Willow tit (Hömötiainen) 🤍🖤🤍
Scientific name: Poecile montanus
Willow tits are my favourites of little birds. They are extremely endangered in Finland, because of destruction of natural forests. Every winter I am waiting, will we still see Willow tits or not on our bird feeder. Luckily they still came this year, but there's only two of them. There are clearly less of Willow tits compared to other tits and birds.
Willow tit likes to make its own nest and perfect place to carve a hole is on rotten tree trunk. Willow tits also store their food on trees. Forestry has destroyed natural forests with rotten trees and of course Willow tuts food stashes are being destroyed as well, when the trees are cut.
I love Willow tit, because it is a beautiful small bird, that seems to be quite unique and bold character. I've been lucky to be able the get them eat from my hand and they often come near human in our yard as well as in the forest. I always recognize that they are near, when I hear their unique "yelling" sound. Willow tits are pretty loud for such small birds 😆😆😆
It will be devastating, if our last natural forests will be destroyed and this magickal bird disappears for good 😭😭😭

Today I finally took down the bird feeders and the Chez Tatteredpantaloons winter bird food restaurant closed down for summer. There is still some snow on the ground but the temperatures are warmer and business has slowed down. This year, a lot of spring migrants came back early due to a short warm period, but the winter temperatures returned shortly and lasted a long time, so many migratory birds ended up enjoying the culinary offerings of the restaurant.
Following is a tally of the winter 2023-2024 patrons at the Chez Tatteredpantaloons bird food restaurant.
Common:
Common redpoll (Acanthis flammea)
Eurasian bullfinch (Pyrrhula pyrrhula)
European greenfinch (Chloris chloris)
Great tit (Parus major)
Blue tit (Cyanistes caeruleus)
Coal tit (Periparus ater)
Eurasian magpie (Pica pica)
Hooded crow (Corvus corone)
Red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris)
Rare:
Crested tit (Lophophanes cristatus)
Willow tit (Poecile montanus)
Great spotted woodpecker (Dendrocopos major)
Eurasian sparrowhawk (Accipiter nisus)
House sparrow (Passer domesticus)
Eurasian tree sparrow (Passer montanus)
European hare (Lepus europeaus)
Spring migrants:
Eurasian chaffinch (Fringilla coelebs)
European robin (Erithacus rubecula)
Eurasian siskin (Spinus spinus)
Common blackbird (Turdus merula)
Common wood pigeon (Columba palumbus)
Brambling (Fringilla montifringilla)

Yesterday marked the start of Vinterfåglar inpå knuten, an event organized by Birdlife Sweden where you count the birds that visit your bird feeders during winter! It goes on for a weekend and you report the highest number of each species you see all together. It’s a lot of fun plus you’re contributing to the knowledge about birds during winter and especially how climate change affects which species that stay here❄️

This is a late final post about the 100 bird species challenge for 2018. My final number of species was 82, and here are the last four species since my last post. In the pictures in this post are my first ever hazel grouses sitting in an alder tree full of yummy catkins.
#79 Willow tit (Poecile montanus) #80 Northern hawk-owl (Surnia ulula) #81 Hazel grouse (Tetrastes bonasia) #82 Black grouse (Tetrao tetrix)
