What's In a Kimono? Part 11

On The Sixth Day of Fun I present... a new kimono! This one has all sorts of things going for it, so let's dive in!

Name: Takarabune (宝船) - Treasure Ship Type: Furisode (振袖) Time Period: Late Taisho to Early Showa Periods (1925 - 1930) Age: 94 - 99 Years Old (Antique) Condition: Excellent - No Staining or Marking Material: Silk Motifs: Ships, Pheasants, Peacocks, Arabesque Patterns, Tropical Plants, and City Walls Execution and Techniques: Yuzen and Embroidery Value: $400 - 500 USD Furisode are kimono worn by unmarried women or women on their wedding day and this specific furisode was made for a bride to wear on her wedding day. While it may not seem like it, this is considered a formal black furisode! This was made during a time called the Taisho Roman (大正ロマン), when kimono were highly influenced by Western motifs and techniques. It was extremely fashionable to include as much color as possible onto a furisode but to leave the edges black so that it would be as formal as possible. It also contains five kamon (family crests) to denote its high formality. Going back to the influences of Taisho Roman, this is most apparent in the main motifs; notably, those of the large ship, birds, and tropical locale. The ship is an old sailing ship, likely taking influence from the black ships that sailed to Japan during the Edo Period. The birds, a pheasant and peacock, are popular kimono motifs in Japan, but their execution has a decidedly Western take. The oddest motifs here are the palm trees and city walls. They scream Middle Eastern influence, which is quite rare for kimono of any time period! I'm not sure if the designer had ever been to the Middle East or was just influenced by pictures that they had seen, but it definitely makes the kimono unique ^^
