y'all i know kacchan dying like that must have been traumatizing for the bkdk shippers, but like.... he also died in the gayest way humanly possible.... like i can't even imagine going through that bc on one hand it's like my special boy is dead, but on the other he was so love interest coded, shiggy killed him specifically bc of izuku's intense feelings about him, the fucking yearning for izuku as he died, and then the reveal he carries the little all might card he got with izuku around with him like. i cannot stress enough just how gay his death was. like i just know the shippers had to be a little conflicted
#we won but at what fucking cOST#bkdk#bakudeku#if anyone was around during that time i'd love to hear about it#bc to me it's like the most damning bakudeku evidence ever#just bc of how typical superhero tropes go like.... the villain using the love interest against the mc is such a staple of the genre#and that plot point being given to katsuki is NUTTY it's LIKE WHAT#AND THE FUCKING ALL MIGHT CARD THING TOO HE JUST HAS THAT ON HIM CASUALLY LSJDKLSDJFSD KATSUKI#like ever heard the phrase carrying a torch for someone#that's katsuki and the card

i have been cooking an over-complicated roleswap au for. a VERY long time
#mix of tristamp/trimax where i cherry-pick my favorite plot points designs and characters to create the ultimate mess of an au#just how i like it#unfortunately ‘group of dysfunctional shitheads find themselves having to collaborate’ is one of my fav tropes of all time#it’s not a 1:1 roleswap#more of a. narrative role swap? place/purpose in the story moreso than actions#some are more straight-forward#others are based on vibes#knives and vash easy. legato and meryl easy. elendira and milly is more hand-wavy but it makes sense i swear#i asked myself “what would happen if they were in this scenario? how would it change if a diff personality handled it?#and how they were shaped differently by the world due to the slight shift in story#it’s a lot of fun! i’m enjoying planning it. will i ever write it? who knows!!#‘what are the ships’ ‘yes.’#you’ve heard of polygun now get ready for polygung#trigun#trigun stampede#trigun maximum#charlie’s art#millions knives#elendira the crimsonnail#legato bluesummers#livio the double fang#razlo the tri punisher of death#swap au#roleswap au#designs

im a nie hauisang chief cultivator believer but i have au worms
hanguang jun becomes chief cultivator, many benefactors of jin guangyao see lwj as the guy that ruined everything, which results in the occasional attempt on his life, mostly by people too stupid to realize how out of their depth they are
cue wei ying with his little fledgling core and demonic cultivation taking it upon himself to be lwj's bodyguard. lwj sees no issue in this- if wwx is determined to stick by his side, that only makes it easier for lwj to keep an eye on him, and protect him in turn.
it's mostly goofy and fun until an actual threat appears, and wwx doesn't understand why lwj is suddenly very against the whole bodyguard thing. this almost certainly results in lwj terrified that wwx is going to die again, and BAMF wwx using his now decently strong core and maybe a little bit of demonic cultivation to flatten their enemies. lwj is confused and turned on and maybe a little guilty for underestimating him
#there would be so many plot points to iron out here#but IMAGINE#is it obvious that protectiveness is my favorite trope#mdzs#the untamed#mo dao zu shi#the grandmaster of demonic cultivation#wei wuxian#lan wangji#wangxian

Least favorite writing tropes: Multiple PoVs retelling the same event.
Like, seriously, do you really need to retell the same superhero fight five different times? Repeat the same conversation from both sides?
Just pick one Point of view per scene, and pick the point of view that would either be the most emotionally impactful, or tells the audience the most information. I can assure you, we don't need to know everyone's thoughts about the same event across three different chapters.
#writing advice#writing tropes#writing problems#tropes#character tropes#is the story i'm vague posting about well written? yes#does it have an interesting plot? yes#will i keep reading it? no#because despite all the positives#it made me read the same fight from red robin's/nightwings/batmans/red hoods/oracles points of view#i cannot forgive them for that

also btw that passage about media consumption as activism and the idea of "gayboring" (this post) are twin sisters to me because when you see media consumption as activism and therefore as a reflection of real life, any gritty or unsavory or "weird" aspects of any marginalized culture/community gets completely sanitized in favor of portraying an "ideal" form of that community in the eyes of consumerism (i.e.: boring and safe and non-confrontational)
#text!#might need to write a whole paper about 'gayboring' as a concept because it is....it's so prevalent rn.......#ofmd s2 and wwdits post-s2. who said that.#not to say they're bad stories just that they (in my humble onion) are using queerness to avoid actually writing plots#bc who needs plots when you have ao3 tropes lol#it's literally why i stopped advertising myself as a 'queer artist/trans artist/black artist' bc its being turned into a selling point#rather than a real life#(again in my humble onion)#sorry im working on my final research paper im in a writing mood

2024 reads / storygraph
Don’t Let The Forest In
YA horror
an anxious Australian boy whose only friends are his twin sister & best friend/roommate returns to boarding school in the US - but his sister is ignoring him, and his friend is acting strange, with rumors of having something to do with his parents’ murder
he follows him into the nearby forest one night - and finds him fighting eldritch monsters from the dark fairytales & art they create together, desperate to stop them from hurting anyone else
ace MC, m/m
#Don’t Let The Forest In#aroaessidhe 2024 reads#asexual books#i mean not to be influenced by a book’s cover to love it immediately but like#yeah pretty made for me. i thought this was great.#dark forest fairytale vibes & horror based around the exploration of (not) processing trauma#and some messy gay codependant yearning (and beginnings of some nice friendships)#there were a few directions I was worried the plot was going to go in at certain points which would have dampened my enjoyment#but it bypassed those thankfully#i really wanted to see his relationship with his sister because we didn’t see much of that#but I also got the impression there was a reason for that and it would be addressed eventually….which it is.#Maybe the ending is a little rushed? I would have loved to have more of it.#“he could cut me to bloody pieces if he wanted. i couldn’t stop him even if i tried” bitch you’re in high school. it’s not that dramatic#(kidding I love that kind of prose and messy codependency is fun to read)#also there’s a trope I dislike in other books where an ace character is all self hating about it#then another person is like it’s ok to be ace :) and then they’re suddenly proud and happy.#and this Could have done that but I think it explores his feelings about accepting his asexuality with more nuance so that’s nice

it's an interesting dynamic that a lot of kids shows have a human (or human-ish) main character who helps/rules/etc a place full of sentient but non-human creatures. princess peach and the toads, true and the rainbow kingdom, charlie's colorforms city, gabby's dollhouse, etc etc
often this is bc the main character is a self insert for the child viewer, and children love to imagine playing with creatures and critters, plus it's convenient to make the "npcs" something easier to design and animate than a bunch of a humans. but you end up with the one outsider coming in as a savior? and i'm always just like. the rammies
#silverstarschat#there's another example i'm thinking of but i can't remember what it's called right now#but the MC's toys call her when they need help and the toys in her room arrange themself into an imagination land for her to hop in & help#prince bubblegum also kinda fits this trope but it's more of a deconstruction#bc it's a definite plot point that she's imperfect and the dynamic is weird

The thing about mean rivals is that like there's kinda a reason we stop having them the second the plots started getting world-ending in scope and that's because you do not have time to deal with some whiny asshole who you've beaten over and over again's shit when a space chinchilla is about to suffocate everyone in the region
Like if they're a dick to you the entire way through they quickly become all bark and no bite because narratively they're going to keep losing to you, and again progressively destroying the ego of a small child is second to whatever this year's eldritch abomination is (and if they went so far as to help the eldritch abomination it raises questions about why they're friendly enough to battle you in the post game).
So like. It's simpler if they're just nice? And have arcs where the fact that they keep losing to you is the point? Your rival isn't the final boss anymore you don't have to build up to finally being able to defeat them for good (except not really) (I guess Hau in USUM arguably but LBR the final boss is Ultra Necrozma)
Like I guess I get annoyed when people don't acknowledge there's a point to how the rivals have been handled since gen 3. You don't have to like it per se but there's a reason the rivals are like this and it's not just the devs don't want to upset little kids.
The fact that the adults care about your safety on the other hand...
#I'd have to go play through it properly but like. the plot of Gen I is really weak and for narrative sake I think we should not be holding#ourselves to its tropes#(i don't say this to be disparaging to Gen I I respect those games so much#I mostly say it to like make a point)#also like the rivals didn't start exclusively choosing the Pokémon weaker than you until the one stronger than you showed up elsewhere#what's more intimidating Kukui and Leon having the stronger starter or the weaker one?#meanwhile Hop and Nemona are like. explicitly going easy on you. Nemona was about to waste you with her champion level team like a Pokémon#player stumbling across a bug catcher they missed while having god in their party#yeah of course when clavell points that out she chooses the weaker starter#Hop also has two Pokémon on you and is not ready for you to be as good as you are that's why he takes losing so hard later#he's being cocky#ANYWAY THIS HAS BEEN YOUR SEMI MONTHLY ALTO RANT ABOUT CERTAIN POKÉMON FANS#Pokemon

We as a fandom don’t talk enough about how Game of Thrones decided to combine Jon Snow and Young Griff into one character and how that was absolutely ridiculous on like 1000 different levels. Because how do you combine two characters who are FOILS to one another and then play it completely straight?! Then to make matters worse they gave Jon the boy’s stupid name?! Goddamnit I knew they didn’t get Jon as a character pretty early on, but why mesh his arc with the one guy you shouldn’t combine with? 😭
#top 3 greatest got crimes I fear#talk about understanding neither character#like Aegon is there to serve as a foil to Jon and inform on a lot of the tropes grrm is deconstructing with Jon’s arc#you can’t make them the same character because you completely miss the whole point#also remember when they combined jon and stannis?#like people acknowledge that and are like yeah fine what ever but like….#am I the only one who also freaking HATES that?!?#because Jon and Stannis are anti-parallels you CANT DO THAT#without completely ruining Jon’s arc#like idc if it ruins stannis’ plot line but I care about Jon because he’s one of the central/main characters!!!#you can’t combine his story line with more minor characters who are meant to serve as foils to him#but what else can I expect from the themes are for eighth grade book reports brigade#jon snow#aegon vi targaryen#young griff#asoiaf#game of thrones

Main character lineup for a western AU of me and @gxdcomplex’s fantasy ocs! Celestine is a rancher, Atticus is his stablehand (who may or may not have a past he doesn’t want to talk about or why he’s run away from it) and Meadowlark is under their care.
[Marrowsnap and Sienna are she/her, Carrion is they/she] And here are the Coyote Sisters’ leaders, the og coyote sisters! They lead a pack of werecoyotes (and all other people willing to travel with them who need a place to belong) and while they try to avoid conflict, they have some mischievous packmates who wind up out of line and go after a rancher’s herd or get into scuffles in town which is a headache for the Sisters to deal with. Because of this they often go head to head with Celestine and Atticus.
Little unfinished comic I made about Sienna and Carrion finding a wanted poster about them. (Gristle was one of their packmates that tried to attack one of Celestine’s cows)
#I love… western au#my art#art#sketch#furry#idk what to call this AU like idk how to tag this#western au#cowboy oc#cow boy#unicorn oc#werewolf#werewolf oc#werecoyote#oc: marrowsnap#Oc: sienna#Oc: carrion#oc: celestine#oc: meadowlark#Oc: atticus#cowboy art#Im still not entirely sure the logistics of Meadowlark being technically Celestine’s cow boy (half cow half boy yeehaw)#Because this was originally just a one off little sexy idea like Woag what if my prince oc was a cowboy. What then#but now I am Too Invested and I’m giving it PLOT and BACKSTORY#and now outside of the kink setting it’s like well. It’s kind of weird. Is he like a cow? Or like a person? Do I commit to him being like a#cow? Or do I just make him like a person (who happens to be half cow) who does the farm cow thing for money as his job??#Yeah the last one seems best. Also easiest#bc I was looking at it. And on paper it’s weird that my poc character would be quote unquote “owned” by a very.. white oc#Taken quite literally bc Celestine has white fur all over ANYWAYS not the point the point is that it was getting kinda dangerously close to#the whole “POC character is treated more like an animal even though he’s basically the same amount of animal as everyone else and this#is normalized and also he is “owned” quote unquote by a very white character” trope and I Did Not Like That

I think one of my favorite things for exploring characterization and making sure plots are character-driven, without people just being puppetted by the plot, is playing out how different characters in the main role would change a story.
Like, if your MC is an asshole who won't admit their feelings, and you want to check that they're driving the plot, plug in a character who's good at being kind and see what changes. If your MC is rebellious and free-spirited, plug in someone who follows the rules. If the plot doesn't change, you have a problem. If it does, it's one of the hallmarks of a good story.
#'characterization as the plot demands' is one of my least favorite tropes in existence#there are so many 'tricks' to check for it but like#this is such an easy one#writing#kat rambles#anyway this is brought to you by trying to picture how the hourless houses plot would have changed if jon was the mc#there would not even be a story at this point tbh

Do you think Percy should be single? Or do you ship him with another character?
i don't think rick is particularly good at writing romances, so any endgame relationship he writes is going to annoy tf outta me. eventually.
i've rbed a few posts talking abt his proclivities when it comes to writing romances, but a special shout out to the "my partner is the only thing that matters in the world" that's typical of a romance novel. i'm not reading a romance novel on purpose. can we care abt other characters. and characterization. and the plot.
so, yes, i would rather percy (and literally every major character) be single bc of that.
#i don't think romances are necessary in any genre except romance. in any other genre they're an accessory. or should be.#and i'm aware what percy's love interests represent but also...those plot points exist anyway...without them...#also if they never get together then maybe rick would actually treat annabeth's abandonment issues seriously instead of#relegating it to a cute (allegedly) possessive trope#yeah i'm still salty rick resolved that w love triangles that ended w a suicide and an oath of celibacy 😑#anyway! to address the sort of implied question#this is gonna sound funny from someone w a ship url but i have no ship loyalty#i can imagine anything dot jpeg#answered#anti percabeth#<- i guess
