with darker undertones, similar to how Adventure Time is, with an extremely high saturation of magic, maybe you could even theorize that due to the Splitting of the Two Worlds that all the magic is being Dammed up in Centaurworld like a river or reservoir, this could be a future plot thread that could be picked up in a later season.
Basic Changes:
Durpleton, Glendale, Ched and Zulius are supporting cast, not main
Durpleton is less stupid and more of a Kronk-expy: a little dim but ultimately kind/means well, has at least 1 life skill he’s good at buried in there though for the life of me I can’t think of one right now.
Glendale’s Narrative Framing: Glendale is amazing, but the kleptomania will be allotted ONE (or two) joke mentions but narratively isn’t treated like one after, somehow establish that her kleptomania is directly intertwined with her anxiety levels. Are there other denizens of the Valley that know the Herd? Are they mad at Glendale for stealing things? Does Wammawink have to constantly run interference to cover for Glendale? Probably.
Make Ched look like less of a pointless asshole: Have him show concern for his friends’ safety and his suspicion of outsiders, AKA Horse. If he’s going to be a jerk, at least let it serve a purpose.
Zulius can stay roughly the same - Zulius is great okay, just don’t tell me there’s backstory and then NOT TELL OR SHOW US ANY CLUES about what said backstory/history IS! (other than forcing us infer/project the headcanon[?] that him and Splendib might’ve been exes, from how they act around each other without any other context/visual/or confirming exposition we literally know nothing other than Splendib and him split/had a nasty falling out and Splendib took the glittercats and the career in the divorce.)
S1E1: Hello Rainbow Road
Opening scene in Warworld
If these episodes were allowed to be longer (shuddup it’s my AU), have the scene open with Horse sees Rider comes running out of some underground castle ruin catacombs and ominous roaring and clanging behind her as she deliberately sets off a dungeon booby trap (arrows or fire) she must’ve avoided while dungeon crawling earlier, and Horse runs towards her and circles at a canter and then Rider does a Running Mount (mounting a horse while the horse is in motion) and shoots an arrow at that flies offscreen
Smash cut to the DRAWBRIDGE door falling and Rider and Horse come galloping out while dodging some javelins and arrows and 1.5 seconds later 1-4 armored minotaurs (the lizardmen?) riding some coursers (swift horses or horselike creatures idk have fun) gallop behind in hot pursuit.
WARWORLD CHASE/FIGHT SCENE
Rider and Horse take out 2 of the pursuers on the run have Rider stay on horseback, dodge and make 1 pursuer shoot/javelin another 1 into a nasty-looking fall, and then Rider nails another 1 right through the helmet visor with an arrow. Have Rider throw a smoke bomb or something at the 2 remaining ones trying to catch up.
2 Enemies left but Horse is forced to skid to a stop as the suspension bridge approaches, then a tense moment forced to walk in order to escape safely across the suspension bridge which Rider cuts once they’re across. Maybe have 1 of the minotaur pursuers having been on the bridge somewhat behind them before Rider had to cut the line, sending the enemy hurtling down below. The remaining minotaur scout stares at them ominously from the other side before leaving.
Have Rider breath a sigh of relief
Smash cut to Horse and Rider traveling across a wartorn landscape, start Horse’s internal monologue narrative until they finally get to the hill and see the ruins of their village
Everything from this point to Horse getting transported to Centaurworld is the same as canon
Not Actually a DREAMVISION SEQUENCE:
Shot/Animated from Horse’s 1st Person POV: Darkness, the sound of whooshing Horse falls, shimmering flash colors [if this were an actual show pls put a Epilepsy warning at the beginning of the ep], then a loud Splash as Horse falls into Dark Water. POV looks down and we see Horse’s front legs and a bottomless abyss below and a then flash of green and off-white from deep below, then look up to see blue light, see the swimming motions of Horse’s front legs and getting closer to the Blue Light
Horse wakes up, blinking, alone (no Durpleton)
Horse gets up looks around, doesn’t see Rider anywhere and starts makes Whinnying sounds (specifically, Whinnying is a social horse call, like specifically going, “Rider where are you!?” in IRL horse)
“And what are you supposed to be?” the “camera” wheels around to see Ched who has landed on Horse just within reach of her tail so Horse lets out a startled squeal (the Horse noise, not the human one) and does that thing where horses use their tails to swat away insects which sends Ched FLYING as Horse’s squealing morphs into her Talking/Yelling “what the heck is going on?!”
Horse does what panicked horses do, she runs
Horse stumbles into meeting Durpleton, who freaks her out more
Meeting kinda the same as canon but with less constant emphasis on reminding the audience that the writer’s can’t write comedy
Wammawink and Horse meet, Ched flies in and goes “hey that asshole kicked my a-I mean attacked me, but I totally beat ‘em.”
Horse tries to leave, discovers the Barrier, tries to get through, fails multiple times, but only 3-4 attempts shown with time passage show by the time of day changing, have Horse’ talking to herself a bit about how utterly weird the talking words thing is, that this is a “human” thing why is this HAPPENING she needs to get back
Waste less time on the visual gags of the Barrier repelling Horse, also get rid of the Tree Catapult scene because it doesn’t jive with Horse being a horse, why do they know how to make a catapult? Also because I hate how it basically shows us that Horse has no physical danger or chance of injury from being FLUNG around like Pokemon’s Team Rocket.
Have the rest of the centaur Herd come up to and talk to Horse while Horse is trying to get through the Barrier, and Horse talks about the outside and her world and doing things, squeeze in some convo about how there’s no (current) war in Centaurworld and how Horse thinks that that “freedom must be nice.” Anyways these conversations are what has Glendale, Zulius and Durpleton at least considering the ups of leaving.
Durpleton: Durpleton approaches Horse alone and asks about where she’s from, what’s home like, expositiony bits for Warworld and how much Horse needs to get herself and the Artifact back to Rider; Horse should say something offhand, like how she dreamed about exploring the world with Rider after the War seeing new things together, to which we’d cut to a shot of Durpleton looking thoughtful, before asking a completely unrelated question before Horse asks to be left alone. He doesn’t go originally, but gets distracted by something (butterfly?) and trots off.
Wammawink, Ched & Glendale: Atop a hill, Wammawink looks up to see stormclouds gathering off in the distance and comments that they’re going to be in for some rough weather, then goes over to offer Horse food, but gets distracted by some other Valley Denizens who are mad suspicious that Glendale is responsible for something of theirs that’s missing. Leaving Wammawink to go off and have to run interference leaving Glendale to approach Horse alone. Horse will learn that there’s no (current) war in Centaurworld but there was one historically, and Glendale will offhandedly mention that they’ve stolen everything from everyone in the Valley at least 4 times and with the unspoken implication of boredom. Ched will butt in and heckle Horse like, “could you leave any quieter?” and Horse sniping back, ears pinned back and animated horse stress behaviors. And Horse’s last failed attempt at passing the Barrier has them drop the Artifact, and we get a shot of Glendale spotting and eyes widening at seeing the Artifact unattended on the ground, then we get a smash cut of Glendale getting herded away by Ched.
Zulius: Goes over to ask about Horse’s avante garde accessories (her bridle, saddle & armor[barding]), makes comments on her style/aesthetic and asks where he could find some. Horse loses her patience, and says that she Needs to concentrate on getting back to someone they care a lot about and could you please just go away?
Horse: (voiced as a rhetorical question) “Haven’t you ever wanted to go back to someone you loved before?”
Zulius gets a Look on his face, then he’d puff up, cover up the Armor Piercing Question’s effect on him with more bluster and then turn away as it gets later
Around sunset, Horse finally gives in to go ask Wammawink what’s up, and how can they leave.
Wammawink tries to feed them and convince them to stay, but Horse waves her off and moves away while muttering something about coming up with a plan
Speaking of plans, the Herd excluding Wammawink (& Ched) start talking about being bored, and mention Horse saying stuff about exploring the world (taken out of context, deliberately)
Wammawink, smelling the ugly head of discontent, sighs in defeat at not being able to recruit this new outcast in the Herd and approaches a grazing Horse and says she’ll help her through it with her magic(not admitting that the Barrier is her magic working in the first place because it’s not relevant right now okay) but then we get the “What’s magic?” bit from Horse and the rest of the Herd butts in with the Song. They wander off to go to bed afterwards, and Horse wants to go Now but Wammawink says that she’ll help Horse leave the Barrier but only in the morning because “you look tired”
Horse: “That doesn’t matter.” *awkward silence*
Wammawink, sadly: “Of course it does.” *Horse has already walked away*
The sun finishes setting as the wind blows the plants and through Wammawink’s fur (ominously) and she shivers, going back to the campfire
DREAM SEQUENCE: It’s dark, then we get a flashback dream of a younger Rider and Horse, idk a memory of something to showcase them either while in training or really show their Bond okay? End with them sitting around a campfire with other young soldiers and horses, someone is humming something (the first few bars of the Nowhere King’s Lullaby, no actual words yet). Then Dream!Rider turns to face Horse and asks, “how could you?”
Horse: “How could I what?”
Dream!Rider: “How could you leave me behind?” (The humming grows louder, there’s a lute being played, growing discordant)
Then Horse starts calling into the darkness/void, “I’m coming back for you, Rider! Just hang on, alright?!”
Rider: “Oh Horse, it’s already too late for me.”
“Rider!” Horse yells as they jolt awake, standing, because horses typically sleep standing up.
It’s dawn but the wind and stormy weather signs are picking up but not here yet, Wammawink walks Horse to the edge of the Valley barrier and tries to convince Horse to stay here where it’s safe, but Horse refuses to be deterred
Brief shot of Glendale hiding a bunch of things from her Tummy Hammerspace in order to simulate the feeling of stealing things again later, including the Artifact which falls on the ground
A shot of Durpleton seeing and picking up the Artifact and spotting Wammawink and Horse some distance away going toward the barrier’s edge
Wammawink hangs back on a hill, glowy hands and the magic wall flickers and disappears, and Horse immediately breaks into a gallop and disappears into the forest, Wammawink sighs and turns away
Indeterminate amount of time later, Wammawink recasts the Barrier, and Durpleton misses breakfast so Wammawink enlists Ched to help her look for him because Ched can fly
Cut to a shot of Horse dropping from a canter to a trot on the Rainbow Road, it’s grown darker and the stormclouds are in the sky. Distant thunder booms overhead, and a few scattered raindrops start to fall
“Heyyyy! You forgot your necklaceeee!” a shout from behind
Horse looks back and sees a running Durpleton holding the Artifact, and stops, he catches up to Horse and is gasping, “Wow, you run fast, hoooo, *deep breaths* you’re really *another gasp* athletic! Anyways you forgot your Necklace.”
Durpleton ties the broken string into a necklace around Horse’s neck and Horse thanks them and wishes them a safe journey back to the Valley, but as this happens the rain gradually falls harder. Then the sounds of the Rest of the Herd finally catching up happen, and Wammawink mother hens Durpleton and wants take everyone back home but then a loud BOOM of thunder and lightning overhead, and then it starts to Pour down rain, forcing Horse and co to find shelter until it lets up. Maybe have someone mention something about landslides being a possibility? Durpleton asks how they found them so fast, dim remember, then brief flashback.
FLASHBACK: Wammawink and co searching and calling out for Durpleton everywhere in the Valley, and realize that he must’ve followed Horse for some reason when Zulius FINALLY shows up and mentions that he remembers Durpleton saying he was gonna give Horse back her necklace. The recast Barrier is brought down and they leave the Valley to bring back their friend.
Back to the present where the group has taken shelter as the storm picks up more, and thunder booms overhead, Horse has some nervous horse body language going on, then we get to hear her mutter-singing or humming the “I never fear the drums of war” to calm herself down, but with more stanzas please, when asked she says it’s a battle hymn that Rider sang.
If Horse was humming, Wammawink could ask why she doesn’t sing, she’s sure that Horse has a lovely voice
Horse goes “I’m a horse, I don’t sing.”
Wammawink tries to be encouraging, Horse is resistant
Wammawink invites her to eat (AGAIN) but Horse still turns her (love and affection) down (AGAIN!) and says she’s fine with grazing and Glendale pipes in excitedly that they have decided that they want to travel with Horse (Ched pipes up that he didn’t agree to this) but pls help us convince Wammawink and Horse protests but someone points out to ask “do you even know where you’re going” and they have a point
Horse acknowledges this and relents, states some stuff about how she’s not going to slow down much however. Then Glendale, Zulius and Durpleton rejoice, Ched acts tsundere, but Wammawink looks nervous and wrings her hands together and relents that “they’ll go with Horse as far as the nearest Shaman” and Ched will go, “hey don’t you know he-” and Wammawink shushes him quickly with a gigglecake
Wammawink doubles down on the mother henning behavior
Horse doesn’t eat Wammawink’s gigglecakes but grazes by herself nearby, occasionally answering a question or two when engaged by the others (not Wammawink) and Wammawink mentions how the weather probably won’t let up for very long and they should take it slow and that Horse should bundle up
Horse disagrees but its bedtime and a bedtime song occurs in the backdrop as a restless Horse struggles to stay alert and awake but eventually falls asleep
VISION SEQUENCE: A shimmer of soft blue light, then shots of Rider ducking and weaving, her sword flashing as she tries to weave her way through a horde of enemy soldiers, blood spatters, then an enemy archer takes aim at a fleeing Rider, and Horse calls out a warning.
Rider turns her head with a surprised look on her face suddenly just enough that the arrow buries itself into her shoulder instead the middle of her back and then she stumbles, one of her arms going limp, but everything goes dark before we can see if she fell
Everything goes dark and the din of war fades away, we get a shot of Horse’s hooves splashing and making ripples into dark water but the camera doesn’t follow her, we hear Horse’s cries for Rider fade, growing further and further away
Still dark, but in the silence we hear distant sound, drip, drip, drip, drip.
Then the episode ends and the credits roll.

Ash Ketchum at the Start
Ash Ketchum is a 10 year old from Pallet Town, the fourth trainer of four to leave Pallet at the time he would receive his first Pokemon.
He's portrayed from the start as very passionate about Pokemon, and there's little to deny about that. He oversleeps on his very first day, because he stayed up late, so excited to receive his first partner Pokemon.
I'd argue that in the very first episode, Ash learns a lot of extremely valuable lessons that shape the way that he interacts with Pokemon all the way through the show.
He has a lot of preconceived ideas that are quickly dashed, the first of these being that the first partner Pokemon are Charmander, Bulbasaur, and Squirtle. However, when those are taken, Ash gets Pikachu!
Tumblr media
This is actually the inciting element that leads to Ash being the way he is. Typically, Pokemon given to starting trainers by Pokemon professors have been born, bred, and trained to be ready to be a trainer's beginning Pokemon. That's why they are considered perfect fits! They are already trained.
But Pikachu appears to still be wild, not yet trained to listen to commands or respect the will of it's trainer. I'm sure this is something a lot of trainers learn in their journey, but a big theme of the show is that Pokemon don't just naturally listen, even if you capture them! There has to be an element of respect involved.
Ash doesn't inherently know how to earn Pikachu's respect. He sets off on his journey literally dragging Pikachu along, because Pikachu won't get in the Poke Ball, and continues to shock him if he tries to force Pikachu to do anything it doesn't want to.
Tumblr media
But I think the show, even here, takes the time to set the stage for Ash's inherent respect for Pokemon; he realizes all too quickly that this isn't a good long-term solution, and decides to simply ask Pikachu what's the matter, and if it will get in the Poke Ball; he even tries to quote his Pokedex, to prove that "Pokemon travel in Poke Balls."
But Pikachu is quick to point him to the expanded information, that indicates that not all Pokemon like traveling in the Poke Ball! And when Ash learns this, he doesn't try to force Pikachu anymore.
In trying to handle being a Pokemon trainer on his own, though, when Pikachu declines to help, Ash stirs up a heap of trouble in the form of a flock of Spearow
Tumblr media
He and Pikachu make a run for it, but eventually find themselves pinned, with no more chance of running away.
So Ash, on his very first day out as a Pokemon trainer, with a Pokemon that has so far not been shown to like or respect him in the least, throws himself between the Spearow and Pikachu (the main target of the Spearow's attacks).
To protect Pikachu, he places Pikachu's poke ball beside Pikachu, and urges Pikachu to get inside for its own protection, since it is already too beat up to continue fighting, and he promises that he will fight off the Spearow for them.
Tumblr media
Even in this moment of peril, where it is implied that Pikachu's life could be in danger (though it's a kids' show, so they never state as much directly), Ash still does not force Pikachu into this decision! He knows and even verbally recognizes that getting in the Poke Ball is difficult for Pikachu, but urges that it is the safest thing to do. From a story perspective, this makes sense, because of the following action, but within the story this is something that I adore! Ash is listening to and respecting his Pokemon, while also trying to protect them!
It is this selflessness (for a Pokemon that he barely knows at this point!) that causes Pikachu to leap to the rescue, summoning a huge lightning bolt to defeat all of the Spearow, though it uses all of its remaining strength to do so.
This is the selflessness that we are going to continue see Ash using throughout the rest of the series! I think something stuck with him from this early experience, realizing that he is the caretaker of the Pokemon in his charge, and extending that even to Pokemon he does not own! He can and will put himself in harm's way if it's to protect those he loves and cares about, without a moment's hesitation.
And it is this self-sacrifice that the Pokemon around him see, and reciprocate (most of the time), and why Ash's own Pokemon give it their all; because they know for an absolute fact that Ash will do the same for them!
We've gotten just to the end of Season 1, Episode 1, and we already have a portrait of a kid that believes in doing the right thing, and isn't afraid to throw himself into doing it.
Ash Ketchum absolutely shaped my view of the world as a child, and while there's plenty of character flaws associated with this worldview too, the strengths that it gives you are awesome as well.

Hey so remember that time that I was like “so I’m gonna come up with pokemon for some major Voltron characters, but I’m gonna limit it to two each because what kinda maniac would do full teams for 12+ characters”?
Me. I am that kinda maniac.
Team Voltron in this post- Sincline plus Haggar and Zarkon later.
Lance Milotic [s] * Primarina * Gyarados * Swampert * Octillery * Lapras
Lance ended up with the single most evenly-typed team out of everybody I put here. The shiny Milotic is his signature pokemon but overall I can see Lance spending a lot of time with his team, both talking to them and grooming them. (if there’s anybody on the team I can see doing really well in contests, it’d be Lance)
Milotic and Gyarados are natural choices given the implication, as I’ve discussed before, that Lance is only a few steps behind Keith while not being a prodigy, and thus, a hard worker- so him getting pokemon that are regarded as pathetic, looked-down-upon initial evolutions, and refusing to give up on them no matter what, and reaping the rewards with a show-stopping team.
Primarina arguably fits in for the same reasons (I remember when Sun/Moon started coming out, everybody dunked on Popplio) but with its final evolution being a ~beautiful mermaid~ there’s also no way Lance wouldn’t roll for that.
Octillery is a nod to Lance’s own brilliant marskmanship as well as being stated to be a calm pokemon that enjoys being fussed over, and Lapras are stated to sing to find each other, good for the empathetic connector that Lance is as a person. The swampert is both an effective canceler of electrical attacks (as Lance is pretty dang adaptable all things considered) and a nod to his connection with Hunk, the Earth paladin.
Keith Charizard (Y mega evolution) * Absol * Talonflame * Aegislash * Minior * Arcanine
I feel like Keith’s team, outside of the obvious fire motif, would be more ranger-like than focused on battling; the feeling from his house in s1e1 and the way he so clearly enjoys both the hoverbike and the outdoors strikes me as someone who would take very well to having a team that can let him tear across an open expanse or soar through the air. Either way, gotta have room to roam- his team has some rather large members.
I imagine Keith’s not a very earnest trainer. Most of his team came to him rather than him seeking them out, and they have funny personal stories behind almost all of them. The only exception is Charizard, who he got as a starter Charmander and who stuck with him the entire time he was shuffling around the foster system.
Aegislash are stated to be servants of those it believes possess a ‘kingly spirit’ and that one in particular doesn’t always listen to Keith, though it does sure seem interested in his welfare- it just sometimes disagrees with him on what that looks like. He’s never known it as a Honedge or Doublade- and it’s been around as long as he can remember. Perhaps someone asked it to look after him? It certainly nannies him an awful lot.
The arcanine he found as a growlithe hiding under a car, but it didn’t evolve until Garrison. Conversely the talonflame evolved really quickly; it was another adopted one (he found it after it hit a window and was able to nurse it back to health) I can see him using the talonflame more for exploration than for fighting.
Absol was a present from Shiro who thought they were similar-minded and could get along. (C’mon it’s a moody, well-intentioned prophet pokemon with flippy hair. I couldn’t not give one to Keith) It’s a little troubled but so’s he, so, they work.
Keith has no idea what’s up with the Minior. It latched onto him during his year in the desert and refused to leave him. He kinda thinks of it as a kindred spirit since they’re said to come from space and he feels pretty lost himself. (Kiddo you have no idea.)
Shiro Lucario * Skarmory * Mightyena * Umbreon * Scizor * Dusknoir
Veteran trainer who runs a tight ship, though not to his team’s detriment. A mix of dark and steel types, mostly, suitable for the tough-as-nails Black Paladin whose fighting style definitely has some shades of “brutally efficient”. As much as Shiro is an honorable and empathetic type, when it comes to life-or-death situations he goes for the throat big time.
Thanks to his leadership, coordination and focus, they all made it through the missing year a bit beat up, a bit scarred, and pretty stressed- in particular his eevee didn’t exactly... plan to end up in that evolution but it had to evolve in the sunless sterile environment of the arena.
Lucario is really nearly Shiro as a pokemon and I can see him sharing a very strong bond with it- the natural sense of justice, keen personal focus and that, for all of its strong instincts and wills, it’s a pack hunter that focuses on the idea of the group.
Skarmory is a pokemon said to refine its edge through experiencing hardship, battering its steel wings until it eventually regrows them and sharpens their cutting edge. Scizor fits in under that umbrella as well, since it’s another steel type and one that has to use its wings to thermoregulate, creating the image of an entity under pressure that has to regulate itself carefully. I sort of imagine during the missing year they spent a lot of time tanking for Shiro himself and for the rest of the team, and came out the most battered as a result.
Mightyena is another socially-motivated pack hunter, which, given it’s a dark type and thus allegedly ‘evil’ would implicitly strike a balance between honorable and pragmatic, which is very significant to Shiro.
Dusknoir’s a good sport, helpful and obliging, but Shiro sorta gets the creeps around it since he went into the missing year with only five pokemon (having given Keith his absol) and has absolutely no memory of when or where this one showed up and given its whole guide of the dead thing he sometimes wonders if it’s actually here for him in the not necessarily supportive sense of the term.
Hunk Donphan * Aggron * Bastiodon * Claydol * Golurk * Chansey
The donphan is his signature pokemon and primary companion- which matches his mentality basically perfectly as a relative slow mover that becomes virtually unstoppable once set on a single goal.
Hunk’s team pretty much embodies the dual nature of a compassionate protector of others with someone who will through-and-through mess you up if you tick him off or hurt his friends. You’d better believe that chansey is ready to throw down at any time of day.
Aggron nicely embodies both with its propensity to restore and maintain its territory but also being a metal dinosaur that will protect that territory viciously.
Claydol and Golurk are more testaments to his curiosity and interest in technology. Hunk was the only one I gave a fossil pokemon, with the idea being he’s the sort of person who’d take the time to carefully nurse a revived prehistoric creature back to health. In general, I think Hunk’s team would be in good shape, like, he’s the type who just really enjoys taking care of them. He never officially signed up for the league (hence his lack of a starter) but just sorta accumulated pokemon that he made friends with.
In his defense most of these guys were a lot smaller when he started out and sometimes his donphan forgets that it’s not the size of a lapdog anymore.
Pidge Rotom * Phantump * Porygon * Minun * Beldum * Cleffa
With only a single grass type, Pidge has the weakest connection to her element, but that much really makes sense- of the team she’s probably the most distant from understanding herself. Her team is all first evolutions as well- she’s got a lot of growing to do.
The rotom is both her signature and virtually never battles, usually hiding out in her laptop. They’re her best friend and avid confidant and she doesn’t like to have them occupy something they can’t talk to her through. (You bet your ass she has a Rotomdex. she built it herself)
Minun and Cleffa were gifts from her brother and her father respectively- Matt has a corresponding Plusle, and Cleffa because someone like Sam Holt who dedicated his life work to finding extraterrestrial life would be charmed by pokemon like the clefairy line that is rumored to have come from outer space. Pidge didn’t have much interest in the ‘conventional’ pokemon league and I imagine she only caught a few of her pokemon personally- most were from her family. Her mom got her Porygon partially in honor of her love of old-school graphics.
Beldum she caught all on her own! It was difficult- she killed an entire holiday- but she’s gonna have a metagross. As. soon as she can figure out how to encourage it to evolve. So far it’s not buying anything. Sometimes her Rotom has to chase it away from her laptop so it doesn’t try to dismantle her equipment. She has successfully trained it to fetch wrenches though.
Phantump is a new addition after her dad and brother went missing- they’re the spirits of lost children and while Pidge didn’t get lost as much as Sam and Matt did, I think that sense of being forlorn and isolated would lead her to quickly connect with a creature that felt the same way. By the time half of these babies grow up she’s gonna be pretty terrifying.
Allura Diancie * Audino * Florges * Altaria * Mawile * Espeon
Diancie’s basically a given. Of course Allura has a legendary, of course it’s the pink princess coming into her own, of course Allura’s team is mostly fairy types. Have you seen Mega Diancie? Tell me that’s not an Allura look.
Audino is a healer, Florges is a pokemon that explicitly makes gardens for royalty, and Altaria being a dragon bird basically is the embodiment of “beauty and grace and about to destroy your face.”
Mawile is also a nice testament to Allura’s toughness and strength of spirit, while Espeon is more a nice allusion to her strength of mind- also putting her as a counterpart to Shiro as the two leaders of the paladins. A very beautiful team, and a very competent one.
Given Allura’s sentimental nature, I can see most of her pokemon being old childhood playmates, even Diancie- her apparent love of the outdoors and Altea’s climate would both imply that it wouldn’t be hard to run into powerful pokemon. So her team has a very strong emotional bond and are able to trust each other implicitly.
Originally I was going to give Allura Xerneas and Haggar Yveltal, but I thought that Diancie was a better fit for Allura, and while she’s OP, she’s not that OP, at least- not that consistently so the idea is they’re more entities that the two can call upon in times of need.
Coran Stoutland * Drampa * Probopass * Alakazam * Walrein * Carbink
Yes, I know what you’re thinking, and yes, yes I did.
That said Coran’s team is anything but a joke- he can and will cheerfully destroy you if you’re unprepared. His whole team is docile as sheep outside of combat, though- Allura has a lot of fond memories hanging out with that Drampa.
Others (the Alakazam, Walrein, and Probopass) are a little lazier but still certainly friendly.
The carbink pretty much had to be there as soon as I looked at the relationship the carbink advisers are said to have with Diancie in the movie-verse since it’s basically the relationship between Coran and Allura just with pokemon. I sort of like the idea that in-universe working with Diancie and the carbinks is just a very standard affair for the Altean royal family- as diplomats they formed alliances with the pokemon in their environment before moving into space.
His signature pokemon is the Stoutland, through and through- a long-lived wise pokemon cited as a protector of others and a creature that will go through great toil to protect others. Also it’s such a stodgy, respectable-feeling thing, you can just imagine it patiently trotting along beside Coran on his way around the castle.

2019: Songs Stuck in My Head
All throughout 2019 I did something random and fun; I kept a journal of all the songs that got suck in my head. Sometimes whenever I hear a catchy tune it will stay in my head for a few days. That happens to me quite a bit, so this past year whenever I noticed that some music had stayed with me for more than two days I wrote it down. I play music, I analyze music, and I only watch any tv show or movie if it has good music in it. Here is the list of what was in my head in 2019. Don’t judge me.😆 I don’t discriminate by genre. I’ll watch anything that has good music in it, no matter if it’s for kids, for girls, or even if it’s unpopular. All of these can be found on YouTube or on music/TV streaming platforms.

I mean a fair number of sources I get (which granted is media and some Christians, but still) say divine entities take on a form pleasing to the viewer, and that two people looking at the same time may see different things, plus a lot use telepathy.
I see no reason not to. Hell, Akuryo Taisan is one spell that actually works as a low level, no edits needed exorcism chant or ofuda.
Not everyone works with tradition Helen, we evolve.
Magic works in ways not dependant on tradition; some people I ask say that prayers sent to Tsukuyomi, for example, can be read by Khonsu or whatever divinity is actually out there.
Tacky just means some people don't like it.
This might change based on said deity, for example possibly of friends of said divine being or anime variants, or possibly even ones whose elements fit (the explosion magician for a deity of fire maybe?)
They work just as well, most ritual items are for manipulating energy or attracting spirits. My energy sword works just as well as your boring old knife, Linda.
I don't see why the origin of the music matters. It's music. It's designed to invoke emotion. If anything that seems perfect for charging and promoting good atmosphere for summonings.
Recharging...is just relaxing and regathering energy...how it's done doesn't matter.
I don't see how sharing anime with spirits is a bad thing. My shikigami Amber likes Digimon like me, so we tend to sit back and watch it together on my phone.
"I see now that the circumstances of ones birth are irrelevant. It is what you do with the gift of life that matters." -Mewtwo, Pokemon the first movie.
"The early bird catches the worm. Or the Pokemon, in this case" -Professor Oak, Pokemon S1E1.
Even if you're late, there's still a chance of success. Even villains can care about others. These all came from Pokemon. Yea, media can be profound too.
Validity levels: OVER 9000!
POP CULTURE MAGICK POSITIVITY
Other paths get love, but Pop culture witches and Pagans need more love too! So I’m gonna spread it for all of you! Here’s to all the witches who;
Perceive their gods as they appear in the video games they play
Cast spells that are based on that really cool spell from their favourite cartoon
Are rejected by other witches for not drawing their magick from traditional means
Are criticized and accused of not employing “real magick”
Are told their magick is “tacky”
Keep anime figurines on their altars
Use tools that are employed by their favourite characters and repurpose them for magick
Enchant using music from video games
Recharge their witchy batteries by indulging in fanart
Use fandoms as a means of bonding with spirit guides, ancestors, and deities
Seek wisdom in profound pieces of media, rather than cryptic, oudated books or confusing meditations
You are valid, your path is creative, and let NOBODY tear your craft down for being “weird” or unorthodox!
