The Podcast of Oa - JLMay chapters 21 & 22
Co-hosts Phil Bova and Myron Rumsey revisit The Brave and the Bold series as a part of this year’s JLMay in episode 224 of The Podcast of Oa. For our part of this multi-podcast venture, we are talking about issues #21 and 22, a team-up between Green Lantern Hal Jordan and Green Arrow, with a heavy dose of the Phantom Stranger. This is the third and fourth parts of the story, so you may want to listen to episode 516 of The Lanterncast for coverage of the first two issues. We also have Mogo in this episode’s “Know your Corps!” segment and listener feedback.

What do Dandelions know that I don’t?
Let’s talk about dandelions, Taraxacum Officinale. My favorite flower since I was a small child. The flower that nobody liked. As a kid, I loved seeing them growing in the grass, it was so pretty, the bright yellow on the green lawn. I especially loved it when the grass was full of them. I could not understand why people were always trying to kill them.
This was a flower I was allowed to pick, make bouquets with and collect. I remember picking them in the front yard to “save them” from my Dad. The good intention was there anyways.
As an adult, I still like them. I still think they are pretty. But I am a little more philosophical about it. Not that I don’t pick a bouquet when I have the chance.
Think about the dandelion. This is a flower that yearns to live and grow. “Damn hard to get rid of” as my Dad would say. We dig them out by the roots or poison them, and still they come back, spotting the grass with little yellow blooms. We put cinder blocks over them to make a sidewalk and they will pop up in the cracks. It’s like they don’t know, or don’t care that they are under attack. They are just doing their thing.
When it is time for them to die, there is no ugliness, no hard pieces to hurt your feet when you walk barefoot on the lawn. They just change to a white, soft puff ball, and when the wind is just right, their seeds and their DNA are blown up in the air. Wherever they land, a new flower will grow.
What if we had even some of these qualities? What if, in a world that thought we were ugly and unwanted, we could see our own beauty? What if we had the strength to stand up and come back from our defeats, as beautiful and strong as we were before? What if obstacles in our path were simply things we needed to either go around, or go through? What if when we were old and done, we sat at peace, knowing that our lives had meant something and we were leaving a legacy?
I believe that in recovery we have a responsibility to keep learning. The knowledge we get from sources such as AA, NA, OA, Smart Recovery, counselling, therapy, social media, podcasts etc., is invaluable. We would not make it without these resources. But sometimes can we learn lessons and be inspired by the simple things right in front of us, like a silly little flower? from flowers that have been there all along?

To quote The OA: “We’ve been going about this all wrong”
I feel AMATEOTW episode 6 was a real eye opener for both Darby and us viewers. Just like Darby, fans have more likely than not been caught up in our own “whodunnit” (who is the killer, why etc) and this is partly due to the marketing from FX (which maybe is intentional or maybe a complete misdirect) but this episode really shone light on the narrative and murders (both true and fictional). It’s not about the killer at the end of the day, most of the time, like Bill said, they’re boring, predictable, broken people who break others. A predictable pattern we see repeated countless times. We don’t need to keep shining a light on killers, we don’t need to keep the morbid fascination going with true crime podcasts or glamourise them in biopics. It’s about the victims. Who were they before their life was tragically cut short?
And that is what this story has been about the whole time: Bill, the victim. That is why every episode has had a flashback about him. Showing the puzzle pieces of his character. An artist. A lover. A recovered addict who helped Rohan get sober himself. Who wanted to tell the stories of victims, and stop future victims of both serial predators and greedy capitalists. Someone who wanted to help the world be better.
If the end of this show ends up with an “obvious” killer or doesn’t even bother to show them or they are a nobody I won’t be mad because I understand the commentary B&Z are making now. I still feel like we’re set for a doozy of a finale down the rabbit hole that will either wrap up everything or leave us with a million questions. But episode 6 just had such a simple but beautiful message.

Knowledge is a Rumor Until it Lives in the Body
read it on AO3 at https://ift.tt/C7idauY by goblin_king18 None of it mattered. The world was here - a world was here, and they were in it. Jon’s chest did not have a gaping knife wound in it. And the sky was blue and it did not look back down at them. “We did it…” Jon said softly, as if deciding on a conclusion. A simple, dazed statement. One hand still absently rubbed across his chest, as if massaging an invisible bruise. “Wh—” Martin’s voice failed the first go around. He swallowed, hard, and tried again. His hands were shaking. “What…what exactly did we do?” Or, After the end of everything, Jon and Martin wake up somewhere else, in different versions of their own bodies. New Open Access Publication: Communicating about linguistics using lingcomm-driven evidence: Lingthusiasm podcast as a case study
Films have behind-the-scenes commentary tracks, Lingthusiasm now has a behind-the-scenes research article (a DOI rather than a DVD).
This new Open Access article in Language and Linguistics Compass is an introduction to a variety of evidence-based practice from linguistics, education, and psychology we have drawn upon and further developed in the first seven years of creating Lingthusiasm. We introduce you to a lot of the ways we think about framing, jargon, metaphor and putting feeling into our favourite linguistics topics. We argue that this is not just the basis of our work on the podcast, but a way of formalising the contribution that lingcomm (linguistics communication) can make to the larger field of scicomm (science communication). We also share some results from our 2022 listener survey that illustrate how our audience is receptive to the work we're doing.
We hope that it provides a bit of an insight into how we do what we do, but also inspires other linguists to communication their research - whether that's in a 3 minute thesis competition, a blog post for your institution, or "trying out [lingcomm] explanations during relevant, natural occasions in local communities" (i.e., chatting with friends and family, which is where we come up with some of our best episode ideas!).
Abstract
Communicating linguistics to broader audiences (lingcomm) can be achieved most effectively by drawing on insights from across the fields of linguistics, science communication (scicomm), pedagogy and psychology. In this article we provide an overview of work that examines lingcomm as a specific practice. We also give an overview of the Lingthusiasm podcast, and discuss four major ways that we incorporate effective communications methodologies from a range of literature in the production of episodes. First, we discuss how we frame topics and take a particular stance towards linguistic attitudes, second, we discuss how we introduce linguistic terminology and manage audience cognitive load, third, we discuss the role of metaphor in effective communication of abstract concepts, and fourth, we discuss the affective tools of humour and awe in connecting audiences with linguistic concepts. We also discuss a 2022 survey of Lingthusiasm listeners, which highlights how the audience responds to our design choices. In providing this summary, we also advocate for lingcomm as a theoretically-driven area of linguistic expertise, and a particularly effective forum for the application of linguistics.

It’s another basement, but this time it’s a happier ending.
Omar sincerely believes that as he stands outside of a house that costs upwards of a million dollars and watches the girls who now stand in the garden, that overlooks the beach. There’s over twenty of them.
They’d been crowded into another damp basement, one that was barely bigger than his kitchen. The conditions were cramped, squalid. Each one is in a state of disarray, their clothing is brightly coloured, barely there. Most of them had still been turning tricks up until the moment you’d gotten your hands on Snake. Now they’re mostly huddled together in groups, thermal blankets wrapped around their shoulders as paramedics review their vitals, triaging the ones that need the most urgent care.
Seeing them all out here in the fresh air, the sun on their faces…
It settles something in his chest because for the first time since stepping into country they’re free.
As soon as the perps are taken into custody, you’re on the phone. The Human Trafficking Division has crisis teams in place to handle large scale operations like this. It won’t take them too long to scramble. He knows it’s going to be a long night for your team, there’s going to be interviews with the girls, strategy meetings, leads to chase down, connections to other networks.
It never ends. There’s always going to be another and then another.
He understands to most people it’s a game of whack amole but when he looks at these girls, the difference it makes on an individual level, he gets why you do it. He sees the reason you keep hammering away at the problem despite the fact you’re swimming against the tide.
It takes a special person to do what you do and not become jaded. He’s still thinking about that when he sits across from you in a coffeeshop later that evening. You’ve chosen somewhere lowkey, open late. There’s jazz playing in the background, something he recognises from a lifetime ago.
You’re wearing your hair down tonight; it falls across your features, hiding the bruise that’s now blossoming across the left side of your face. He resists the urge to reach out and brush it back behind your ear. He likes this version of you, the woman outside of the job. You smile a lot more, you’re more relaxed, carefree.
The music has him telling you about his teenage years, how he used to sneak out at the age of seventeen and visit jazz clubs in Harlem. He’s still a fan of the genre, he has a few friends who play in a band, they have a gig coming up in a couple of weeks. You make plans to attend, work permitting, and he realises in that moment that he’s not the only one looking towards the future.
He finds himself laughing when you tell him you used to be a ghost walk tour guide back in Delaware. You were good at it too; you show him a recording of one of your tours and he finds himself enamoured. You have such a talent with words, the way you tell the stories, it’s so visual, he gets chills up his spine.
“I have a podcast.” You reveal, a blush creeping up your cheeks. “It’s on Spotify, I tell ghost stories from around the city. I don’t usually tell people about it.”
“Show me.” He urges.
You end up on his side of the table, his arm resting on the back of the seat as you lean in close. The scent of your perfume floods his senses, nectarines, and something floral. Jasmine, he thinks. The two of you scroll through your episode list as you describe each of the stories to him. The way you light up when you talk about your passion, truly it’s beautiful.
You tilt your head up towards him and you have that look in your eyes, the one that makes his heartbeat just that little faster in his chest. His thumb chases over the line of your jaw, and you close your eyes, savouring the sensation. It’s been a long time since you’ve allowed yourself to be touched, he can tell from the way you respond to him.
“Hanna…” He says, tipping your chin up and you know what he’s asking.
If this is as far as you want to go tonight, he has no problem with that. He’s ready to take things at your pace, as slow as you need to go.
“Kiss me.” You whisper and he does.
His mouth is heated, soft. He kisses you with a tenderness you’ve never felt before, and you know in that moment that you’ve met the man that you’re supposed to spend the rest of your life with.
Your soulmate.
Omar Zidan.

S3E5. Motifs & Symbolism (Or, We're Okay Being Associated with S&M)
Hello! Happy Tuesday! Our May episode is here!
In this episode, Jo (@pebblysand) and Lani (@copper-dust) discuss motifs and symbolism in writing. Lani goes through the different motifs she either intentionally or unintentionally uses in her own work, and they both caution against the use of clichéd symbols, like relying on weather to reflect a character’s emotions. They also address misconceptions about symbolism and Lani insists that not every detail in a story is symbolic. They encourage writers to develop their own personal motifs and use of symbols in their own works.

yo i heard a green lantern 2023 theory that i would like to talk about
i was listening to a green lantern podcast and Apparently there’s a page missing in the digital edition of green lantern #2!!!
such an important page to remove lol?? anyway this explains where all the other 2814 gls are (i thought i missed an issue or something) and most importantly 4 this post it says that [redacted] is deceased according to hal.
HERE’S THE THEORY (last chance to avoid possible spoilers)
kilowog is dead and hal’s been hallucinating him the entire book. it makes sense considering the opening scene in issue 1 with hal pretending to talk to kilowog, and the fact that kilowog was chilling with him at his trailer in issue 2. esp in issue 2 the vibe was off… earth is under quarantine so killowog wouldn’t be allowed to visit?? but i figured he was breaking to law for hal.
the podcast hosts (here’s the pod) go on to say that this explains hal’s weird treatment of carol in issue 2. regardless of ur opinion on hal locking the boyfriend in the bathroom and harassing carol on the plane it’s 1 fucking creepy and 2 out of character !!! having unprocessed grief would explain his desperation 4 her. this doesn’t excuse carol’s characterization i still think she should have told him to sprint across the 101.
but ya i love a grief storyline and hal’s mental breakdowns so i’m excited and i think this theory is true!! they also say something about kilowog being the reason why hal knows he’s in a dream in his knight terrors issue.
#green lantern#hal jordan#meta#haven’t seen anyone post about this!#im a fan of anything that will explain ooc hal#carol should be meaner#i’m coming from the ted lasso fandom where the fans were better writers than the actual staff writers so i am afraid to have any theories#but i am a jeremy adams fan 🫣#i’ve been holding out hope that the plane scene would make sense later in the run#i know u can’t trust white men as far as u can throw them#but it was soooo Egregious it must be setting something up

Wow so! Developments in the podcastosphere!
Listened to the beginning of the latest dear old dads episode this morning and Thomas was like "I'm back on opening arguments! Listen to it!" And I was like "good! I think. What does this mean?" So I headed to the reddit.
So the basic gist as I understand it is that the company opening arguments LLC got put into receivership for the duration of the court battle, which is far from over. But a receivership means a third party gets put in charge of how the business is run to preserve its value. Each side put forward a candidate (Thomas picked a woman who had retired from her popular podcast, Andrew was like "she is going to be biased towards Thomas because reasons, what about this media management guy who also is involved in small podcasts" and Thomas was like "but he has never been involved in a large podcast and his small podcasts would be competing with OA" ) and the court liked Thomas's pick better, and she agrees that the best way to maintain the brand is for Thomas to record new episodes with other lawyers for the time being.
So I guess things are going as well as could be expected when dealing with that shitshow.
Also spotted on the reddit some unqualified good news! Morgan Stringer has indeed, as I hoped, been well served by her connection with the Knowledge Fight podcast and is now happily employed at the same firm as Mark Bankston.

Happy Whumpmas (•∇•。) 🎅🎄🎁🦌 🍪 🥛!!! You have just been snowballed by a secret whumper. Help to keep the snowball fight going by anonymously sending this to five other whumpers with a whump-related question of your choice: of the movies, shows, books, games or podcasts you consumed this year, what were your top three favourite whump moments?
Aah, thanks, Nonny! Happy Whumpmas!
3) Discovered a new whumpee obsession in the form of OA Zidan in FBI. I binged the show pretty fast and while he hasn't had any really big whump yet, there are a lot of little moments that are excellent. Like in 1x16 when he gets shot in his vest and has the wind knocked out of him, plus a moment of panic (as he doesn't know whether the vest stopped the bullet or not) and some really good sounds as he wheezes for breath. Highly recommend checking out at least his whump episodes.
2) Edinburgh Twilight by Carole Lawrence has several good moments of whump for the main character, DI Ian Hamilton, but the climax of the book is especially good, seeing him, among other things, get slashed with a scythe and then, woozy and delirious with blood loss, rush into a burning building (despite his very angsty backstory that gave him a fear of fire).
1)The number one spot is reserved for Half Bad: The Bastard Son of the Devil Himself. I can't recommend this show enough. It is packed to the brim with whump and cool magic and there's queer representation and I just love it a lot. Thought my favorite character doesn't show up for a few episodes, my favorite whump is in the pilot episode, where the main character gets accidentally stabbed while trying to escape his sadistic, torturing sister and her lackey. It is so, so good.
xxx
This might be my last post for this year, or at least until after Christmas. So happy holidays to all my lovely followers! Whether you celebrate or don't, I hope the rest of your year is splendid!
