"PELEE ISLAND GIRL BURNED TO DEATH," Windsor Record. February 17, 1913. Page 1. --- Daughter of Caretaker Placed Crude Oil in Furnace and Explosion Ignited Her Clothing. ---- Leamington, Feb. 17.-An explosion of crude oil in the furnace of a southside Pelee Island schoolhouse caused the death of a daughter of Hooper Thomas, who acted as caretaker of the school. She fixed the wood in the furnace ready for lighting the fire on the following day, placing a quantity of crude oil thereon. Fire which remained in the furnace ignited the oil and an explosion followed, setting the child's clothing ablaze. She ran out of the building and down the road for nearly half a mile, and when found by neighbors every stitch of clothing was burned from the body. She died a few minutes later. The school building was saved.

Birds of Point Pelee National Park, Ontario, Canada
Tumblr media
Barn Swallows in the Marsh Tower, Point Pelee NP, Ontario, Canada
Point Pelee is a national park in Ontario, Canada known for its unique collection of bird species. Over 390 bird species have been observed in Point Pelee, but why? Point Pelee is a peninsula jutting off into Lake Erie and so is one of the first pieces of land that migratory birds flying across Lake Erie will see flying north. Point Pelee serves as a rest point for these birds who are crossing the Great Lakes. Every May birdwatchers from all across Canada come to Point Pelee to see birds from 2 major migration flyways all descend onto Point Pelee.

Laura + Dan
Pelee was explored (quite past sunset, park security even rolled up on me) and the arts were made - Such an incredibly fun night with these two! ...Thank you for trusting me both artistically and physically when I asked you lay down weirdly on the boardwalk and stood perilously above haha

“Fail to Get Test Case,” Windsor Star. October 9, 1942. Page 17. ---- Sportsmen Invade Point Pelee Sanctuary; No One Arrests Them ----- Inviting arrest in order to get their case into court, Charles Irwin and R M. Crouch of the Essex County Sports men's Association, entered a so-called sanctuary in Point Pelee, denied huntsmen by a ruling of the Department of Mines and Resources. Al though the two illegal trespassers remained in full view of the park superintendent and were in the restricted area from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., no attempt was made to arrest them.
Not content with their results, the two sportsmen called the superintendent's office and said in effect: "Here we are, come and get us; we want to be arrested." But nothing happened Frustrated, the sportsmen now are planning other means of getting their case into court.
EXPLAIN STAND They explain their stand in the following statement, given The Star to-day by R. M. Crouch, the president: "We would like to inform The Windsor Daily Star that on the advice of our attorneys, McRuer, Mason, Cameron and Brewin, solicitors for the Essex County Sportsmen's Association Charles Irwin and I made a formal entry into the so-called sanctuary at Point Pelee on the opening day for this week. Although this took place in clear view of the road and Superintendent Grant knew we were there from 7 a.m. until 2 p.m., no attempt was made to make an arrest. About 11 a.m. we called at the Point office and asked to be summoned for same in order to make a test case in court.
"We claim that the sportsmen have been illegally deprived of hunting in this area for some six years now. Failing to get satisfaction through the federal member for South Essex, Murray Clark, we have had to resort to law in order to get justice.
"We claim that the Department of Mines and Resources has allowed the vermin and birds of prey to increase to such an extent that almost all upland game birds have been destroyed in the park. We intend to fight to have some 200 acres of park lands now fenced in, reopened to the public and have the park as a whole left open for the public to enjoy. We want the park kept in a clean condition and visitors made welcome again. We blame a few so-called naturalists in the department for the conditions that exist in the park today.
HAVE LEGAL ADVICE 'We believe we have the best legal advice in Canada and should the government take the responsibility of passing orders-in-council to cover up what this department has already done, we will still carry on our fight for justice. However, when Dr, Lewis of the Department of Mines and Resources met us on August 12, he clearly stated that the minister could do as he saw fit in this matter and needed no order-in-council for same. We are perfectly willing to let the courts decide this.
"Now that the hours for shooting at the Point have been changed to conform with the Migratory Bird Act, we wish to make it clear that we will request that anyone shooting before or after these hours be prosecuted."’
[AL: The arrogance of a certain type of hunter, and the obstinacy of a government unaccountable, colliding.

lol @ that israeli academic talking about how “newer academics will prosper if this boycott continues?” like if you care so much, maybe don’t be a zionist academic? maybe be outspoken? why would anyone boycott an outspoken anti-zionist academic who is doing right by the marginalised by using their voices to speak up for the truth?
you don’t see people like nurit peled-elhanan, miko peled, yoav litvin, ilan pappe, avi schlaim, etc wail about a zionist academic boycott 🤷‍♀️ first world problems istg. people are dying, academic institutions have been destroyed, respected academic and poets have been specifically threatened, targeted, and killed. who tf cares about your career built on fallacies, racial supremacy, historical revisionism, and settler-colonial justification? even you shouldn’t care. the fact that you’re saying stuff like this shows you’re part of the problem.
Ilan pappe regularly talks about how he was run out of Israel for literally just publishing the truth about the Nakba and none of his fellow Israeli academics stood up for him. He says his picture was put on TV and they encouraged violence against him and his family.
Israeli academics are literally the most complicit in all of this. They obfuscate and they make up facts about Israeli history to the point where the truth is a threat to them. So i have a special disdain for Israeli academics and people who go to Israel to study unless with the explicit purpose of going into Israeli state archives to expose their government records of ethnic cleansing against Palestinians. Otherwise, no, I don't trust you or any sort of resource that comes from Israeli academia (which is overwhelmingly liberal zionist).

Sorry, one more reblog: here's the local news from Hilo Monday evening, which gives you a better sense of how the locals are taking the eruption in stride, and even enjoying it. If you see fearmongering reports from non-Hawaiian sources, eff 'em.
youtube
[Nov 28, 2022] With that mixture of OH SHIT and OH WOW that one so often feels about mother nature at her most powerful, I see that Mauna Loa, the largest volcano on Earth, has started erupting.
Screengrab from summit webcam just now, dawn in Hawai‘i:
Tumblr media
(Not sure how wide this field of view is, but Mauna Loa is unimaginably vast, about 75 miles /120 km across and much taller than Everest if you remove the Pacific Ocean.)
Thermal cam from last night showing the lava pouring across the summit caldera floor:
youtube
Latest update from Hawaii Volcano Observatory says lava hasn't yet left summit caldera. Let's hope it doesn't. Hawaiians know better than I which emergency services to listen to for updates. Praying for y'all that Pele puts on a show without choosing to come makai.
See HVO's Mauna Loa Updates for latest observations as well as emergency maps, information, FAQs, links, and more.
