#Playful Kitsune: Selkie

i've been rolling around the idea of a mythic/fantasy au where everyone's a different mythic creature (or is familiar with non-human/magic society already) except makoto and hopes peak is a magic school encouraging inter-species socialization

makoto naegi - human. completely. has zero magic. has never interacted with anyone outside of human society before

kyoko kirigiri - a magical tool shaped like a human. developed by the kirigiri family of monster hunters. gained independence after hunting a dragon on her own

byakuya togami - a half-human, half-dragon hybrid. successfully became heir to the togami family of dragons. only has a mostly-human form so far

aoi asahina - a selkie. the fastest swimmer of most water-dwelling creatures, very friendly and playful

sakura ogami - a half-oni/ogre. despite human lineage, gained prestige after becoming the most accomplished martial artist of her family

sayaka maizono - a half-human, half-harpy hybrid. leads an idol group of similar hybrid performers

hifumi yamada - a tanuki. is extremely fond of human culture and entertainment, so takes a human form regularly to indulge

toko fukawa - a human descendant of exorcists. is haunted by a somewhat malevolent ghost

yasuhiro hagakure - a piece of the world tree that landed near tokyo and fell under the care of a human woman. grew up and adopted a human form and now sells prophecies

celeste ludenberg - a pure-blooded vampire, supposedly, with european ties. but is actually a kitsune with hardcore dedication to the aesthetic

kiyotaka ishimaru - a werewolf. trying to cultivate the image of werewolves from wild and uncivilized to loyal and dignified

mondo owada - a vampire. leads a gang of vampires and thralls who ride at night

chihiro fujisaki - an elf (like the shoe cobbler and keebler variety, not legolas). has tinkered a wooden doll named 'alter ego' to carry them around

leon kuwata - a satyr. very active and extremely athletic, but wants to get into music and play punk rock on pan pipes

mukuro ikusaba - a human, descended from a witch that almost destroyed the world

Larkwood is dangerous, but love scares me even more.

As a selkie, nothing matters more to me than my freedom. Larkwood destroyed that when they took my skin, and with it, my ability to transform. I’ve spent the six years since incomplete, but now that the rumors say Larkwood has changed, it’s my chance to finally get back what they stole.

Humanoids and shape shifters from folklore rated for dateability

Selkie: 9/10. Sweet. Soft. Probably gives great cuddles. Generally okay with the compromise of a seaside home. Family oriented too!

Kelpie: 7/10. Majestic. Exciting. Will take you riding along the beach. Points deducted for history of drowning people, but shall be given the benefit of the doubt.

Merfolk: 6/10. Unpredictable. Beautiful. You’ll have to move in with them, and again drowning has been an issue. May be better for a long distance relationship. 8/10 for long distance relationship.

Fae (Gaelic): 6.5/10. Enchanting. Artistic. Probably a bit possessive though. Great fun at parties, but may have some issues with letting you visit home…

Kitsune: 7.5/10. Very stylish. Charming. Loyal and expects the same in return. Knows how to have fun (maybe at the expense of other people). Gives wonderful presents, no need to ask where they came from. Very picky eater.

Werewolf: 7/10. Playful. Tactile. Strong, can carry you around. Does have a tendency to tear up clothes. Sadly forced to deduct points for biting incidents, bad table manners and shedding.

Striga: 2/10. Magical, can literally change into a crow, but can’t be left alone with children. Being a living vampire is cool, but throwing up blood all the time is not. Probably.

Troll (Danish): 8.5/10. Fun. Great with kids. Will throw you parties with loads of food and music. Kind of loud and unkempt, but will also show you all the secrets of the woods and hills.

"Sylvain!" A familiar voice calls out as Selkie approaches her friend. His name graces her voice, rather than the playful nickname she'd given him before - and in her hands, two sticks of Dango. As she stops to his side, the kitsune extends the snack offering, though there's a certain rigidness in her frame. "We haven't really talked since... you know. Almyra. Do you think we could chat?"

There’s a thin, hazy sort of film over his eyes, or maybe it’s over the world, he can’t tell. There’s conversation around him too, the usual bustle of day to day life, conversations that sometimes clip to a halt as he passes, but it’s muted, like there’s water sitting upon his eardrums, a dull buzz.

Is it the Lance’s doing? Or the enormity of everything that comes with it? More expectation stacked upon him, the invisible ring of his crest clamped tight around his neck, a choke collar on a hound.

The only thing he really, truly registers is the awful, unending twitching, like a needy child, always after his attention. Sylvain isn’t sure what he’s supposed to do with it right now. It’s not like he can just toss something so important in his room and forget about it, especially with his father on the grounds somewhere. He doesn’t want to think about what would happen if he crossed paths with the Margrave without the thing in his hand.

On heavy feet, he drags himself to a secluded spot, around the side past the gates to the entrance hall, sets the Lance to rest against the wall, and slumps against it with a heavy sigh. He lifts a hand, near numb with how tight his grip on the weapon had been and fists it into his hair, the sting of it distracting from the scream he wants to let out. He doesn’t want this. He doesn’t want any of this. What he wants is to crawl away somewhere and hope he just disappears, unchallenged, unnoticed, until everything just stops.

“-vain!”

A bitter laugh scratches in his throat. As if he’d be that lucky. He shifts, trying to change his stance into something casual rather than heavy, pinning a smile in place as he turns to find... Ah.

There’s the barest hint of a twitch of his lips, and his eyes flip down to the offered stick of Dango. He’s not proud of it, but there’s a reason they haven’t spoken since Almyra, and the hesitance in both her voice and posture as she says it tells him she might have already guessed as to why. His own shoulders go stiff, and he clenches his hand into a fist when he found his fingers instinctively extending towards the Lance.

There has to be a reason she’s still allowed to be here.

“Yeah, hah,” he laughs, humourless, carefully reaching for the offered Dango. But his eyes never leave Selkie, unblinking, like a stag watching the wolf stalking through the bushes, “it’s been a while, hasn’t it? We should catch up.”

Kiran could recognize those golden ears and tail anywhere. Their time with Selkie in the Order had been nothing short of lively. With a jubilant and playful attitude that never ceased to brighten Kiran's darkest days, dull moments became a thing of the past when Selkie was nearby. "Selkie!" Kiran called out to the crowd! Watching her weave in and out of the festival-goers to meet up with her buddies with such glee brought a smile to Kiran's face. Oh, how Kiran had missed such a radiant soul.

“Selkie!” A voice rings out, and the kitsune’s ears twitch and swivel to find the source... there! Through the crowd she pushes - how many people are probably really annoyed at her by now? Who cares - she pushes through regardless, making her way to the source of the noise... and stopping dead in her tracks as her eyes fell upon ivory robe and golden accents. 

Happy new ears! 

Something shifts, her brows furrow, but regardless, she takes the stranger’s hands in hers. “Hey there! It’s nice to meet you, Kiran!”

She stops once more, wincing as other worlds invading her dreams spread their influence once more, now corrupting her waking moments. 

“Thanks for getting me this super-cute outfit Kiran! My daddy made this outfit for me! It really goes well with my ears and tail, I love it so much! Do you like it? Also, how do you know my name? Are you a new teacher? Oh, is this your first night? Have you been to this ball before? New Years This ball is great, but I wonder why we can’t just party and play like this all the time!”

I guess we’ve gotta bring peace to Askr and all that first though, huh? “That way everyone could relax!”

Gods, her head hurt. Why did looking at Kiran this stranger mess with her head so much? A shake of her head, and she pulled out her card and stamp. “Hey, let’s trade stamps!”

This is coming from most of the interactions I've had with Kitty, but I could see you pulling off a character like Selkie from Fire Emblem Fates. Both are incredibly playful, and their both shapeshifters (though, Selkie is a Kitsune as opposed to a shifterkin)

Kaleidoscope

"I bet the ring Daddy used to propose was beautiful, wasn't it?" her daughter asked, her ears perking up in excitement. "Why don't you ever wear it? You have your wedding band on. Where's your ring? Did you lose it in battle? Was Daddy sad? I-"

"Selkie, honey," Corrin giggled, gently putting her hands on her daughter's shoulders. "Slow down. One question at a time."

Selkie danced in place. Both of Corrin and Kaden's children were hyperactive, so they were used to a bombardment of questions and hypotheticals whenever talking to either Kana or Selkie. To be fair, Kaden wasn't exactly a calm person himself, full of energy and curiosity. She had time to prepare before their children came into the world, Selkie first then Kana closely after. They had wanted to wait a bit after Selkie was born before having another child, but it didn't quite work out that way. A little over a year after she bore Selkie, Kana arrived into the world. Kaden was on cloud nine, and it was endearing to see him so happy and in love with his family. He was a wonderful father, but it saddened them to resort to the outer realms so their children could grow up safely. They had no idea time passed quickly there until they went to see them a week after they put them in their separate realms, and Selkie was around the size of a five year old, Kana around two or three. They felt they had missed out on so much, so the moment they were reunited and followed them into their realm, they promised to be a family.

"I can't help it! Daddy loves you so much, and I have to know how you two fell in love!"

Corrin shook her head, a smile on her face. "We fell in love because... well... how does anyone fall in love?"

Selkie furrowed her eyebrows, grumbling. "C'mon, Mama. Tell me!"

The Hoshidan princess reached up, tucking a lock of black hair behind her ear. She began to think of what had made her fall for the Kitsune. "Honestly, I can't just choose one thing, dear." Her eyes were distant in reminiscence. "Kaden... you and Kana are very much like him, you know."

"Really?" Selkie beamed, edging closer to her mother.

"Mmhm," Corrin nodded. "He cheered me up whenever I was sad, making sure I wasn't that way for long." She gasped, snapping her index and thumb fingers together. "I can remember the exact moment I knew I loved him."

"Ooo! Tell me, tell me!" Selkie begged.

"I'm getting there," Corrin laughed. "We had just come back from a battle. We were both injured, but Kaden was dangerously so. Sakura was attending to him at the clinic, and Azama was taking care of me here." She motioned around the treehouse, the home she now shared with Kaden. "He left, and I couldn't stop crying. He told me that he would return later to check on me, as I was running a fever. I fell asleep, but even in my dreams, I still worried about Kaden."

"Is that where the scar on your hip and the scar on his chest came from?" Selkie questioned.

"Yes," Corrin replied with a single nod. "I woke up, crying, and that's when I realized that I was warm. Before, I was cold because of the fever. Without even having to look, I knew."

"It was Daddy," Selkie smiled, her eyes shining.

"It was. He had snuck away from Sakura and came in to see if I was all right. He must have seen me crying in my sleep and cuddled me. He was sound asleep himself, his arms wrapped around me. And I knew then. As many tears as I had shead, as concerned as I was... and how I felt at home in his hold... I was in love."

Selkie thew her arms around Corrin, who hugged her back. "Oh, Mama! That's wonderful!" She let her go. "And?"

Corrin laughed. "And what?"

"You know," Selkie playfully nudged her with her elbow. "The proposal. The ring."

"Your father didn't give me a ring."

Selkie's face transformed from playful to downright shocked. "Whaaat? He asked you to marry him and didn't even give you a ring?!"

"He didn't give me a ring, no. But..." She walked to her bookshelf and took an object off of a shelf. Returning to Selkie, she showed her the object, making her daughter all the more confused.

"A kaleidoscope?"

"Look," Corrin urged. Selkie took it from her, and instantly, her mind began to change.

"Ohh. It's fancy!" She traced her fingers over the intricate carvings. She then looked into it and breathed deeply. "How pretty!"

"He'd had it a while. One of the times we shared, we were healing after our injuries, and he brought it to me. After that, whenever he saw I was sad, he'd bring it to cheer me up. Then... he gave it to me. Said he didn't need it anymore, because he'd found something more beautiful to look at."

"Mama..." Selkie whispered, taking her face away from the kaleidoscope and focusing on her mother

"That's when he proposed."

Her eyes moved away from Corrin down to the kaleidoscope in her hands. Delicately, she touched it, the object more precious to her now.

"I'm glad you two met," she softly spoke, lifting her head, a smile on her face.

Corrin chuckled, reaching up and petting Selkie's ears. Selkie leaned into her hand, very much like how a dog would. She was half-Kitsune, after all.

"I'd hope so. Had we not, you and Kana wouldn't have been born."

They heard the door to the home open end close, and upon looking, they saw Kaden and Kana making their way to them.

"How was training?" Corrin asked, seeing them both drenched in sweat.

"It was great! Kana is getting really strong," Kaden responded, ruffling Kana's messy, sweaty hair. "Midori even came by to watch."

"She's really nice, Mama! Just like Kaze," Kana informed, despite Corrin already knowing. "But she's still meek, like Mozu. It's funny." He then looked to his sister. "You hungry, Selkie?"

Selkie nodded vigorously. "Yes! I think Mozu and Kaze caught a bunch of fish earlier!"

She and Kana left, talking about how they wanted their fish. Kaden smiled, then his eyes landed on the kaleidoscope.

"Ohhh. Selkie was curious, huh?"

"She was," Corrin answered, putting her hand on top of her husband's that was on the table. "She almost got mad at you."

Kaden flinched, his face expressively worried. This made Corrin giggle. "What did I do?"

"Nothing. She didn't know your engagement ring wasn't a 'ring'."

Kaden chuckled. "Ah." He leaned down, placing his forehead on Corrin's forehead.

"Eww, Kaden. You're sweaty!"

"I'm 'glistening', Corrin. Perfection doesn't sweat," he joked.

Corrin slapped him lightly, playfully, giggling. "Let's go eat. I'm sure you're starving."

"Yes! Then let's go to the springs!"

They started out their home, Kaden taking Corrin's hand into his own.

Friendly and Neutral Monsters

In Mythika there are mostly evil creatures you find on the battlefield, but sometimes (at random) there are also good-natured and neutral creatures in the battles.

Good-Natured creatures have a green glow around them and they help the heroes with beating the evil monsters (which have a red glow), but if you by accident attack these good natured creatures their green glow becomes red and they start to attack you. Most of these good creatures will boost the stats of the heroes or just attack and de-buff the stats of enemies for you, others may give you gold if they survive through the battle (like the Leprechaun) or increase your luck, strength, hp or defense. Some will heal you, others will heal diseases.

Neutral Creatures have a yellow glow around them, they won’t help the heroes and they won’t attack them, but if the hero attacks them they will fight back. Some neutral creatures will also attack evil creatures, or are being attacked by the evil red glow creatures, this is handy as this means the heroes won’t be attacked. Of course some of the neutral creatures drop good items, so you may want to attack them just for their items, or if you find that an evil deed you may let them in peace.

The battle always ends when the last red-glow evil enemies are defeated, any neutral yellow or good green creature still on the battlefield will be ignored.

Spells and Magic which hit entire rows of creatures (like blizzard, meteor storm and such spells) will also damage the yellow and green creatures, and then they will also turn red and aggressive against you, so while these creatures are mostly a good blessing, it means you can’t use some spells if you don’t want to hurt them during the battle.

Agloolik (Inuit) – Humanoid / Beastman / Shifter - These gentle cousins of the Selkie love to help good-hearted fishermen to catch the biggest of fish. Airavata (Hindu) – Beast / Angel - In ancient times these beautiful heavenly white elephants served deities and beasts of burden. Alicanto (Chilean) – Beast / Avian - These gold-eating Cara Cara birds guide gentle and honest souls towards great treasures. Alkonost (Russian) – Fae / Beastman / Avian - Their voice heals the souls of every good natured soul that hears it, it showers them in good memories. Amazon (Greek) – Humanoid / Human - While they are sometimes harsh towards males, these warrior women have a kind heart. Anggitay (Philippine) – Fae / Beastman / Nymph - These horned female centaurs love gems, and while they are not evil they may rob caravans when they spot gemstones. Anhanga (Brazilian) – Fae / Spirit - These guardians of nature appear to be a beautiful, but ghostly white stag, all types of gentle Fae live on its antlers. Arkan Sonney (Manx) – Fae / Fairy - Touching these prickly little fairy pigs will give you all the luck in the world, if only temporarily. Ashinaga-Jin (Japanese) – Humanoid - These extremely long legged humanoid tribes often work together with the Tenaga-Jin. Atomy (English) – Fae / Fairy - The smallest creatures in Mythika, these brave-hearted pixies the size of an mite can curse others to become smaller. Baku (Japanese) – Fae / Chimerae / Parasite - Eaters of nightmares, these gentle creatures are the enemies of dream-haunting monsters. Baldanders (German) – Aberration / Alien - Baldanders can shape their alien bodies into any object they desire, they love to trick and joke and can be annoying. Biwa-Bokuboku (Japanese) – Construct / Spirit - These sad musical instruments want to be played by a humanoid friend, then they will bring boosts in speed and strength. Bluecap (English) – Elemental / Spirit / Shifter - For every soul these gentle cousins of the Redcaps save, their hat becomes a deeper blue. Boitata (Brazilian) – Elemental / Reptilian - During the day their flames are red, but during the night they are a haunting blue, sometimes they become aggressive during the night. Bonnacon (M-European) – Beast - As defense mechanism these strange bovine creatures can release burning, acid feces over their foes, burning them into ashes. Byakko (Japanese) – Beast / Spirit - These beautiful white tigers heal friendly creatures with their licks, they are often hunted by evil warlords for their pelts. Caladrius (Roman) – Beast / Avian / Angel - White birds which can absorb sickness and diseases into their own bodies and then fly it off. Cat Sith (Scottish) – Fae - Magical cat creatures, often used by good natured spellcasters as familiars, they have 9 lives. Cecaelia (Unknown) – Aberration / Beastman / Cephalopod - Octopus-like Merfolk, they can change the color of their skin as easy as a human can change clothes. Centaur (Greek) – Humanoid / Beastman - Half horse and half humanoid, centaurs can be harsh and aggressive, but most are gentle hermits and druids. Chickcharney (Bahamas) – Beast / Avian - These bizarre owl-like creatures control the luck of other creatures, being mean to them will be very unwise. Clurichaun (Irish) – Fae / Leprechaun - Always drunk, these red-wearing leprechauns turn other creatures drunk with their sweat, some become addicted to it. Curupira (Brazilian) – Fae / Gnome - Whenever they spot fire their bright red hairs will start to burn, they love the sight of wild flames. Cu Sith (Scottish) – Fae - Beautiful fae dogs with a green pelt, their drool heals plants and when it hits the soil flowers start to grow. Cynocephali (M-European) – Humanoid / Beastman - Dog-headed humanoids which often take jobs as guards, gladiators or paladins. Dijiang (Chinese) – Aberration / Alien - While they are very playful and just want to dance, their bizarre appearance spreads more chaos and destruction. Djinn (Arabian) – Elemental / Genie / Shifter - They may fulfill wishes for friendly creatures, sometimes the wish will work backwards though. Dobhar-Chu (Irish) – Fae / Chimerae - Very playful, but hyperactive giant otters with enormous maws full of dangerous teeth, they behave much like dogs. Domovoi (Slavic) – Fae - These little furry Fae protect houses and keep them warm in the time of winter, killing them will turn them to ash. Dragonette (Swiss) – Dragon - Very small and cute dragons that are often found as pets for humans and elves, their fire breath is kinda pathetic. Dragon Turtle (Chinese) – Dragon / Reptilian - While they look very dangerous and are very big, these turtles are actually very gentle until they get attacked. Dryad (Greek) – Plant / Nymph / Shifter - They are kind to creatures close to nature, but very aggressive to despoilers of nature. Encantado (Brazilian) – Fae / Beastman / Shifter - The friendly variant of Fossegrim, these beautiful pink-haired male nymphs can transform into a pink dolphin. Erote (Greek) – Fae / Angel / Parasite - Their arrows spread the feelings of love, sometimes these tricksters use their arrows to cause mischief however. Fastachee (Native American) – Fae / Gnome - Gnomes of the fields that love to study healing plants, their healing powers are legendary and among the most powerful. Griffon (Greek) – Beast / Chimerae / Avian - Proud creatures, half lion and half eagle, the human Empire uses them for aerial transport, they only eat horses. Gwyllion (Welsh) – Fae / Gnome - Grumpy old female gnomes from the mountains, they may curse a person for nothing, and reward the next for just being there. Hippocampus (Greek) – Beast / Chimerae - Beautiful seahorses with many colors, they are used by water-breathing races as mounts. Huldra (Danish) – Fae / Nymph - A little xenophobic, these wood nymphs have an open back and a strange ox-like tail, they can be mean sometimes. Hupia (Caribbean) – Undead / Spirit - Good natured ghosts without a face, they guide and help people in need. Kamikiri (Japanese) – Aberration - These crab-like humanoids love to eat hair, so sometimes they can be very annoying. Kappa (Japanese) – Beast / Chimerae - These waterway tricksters love to prank on passerby, but they turn deadly when there is a Suiko around. Kapre (Philippine) – Fae / Giant - The smoke of these jungle giants can cause severe headaches and hallucinations and visions. Kasa-Obake (Japanese) – Construct / Spirit - Living umbrella monsters that want to travel and find adventures, they love to help heroes in need. Killmouilis (Scottish) – Humanoid / Dwarf - A dwarf folk with enormous noses and a very strong sense of smell, they can smell the smallest details. Kirin (Japanese) – Dragon / Unicorn / Angel - Beautiful unicorn-like dragon stags which are fanatic slayers of evil creatures, they can sense the alignment of creatures. Kitsune (Japanese) – Fae / Shifter - Shapeshifting fox-spirits which can take the form of a very beautiful elven woman. They can be tricky, but most are gentle. Korrigan (Breton) – Fae / Gnome / Shifter - The gentle variation of the Leshy, they only curse evil creatures, turning them into wooden puppets or ensnaring them with their long living beards. Lammasu (Sumerian) – Beast / Chimerae / Angel - A variant of angelic sphinxes, they like to reward good-natured heroes and creatures with blessings and boosts. Leprechaun (Irish) – Fae / Leprechaun - The sweat of these green-wearing Fae will give other creatures a luck boost, they can make other creatures rich. Lunwaba (African) – Humanoid / Beastman / Reptilian - Chameleon-folk, they are very slow but also very gentle. Merrow (Irish) – Humanoid / Beastman / Fish - While the female of these Merfolk are very beautiful, the males are extremely ugly. Mokele-Mbembe (African) – Beast / Reptilian - Giant sauropod lizards which are as enigmatic as they are powerful, getting on their bad side is a very bad idea. Monoceros (M-European) – Beast / Unicorn - Another word for the white Unicorns, they love young maidens and bless them with spells of light and magic. Morko (Finnish) – Elemental / Ooze - While they appear to be very scary and cold, these poor elementals just want to be loved and hug with others. Naga (Hindu) – Humanoid / Beastman / Reptilian - Giant snakes with humanoid faces, they can adjust their poison to heal, bless or kill. Ningen (Antarctic) – Aberration / Beastman - Giant white Merfolk, half whale and half humanoid, they are very enigmatic.

Quetzalcoatl (Aztec) – Beast / Chimerae / Shifter - Colorful winged and feathered snakes. Ratatoskr (Norse) – Fae / Parasite - These little fae squirrels love gossip. Sarangay (Philippine) – Humanoid / Beastman Gentle Minotaurs which guard treasures. Sarmatian Sea Snail (Scandinavian) – Aberration / Cephalopod - Giant sea snails with stag-like horns. Tanuki (Japanese) – Humanoid / Beastman / Shifter - Raccoon-like humanoids, when you beat them they will sell stuff to you in their little shops. Tenaga-Jin (Japanese) – Humanoid - Very long-armed folks. Tengu (Japanese) – Humanoid / Beastman / Avian - These love to teach others material arts. Thriae (Greek) – Fae / Beastman / Nymph / Vermin - Bee Nymphs which control swarms of bees. Thunderbird (Native American) – Beast / Avian - The gentle variant of the Impundulu. Tianlong (Chinese) – Dragon - Luck Dragons, beautiful and big. Tiddalik (Australian) – Beast / Amphibian - Water spitting giant frogs. Urmahlullu (Mesopotamian) – Humanoid / Beastman - Centauric creatures half humanoid and half lion. Valkyrie (Norse) – Humanoid / Angel - Angels of Battle. Wolpertinger (German) – Beast / Chimerae / Avian - Strange winged rabbits with antlers. Wulgaru (Australian) – Construct / Spirit - Wood Golems which appear like living totem poles. Xiao (Chinese) – Beast / Chimerae - Kleptomaniac flying monkey’s. Yanagi Baba (Japanese) – Plant / Parasite - Like old Dryads living in Willow Trees. Yeti (Himalayan) – Humanoid / Beastman - Sasquatch from the cold mountains. Zamba Zaraa (Mongolian) – Beast / Shifter - Small hedgehog-like creatures that can expand their bodies with air. Zlatorog (Slovenian) – Beast - White Chamois creatures with golden horns and magical healing blood. Zorigami (Japanese) – Construct / Spirit - Living clock monsters which control time.

A Tale of Worry

Crash!  Faster and faster his feet carried him.  Ceren stumbled as he leaped through the air.  He quickly regained his balance, mindful of his companion.  He glanced over his shoulder at the passenger on his back, and worry etched itself onto his face.

“You’ll be alright, Velvet…” the kitsune mumbled, “I’ll get you to a healer, and you’ll be alright.”

He crashed through the bushes and mumbled a quick “sorry” when his passenger let out a whimper.  Ceren’s eyes scanned the path ahead of him.  There was no danger for now.  If he had been more careful, his friend wouldn’t have gotten hurt.  The kitsune cursed under his breath and sped up.

They had been playing in the fields when it happened.  Faceless and risen had come out of nowhere.  Velvet had shouted to get his attention.  Ceren thought none of it at first, but he was soon made aware of the monsters advancing on them.  He saw his friend tense with anticipation.  Velvet’s fur stood on end, and she bared her fangs in agitation.  There was a wild and fierce glint in her eyes as if she were feral.

Ceren shivered at the sight.  He had never seen his friend act like this before.  His own ears pulled back, and a growl escaped his lips.  The faceless and risen were stepping closer.  Two beaststones glowed as the friends took on their respective beast forms.  Without the stones, they would lose control of themselves.  The stones were an anchor for the sanity of any shifter.

Wolfskin and kitsune lunged forward in a blur of fur, teeth, and claws.  The tore through a line of faceless and risen, but they couldn’t stop there.  The had to cut through the hoard enough to get to safety.  They needed to return to the camp where their parents waited.  Blood showered the grass and soaked the dirt.  The faceless and risen fell and met their demise, yet they would not reach a peace of mind.  Faceless and risen were only truly dead once the body was destroyed.  It was the least any warrior could do for the mindless undead.

“Ceren!  Look out!” Velvet had cried.  Ceren turned around to see a faceless raising an axe above him.  The kitsune couldn’t move.  Even if he had, he wouldn’t escape unscathed.  His eyes squeezed shut as a body collided with his, knocking him aside.  A high pitched yelp sounded, followed by a thud.  Ceren opened his eyes.  He hadn’t been hit…  But how?  His eyes looked to his left slowly.

No.  Please don’t let this be true.  A scream ripped itself from his throat.  He growled and turned to the faceless.  Lunging forward, he tore out its heart.  The kitsune cut down one more before shifting back to his humanoid form.  Ceren quickly gathered up his friend and fled.  His friend had reverted back to normal when she was struck down.  It scared him, he realized.  His friend was still conscious.

“I-It will be alright, Velvet!” he hurriedly said, “I’ll get you back to c-camp!  They’ll fix you up!”

Ceren’s eyes focused on the large slash across his friend’s back.  The white shirt dyed red with blood.  Velvet let out a pained whimper.  Ceren gulped before getting Velvet onto his back.  Once she was secured, the kitsune ran.

Ceren sat outside the medical tent.  His knees were drawn up to his chest.  He wrapped his arms around his legs and buried his face against them.  His normal cheerful demeanor was replaced with guilt and remorse.  The kitsune’s ears drooped and his tail lay lazily on the floor.  Footsteps approached him before someone sat down.

A hand on his shoulder jolted him back to reality.  Ceren turned his head to his new companion.  The kitsune gave a shaky nod of acknowledgement.  Hands offered him a cup of warm water that he quickly accepted.  Ceren gulped down the water, and his throat felt relieved.  He carefully handed the cup to his friend.

“Thanks, Forrest… “ he said quietly.  His eyes focused on Forrest’s long blond curls, and he reached out to touch them.  They were as soft and silky as they looked.

“Ceren… Do not blame yourself for what happened,” came the blond boy’s gentle voice, “she wouldn’t want you to.

Ceren’s golden eyes met Forrest’s brown ones.  The kitsune’s ears drooped more, and his hand dropped to his side.  “B-But I wasn’t careful… If I was paying attention, Velvet wouldn’t have needed to push me out of the way!”

Forrest sighed and pulled Ceren into a gentle hug.  “Do not beat yourself over this.  You and I both know that Velvet would risk her life for any of her friends.  She loves to protect everyone, even if she is in danger.  It is just the kind of person she is.”

“I know!  But she doesn’t need to!” cried Ceren, “She doesn’t have to protect any of us!  She was never obligated to do so!”

“But she wants to.  It is her way of showing her loyalty.  When the healers allow it, go in there and pay her a visit,” Forrest said lifting Ceren’s head.  Their eyes met, and a soft smile graced the blond’s face.  “But you should go in there with a smile, not a sad frown.

Ceren blinked in confusion before burying his face in the frilly pink clothing Forrest wore.  The blond momentarily flinched before gently running a hand through the sobbing kitsune’s hair.  “There, there… It will be alright, darling.”

The two stayed like that for hours.  Forrest comforted his friend as sobs shook Ceren’s body.  The blond quietly whispered comforting words as he continued to stroke the kitsune’s hair.  Their other friends sat and joined them.  Velouria snuggled against Ceren’s side and ran her hand down his back.  Shiro half-heartedly stated that Velvet was strong.  “She will be okay…” he said when everyone gave him a questioning look.  The group of children were not asked to move despite occupying the pathway.  Kana and Kanna had moved closer to Ceren and leaned against the kitsune.  Ceren’s sobs lessened as Shigure’s gently singing began to lighten the mood.  Everything would be alright; they were all together.

A healer stepped out of the tent and was taken by surprise when his eyes saw the puppy-pile outside.  Chuckling softly, Azama gently roused the children.  Bleary eyes looked around and quiet mumbles sounded.  Azama smiled when the children focused their gaze on him.  “You may go visit your friend now,” the healer said.

In an instant, the children rushed to their feet.  Azama raised a hand before any of them could make a move.  “You may visit, but one at a time please.  We do not want to overwhelm her.”

No one moved.  Each child glanced at another, and a question hung in the air.  Who would go first?  Immediately, all eyes fell on Ceren.  The kitsune blinked in confusion.

“W-Why are you all staring?” he said nervously.  He fiddled with his hands and stared at the ground.

Kiragi stepped forward and placed a hand on Ceren’s shoulder.  “You should go in first.”

Ceren’s brows furrowed.  “W-Why?”

His eyes focused on Midori as she spoke.  “Y-You brought her back here.  Back to where the healers could help her.”

“And you’re feeling awfully guilty,” Asugi said next, “you should go in and get it off your shoulders.  It will make you feel a bit better.”

Ceren gulped and nodded,  His eyes met Forrest and he smiled.  Ceren lifted the tent flap and walked in.  On the other side of the tent, Velvet sat up in bed.  The kitsune nibbled on his lips.  He took in a deep breath and carefully made his way over with a smile on his face.  “Hey Velvet, how are you feeling?”

The wolfskin turned to face him.  A smile crossed her face,  “Hello Ceren, I’m doing well.  A little sore, but that’s bound to happen.”

Ceren momentarily frowned before sitting on the edge of the bed.  His eyes looked over his friend.  He could see bandages peeking out of the collar of the oversized shirt Velvet wore.  His eyes followed the bandages that ran down her right arm.  A frown crossed his face.  The kitsune couldn’t see the full extent of Velvet’s injuries earlier, but now he could picture it.

“Don’t blame yourself, Ceren!” Velvet scolded with a playful smack on the head, “I do not want you thinking that!  I am always willing to make sure you stay out of harm's way!”

“You could have died!” whined Ceren.

“That won’t stop me from taking a hit for any of you.  I’m aware of the consequences, Ceren.  Please understand that I only wish for your safety.”

Ceren sighed and gently grasped the wolfskin’s bandaged hand.  He ran his fingers across the material.  His eyes slowly lifted as he stared at Velvet.  “Don’t you know people worry about you too?”

The wolfskin gulped and nodded.  “I’m well aware…” she said slowly.

“Then why do you do it?” asked Ceren frowning, “Why do you jump in the way of an attack for any of us?!”

Velvet sighed and looked to her lap.  She carefully pulled her hand away from Ceren.  Her ears twitched and she chewed her lip.  Her black eyes flicked up at the kitsune’s worried face.  “Can we talk about it another time?  I need to sort out my thoughts properly before I can explain.”

Ceren smiled and nodded slowly.  His eyes sparkled as he stared at his friend fondly.  The kitsune would gladly give his closest friend all the time she needed.  “Of course.  Take all the time you need.  All that matters now is that you get better.”

His hand gently lifted Velvet’s left hand.  Then his second hand came up and clamped over it.  A smile graced his face when a blush crossed Velvet’s cheeks.

“You’re my closest friend,” Ceren said sweetly, “I’m glad I met you.”

Velvet’s eyes widened and she stammered quickly, “I-I-I am… glad to have… met you… too!”

Ceren smiled before releasing the wolfskin’s hand.  He stood up and made his way to the exit.  Confused sputters sounded behind him.  He paused in front of the exit and smiled over his shoulder.  “You have more visitors,” he explained, “they’re waiting outside.”

Ceren stepped out and Velouria rushed in to fill the spot he had occupied.  Asugi let out an indignant “hey!” at being pushed out of the way.  Ceren looked back and smiled as Selkie tried to alleviate the young thief’s spoiled mood.  Things never changed here.  Frankly, Ceren wished childhood could last forever.  He knew however, that time would never allow that.  He’d just have to treasure moments like these as long as he could.

Ceren and Velvet have achieved A support level.
