Running 2019: July to December
As you may of remembered I pretty much finalized my first half schedule for 2019. It was pretty easy to do, because I’m going after a few goals — including location races and time goals. But, as it comes to looking ahead to the second half of next year, um, I don’t know?
Seriously.
This is the hardest part of my 2019 running year to plan for — because — I am not 100% what I want to accomplish? I mean, I do, but I don’t. My long term number one goal will always be a 100 mile race until I accomplish it. It’s just the when that I need to figure out.
The only thing I know that I got going for me for next year is two things — one, I don’t want to run anything longer than a 10K between November and December, and two, I want to tackle a few faster half marathons.
With that in mind I came up with the following race calendar for 2019. The only non-faster or canyon half marathons are Pocatello and Antelope Island. But, I want to go hard at DesNews, Nebo, Revel BC and The Haunted Half in SLC. That is why I am surrounding them with a few 5Ks and training runs.
Now, this could change depending on when I want to go hard for the marathons and ultras. But, I have goals for the half marathon distance that I want to hit and I know that my body can’t focus on both. My fastest half marathons came in 2013 when I was only focusing on and running half marathons.
I feel like if I continue to grow on this base, get faster, get proper training and just work hard that this will build me up for a year of marathons and ultras in 2020. Specifically an attempt to tackle my elusive 100 mile race. That feels like a solid plan and goal.
I am noticing a pattern in my running where I am good with ultras for a couple years before going back down to half marathons and shorter distances. I feel like this is a good pattern to follow, especially as I age and face my 40s within the next few years. I really want to hit many of my ultra goals before I hit 40 — so 2020 and half of 2021 will give me a good run in that cycle.
Anyways, that’s a looooong post for another day.
But, let’s get to my proposed race schedule for the last half of 2019. Like I’ve mentioned numerous times already, this is subject to change. And, I’ll post all of the group runs for the Trails & Pavement group a bit later in the month.

November 2, 2019
November 30, 2019
December 21, 2019
I feel like that’s a pretty good schedule, don’t you? That gives me a bit of time to rest in November before going into marathon training for 2020. I am thinking about kicking that off with the Ogden Marathon?
We’ll see, that sounds like a great place to start, but stay tuned. I will probably do a mock draft of my 2020 race schedule in the next few weeks — just to plant the seed of the direction I want to take in the next couple of years.
Anyways, what races are you planning on doing in 2019? Are you registered for any races in 2019 already?

i grew up in the state of utah, and as quick as i was to leave after high school, i can’t shake the odd nostalgia i feel for it now. the specific nostalgic southwestern feeling i get from ecctericc cowboy-themed gas stations. the films ‘Raising Arizona’ and ‘My Own Private Idaho’ and ‘Stand By Me’ and ‘Brokeback Mountain’ and ‘Naked Lunch’. the red rock hoodoos and the far-out potato farms. the bands Harley Poe, The Pixies, and Widespread Panic. the cattle call of Eddy Arnold and the mountain song of John Denver. places like Durango, Moab, Pocatello, Evanston, Coalville. cowboy hats mostly for show and dusty pairs of wooden skis. suede fringed vests, thick bushy mustaches, and the thin veil of an accent compensating for masculinity. campfires, empty long highways, sand, black beetles, prickly pear cactus, emerald coloured waters, orange formations of rock, paint brush flowers, crickets, log cabins, pine trees, church goers, stolen land, chewing tabacco, coyotes, broken static-y car radios, canyons, the sun beating down on you, lucky rabbits foot, lizards, cattle, cow bells, overalls, secret meetings, high noon, half-marathons, donkeys, red salsa, wild sagebrush, hawks, earthquakes, bears, wildfires, vultures, ATVS, goats, tortoises, gas station petting zoos, camels brand cigarettes, taxidermy deer mount, tales of jackalopes and ghosts.
i guess it goes to show that as much as i hated my life and where i lived, it was home for so long.

That &@$# Ankle ... but ... it's getting better!
Tumblr media
After nearly two and a half years of dealing with a stupid hurting ankle — I finally have some answers. Like, some concrete answers — along with some tangible solutions. Something I’ve felt would never happen after dealing with the pain for over a couple years.
As a refresher — on April 1, 2017 — while running down Emigration Canyon I twisted my right ankle on a pothole. It hurt, but nothing I felt that was too serious in the moment. I had sprained my ankle before and they would just naturally heal after icing and babying it for a week or so.
Welp, after babying it for about a month I went to the foot doctor and got prescribed physical therapy and rest. After a couple of months of PT — I didn’t show much progress, but was told it would take some time to feel better.
So, I kept running waiting for the pain to go away.
I really should have pushed on the brakes, but I had a number of goals I wanted to reach sooner than later. One, was reaching my 180th race — I had about 25-30 races to go and really wanted to push to get that goal done within a year — and, two, I was working on training for a 100 mile run. I had places to go and races to run.
I really should have stopped. But, I didn’t.
Moving into 2018 I decided to go back into getting my ankle checked again, because NOTHING was helping subside the pain. But, I was once again given PT and told to ice it when needed. It was a constant reminder running up or down hill, running fast or slow, and even simply walking anywhere. I was constantly icing and babying it and I lost my rhythm. Like all of it.
2018 was full of many ups and downs for me — especially reaching my 180th race. But, as many highs as I had — I had a number of lows as well. But, none more than this year. Everything I tried to do just fell flat. My training fell flat. I was in more and more pain — and my body just couldn’t do what I knew it needed to do.
So I backed off on the running — almost completely. I took what my body could give me. I cut a lot of the half marathons and trail races I planned for the year and either downgraded them to the 10K or 5K … or just didn’t do them. That was very difficult for me to do because I knew where I could physically be — and I just wasn’t there. Let alone mentally as well.
It’s funny — well, okay, not really funny — how we process and deal with pain both physically and mentally. If I’ve learned anything from my two year experience with my ankle it’s how easy to amend our behaviors and habits to temper the pain rather than fix it. I think that’s kind of natural habit, especially when it feels like you’ve exhausted your resources on a solution.
But, as much as I tried to live with the stupid pain — I knew I didn’t have to live with it forever. I needed a solution. There had to be a solution. But, how do you really keep believing in there being a solution after you’ve gone to two doctors who just prescribe physical therapy? But, I knew it was more than just a bum sprained ankle and there had to be a better solution than what I’ve gotten from two feet doctors.
So, I went for a third opinion.
Dr. Trevor Williams — aka The Foot Doctor — was recommended to me by a number of runners, including his wife Anna. I wish I went to him MUCH earlier, because he got right down to finding a solution. In the hour — well 45 minutes — of me being there he hooked up my ankle to the ultrasound machine looking for an ACTUAL solution.
After seeing some possible damage he ordered a MRI — something that previous two doctors didn’t do. I finally felt that a solution to the pain was moving along. And, after the MRI the tests came back last Friday stating what was kind of expected — I had a tear in the peroneal tendon along with a bone spur that was aggravated the tendon.
I would need surgery to fix it.
Which I was oddly ecstatic about. But, given the mental and physical toil I’ve gone through the past couple of years — it was a tangible solution! Sure, there’s nothing minor than surgery — but at the same time Dr. Williams reassured me that I should be back and running within 8-12 weeks after surgery and be in a boot for about 6-8 of those weeks.
I can live with that temporary pain, because I have places to go, races to run and goals to meet. I desperately want to feel balanced and being 100% balanced physically is a big part of that. So three months of rehab, boots and strength training is where my focus will be — and I’m totally cool with that — because I see a solution to the issue at hand.
This does mean I will have to miss a few races. Not too many thankfully — namely the New Year’s Revolution Run (the first time missing it since 2011!) and the Sweethearts 5K. I didn’t schedule a lot of races in the winter — because I kinda anticipated something like this to happen with my ankle — plus I hate running in the cold anyways.
The only part of my schedule I am not sure about would be my March races. I was looking forward to the Canyonlands Half Marathon (because I’ve never been to Moab) and the March Madness 10K (because it benefits my hometown’s pantry) — but, I might defer my Canyonlands bib to next year and then downgrade to the 5K at the March Madness.
But, that will all determine how well my ankle responds to the surgery and rehab. Which shouldn’t be too much of an issue based on what Dr. Williams told me. So, the next 3-4 months will be spent REALLY watching my diet and doing consistent strength training. I might even jump in the pool a bit as well, who knows?
I am just glad and UBER excited to finally have some answers to this stupid issue that’s plagued me for over two years. I feel hopeful and that’s been something I haven’t felt about my running in quite a while! WOOT!
Here’s my revised race schedule for 2020 …

Running 2020 Goals & Outlook
Tumblr media
We have two months left of 2019 — but, I am already looking at, planning and anticipating the new year. I’ve done this in the past, but this year it’s because — well — I gave up on making much of the rest of this year. I stopped tracking my weekly and monthly mileage and I am just focusing on rehabbing my ankle, refocusing my fitness and recentering myself until the turn of the calendar. My body needs it.
I am tempering my excitement and goals for 2020, because I overdid it in 2019. I had many grandiose goals and plans. And, well, that all fell flat. I can’t even begin to tell you how many DNS’ I collected. A lot. Too many. I spent too much money on nothing.
I think part of that was fueled by this anxious need to be somewhere with my fitness and running that just wasn’t realistic. Anxiety that’s been somewhat fueled by my desire to crank out that elusive 100 miler — something I really would like to get done by 2021 when I turn 40. That’s about 20-ish months away — which I think is doable, but I’m not sure if it is realistically smart to put that deadline on me?
But, that’s a post for another day.
As I look forward to the new year, I am optimistic of what I have in front of me. I am keeping my goals simple and really seeking out — fun. If there has been something missing the past couple of years from my running it’s been the focus on fun. Mainly, because I’ve been too focused on reaching goals that were getting harder and harder to reach. I really just need to inject more fun into my running.
How am I going to have more fun in 2020? Well, for one — I am keeping my goals simple, focusing on one goal race (a marathon) and finding a cross-training exercise or hobby each month to learn and tackle (ie — cycling, hiking, swimming, dancing, martial arts, etc.). Just something different and fun!
But, the goal for all of my goals is to make sure they support each other — and that I end 2020 much more happier, fulfilled and grateful than the past couple of years. Not, that they have completely sucked — they’ve just sucked fitness and running wise. And, I’m just tried of dealing with many of the same issues year in, year out.
So here is a look of my 2020 goals and schedule. Of course the schedule could change — and probably will — but, the focus is to at least do the Revel Big Cottonwood Marathon in September 2020. I’m toeing that start line and crossing the finish line!
Tumblr media
I told you these goals were simple. But, I like that. I need that. Especially, right now. The number one goal is to run a marathon — it’ll have been four years since my last marathon once I do the Revel Big Cottonwood Marathon next year. That’s too long. I crave the long distance.
I injected a little fun in my goal mileage — yes — it’s in reference to 7 Eleven. That’s an average of 59.25 miles a month, which will be a good challenge. But, since I am marathon training beginning in May — I’ll get a bulk of those miles between May and September. That leaves me some more recovery months in the winter months. It’s a good goal
And, then the cross-training goal I mentioned above. I’m just going to find fitness things to train for, do, tackle, whatever — that sound fun to me. I have a few ideas on what I’d like to do, but I’m not going to plan that all out right now. I’ll give myself a leeway of at least a couple of months.
But, what do you think of my 2020 goals?
Run a marathon.
Run 711 miles.
Cross-train a new hobby/sport/interest each month.
I feel like these are good goals for me. They’re simple, they’re methodical and goals that will — or should — lead me to bigger goals for 2021. Which will hopefully lead me toward my 100 mile goal.
And, quite honestly, depending on how I feel with my marathon training, I’d really like to possibly tackle the St. George Marathon and Antelope Island 50K again — favorite races of mine. But, I really don’t want to get too ahead of myself.

I am feeling good about my goals. I am feeling good about my race schedule. I have a marathon training plan as well — that I’ll share later. But, I feel that I am getting ahold of my health and fitness and really I feel like I am starting all over again with running — which has been more of a liberating feeling than anything.
So, yeah, that makes for a fun, challenging and hopefully — rewarding — 2020.

This is 2020 ...
Tumblr media
First off, if you don’t get the title of this blog post — I’m sorry, we can’t be friends. It just won’t work out. Secondly, it’s hard to believe that I am LEGITIMATELY planning for my 2020 running schedule. I swear it should still be 2000 and 2020 is still 20 years away. Where did the time go?
Well, for the past decade — running.
But, as I process this past year and the things that it was and wasn’t — I’ve really been focusing on what I want out of 2020. I still want a marathon journey — the one I was supposed to have this summer, but got savagely killed due to bronchitis and walking pneumonia. And, I still want to move forward and toward my 100 mile race goal. I’ve made a goal that I want to reach that before I turn 40 — so by August 15, 2021.
I am not anticipating to attempt it in 2020. Mainly because I don’t have that desire. I just really want/need/must have a marathon journey. I’m craving adventure and an accomplishment that will help erase the disappointments of the past couple of years.
Tumblr media
Training schedule I’ll be following for the 2020 Revel Big Cottonwood Marathon. Notice that this is for 2019. This is basically an adapted version of Hal Higdon’s training plan.
I decided to make my marathon for 2020 the Revel Big Cottonwood Marathon — it was a pretty easy decision to be honest. It’s my favorite marathon down my favorite canyon by my favorite race company. Really, how do you walk (or run) away from that?
So, I’ll be working toward the marathon most of the summer via the same training plan I made for this year. It’ll be a 16 week training plan with plenty of training runs and races down canyons, etc. I am craving that. I am craving that now, but I also am smart enough to know I’m not quite there yet — though I’d love to be.
As I stare at the calendar for 2020, this is what I’ve scribbled up as a training/race schedule. I’m not including my midweek runs — just Saturday long runs (and, well, midweek races like DesNews and Revolution Run). Plus, I posted my mock training schedule above so that gives you an idea of what I’ll be running midweek.
Anywho, without further adieu …
January

I feel good about this schedule — especially training schedule, because I really, really want to do another marathon. And, if I am going to do another marathon I really want it be one I know that I’ll enjoy. Now heaven help me going into 2020 to stay healthy and work hard to get where I’d like to be with my fitness.
Because, I want to take that next step toward doing a 100 miler.

Finalizing my 2019 Race Schedule ... I hope.
Tumblr media
Okay kids, I think I finally got my schedule figured out for the rest of the year? I’m pretty sure this will be the final schedule. But, if you read my previous post of lamentation and subsequent post trying to figure out what to do with the rest of my 2019 race schedule you’ll know if been a TAD of a frustrating year of running. I’ll just kind of leave it at that.
But, as I’ve looked at my race schedule for the rest of the year I kind of took a Marie Kondo approach to each race. I simply asked myself — does this race bring me joy? If it did, I kept it — and if it didn’t, I sent it to the Goodwill. Pretty much as simple as that.
So that meant this past week I sold my Huntsville Marathon (September 21) bib, deferred my Pocatello Half Marathon (August 31) bib and then added the Elephant Rock Trail 7 Mile Run (August 10), Mt. Nebo Half (August 24) and The Haunted 5K: Provo (October 26). I really just wanted to do races I knew I would enjoy — and I think, and feel, that I accomplished that.
However, I’ve been seriously debating on using my race credit for the Mt. View Trail Half Marathon (November 16) — but, I’m not biting on that yet, because I don’t really want to race long distances in the cold if I can avoid it. I might sign up for a 5K or two in November like I did last year. Stay tuned on that though.
But, this is what my schedule is looking like starting with this Saturday’s 10K in Farmington. I feel really good about the schedule — there’s some good challenges, and fun races I know I’ll enjoy.
12 — Farmington Days 10K; July 13 13 — Handcart Days 5K; July 20 14 — Deseret News 10K; July 24 15 — Timp Half; July 27 16 — Launch Team 10K; August 3 17 — Elephant Rock Trail Run; August 10 18 — Mt. Nebo Half; August 24 19 — Addict II Athlete 5K; September 7 20 — Revel Big Cottonwood Half Marathon; September 14 21 — The Haunted Half: SLC; October 19 22 — The Haunted 5K: Provo; October 26 23 — South Davis Turkey 10K; November 28
What are your thoughts on my schedule? Are you signed up for any those races? Let me know in the comments below!
The bottom line to all of this is simply — I just want to have fun. I need that element right now in my running. I’ve had so many downs this year that I just want some successes for a change and going into many of these races without too high expectations is really my MO for the rest of the year.
Easy, right?
My plan is to just be consistent with my training and diet. I’ve had a switch in medications that should help the weight loss a bit better (long story). But, my training is simply weights twice a week, two 3-4 mile HR runs and a long run between 3-13 miles depending on training or race schedule.
Well, okay, more than anything — simple and low pressure. But, my hope is to build upon that base starting in 2020 and going where my body takes me. I’ll get where I want to go — eventually. But, I’m really not worried about that for now. There’s a time and place for all of that and that time and place are 2020.
Anyways, I’m feeling good about the plan from here on out. I’ve decided no races in December, I just want to deal with the cold. I’ll do plenty of training runs on the treadmill and outside — weather permitting. But, I just don’t do well in the cold.
I am starting to look at my 2020 schedule and really focusing on the races I absolutely WANT to do. I have a few — Salt Lake City Half Marathon, Revel Big Cottonwood, Utah Valley Half Marathon, Vigor Big Cottonwood and a few others. But, like this race schedule I’m treating each race like Marie Kondo would with cluttered junk — it’s kinda spark some sort of join within me.
Stay tuned.

My 2019 Second Half Race Schedule
Tumblr media
Welp, it’s now July, officially making it the second half of the year. I’m not going to rehash my disappointment into what this year has become for me. It basically started with lots of hope — and then turned into a turd. Health issues, back issues, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah … I really don’t want to rehash it all (so if you’re interested you can read this)
First off, here’s a brief look back at the first half of my race schedule …
1 — New Year’s Revolution Run; January 1 (8.5 miles/3 hours)  2 — Sun Half Marathon; February 2 (3:25:42) 3 — SLTC Winter Series 15K; February 23 (2:27:51.8)  4 — SoCal Half Marathon; March 2 (4:56:29) 5 — Lucky13 10K; March 16 (1:22:52) 6 — Run Emigration 10 Miler; April 6 (2:17:55.28) 7 — Salt Lake City Half Marathon; April 13 (3:11:26)  8 — Revel Mt. Charleston Half Marathon; April 27 (3:09:21.8) 9 — Vigor Big Cottonwood 10K; May 11 (1:14:25) 10 — Drop13 Big Cottonwood 5K; June 8 (0:32:36) 11 — Dirty Dash 5K; June 8 (Untimed)
There’s nothing too noteworthy from those races. There were a couple painful and disappointing results. But, I will say I was very proud and happy with my results from the Salt Lake City Half Marathon, Vigor Big Cottonwood 10K and Drop13 Big Cottonwood 5K. And, I had a lot of fun running the Sun Half and Dirty Dash — more so for the company than the result.
So the running hasn’t been THAT bad — it’s just not been as consistent as I hoped it would be. But, at this point — there’s not much I can do about that. I just have to play with the hand that I’ve been dealt. And, I’m folding.
Okay, that sounded a BIT too traumatic. But, let’s be honest, it was a great metaphor. I’m really just folding the goals and milestones I set out to accomplish this year. Meaning — no marathons, no ultras and no more closer to my ultimate goal — a 100 miler.
I’ve come to terms with that and I am moving forward with one goal in mind — make running fun again. The past couple of years has really demoralizing and frustrating. Again, I don’t want to rehash it all — but, it really started April 1, 2017 when I sprained my ankle. Not meeting goals I’ve wanted to DESPERATELY meet has really killed a lot of joy I find in running.
If it wasn’t for the people within this community, I honestly don’t know if I’d even want to continue pursuing some of these goals. But, I know if I want to get where I eventually want to be — I’ve got to find that joy and satisfaction once again. And, I know that will come as I immerse myself within the local running community and just stick to my training plan. Not a training plan that’s pointing to a 100 miler or marathon, but simply general fitness and half marathons.
This second half of the year — I’m simply not focusing on a training plan for a specific race. The focus is really just continuing my keto diet, be consistent with my running and workouts and have fun. I’ll push myself when I feel the need and I’ll hold back when my body tells me otherwise — but the rest of 2019 is really just finding that consistent joy I miss from my running.
What will 2020 hold then? I’m not sure. I’m not thinking too much about that right now. Honestly, I feel like I just need to continue to build upon what I want to build right now. If that means a few more half marathons or perhaps a goal race — so be it. And, if that also means a marathon then I’m all for it. But, I’m not going to push myself into doing something that will set me for failure if my body and health just isn’t ready for it either.
I’m going to spend the next few weeks and kind of shape out my 2020 race schedule. I have a couple of races already planned — Salt Lake City Half, Utah Valley Half and the Heber Half. Beyond that — I’m not sure what I really want to do yet? And, I am beyond fine with that.
As far as my remaining 2019 schedule — this is what I have planned.
12 — Farmington Days 10K; July 13 13 — Handcart Days 5K; July 20 14 — Deseret News 10K; July 24 15 — Timp Half; July 27 16 — Launch Team 10K; August 3 17 — Elephant Rock Trail Run; August 10 18 — Pocatello Half Marathon; August 31 19 — Addict II Athlete 5K; September 7 20 — Revel Big Cottonwood Half Marathon; September 14 21 — The Haunted Half: SLC; October 19 22 — The Haunted 5K: Provo; October 26 23 — South Davis Turkey 10K; November 28
The only races I am not completely sold on doing right now are the Timp Half (July 27) and Pocatello Half Marathon (August 31). I might defer, sell or just DNS those two bibs — I’m not sure yet? I almost kinda want to see if I can switch my Timp Half to the Mt. Nebo Half (August 24) instead? I’d feel more confident with my training if I gave myself an extra month-ish to train for the half. But, we’ll see … I’ll give myself a week or so to decide on that one.
There are a couple other races I am looking at possibly doing, they are …
Witch Run; September 28
Antelope Island 10K; October 12
Mountain View Trail Half Marathon; November 16
Utah Santa Run; December 7
A lot depends on those races — mainly — health and desire. I really would like to do the Mountain View Trail Half Marathon. That race is on Antelope Island and I have race credit to use from volunteering last year. The weather is usually good out there in November — so I might bite the bullet on that one. But, who knows?
One thing I just noticed — I will be hitting my 3,000th race mile at the Handcart Days 5K later this month. That seems sooooooo fitting considering it was my first half marathon, my 100th race over 13.1, and race 180 last July. I’m excited to tackle that — and the other races in front me. No, not races — adventures. They’re all adventures — and that’s how I have to look at them all.

Can I Just Get A Redo on 2019?
Tumblr media
Can I just get a break? Please? This past year has been one MASSIVE disappointment. It’s been a year MANY false starts, dashed hopes and lost goals. It started with the desire to end the year with a 50 miler, which was amended to a marathon because of back problems.
But, now, I don’t even know what to think? This past month killed me. I had a number of races planned (Utah Valley Half, Drop13 5K, Dirty Dash, Utah Summer Games 10K, Heber Half) — and ended up only doing two of them (Drop13 5K and Dirty Dash) because I came down with a nasty case of bronchitis that turned into walking pneumonia.
It wiped the last three weeks completely out.
Completely out.
I ended up with just 9.2 running miles for June. And, I was supposed to be marathon training. And, well, that’s not happening anymore. And, that’s been the hardest thing to come to terms with because I really felt the need for a marathon journey. I just know that as it stands right now — I won’t be ready for the Revel Big Cottonwood Marathon in September, especially after just doing 9.2 miles in the month — my long runs should be muuuuuuch longer than that!
So, I’m kind of just giving up on any plans or goals on my 2019 running. It’s a wash. At this point, I don’t really care if I run another marathon ever. Heck, any long term goal right now — I just don’t want to entertain. I’m done with the frustration, heartbreak and disappointment of unmet goals. I’m just done.
Now does this mean I am done with running? No. Heavens no. But, we’re half way through 2019 — and instead of trying to right the ship to achieve some meaningful goal, I’m just going to run. I am just going to focus on the distances and races I want to do. I want to focus on the reasons why I love running — the satisfaction of doing it, the community that comes with it and the positive impact it has on my mental health. And, then I just want to build from there.
I’ve dropped a number of my races this year — either by simply dropping them, deferring them to 2020 or giving them to others. I’m trying not to think of the financial impact this year’s unmet goals have had on me, but in my current frame of mind … I simply don’t care. I’d rather do what I want to do than what I feel like I should be doing — and there’s really no set price for that.
I’ve ended up dropping Speedgoat 25K, Mt. Nebo Half, Pocatello Half Marathon and the Revel Big Cottonwood Marathon. I’ll still be doing the Revel Big Cottonwood Half Marathon, but the other races I’m simply walking away from — well, except the Mt. Nebo Half I deferred to The Haunted Half in SLC. Either way, I’ve walked away from a lot of my races.
But, I’m not walking away from all of them. Like I mentioned above, I’m still doing the Revel Big Cottonwood Half Marathon (I’m a Legacy Runner that wants to hit the 10 year club!). But, I’m still planning on a number of 5Ks and 10Ks as well — but, more than that I’m also just focusing on running solo, something I haven’t done a lot the past 5-6 years. I miss that solo running time.
Anyways, here is what my racing schedule shaping out to become — a far cry from the 30+ races I had a planned at the beginning on January. And, you know what? I am okay with that. This year hasn’t been what I wanted it to become, but that’s okay.
I still don’t know exactly what I will do with the Huntsville Marathon. I am currently signed up for the 26.2, but I might switch to the half marathon or 10K? We’ll see.
1 — New Year’s Revolution Run; January 1 (8.5 miles/3 hours)  2 — Sun Half Marathon; February 2 (3:25:42)  3 — SLTC Winter Series 15K; February 23 (2:27:51.8)  4 — SoCal Half Marathon; March 2 (4:56:29)  5 — Lucky13 10K; March 16 (1:22:52)  6 — Run Emigration 10 Miler; April 6 (2:17:55.28)  7 — Salt Lake City Half Marathon; April 13 (3:11:26)  8 — Revel Mt. Charleston Half Marathon; April 27 (3:09:21.8)  9 — Vigor Big Cottonwood 10K; May 11 (1:14:25)  10 — Drop13 Big Cottonwood 5K; June 8 (0:32:36)  11 — Dirty Dash 5K; June 8 (Untimed)  12 — Handcart Days 5K; July 20 13 — Deseret News 10K; July 24 14 — Timp Half; July 27 15 — Launch Team 10K; August 3 16 — Elephant Rock Trail Run; August 10 17 — Addict II Athlete 5K; September 7 18 — Revel Big Cottonwood Half Marathon; September 14 19 — Huntsville Marathon; September 21 20 — The Haunted Half: SLC; October 19 21 — South Davis Turkey 10K; November 28
I might add a 5K or 10K here and there, but I feel good about that schedule. I just want to focus on this last half of the year in getting stronger, more fit and faster through meaningful training and finding my mojo once again. That’s all I really want.
My 2020 race schedule has begun to take shape, but I’m not going to put much planning into it quite yet. I just want to get through these next couple of months first. Then we’ll see what kind of journey my legs will want take me on.

Great treadmill workout this morning! Two miles of power hills followed by three heart rate miles. The last mile was pretty tough, but my legs held through and I felt great. It’s hard for me at times to get out of the door in the morning. I do much better at evening workouts, but I’m wanting to change that, because I feel so much better when I run in the morning. It really makes a difference for me mentally. I’m hoping to get another run in before my 10 mile race down Emigration Canyon on Saturday. I’m trying to limit myself to around 15 miles a week so — a two mile run tomorrow or Friday morning is doable. —————————————————————— #runfitketo #running #fitness #keto #mediterraneandiet #wellness #mentalhealth #anxiety #ketodiet #ketoweightloss #ketolifestyle #ketosis #run #runner #runformentalhealth #anxiety #fitnesslife #hashimotos #hashimotosdisease #thyroid #thyroidproblems #health #weightlossjourney #mediterraneanketodiet #weightlosstransformation #fitnessgoals —————————————————————— Follow me @runfitketo for more running, fitness & keto motivation!

Ran the Emigration Canyon 10 Miler this morning here in SLC. I signed up for the RUN SLC 15K earlier, but decided to do this one for the downhill miles. I needed them for Mt. Charleston at the end of the month. I hate eating that entry fee, but I don’t want to die in Vegas. I finished in about 2:18 hours — not bad. I was just grateful to be out there running with a back that wasn’t hurting. I’m grateful for the conversation I had with my friend Deborah. We talked about my back and the struggle it was fighting back from injury. She asked a question that I pondered almost the entire run — “What else do you have to prove?” Seriously, what do I? This was my 233rd race. I’ve done over 150 half marathons, nearly a dozen marathons and a few ultras to boot. But, seriously, what do I HAVE to prove? I mean sure, I haven’t done my 💯 Miler yet, but I know I can do it — it’s within the realm of possibility and doability for me. The focus has shifted in my running — it really is more about enjoying the adventure and making sure I grow old with running in my life. This mentality has been hard to accept for me. It’s been hard for me to not compare what I’m doing now to what I’ve been able to do. Who I am now is completely different to who I was 7-8 years ago. I need to remember and accept that. Will I get back there? I don’t know? Most likely not. But, that’s not my focus right now. The run was what I needed mentally, because I pondered a lot on that journey and about Deborah’s conversation. My legs were dead half way through, but I worked hard to be okay with that and not compare it to what I’ve done in the past — I was more than anything trying to simply be PRESENT and enjoy the company. Which I did! —————————————————————— #runfitketo #running #fitness #keto #emigration10miler #wellness #mentalhealth #anxiety #ketodiet #ketoweightloss #ketolifestyle #ketosis #run #runner #runformentalhealth #anxiety #fitnesslife #hashimotos #hashimotosdisease #thyroid #thyroidproblems #health #weightlossjourney #mediterraneanketodiet #weightlosstransformation #fitnessgoals —————————————————————— Follow me @runfitketo for more running, fitness & keto motivation!
