Running 2019: July to December
As you may of remembered I pretty much finalized my first half schedule for 2019. It was pretty easy to do, because I’m going after a few goals — including location races and time goals. But, as it comes to looking ahead to the second half of next year, um, I don’t know?
Seriously.
This is the hardest part of my 2019 running year to plan for — because — I am not 100% what I want to accomplish? I mean, I do, but I don’t. My long term number one goal will always be a 100 mile race until I accomplish it. It’s just the when that I need to figure out.
The only thing I know that I got going for me for next year is two things — one, I don’t want to run anything longer than a 10K between November and December, and two, I want to tackle a few faster half marathons.
With that in mind I came up with the following race calendar for 2019. The only non-faster or canyon half marathons are Pocatello and Antelope Island. But, I want to go hard at DesNews, Nebo, Revel BC and The Haunted Half in SLC. That is why I am surrounding them with a few 5Ks and training runs.
Now, this could change depending on when I want to go hard for the marathons and ultras. But, I have goals for the half marathon distance that I want to hit and I know that my body can’t focus on both. My fastest half marathons came in 2013 when I was only focusing on and running half marathons.
I feel like if I continue to grow on this base, get faster, get proper training and just work hard that this will build me up for a year of marathons and ultras in 2020. Specifically an attempt to tackle my elusive 100 mile race. That feels like a solid plan and goal.
I am noticing a pattern in my running where I am good with ultras for a couple years before going back down to half marathons and shorter distances. I feel like this is a good pattern to follow, especially as I age and face my 40s within the next few years. I really want to hit many of my ultra goals before I hit 40 — so 2020 and half of 2021 will give me a good run in that cycle.
Anyways, that’s a looooong post for another day.
But, let’s get to my proposed race schedule for the last half of 2019. Like I’ve mentioned numerous times already, this is subject to change. And, I’ll post all of the group runs for the Trails & Pavement group a bit later in the month.
Anywho, here’s the schedule …

I feel like that’s a pretty good schedule, don’t you? That gives me a bit of time to rest in November before going into marathon training for 2020. I am thinking about kicking that off with the Ogden Marathon?
We’ll see, that sounds like a great place to start, but stay tuned. I will probably do a mock draft of my 2020 race schedule in the next few weeks — just to plant the seed of the direction I want to take in the next couple of years.
Anyways, what races are you planning on doing in 2019? Are you registered for any races in 2019 already?

So I guess that's my 2019?
So, I realized today that my running season is officially over. Well, okay, it’ll officially be over on Thursday when I go under the knife to fix my peroneal tendon and a bone spur. The surgery will keep my sidelined for a good three months-ish. I say -ish, because I am anticipating that it will take me awhile to get my stamina back, especially considering that I don’t have much stamina as it is right now.
Looking back at 2019 — it sucked. I really should have seen it coming, especially going into year two of a stupid bummed ankle. I wasn’t getting into a needed rhythm and even after seeing a doctor (again) in the early part of the year — there wasn’t much concern about my ankle (PT and ice it …).
I had big plans for 2019 and they just kind of sputtered out quite quickly. I DNS’d (Did Not Start) 20 races, going into the year I had only DNS’d 17 races. So, yeah, I more than doubled that. I don’t want to think about how much money I lost, but I’m happy to say that at least some of those missed races were charity races. But, yeah, I really don’t want to tally those missed race fees.
I will be DNSing at least two more races this upcoming year that conflict with my recovery time. I am bummed I won’t be at the New Year’s Revolution Run (I’ve done it every year since 2011) and the March Madness 10K (I don’t recouping my race fees since it goes to the Bountiful Pantry) — but, even though I think I could MAYBE do the 5K during the March Madness races in March, I don’t know? And, I don’t want to push it until I know where my recovery is around that time.
But, as much as 2019 sucked — it did have it’s highlights. I loved running a number of races with friends — namely Amanda at the Salt Lake City Half Marathon and Jill at both the Revel Mt. Charleston and Big Cottonwood races. I also did really well at the Drop13 Big Cottonwood 5K with a 32 minute 5K. A race I exerted waaaaaay too much during and ended up with pneumonia a week later. But, at least I ran fast! HA!
If we’re going to look at my stats, they’re definitely not my best. But, I’m really trying not to beat myself up over it considering I did them all on a TORN PERONEAL TENDON!!! And, that goes for all of 2018 and a good chunk of 2017 as well. I’m quite proud of that stupidity.
But, as painful and trying as recovery from surgery will be — I’m excited. I’m excited to have the stupid little tendon fixed that’s been giving my running, life and health hell for the past 2.5 years! What’s another 3-4 months on top of that? I am so looking forward to that run where I can finally say — I got my rhythm back. I not only want to make 2020 my year, but I want to make 2021 and beyond the best years yet.

RACE #180: Bountiful Handcart Days Half Marathon; July 21, 2018 (3:49:54) I can’t begin to describe what was going on in my head throughout the day, especially those last few yards. I was trying to process everything going on — while just being in the moment. Sure, this is an end to a goal, but there is so much more to look towards going forward. This race felt like a graduation day moe than a moment of finality or end. I’m moving forward to better things and I can’t be anymore excited! But, throughout the day I’ve just felt an immense amount of gratitude for not just a body that held up for seven years to do this, but for the friendships and experiences I’ve gained in the time has been the true blessing in this all. I felt spoiled and loved by so many throughout the day especially from Amanda, Lizzi, Jill and Trinity. Thank you doesn’t cut it. Oh yeah, the race itself — it was hot. It was miserable. But, it was fun. I had a running posse with me all 13.1 miles. That alone made it my favorite race yet! #race180 #handcartdayshalf #running @southdavisraces @trailsandpavement @joshruns180

RACE #177: Drop13 Big Cottonwood Half Marathon, June 9, 2018 (3:39:28) Words can’t even begin to properly convey my thoughts and feelings of today. I feel a deep sense of gratitude to not only be a runner, but to also be a member of this running community. Over the past seven years since I started this journey I’ve been able to have some amazing experiences. Today probably takes the cake. I might sound like a broken record telling this story, but it’s meant to be shared. I met Lizz a year (and eight days) ago at a luncheon I was speaking at for my alma mater (GO T-BIRDS!). She came to meet me even though she wasn’t an alum of SUU. Just like me, Lizz has anxiety, and for her to do something so out of the ordinary like that was completely out of her comfort zone. But, by a divine guiding hand, she made it to the luncheon and we met. Our paths were meant to cross. A year ago a half marathon — let alone a 5K — was nearly out of realm of possibility. Yet, here we are a year later and Lizz’s “impossible” is now reality. Not only is she now a half marathoner, but she’s lost over 100lbs., ran over 20+ 5Ks and 10Ks and changed herself inside and outside. I couldn’t be any prouder. This race today was just perfect. A big thank you to Joseph Coles for sleepless nights of prep for this race, for Amanda Condie Bjarnson who joined us for some of the difficult miles and kept us sufficiently distracted and the many, many, many of you who stopped to wish Lizz well on her journey. I started my journey by running alone and if I can keep that from happening to others … I will. That was part of the reason I surprised Lizz at the starting line. Plus, I told her I felt partially responsible for getting her into this mess by introducing her to the running world. Again congratulations on this accomplishment Lizz, I have no doubt this journey of yours is inspiring someone out there to change their impossible into reality. Because nothing is impossible and today was proof of that. #race177 #drop13halfmarathon #running @josherwalla @ketowalla @joshruns180

HALF #152: Revel Big Cottonwood Half Marathon; September 8, 2018 (2:56:26) I went into the race with many aspirations for a sub-2:40 finish. But, alas, that wasn’t the case. The first 8 miles were pretty magical and I was on pace for such a finish, but after fighting a chest cold the week prior I ended up throwing up after a nice little cough attack. That upset my stomach just enough to make me nausea to the point where I threw up three more times — including right in front of the finish line in a feeble attempt to get to the medic tent. I spent nearly an hour plus in the medic tent hooked up to an IV and sipping water next to Jill who had some fun cramping going on (she ended up PRing!). It wasn’t the most ideal ending, but I’m okay with it considering my time, my fitness and my experience with Jill and other friends. I’ll be back at it next year. I’m always back. I love this race. #half152 #race185 #runrevel #revelbigcottonwood #running @josherwalla.fit @josherwalla @josherwalla.run

RACE #178: Oquirrh Mountain Half Marathon; June 16, 2018 (2:50:27.2) An unexpected success! I got my sub-three! Janet and I came across at about 2:50.27 even! I couldn’t be happier with the time. The effort was there and it helped that Janet and I talked each other’s ears off. So much better than plugging my headphones in to distract myself. It’s hard to believe I’m two races away from my goal. It feels somewhat surreal. I’ve had my ups and downs, but I feel extremely blessed that my body has held up over the years. ONE. MORE. MONTH. TO. MY. GOAL. #drop13halfmarathon race178 #oquirrhmountainhalf @joshruns180

HALF #150: Run Elevated Half Marathon; August 18, 2018 (2:46:54) Crazy to think this was my 150th half marathon! It really doesn’t feel like I’ve been running that long, but seven years IS along time. I couldn’t have been happier with this race. I came into it worried about cutoffs and my pace. And, I came away not just meeting those goals but having a blast with my friend @amandabjarnson who ran the whole 13.1 with me. Besides coming away with those experiences I’m coming away with a big ‘ol blister on my left foot and one less toe nail. If I didn’t know the cause I would have guessed I contracted the leprosy. Very happy with my 2:46:54 time and I’m looking forward to another great race next week as I tackle the Nebo Half! 1) Handcart Days Half Marathon
As much as I love the Runtastic Events Trilogy Medal, this race medal is BY FAR my favorite medal of 2018. While, I do like the design, the meaning behind this race and the significance behind my journey means so, so much more. This race was a celebration of all of that with so many friends, it’s a moment I will forever remember.
2) Runtastic Events Trilogy Medal
The past couple of Trilogy Medals have been some of my favorite medals throughout my running journey. Not only are they HUGE and HEAVY, but I love that there is meaning behind each one with great design detail. For those not familiar with the Runtastic Trilogy medal, you get this medal for running at least three of their races over 13.1 miles. Totally worth the challenge!
3) Drop13 Big Cottonwood Half Marathon
Not only is this medal my favorite from the times I’ve done this race, but the story and experience means a lot to me. I surprised my friend Lizz at the start line since this was her first half marathon — and I ran the whole 13.1 miles alongside her. To make a long story short, I met Lizz a year prior and helped introduced her to the running world. A world where she’s caught fire! This was a great experience for not just her, but me as well — just being there to witness the moment.
4) Timp Half
I’m a Disneynerd. Always have, always will be. And, this has to be one of my favorite race medals just for the sheer fact that it reminds me of a Mary Blair piece of artwork. Mary Blair did a lot of design for Disneyland and the Walt Disney Company. If you don’t know who she is, look her work up and you’ll agree with my assessment on this medal.
5) Elephant Rock Trail Run
Last year this race’s medal as a rock. A very cool one. This year the race medal was just as cool with some awesome wood and rock work. I’m excited to see what the race comes up with in 2019! I’m sure it won’t disappoint!

I owed Patrick a Dr. Pepper five years ago — I haven’t paid up yet. More because of the lack of opportunity since we live in different ends of the state. I forgot again today — so Patrick PUNISHED me by following me around for a loop and a half playing “Christmas Shoes” on his Bluetooth speakers. But, I think what made it worse was Patrick trying to sing along to it as well. I’m sure this is what hell will be like.

Just like how you end a meal on a sweet note — I ended my 2018 race schedule on one as well. Actually, it was more of a sugar rush. But, if race wasn’t it’d be a failure. It’s nice to now pause for the month to recharge, prepare and focus on what is in front of me for the new year. I got a lot ahead of me, but I’m optimistic, focused and excited for 2019. I have a lot of fun adventures planned! But, this race was fun. Besides the plethora of snacks, the company was even better — even Patrick who followed behind me for a lap and a half playing Christmas Shoes on his Bluetooth speakers. It was just fun to party with so many friends. The running was a tale of two halves. My first two laps were awesome — mainly trying to get away from Patrick and that horrid song. The last two laps I stayed with Lizz. Our third lap was conservative on purpose because we wanted to finish strong. But, that didn’t happen as planned. Lizz pulled a knee muscle and limped to the finish line on the last lap. We were last, but honestly — it didn’t matter. We had tons of fun, which is pretty much the first rule of this race. Do I regret breaking keto and diving into forbidden gluten deliciousness? Yes. I’m going to have a couple fun next days. But, in the moment it was pure enjoyment — especially those Sweet Tooth Fairy cupcakes. Dare I say — they were deliciously moist? Anyways, I had a blast! I’ll be back again, even if I bring my own treats next time. But, oh man, those cupcakes!!! #thebakersdozenhalf #race187 #half154 @josherwalla.run

5 “easy” miles along the Blvd. tonight. I have no training plan for my running in November and December (on purpose), my focus is mainly strength training — so most of my runs are done by feel and desire. I couldn’t pass up a beautiful fall day like today without a run. It was perfect!

I haven’t ventured this far north on Davis Blvd. for a while. I love this view of the temple, especially during autumn. 🍂🍁

FUN FACT: When I bought this bandana some 4-5 years ago, I did so because I liked the design. I had no idea it was a Christian cross bandana. I guess that kind of answers how Mormon I am?

RACE #180: Bountiful Handcart Days Half Marathon
Wow. This is it. This is the last recap of my 180 race goal. I won’t lie, I am still a bit emotional about it all. Not just the completion of the goal, but from the experience on Saturday. It was such a whirlwind of emotions that I’m still processing it.
When I started this journey seven years ago I started here — at the Handcart Days Half Marathon — alone. I didn’t know anyone. I came to the start line alone, ran alone and finished alone. Well, not entirely alone — my sister and brother-in-law showed up at the finish line to cheer me on. So, to say Saturday’s race was a stark difference is a complete understatement.
It’s really hard to put everything into words, because so much of this race came from the heart. It was a fulfillment of a goal — and there were so many running the same race just to be there with me during this moment. That feeling alone was beyond humbling — a feeling of humbling gratitude.
I LOVE THIS SHIRT! Thank you @trinykay for helping put this together for me — IT’S PERFECT! Included on it is the date of my first half marathon and tomorrow’s date — which is my 180th and final race in this 180 running journey. And, of course I couldn’t forget including some very special people who have been a huge part of my journey who have passed on. If they can’t run with me, I’ll run with them. ♥️ #HandcartDaysHalf #Race180 #Running #LiveLikeRobert @joshruns180

There’s a lot of backstory to the race — a lot that was kept from me — so Jill, Amanda, Lizz, Trinity and the rest of the group could surprise me throughout the day. There was a group chat going on pretty much since the first of the month organizing everything from race signs, group pictures and even race shirts for everyone — including my family.
They went over the top. And, it was simply amazing. I just felt so loved throughout the day by so many friends. It couldn’t have been any more perfect.
When I got to the Rec Center we assembled for a group picture at 5:15am so I could do the early start at 5:30am to avoid the heat since I was pushing Reese as well. After a couple of pictures the group then took their jackets and coats off to unveil green race shirts that Trinity made for the occasion.
I was beyond surprised.
A post shared by I’m Josher … (@josherwalla) on Jul 21, 2018 at 3:38pm PDT
After a bunch of selfies and pictures I dashed off to the start line to run with Reese. After a few adjustments we were off and running. And, I had a crew of people running alongside me –many who stuck with me for all 13.1 miles. In no time during my life have I ever felt more like Forest Gump.
Well, I might retract that — I did spent eight years in Special Ed.
But — I’ve never felt so loved and appreciated by everyone. Jill even came all the way down from Boise to be there — including setting up a number of signs along the course with quotes and encouragement. She, Amanda and Lizz put so much effort is setting up the night before — I just can’t be thankful enough for their effort. I really felt so over the top spoiled.
I’m glad that I didn’t go into the race with a time goal because not only were we stopping a lot for pictures, but it was hot. So hot. So, so, so hot. It was already 80 degrees at 5:30am when we started and it just got hotter as the sun rose over the mountains. But, this race was never about time — it was a celebration and moment I wanted to cherish. And, I did.
“The reason we race isn’t so much to beat each other … but to be with each other.” ~ Christopher McDougall I was so overwhelmed with the love and support throughout the race — from start to finish — it was amazing to feel that love. I’m blessed and lucky to be a part of this great running community. #handcartdayshalf #race180 @joshruns180
A post shared by I’m Josher … (@josherwalla) on Jul 21, 2018 at 8:02pm PDT
There were a number of runners who started at 6am who caught up with us around Mile 4-5 and ran with us — namely Russell, Don and Emma. The Hutchings friendship has always meant so much to me and the relationship that Don and Russell have between each other is something I aspire to. Plus, Russell is a kid that inspires me — at age 11 he’s already done over 24 half marathons and a 50 miler. At his age I spent my Saturday mornings eating ice cream while watching cartoons.
Once we got off the Legacy Parkway we made our way back toward the Rec Center — and the heat didn’t relent. I could feel my body just hate life around Mile 8 and I couldn’t stay cool or drink enough water. The heat zapped me. The greatest reprieve at Mile 10 was when a number of us literally stood in the middle of someone’s front lawn sprinklers.
Shortly after the sprinklers we stopped at a Maverik we passed and I grabbed a large Diet Dr. Coke (half part Diet Coke, half part Diet Dr. Pepper) to help cool down. I usually don’t drink soda, but I was craving one sooooooo bad for a couple miles — and it adequately hit the spot.
A post shared by I’m Josher … (@josherwalla) on Jul 21, 2018 at 8:07pm PDT
By Mile 11 a number of other runners who had finished their race were coming back to run with me. It was amazing — Karen, Coach Blu and Lizzi came back. If I was able to grow any semblance of a beard I should have dressed up like Forrest Gump for this race — because that’s how I felt. I felt so, so, so loved.
As I passed the last mile marker — I kinda got silent. It was hard not to reflect on everything. Not just that race and day — but the whole journey. The previous 179 races. You know when people say during near death experiences they have their life flash before their eyes. That’s how I felt.
No, I wasn’t going to die. But, that feeling of completion or finality people must feel in those moments was felt by me. And, I had so many moments flash throughout this journey flash before my eyes. It was pretty overwhelming.
A post shared by JosherDoes Keto (@ketowalla) on Jul 21, 2018 at 8:43pm PDT
Not only that — but, I had my mind heavily on my Grandma, Aunt Diane and Robert Merriman who have passed away after I started this journey. Each one has had a profound influence on not just this journey, but my life. That emotion got deeper as I took the turn along 400 North toward the finish line when I saw that Jill, Amanda and Lizz had made signs with each of their names on it.
Those last few yards toward the finish line were surreal. I tried to just run and take everything in — just soaking in the moment. I’ve never felt so much love as I saw a sea of green cheering me on toward the finish line. It was beyond special.
And, then as I crossed the finish line and through a paper sign my family made for me the journey ended with an appropriate — pie to the face from my mother.
Yes, a pie.
The moment I’ve been working toward for the past seven years — would I expect anything else from my mother? #handcartdayshalf #race180 @joshruns180
A post shared by I’m Josher … (@josherwalla) on Jul 21, 2018 at 8:25pm PDT
She did it to me at my 100th race and once before that — and this won’t be the last either. I fully expect her to do it on my wedding day and probably my funeral as well. But, that’s the kind of relationship I have with my mother.
I made sure I gave her a big messy pie hug — and many others came up for a messy pie hug as well. It was surreal. It was such a whirlwind of emotion as I was just trying to soak it all in. After a group picture at the finish line — I downed a good two gallons of water — and just processed everything. Or at least tried to.
I was so overwhelmed with the sharing of love and emotion from so many people. Many people who have told me how much I inspire them. That’s a very humbling and difficult compliment for me to accept. But, when I started this journey I made that promise with myself and my God that I would share my journey in the hopes that just one person could better their life from my example.
This. I’m not even going to attempt to tag you all! 💚 Thanks for making today so special! #handcartdayshalf #race180 @joshruns180
A post shared by I’m Josher … (@josherwalla) on Jul 21, 2018 at 8:35pm PDT
And, to have so many people tell you that you’ve made a difference in their lives — that’s overwhelmingly humbling. It’s not that easy for me to deal with a direct spotlight upon myself — I’d much rather deflect to something or someone else. But, I knew that that day there was no way I could deflect it.
I’m just so grateful and humbled by it all. And, I know that I’ve probably said that to nauseam — but, I can’t say it enough. I just feel so blessed and lucky to have made so many great friends along this journey. Such a stark difference from seven years ago when I started this journey alone.
So now that this goal is complete — what now?
Well, I’ve been asked that question a lot. And, the answer is basically to keep running. I have a bucket list of running goals I want to work on and do called The Honey Bucket List. I still have a 100 miler to tackle some day. I want to run a sub-two half and sub-30 5K. I want to run the Boston Marathon as well as the Athens Marathon in Greece.
A post shared by JosherDoes Keto (@ketowalla) on Jul 22, 2018 at 9:42am PDT
There are a few other projects I plan to focus on and I really just want to enjoy running and this community to its’ fullest. There’s so much ahead. And, I can’t wait to tackle it.
I’m going to cherish and remember this moment forever. Thanks again for everyone who made Saturday such an amazing day. From the shirts to signs to leis to hugs to pictures to just being there — thank you for it all. I can’t say it enough.
July 21, 2018 will always be a day I cherish.
