Please come out to this event, at San Antonio Culture Commons Gallery, 115 Plaza De Armas. I may not be there as I am waiting on a wheelchair to be approved, and surgery, possibly on both feet is highly likely. However, my art is up and that of all of the participating artists. Please come to hear the wonderful poetry and music. The exhibit will run through November. I hope to be at other events later in the year. I am not supposed to be walking at all right now. Crossing fingers my wheelchair gets approved and my apartment complex makes changes to make my unit accessible. I still feel shy reading my poetry in public, but with each attempt it gets a little easier. Had a great night at the @creativehubwex poetry night tonight. Can’t wait for the next one.

This is a poem I read tonight called ‘as the world ended’.

We lived comfortably

As the world ended,

All things considered.

We stayed in more,

Worked a little less.

The weather got hotter, 

Then colder,

And we complained either way.

People were dying

Of course.

But people were always dying.

The news told us

To be cautious

And we were,

For the most part.

We watched a lot

Of cooking shows

And failed

To recreate the recipes.

People were dying,

But our sourdough starter

Was the thing

That preoccupied our thoughts.

We went back to work

Reluctantly,

Students went back to school.

And when,

Weeks later,

Those same students

Were locked inside

Their overpriced accommodation,

Frightened and far from home,

We tutted and said it was a shame.

But truth be told

We were more concerned

With the cake

That got dropped

On Bake Off.

We lived comfortably,

More or less,

As the death toll

Crept on upwards.

We wore our masks

And washed our hands,

And said: “It can’t

Go on forever.”

People were dying,

But people are always dying.

And when we were told

We couldn’t

Go to the funerals

Of friends and acquaintances

We were sad,

But also

We were relieved.

It meant we could

Stay in.

We’d gotten very good

At staying in.

Things got worse,

And worse,

And worse.

With each passing week,

Each rolling news cycle,

Denial got a little bit

Harder.

But humans are nothing

If not persistent.

So we carried on,

And all in all,

We lived comfortably

As the world ended.

ground zero

A huge explosion happened just six years ago When I read the map and understood the secret mission I configured and counted the teams and players Turns out I wasn’t included. Whether I was the umpire or the third party that declared neutrality-- I didn’t know. What I do know is that I didn’t enjoy that show Watching from the sidelines was like tormenting myself Deluding the wounded, me from the anxiety that it was okay to play dead In order to avoid death in the hands of the enemy Days turned to months and to years and the war continued Cold battles of silence and unsung declarations of surrender Filled the air as I tiptoe around the sleeping soldiers Careful not to wake them from their sleep I leave ground zero. Six years later and I had hoped to see a truce Instead, I discover a mysterious box in the basement of my home Inside was an old mirror with a long crack in the middle It was broken but it still showed my reflection In the mirror I saw myself holding a bomb, The fuse already lit and slowly running towards the end I panic and stress kicks in as memories return vividly I throw the bomb to the ocean hoping it won’t come back I remember where it all began again, In that explosion years ago The hidden map and that secret mission The players and the anxiety I return to ground zero It was still silent, Smog still slightly visible. Smell of gunpowder still present. Soldiers dead after years of slumber--

Or are they? Six years later I still dream of a truce Better yet a conclusion to this chaos But still I see the bomb in that basement Every time I return home.
