Canada’s immigration minister (Sean Fraser) announced the much-awaited launch of the category-based selection for the Express Entry program – a point-based popular route for Indians to gain permanent residency in Canada. A new process to welcome skilled newcomers with work experience in priority jobs as permanent residents in an attempt to meet its labor needs and strengthen its economy.
Category-based selection invitations will focus on candidates who have a strong French language proficiency, or work experience in fields like healthcare, agriculture and agri-food, STEM professions, and trades, such as carpenters, plumbers, and contractors transport.

Trump stood against the upper class. He might define them as: people who live in nice apartments in Manhattan or SF or DC and laugh under their breath if anybody comes from Akron or Tampa. Who eat Thai food and Ethiopian food and anything fusion, think they would gain 200 lbs if they ever stepped in a McDonalds, and won't even speak the name Chick-Fil-A. Who usually go to Ivy League colleges, though Amherst or Berkeley is acceptable if absolutely necessary. Who conspicuously love Broadway (especially Hamilton), LGBT, education, "expertise", mass transit, and foreign anything. They conspicuously hate NASCAR, wrestling, football, "fast food", SUVs, FOX, guns, the South, evangelicals, and reality TV. Who would never get married before age 25 and have cutesy pins about how cats are better than children. Who get jobs in journalism, academia, government, consulting, or anything else with no time-card where you never have to use your hands. Who all have exactly the same political and aesthetic opinions on everything, and think the noblest and most important task imaginable is to gatekeep information in ways that force everyone else to share those opinions too.
(full disclosure: I fit like 2/3 of these descriptors)
Aren't I just describing well-off people? No. Teachers, social workers, grad students, and starving artists may be poor, but can still be upper-class. Pilots, plumbers, and lumber barons are well-off, but not upper-class. Donald Trump is a billionaire, but still recognizably not upper class. The upper class is a cultural phenomenon.
Scott, buddy, pal, I know you have some fatal allergy to any sort of political theory within three degree of separation of Marxism, and also touching any poli sci or sociology textbooks would cause you to burst into flame, but c’mon man. What the hell is the ‘upper’ in ‘upper class’ actually supposed to mean?
#random internet stuff#political theory#ranting#this is unfair in the sense that literally every mainstream American writer who talks about the issue seems to have the same mental block

The Real Estate Conversation
The Real Estate Conversation
There has never been a better time for first home buyers and would-be investors to buy a house in Darwin, according to CoreLogic data. Darwin's declining population is weighing on the property market, Quentin Kilian, chief executive of the REINT, told SCHWARTZWILLIAMS. The Darwin real estate market has bottomed, so local owners should feel less pressure to take the first offer that comes along, says Glenn Grantham, general manager, Raine & Horne Darwin. Elaine Mills speaks to SCHWARTZWILLIAMS about the innovations she has introduced in her business, including employing virtual assistants in the Philippines to do the administration for her property managers. Karl Secondis of One Real Estate, Darwin, has been a successful agent for more than 20 years.
The "negative gearing" of investment properties is not well understood by the general public, and I also tend to think that most residential investment properties in Australia, are not negative geared for taxation purposes. They are purchased to provide positive income, investment, and security for the future. It seems that some of the aged persons over 65, that are not collecting an aged pension, are the ones that own residential investment property. Negatively geared, not on your life. In many locations through-out Australia the capital growth of property is quite low, so owning a rental property that is rented at a loss becomes a liability. Every year, there will be business' that run at a loss, and it would be virtually impossible to identify an "intentional loss for taxation purposes". The ownership of investment properties is with-out doubt, one of the prime sources of "intense jealousy" between various people within the Australian community. This is probably why the issue of "negative gearing" of property has become so intense.
Every year Forbes publishes the list of the richest people in Australia. 2009 showed a drop in the number of billionaires (we're down to 9) but despite the changes in the economy these entrepreneurs proved that fortunes can still be made. Almost everyone on the list started out with a small venture that eventually flourished with dedication and a mind-set to defy the odds against making it big. They are an inspiration to Australians everywhere with dreams of success to hold their course and just keep going. 590 million at the age of 84? Mr. Alter landed on the shore in 1949 right out of Poland and hurried up to get a job, 2 jobs as a matter of fact. A bit later he bought a couple shops and a bank near Melbourne. Yes, that's right - a bank!
Currently his son, Sam runs his Pacific Shopping Centers and manages his portfolio of prime retail properties in the vicinity of Melbourne and Adelaide. This wealthy Oz tycoon likes things that give you a buzz. He started out on the path to fortune as a coffee farmer but really made himself known with the Rosemount Estates winery. In 2001 he sold off the entire kit and caboodle for cash and stock to Southcorp. He turned around in 2003 and flipped the stick to Foster's as a means to buy Hamilton Island. He has taken the cup in the Hobart-to-Sydney race 4 consecutive years with his yacht, Wild Oats.
He keeps himself occupied with exporting his name-brand wines to the U.S. This sister and brother team was fortunate to have a father that discovered some tremendous iron ore deposits in Western Australia. Rio Tinto's Hamersley mine provides them and other family members annual royalties. Wright's primary concern is his Voyager Estate winery. Rumor has it that as a teenager Mr. Van Lieshout left school to work at a job unloading bananas. After moving from his native Holland he eventually started up the Super A-Mart furniture chain which he sold in 2006. Currently he is in the market for Brisbane real estate. Len Buckeridge is synonymous with BGC Group, a major home builder in Western Australia.
200 million private port. 600 million. He stirred up some scandalous talk when accused of making payments in secret to a Queensland politician. He denies the bad news. Mr. Harvey started dropped out of agricultural college to sell vacuum cleaners door-to-door. He later co-founded Harvey Norman, the electronics retailer. The CEO is his wife, Katie Page. He is a horse man, with a stake in the thoroughbred auction house, Magic Millions. 200 million. The return on the flagship fund has been 11% annualized. Mr. Perron sold handkerchief boxes after dropping out of school and later tried to make a go as a plumber. Australian Investment Properties didn't really make it big until being gifted with a Toyota franchise from a former boss. He established dealerships all over Western Australia and now invests in real estate.
Fox is a former pro in the Australian Football League and got started on his way to wealth by selling soft drinks from a truck. He founded the largest logistics company in Australia: Linfox. He enjoys classic cars - has 130 of them. Stokes is the primary dealer of Caterpillar equipment in Australia. He adds to his fortune by his stake in media group, Seven Network. Lately he has been attempting to grab up Perth's Western Australia Newspapers. Originally from South Africa, Neilson set up Platinum Asset Management in 1993 with George Soros backing him. 500 million. His next plan is to open a contemporary Chinese art museum. Along with other family members she benefits from her late father's mining assets: Rio Tinto's Hamersley Basin Iron Ore Mine.
Rinehart also owns a direct stake in the family company Hancock Prospecting. Pratt was at one time a McKinsey consultant and ran Visy Industries U.S. 20 years. He is now co-chairs the packaging kingdom with his mother, owned in entirety by his family. He co-owns the global operations with his two sisters. 1 richest person in 2008. Sadly he lost his position due to decreasing iron ore demand which affected shares of his Fortescue Metals Group. A Chinese steel group recently took ownership of part of the company. There was a bit of scandal around the deal which he denies.
Gandel owns prime real estate - lots of it, including half of Melbourne's Chadstone shopping mall and a stake in a trust that owns the other half. Rumor has it that his private home is the priciest in Melbourne. Known affectionately as "High-Rise-Harry", he is Oz's apartment building tycoon. He was born in China to Russian parents and started his career as a taxi driver. He now owns hundreds of flats in Sydney and North Shore. Lowy is another one of the country's real estate moguls as well as the president of the Football Federation Australia. He is a Czech immigrant and founded the Westfield Group real estate company. 3 billion and that's not shabby. Let's hear it for the young guy! What has this dude not done? Packer is heir to his late father's media group, Publishing & Broadcasting. 300 million and has shares in Consolidated Media and gaming company, Crown. He also has a joint venture going with Hong Kong's Lawrence Ho.
Casual Lunch, 2 p.m. Perhaps inspired by Melbourne, whose narrow lanes are known for their hip cafes and boutiques, Adelaide’s side streets are having something of a moment. Experience the vibe on Ebenezer Place, which is lined with an eclectic mix of businesses; last year, a popular suburban establishment, Parwana Afghan Kitchen, opened a sister restaurant, the pint-size Kutchi Deli Parwana. 9.50 at 1.36 Australian to the U.S. On a sunny day, order a few dishes and take a seat on the sidewalk to soak in the atmosphere. 2. Arty Afternoon, 3 p.m. The Art Gallery of South Australia houses an expansive collection in its stately building on Adelaide’s North Terrace, a leafy boulevard lined with grand monuments and University of Adelaide buildings.
Inside, admission is free to most exhibitions, and you can browse Australian, Aboriginal and European art, and even a small Islamic gallery. If you’re in town early in the month, you’re in luck: The museum stays open until 9 p.m. First Fridays, with a festive program of live music, guided tours and talks with featured artists in the evening. 3. Pedestrian Promenade, 5 p.m. Adelaide’s main promenade is Rundle Mall, a long pedestrianized artery, home to the city’s best shopping and restaurants. 4. Handmade Haven, 7 p.m. For a souvenir that reflects Adelaide’s creative spirit, pop into Urban Cow Studio.
Its rooms have creaky floorboards splattered with paint and are cluttered with jewelry, housewares, canvases and more, all handmade in Adelaide by more than 150 local artists and artisans. Look out for funky Elodie Barker ceramic mugs (44 dollars each) and hand-poured soy candles in coconut, espresso and mango papaya scents (30 dollars for medium, 40 dollars for large sizes), or browse exhibits by local artists. The location also houses the Howling Owl cafe and the comedy club Rhino Room. 5. Out of Africa, 8 p.m. One of the city’s top chefs is an import from South Africa, and since he opened Africola in November 2014, Duncan Welgemoed has been bringing the flavors of his home country to Australia. Africola’s interiors are a nod to the shebeens (taverns) of the townships, with colorful murals, repurposed Coke bottles (here doubling as chile-sauce dispensers), bright fabrics and plastic menus illustrated with Mandela motifs.
A Sydney real estate agent will face a string of charges in court next month after she allegedly stole a credit card from a house inspection. The woman, 38, allegedly took the victim's bank card when showing potential buyers a property in the northern beaches suburb of Dee Why on Saturday. Police will allege she asked the current occupant of the residence to vacate the premises during the hour-long open inspection. 3,200 in a frenzied shopping spree in the area. That night the man was contacted by his bank to advise him what appeared to be suspicious recent activity on his credit card,' Northern Beaches acting crime manager Guy Magee told The Manly Daily. The man was told there had been a series of tip-and-go purchases on his credit card in a period of a few hours at retail outlets in Dee Why, Collaroy, Narrabeen and Avalon.
Australia’s resources boom has seen all eyes turn to Perth in recent years - and the Western Australian capital city is known as a dynamic, metropolitan area with a population of some 1.7 million people. As the nation’s fastest-growing state, WA is focused on development - and nowhere in the state is as focused on business, culture and arts and entertainment than Perth. Real estate in Perth - where to start? When it comes to Perth real estate, there are many factors to consider - and with so many suburbs to choose from, you might want to begin by choosing the lifestyle factors that are most important to you.
If you’re keen to get out and about on WA’s famous beaches, you might want to start your Perth property search in Cottesloe. As one of the city’s most prestigious suburbs, you’ll find a great mix of housing types here - offering close access to more than three kilometres of stunning beaches. There are plenty of amenities to be found along the waterfront - including numerous restaurants and cafes. Alternatively, outdoor enthusiasts might want to investigate the Perth real estate on offer at City Beach, which is situated 11 kilometres from the Perth CBD. Boasting plenty of natural bushland and excellent sports facilities at City Beach Oval, City Beach is part of the Town of Cambridge and has plenty to offer residents who love to be active.
A waterfront alternative to Perth’s main beaches are its riverside suburbs and Attadale - which is located nine kilometres from the CBD on the south bank of the Swan River - is particularly appealing. Attadale offers a pleasant blend of the best the city has to offer - Perth property dwellers here enjoy views of the CBD, as well as ample riverfront - which includes cycling paths and walkways. While one and two-storey family homes are the norm here, units and villas can also be found - ensuring there is something for everyone. Whether you’ve decided to relocate to Perth or are simply looking to make an investment, the agents at Ray White can help. With more than a century of experience under our belts, we are well-equipped to help you through every stage of the process, whether you are buying, selling, renting or investing. We’re responsible for approximately ten per cent of all real estate transactions in Australia - and you can rest assured that our commitment to our customers is evident in everything we do.
Owning property has long been the Australian dream and regarded as a pretty safe investment. But a number of Australians have been hit by criminals who have sold their house through simple identity fraud, then pocketed the profits and disappeared. Recently a house in the Canberra suburb of Macgregor was offloaded through a South African-based real estate scam without the owner’s knowledge. The owners, who are based overseas, only discovered their investment property had been sold when they contacted their property manager to query why rental money hadn’t been paid. Canberra Police are now investigating a series of exchanges which resulted in the fraud and the disbursement of funds.
“The absence of the home owner and an inability to personally review documentation which may be fraudulent provides leverage for the scammers to operate. Police would urge home owners residing overseas or travelling overseas for a lengthy period to establish robust protocols which protect and confirm their bona fides,” ACT Police said in a statement. In late July a 46-year-old man was charged with fraud after allegedly falsifying his identity to sell two Gold Coast homes which didn’t belong to him. Earlier this year NSW Fair Trading Minister Stuart Ayres issued a warning to property owners and real estate agents about scam emails being sent to landlords living overseas.
“The scam email advises agencies of managing landlords to forward forms to them to complete and return to the scammer,” he said. A run of these types of scams resulted in a group of Western Australian property owners being defrauded of their properties. 240,000 unit at Perth suburb Mandurah. Allegedly the trio changed the owner’s contact details and subsequently made a request to sell the property. An offer was received for the property but the scam unravelled when a contract was sent to the rightful owner - luckily by mail, and before deeds or funds had changed hands. Cutajar said there was a real risk in Australia’s property market of scammers stealing their title and selling or mortgaging their property without their knowledge.
He said it all starts with identity fraud. The scammer acquires fake birth certificates, Medicare cards, passports and drivers licences in the home owner’s name. Cutajar said the forms of identification only need to look real because a real estate agent or solicitor are only going to sight the documents. Discovering your house has been fraudulently sold to an innocent buyer makes recourse complicated and difficult. “In almost all of the cases it has resulted in litigation,” Cutajar said. “In some instances they may go against the owner, in some instances they may go against the real estate agent that sold it.

Why do the intelligentsia denigrate President Reagan although he ended the Cold War and triggered the dissolution of the USSR?
The difference between Reagan and Trump is one of degree and not of kind. Reagan set loose the first pebbles of Deplorables that have become the Trump Deplorable avalanche
COMMENTARY:
Personally, I voted for him knowing that he believed body and soul in Supply Economics because it was so kind to the members of his country club. On that basis, he was a totally useful idiot for the Deplorables in California politics whose careers profited considerably by Joe McCarthy, Roy Cohn and the Black Lists. My dad was working for Ridgeway during the Army-McCarthy hearings and I have no fond memories of Joe McCarthy or Roy Cohn or the people like William F. Buckley, Jr., who admired McCarthy and considered him a National Hero and True Patriot. I define “Deplorables” by those metrics and we now know how the world works when the Deplorables are in charge: No Wall, No Christmas.
Well, these people have been in the Republican party since before I started voting and they have been nothing but ugly my entire life. You ought to be able to connect the dot’s between Tucker Carlson and Richard Spencer directly. I mean, come on. Rush Limbaugh and Laura Ingraham just called off Christmas in DC because they are the cool kids, the Bret Kavanaugh crowd of 1955, Pat Buchanan and George Lincoln Rockwell and 1972. Pat Buchanan and Nixon and 1992, “Pitch Fork Pat” Buchanan and Grover Norquist. These people have been actively sabotaging Nixon’s Affirmative Action agenda since Reagan came to town. These are the people who have been fight the war to save Christmas longer than Birtherism and now, they pull the plug.
But, as they say, Politics makes for strange bedfellows. I voted for Nixon before I went to Vietnam and I voted for him after I got back and, as a veteran in dubious battle, he, Nixon, over-delivered on my expectations. Nixon is why there is no Soviet Union, today, and China is a player in Marx’s version of Capitalism, and mine, for that matter, but, for the orthodox Marxists, it’s engaged in heresy that Nixon planted while I was in Vietnam.
So, I voted Republican on general principles. I’m a hard-wired, born, bred and weaned an Eisenhower Republican, and, as a Hoosier, a Will Rogers FDR Republican, like Dick Lugar. Progressive, eyes on the horizon and distinct from the Dan Burton Copperhead Republicans that are the Hoosier tribe of Deplorables. In Indiana, Dick Lugar Republicans and Lee Hamilton Democrats got the roads built and the schools providing quality education tied into the land grant colleges and universities that sound very Socialist to day and the Dan Burton Republicans stood, like William F. Buckley, athwart the wave of history, shouting “Stop!” That’s why I call Buckley the Patriarch of the modern Deplorable.
So, I was voting Deplorable because I’m not a Democrat and I don’t understand their thinking. I live in DC, where everything that works at all works because the Democrats in Congress and the District are able to keep it running in spite of the Deplorables in Congress and, to a far lesser degree, in the District, dedicated to fucking up anything that requires the white Deplorables in town from paying for the services they receive, so I am a registered Democrat so I can vote in the primaries. Virtually every problem Mayor Bowser faces is a direct result of the obstructionism of Deplorables like Mitch McConnell and Paul Ryan, the people who can’t figure out some way to make it clear to the Deplorable who convinced Trump to pull the plug on Christmas that Trump’s promise for the Wall is total bullshit at virtually any level of human self-organization and inquiry. It’s Newt Gingrich’s “Leadership by Tantrum” politcs as national policy.
These are very stupid people. I mean, it goes way beyond “stuck on stupid”. I mean, going back to Phyllis Schlafley’s obstruction of the ERA, these people have been pulling the plug on Christmas in the name of saving Christmas since Joe McCarthy inspired William F. Buckley to create a farm system for aspiring Deplorables that has produced Rush Limbaugh, Laura Ingraham, Rich Lowry and Tucker Carlson so they could grab Trump by the balls and force him to pull the plug on Christmas.
Now, is that collusion or conspiracy or what? I don’t know, but that’s the shit Reagan brought to town with him and gave Pat Buchanan and Roger Stone a second bite at the apple and they haven’t missed a meal, since.
Nixon ended the Cold War in Vietnam: Reagan was there to facilitate Gorbachen pulling the plug on the Soviet Union and joining out side. Reagan should have shared a Nobel Prize with Gorbachev but he was betrayed by Donald T. Regan, who exploited the Alzheimer’s that was far more advanced than anyone could imagine. Edmund Morris captured it by inference with his fictionalization of blank spots in Reagan’s oral history. The assassination probably accelerated the process, but I suspect no one noticed because he was a martini a day man and the effects of the gin over time resembles late stage Alzheimers. The Juniper berries so something visually that becomes progressively introverted. As a bartender, I used to watch it happen in gin drinkers: they’s sit and stare towards the end on the night and you had to sort of wake them up so they could return to the present. That’s what it sounded like was going on between Reagan and Morris. Regan noticed this same phenomena and exploited it to run his own agenda out of the Oval Office, until Nancy saw it for herself and fired his ass just like Melania fired the Recardel women. Recardel is part of the Deplorable elements in the GOP Deep State. Her agenda is an element of Regan’s agenda now associated with the friends of the Russian enemies of Putin in the Deplorable leadershp of the GOP Deep State.
The thing Charley Sykes doesn’t seem to understand is that he’s a career Deplorable: Trump is a clone of Reagan, politically, only not nearly so intellectual. Reagan’s “New Federalism” was actually a useful reform based on his experience as a Governor: it was never financed. I may have coined the phrase “unfunded mandate” as the reality of Reaganomics began to emerge in the economy and that, at a very fundmental level, Reagan didn’t fully understand his own program. As a capitalist nation, it was easy to fix and implement, but, as capitalism is defined by the Deplorables, any public investment that didn’t directly benefit the members of Mar-a-Lago is a non-starter. And that’s besides the fact Reagan had everything he needed to put a permanent colony on the moon by 2001, just like the movie, but immediately began dismantling the federal apparatus he needed to implement his New Federalism and return to the Moon. The Soviets stayed in space and we have benefited from that, but people like Charley Sykes and the editorial board of the National Review and Weekly Standard have been pulling the plug on space in the name of growing up Deplorable.
So, I had been around Deplorables during the 60s as a fraternity member. The argument can be made that I am a Deplorable, because. like Rush Limbaugh, I’m as big a bigot as Woodrow Wilson. Unlike Limpdick, who considers white supremacy as a divine right, while I am ashamed of it and do what I can to mitigate my moral rot.
But, until they got here, it was impossible to anticpate the pure emotional density of their collective racism. In the 70’s, DC was the most racially mellow city in America, for a bunch of reasons. The only bigots of any consequence in DC was the Nixon Plumbers, good old Pat Buchanan, a native white bigot who misses the good old days before Martin Luther King and a whte boy could get a little rowdy in a Bret Kavanaugh kind of way and leave the cops to deal with the Democrats.
As an Eisenhower Republican, Deplorables fall into the catagory of“strange bedfellows” . I quit voting Republican in 1988 when it clear that the Deplorables were determined to pack the courts with Fascists, beginning with Scalia and running through Kavanaugh.
But, when I voted for Reagan, the Democrats were out of ideas, but all they had to do was to continue to implement the Nixon-Moynihan-Carter “Affirmative Action” agenda and we would now have a permanent United Nations colony on the moon and not be fucking around with some asshole alt-right wet dream of a Berlin Wall south of El Paso to go with their Prison-Industrial Complex that’s a big money maker for Jeff Session’s patrons. The Wall is a typical Deplorable piece of shit idea to go along with the War on Drugs, the invasion of Iraq, Trumpcare and the 2017 Tax Reform bill that has begun to snuff out the Bull Market. All Reagan had to do was to double down on Affirmative Action. The introduction of electronic trading and the explosion of the internet would have created a Reagan Economic Miracle 4 to five times greater, globally, than the parasitic mechanisms of Supply Side Economics ever contemplated, much less totally undelivered.
I would say that the intelligensia got it about right regarding Reagan: Trump is just a logical progression of who and what Reagan represented, going in. All in all, Reagan ended up being better than going in, but, if either Carter or Bush the Elder had been reelected, a moon colony would be yesterday’s news. Reagan had absolutely no vision for a horizon that included space: he was lost doing color commentary by telegraph.

How long does car insurance process take for collision?
So my mother was involved in a collision several days ago and actually hit a police car on the highway. Her car has some serious damage and had to be towed. Now we're left wondering how long it will take before the insurance company determines whether it's totaled or fixable. It's an '09 Nissan Sentra and the passenger side airbag went off, the front passenger door's damaged, and the front right tire looked to show some axle damage. She was definitely at-fault but the the officer was kind enough not to cite her since she lost control of the car. Now we're left wondering how long it will take before the insurance company notifies us what they've decided. I was informed an appraiser went to look at the car two days ago though. Any comments on what the process will be like from now on? Thanks.""

Car insurance problems?!?
So I've had my license since I was 18 and now I'm 21, my boyfriend has always just let me use vehicles that he would give me that are registered in his name and on his insurance and I already know someone is going to point out its a bad idea I don't have my own vehicle, we have been together 5 years and haven't had a problem, but recently when I was driving my truck, registered and insured by him, some senile old woman pulled out around 8 feet in front of me and stopped right in the middle of the road so her whole car was right in my lane and the back end of her car was still sort of on the road she was pulling out of, I slammed on my breaks and when I realized I wasn't stopping I turned my wheel as hard as I could so I didn't hit her and I ended up just catching the end of her car and totalled mine by hitting the stop sign and about 4 trees on the road she was coming out of because of the fact that I was driving my boyfriend's insured vehicle and me and him live together, his insurance automatically added me to his policy which caused it to sky rocket from $190/mo. to over $400/mo. Can a landlord require me to carry renter's insurance?
I didn't hear about this until after I filled out a rental application. Evidently, I am required to have renter's insurance before I move in. In view of the fact that I have almost nothing of value, renter's insurance seems pointless to me, even if it is cheap. This has been more common in the last few years. Beginning about 10 years ago, landlords started this practice of requiring renter's insurance. IMHO, it's just a way of reducing the insurance costs for the landlord.""

What is the best life insurance to get BEFORE melanoma diagnosis?
I am 99% sure I have melanoma on my leg. Have apt soon to get this confirmed and staged and start the process. I am a nurse, I know the process, and know the outcome can be one of many. I do not currently have any life insurance, never have. I have 2 small children and it is JUST me and then, no close friends, no family. Worst case scenario, if I only have a short time to live, what would be the best LIFE insurance I can get before getting this diagnosis? I would need something in which they could not cancel me if I am diagnosed with cancer within days of purchasing a premium. Today is May 11th, I should have my diagnosis by May 29th. I would like the biggest policy at the most affordable rate (I don't make as much money as you would think), but its also important that I get the fewest stipulations. By the way, I hate to admit it, but I am a smoker. I quit from 2009 to late 2010, but then started up again when I started RN school (am an LPN now, graduate from RN school in 3 weeks). Any solid advice would be appreciated. In laymens terms please.""
Why is my home insurance quote so high?
I am buying a home next month and have been shopping for home insurance. The cheapest premium I've been quoted is 1,800/year. I have done research and it seems most people pay 600-1000/year. I have never owned a home (so no claims) and I have never used my renters insurance to file a claim. I'm 26 with a 710 credit score. The home is 2300sqft and I am asking for 250,000 in coverage. I even raised the deductibles to see if that would lower it, which it didn't really make a huge difference. Any ideas?""
Isn't it time the insurance companies stopped ripping us off?
Just how annoyed am I... I've been unemployed for 4 months and receive income based job-seekers allowance,we don't have enough to live on and finding a job seems harder than ever just now.My car had an engine problem and both the Tax and M.O.T had run out, with so little money coming in I thought it best to do without the car until I get working again so I scrapped it.I called my insurer to freeze my policy and was told that I could only freeze it for 30 days and would still have to pay the monthly 20, then I would have to cancel if I didn't get another car by the end of the 30 days, cancelling will cost me 90. What the hell, how am I supposed to find the money and isn't it time these greedy companies were asked to explain why they need to charge ridiculous amounts of money for doing nothing other than posting a letter, they also charge 35 to change the policy onto another car which I find a bit hard to swallow. Why though, why do they have to charge so much in these hard economic times""

Question about SR22 insurance in NJ?
My live in fiance just got a DWI. I'm trying to plan ahead regarding the car insurance situation and I was wondering.....Currently he is a driver on my policy. If he gets his own policy and I keep the policy I currently have, are MY rates going to go sky high also? Am I just better off joining the assigned risk pool with him? Also, I know that a DWI is 9 insurance points for 3 years. Does that mean after 3 years they will be gone? Does the 3 years start when the SR22 is filed or does it start on the date of the DWI conviction?""
A few questions about health insurance (recent college grad still on parent's insurance)?
I asked a similar question yesterday but realized I was a bit vague. So, here's my situation. I am a recent college grad working a job that does not offer me health insurance, and I receive excellent coverage under my parent's plan. I recently went to a job interview for a position that offers insurance, but I would have to pay a pretty large chunk of change for it monthly ($500+, which is a lot if you're working an entry-level position), and the coverage isn't nearly as good as my current plan. (For example, I currently pay $3 for a three month supply of my prescription. The new plan would charge me $30-90 for the same amount pills). I saw a clause in the Affordable Health Care Act that said I would only be able to do this after January 1st, 2014....I really wish this went into effect in 2013 instead! So, my questions are: Can I opt out of this insurance and remain on their plan? If I were to take this job and the insurance plan, would I be able to re-enroll under their plan if I stopped working at this place and worked at a place that didn't offer insurance? (I'm under 26, and my family's plan covers both my parents and another sibling)""

Wrestling with Vernacular Print
By Anthony Easton
Wrestling showcard from Hatch Show Print. Photo courtesy of the author.
I spent most of this month throughout the American South. It included a stop in Nashville. I write about, and love country music of all varieties, and so going to the Country Music Hall of Fame was a must. The Hall of Fame includes Hatch Show Print, and for an extra twelve dollars, you can have a tour of the print shop.
Hatch has been around for more than a hundred years. It is still a going concern, printing posters for clients, large and small. It’s also surprisingly affordable. The smallest run is 100 prints, maximum three colours, for about 400 dollars. The tradition of a jobbing print shop is something Hatch exemplifies. Hatch argues for a continued tradition of hand printing, and that they are doing work now that is similar to work they were doing a century ago. Being in the Hall of Fame, and even how they make prints, suggests a more rarified atmosphere. This might not be the case.
They still make gig posters for most of the big acts that come through Nashville, and they make posters for clients ranging from fried chicken restaurants to politicians. The posters they make have a continuity of aesthetics, and a form that is familiar. Walking around Broadway, the tourist neighbourhood of Nashville, Hatch prints are framed in most of the honky tonks and bbq joints. The fonts, photo-reproductions, and a retro style from the 1950s is immediately recognizable. They are made with care, and have a gorgeous, hand-hewn look. But, we cannot argue that they are making museum pieces, and that the hand-hewn look continues the tradition, but the look often does not move past the 1950s. Traditions renew, but these seem a deliberate simulacra of a historical form. The posters they make are intended as collector’s pieces, hocked at merch tables. The fried chicken restaurants are Kentucky Fried Chicken more than the small shacks dotting East Nashville. The posters of politicians are as likely to be Anderson Cooper than Roy Acuff, a ready symbol for the representation occurring over the real.
Elect Roy Acuff Governor Poster (reproduction), Hatch Show Print, 13 1/2" x 21 1/2". Image found on the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum online store.
The tension between the local and the international, or between actual Nashville and the idea of Nashville, can be seen in their Roy Acuff posters. Acuff was a country music star from the 1930s to the 1950s. When he attempted to run for governor, he commissioned a poster from Hatch Print. Those printings kept the company in business. The failure of Acuff’s campaigns were successes for the print shop. It is a ready metaphor for Nashville (or at least Music Row) being thought of as a one industry town. It didn’t matter much if Acuff was successful as a politician or a musician, as long as he was commissioning work from Hatch. Commissioned work required a constant churning, it was work that rested on both an immediacy and an ephemerality, literally a business model that thought of itself as trash. The print shop tour told stories of old printing blocks being used for drawers, that the hand-carved blocks were repurposed after having lost their use.
When Hatch moved from Broadway to the Hall of Fame, a model which rested on this churn of ephemeral product ended. It was replaced with a model which prioritized making the ephemeral archival. So, they would break apart the shelves, returning the blocks to printing, and by extension prioritizing a historical form. For example, when a concert poster would be discarded after a show, now it was carefully framed. This move to an archival understanding, is useful—a gorgeous print of FDR from his first presidential run is now reprinted. I am glad that we have that FDR form, but I am conflicted in the ongoing problem of the ephemeral.
It would also talk with some amount of shame, about how in the 1970s, the shop would print wrestling posters for regional promotions. But, those posters are sold in the gift shop, so the shame cannot be that deep. I am not quite arguing against preserving that which has been thought to be disposable, but recognizing that a tension exists in this recreation of historical forms. Buying a twelve dollar reproduction of a 1970s poster, in one way helps Hatch keep printing, but they print material that is either historic, or retains enough of the aura of the hand printed that an authenticity loop retains like a perpetual motion machine. It begs the question: How does Hatch prevent doing museum work in a literal museum?
The problem of this authenticity loop comes not only from the product, but from the material culture in which they are produced. The machines at the Hatch Show Print are at a minimum fifty years old. They have to be cared for, and one of the ways to care for them, is to make sure that they continue to be used, otherwise they will decay. But in this act of preserving, and renewing, means de facto, that they are historical work. It is one of the central paradoxes of contemporary craft, imbued with a century of modernism. Looking at Hatch, one is confronted by the problems of preservation, of the cult of the new, of the difference between making work for jobs and making work for art, but also, about how to keep traditions and tools alive. It is a vexed place.
The wrestling posters is a good example of this vexation, or the posters they make of clowns. These are beautiful posters—well designed, and carefully thought out. But, the rings of wrestlers and circuses are intended to be torn down, to move on a circuit from one small city to another. I don’t want to dispute the nature of these posters, to take anything away from Hatch, or other legacy printers. I think that the nature of jobbing work means you take the clients you take in order to preserve something that is worth preserving. The work-a-day, intensely practical nature of these histories is not preserved when they are formally aestheticised. This is not the collection of folk work, and it is not the curating of ready mades—it is making a new product.
But it is a product whose creation depends on a historical memory of people who are dying or close to dead. But, it is not a rarefied form either. No matter how highly aestheticized the new posters coming out of these places are, they still advertise concerts, and fried chicken, and new records. But, in order to make these new posters, they also reprint old posters. To commission a “new” poster from Hatch, is to commission not only the use of historical machines, but the cultural heritage of these old machines. After almost a century of arguing over Benjamin’s “The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction,” the weight of the aura here depends on the refusal of the mechanical. But, the power of that refusal occurs with the ubiquity of digital forms. The tension between the ongoing problems of that which is saved and that which is discarded is a central problem of how we remember that which we reproduce.
Thinking about this, I wonder if I am being a bit of a hypocrite. Not because I bought the posters, not because I was profoundly happy in that space, not because I think that Hatch should be preserved, and vernacular history must be kept. I collected ephemera on my trip for a friend who is a graphic designer—and the ephemera I chose were mostly pricey examples of well-considered, expensive, slightly blank work. Work whose design was foregrounded as art, and not merely as a function of craft. I wonder what happens if we think of writers and designers more like plumbers or welders, if we will retain that ephemeral sense by refusing to be precious about form.
Sometimes when I walk around Hamilton, considering how to make these forms less precious, I wonder what we will keep. Not what we will find beautiful, but what will maintain the sheen of aesthetics after the use function seeps out. What does craft look like in the digital age? Part of the reason Hatch continues to function is because people buy into the idea that the hand-made is more genuine, more real, than the digital realm. It is the place where aesthetics has a moral component. It is the reason why high-end coffee shop staff wear Carhartt aprons, one of the reasons for the farm-to-table movement, why an international chain like KFC thinks it can sell a local product (Nashville Hot Chicken) to local people using local methods (the poster but also how this chicken is made), when it is not local (this has existed for a long time, though--see the Colonel).
Immortal Kombat 5 Poster, www.alpha-1wrestling.com
Hamilton has a wrestling league. The posters are printed full colour on printer paper, and taped to light standards around town, about a month before the shows. The shows are held at halls and high school auditoriums, just as they were in the 70s. The posters are made in Photoshop, and I often see them curled in the wind, or rain-soaked to the point of illegibility. They are garish, with bright colours, odd type choices, crowded with people, sometimes difficult to read. I wonder what will happen in the next few decades, to make them in good taste. Hatch is important because it preserves blue-collar aesthetics. But, that preserving requires a significant staff and capital outlay. It even did when they were producing the original posters. Alpha-1 posters require less outlay. the shift to digital forms and digital aesthetics means it can be done not in a formal shop, but by one person, in their bedroom. The working class aesthetic has gotten more intimate, and smaller.
But that doesn’t mean that regional wrestling in Tennessee, and Alpha-1 wrestling in Hamilton do not need to have their own space, their own aesthetic, and their own histories. The presence of Hatch, should not be in opposition to a more digitized aesthetic, but a recognition of the tension between ephemerality and institutional memory; between the desire to preserve, and the refusal to allow this preserving to be nostalgia for nostalgia’s sake.
That tension might be a productive one, and and this set of questions needs to be carefully considered. I will do this considering under the watchful eye of my two wrestling posters—one taken from a light post near Barton, and one bought for 20 dollars at the end of that Hatch tour.
