Unconscious bias training is ‘nonsense’, says outgoing race relations chair
From the article;
'In a wide-ranging interview, the sociologist and cultural activist said he was proud of the role that his institute had played in putting institutional racism on the national agenda several decades ago, but was dismayed at the rise of terms such as unconscious bias.
“We made arguments to the state even when we’re on platforms alongside them saying this was nonsense. It’s racism we want to talk about, it’s systemic behaviour we want to talk about, institutionalised racism we want to talk about, not unconscious bias or racial awareness,” Prescod said. “It’s the stuff that kills that we want to talk about, the stuff that stunts lives that we want to talk about, the stuff that deforms lives that we want to talk about.”
The outgoing chair pointed to the increasing concern of a school-to-prison pipeline in the UK, where young minority ethnic children excluded from schools are forced into pupil referral units where they are groomed by criminal gangs – a clear example of systemic racism, he claims. “To talk about unconscious biases is an obvious sidestepping of the matter. And it’s also wanting to let people off,” Prescod said.

MICRO STORY
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There were footsteps, voices, strange noises. Someone was moving in the dark. Suddenly, it seemed to us as if a faint and deceitful glow began to insinuate itself in the center of the room.
-What is it?
-States your names!
A number of unusual phenomena took place. Everything was quite unexplainable. Disappearance of reports, objects, even persons or mysterious impregnations of spectral images on walls.
It appears that the oldest craters on the planet Mercury have had very strong erosion, possibly due to large temperature changes ranging from 623 K (350 °C) per day to 103 K (170 °C) at night.

Industrial lithium mining in Salar de Atacama, Chile, began in the mid-1990s and has expanded consistently over the last 30 years. The demand for lithium, a key ingredient in rechargeable batteries, has grown with the ubiquity of smart phones, laptop computers, electric cars and other personal electronics. Salar de Atacama contains the world’s largest and purest active source of lithium, as well as more than one-quarter of the world’s lithium reserves.

WHERE DO COSMIC RAYS COME FROM??
Blog#374
Saturday, February 10th, 2024.
Welcome back,
Earth is under constant bombardment by cosmic rays, showers of high-energy particles that blast our planet from all directions at near light speed.
While this might sound like the precursor to a sci-fi alien invasion, it is a real phenomenon that scientists have been aware of for over a century.
Tumblr media
Despite their dramatic description, cosmic rays are actually pretty ordinary — they pass through our planet so regularly that during an average night's sleep, a person will have around a million cosmic rays traveling through their body, according to the University of Birmingham in the U.K.
Despite their ubiquity, cosmic rays still present scientific mysteries. While slow-energy cosmic rays that strike Earth are known to originate from the sun, others with higher energies stream into the solar system from deep space.
Tumblr media
The origins of these extrasolar cosmic rays are lesser known, with suspect sources including black holes and the supernova explosions that mark the deaths of massive stars.
Cosmic rays "have been detected here on Earth for more than 100 years now. Yet, their origin remains largely unknown," Julia Tjus, a professor of physics and astronomy at Ruhr University in Germany, told Space.com via email.
Tumblr media
"These tiny particles reach energies that go far beyond what we can reach here on Earth. We are trying to solve a riddle that is by now more than 100 years old and put together the pieces slowly but steadily."
Cosmic rays are streams of high-energy particles that hit Earth's atmosphere at near light speed. They were discovered in the 1900s, and the term "cosmic rays" was coined by physicist Robert Millikan in 1925.
Tumblr media
Since then, scientists have determined that trillions of cosmic rays hit Earth every day, but the vast majority are blocked by the planet's magnetosphere and atmosphere.
Over 90% of cosmic rays are hydrogen nuclei  ( single protons), 9% are the atomic nuclei of helium, and 1% are the nuclei of heavy elements up to iron, according to the University of Chicago. These are called "hadronic particles" because they are composed of hadrons, like protons and neutrons, which are made up of fundamental particles called quarks.
Tumblr media
"There are also electrons and positrons [the antiparticles of electrons] coming to us in cosmic rays but in smaller numbers than the hadronic particles. These are often called cosmic-ray electrons," Tjus said. "Sometimes, people also include the neutral high-energy particles  —  photons and neutrinos  —  in the term cosmic rays, but in most definitions, these are kept separately."

"Planet of The Apes" float at the 1974 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. I really wish that I could've experienced Ape Mania as a kid because this is truly boffo. 1974-1975 was the key time when the Apes had invaded not just the big screen, but prime time TV, Saturday mornings, and toy shelves beyond, so this float was evidence of their ubiquity, Mego as its sponsor. There were even little kids -- the actual children of Mego execs -- featured aboard. It was a high point in the parade for three years until being retired in 1976 after breaking down in Herald Square.

STC Battlefield Latrine, Reclaiming, Standalone: The Linchpin of Civilization, the Battlefield Latrine Reclaiming(BLR) stands as one of Mankind's greatest creations. A common sight to any Imperial citizen, usually in standard batteries of thirteen(13) by seven(7) high. In fact, it has replaced entire sanitation, chemical refining, transportation, and tithe-collecting systems throughout the Imperium. Without its ubiquity and reclamation capabilities, the Imperial Logistics Administratum would be catastrophically limited and the war effort crippled.
Tumblr media
(Standalone shown with terrifyingly large xeno for scale)
The sight of a BLR means relief for any human(including all standard and nearly all advanced augmentations), biologically active servitor, sanctioned abhuman(including Ogryns and ratlings with standard step stool accommodations), and even many xenos regardless of status or currency. Except for mutants. They have to pay a cleansing fee.
The BLR solves so many of Humanity's needs that gifting its pattern is often sufficient to bring isolated planets into Compliance. Because of its rugged construction and virtually maintenance-free operation it is found on nearly all human settlements. The BLR is considered one of the oldest and most complete STC patterns known.
Tumblr media
(Indicator lamps show this BLR is ready for retrieval and unoccupied. Universal Pure Water and Promethium connections allow for immediate usage)
BLR tithe-credits for reclaimed water and chemical production forms a significant portion of most planetary budgets. BLR arrays in hive cities provide nearly all promethium used by local planetary defense forces, with surplus forwarded to the Mechanicus for the war effort.

It has taken an admirably long time, but finally I’ve blacklisted a media for being unbelievably bad, annoying in its ubiquity, and to a much lesser degree, upsetting to me. Peace and love on planet dashboard, where people can enjoy what they like, and I don’t have to see it so much.

Round 2B

Mars Pathfinder: Before the dark, there was light. The Mars Pathfinder was part of a NASA mission to explore the surface of Mars, and it successfully landed on the planet on July 4, 1997– really, you can’t make that date up. The mission's primary goal was to study the geology, climate, and atmosphere of Mars and to demonstrate the feasibility of low-cost lander and rover missions. The lander, named Sojourner, deployed the first-ever successful Mars rover, which conducted experiments, took photographs, and transmitted valuable data back to Earth. The mission's achievements paved the way for further advancements, and the images and data provided valuable insights into the Martian environment; this massively impacted our understanding of the planet and laid a foundation for subsequent Mars missions, such as the beloved and oft-personified Mars rovers Spirit, Opportunity, and Curiosity.
Radiohead's OK Computer: I go forwards, you go backwards, and somewhere we will meet. By the middle of the decade, Radiohead was weary of the ubiquity of their 1993 hit Creep; although the record that followed it (The Bends) was a lusher, more evolved album than their first, it had failed to produce a distinctive enough sound and image for the band to undo what Creep had done. The song threatened to define the band entirely to those outside their devoted following. In 1997 the band swung for the fences with the haunting, abstract OK Computer. It was a move their label cast immense doubt on at the time, and its success then and now would cement Thom Yorke and his bandmates as soothsayers of a sort, draped not in bohemian silk robes but in white hospital sheets. It's an album that speaks to the future with dread more than wonder, that critics described as "nervous almost to the point of neurosis," but marries the uneasy experimental soundscapes with poetic, surrealist, and increasingly prophetic songwriting regarding the parallel lives we lead with technology. Featuring the singles Karma Police, Paranoid Android and No Surprises, OK Computer is hailed by many as the band's masterpiece, and is often cited by music publications as one of the greatest albums of the decade: it's certified double Platinum in the US and five-times Platinum in the UK, and in 2014 it was included in the United States National Recording Registry as "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."

Whats your favourite bug? :O!! and why?
OH MAN. i think it comes down to either mantises or parasitoid wasps...
mantises are obviously very charismatic creatures and i am not immune. everything they do is cute and full of personality. they've got pseudopupils for coincidentally human-readible expression, and arms, and busy little mouths... i relate to the way they tilt their heads and stare at you, and groom themselves (all bugs do this cutely), and rock back and forth to appear as a leaf would. i also love the fact that they're closely related to cockroaches. you can really see the resemblence if you look for it, but it's hard to guess if you aren't told because the popular conceptions of the two are very different.
here is a modest collection of mantises i have had the pleasure of personal acquaintance with. some of them i raised myself when i was a teenager:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
my favorite ones in particular are idolomantis, for being an absurd animal, and vespamantoida wherleyi for being a wasp mimic! just as all kinds of things independently evolve mantis-type claws for their sleek utility, mantises occasionally decide to be someone else entirely...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
SPEAKING of wasps. there are a lot of incredibly striking and flashy parasitoid wasps with memorable gimmicks, like dear old ichneumon, or the emerald cockroach wasp:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
but the thing that really gets me about parasitoid wasps is the sheer number, and what they reveal about the ubiquity of parasitism as a strategy. to quote wikipedia, it is estimated that there are more species in (the ichneumon) family than there are species of birds and mammals combined. it's been suggested before (though not necessarily proven) that parasitoid wasps are the most speciose animal on the planet, despite having gone wildly underrecognized for most of entomological history.
that's because most of them are miniscule and mysterious. as parasites, they spend a notable portion of their lives hiding inside of other things, and to hide inside of something else, you have to be small. really small. the smallest, in fact. amoeba sized!
and let's say, hypothetically, that for every unique insect, at least one unique parasite evolves to match... well, even the parasitoid wasps have their own, smaller parasitoid wasps.
i'm so compelled by parasitism in large part because of the emotion it evokes in a human audience, how easily people borrow it as a metaphor for our relationships and social dynamics, and then project that emotional signifigance back onto parasitic animals; the parasitic wasp is confounded too with the perception of wasps as scary, dangerous, or pests. and yet, unseen, these things are everywhere! a huge (small) part of the world.

Chinese New Year: A Global Festival Beyond Asia
Every year, when the first new moon of the lunar calendar begins to wax, a wave of red lanterns, firecrackers, and jubilant parades sweeps over not just Asia but cast its crimson glow across the world. Chinese New Year, also known as Lunar New Year or Spring Festival, is a vibrant and soulful celebration deeply ingrained in Chinese culture and heritage, yet its grandeur resonates with millions globally. Let's embark on a fascinating journey to witness how this majestic festival paints the town red, all around the planet!
The Universal Appeal of Tradition
Tradition doesn't just reside within geographic boundaries; it transcends them. Chinese New Year is a testament to this as communities from Sydney to San Francisco, London to Lagos, come together to embrace the spirit of renewal, hope, and prosperity that the festival signifies. It's a time when the ancient rituals and colorful folklore of the East blend seamlessly with the diverse cultures and modern vibes of cities around the world.
Celebrations Around the Globe
Imagine the thunderous beats of drums and the sharp clack of clashing cymbals; feel the exhilaration as the Dragon Dance snakes its way through the bustling streets of Chinatowns everywhere! From Asia to the farthest reaches of the West, these iconic traditions have found a home, bringing with them a splash of culture and an invitation to communal feasting and reflection.
In Malaysia and Singapore, the streets come alive with decorations and performances, while families gather for the "reunion dinner," embracing the core values of family and community. Meanwhile, in the heart of London, a mesmerizing parade draws thousands, witnessing a fusion of English and Chinese festivities.
Across the Pacific, North America holds its own with cities like New York, Vancouver, and San Francisco hosting grand events - their Chinatowns pulsating with life and festivity, transforming the environs into a microcosm of the East.
A Time for Renewal and Prosperity
As we ring in the New Year with good food and vibrant celebrations, let’s not forget the underlying promise of a fresh start. This is a time to sweep away any ill-fortune and welcome incoming good luck with open arms and hearts full of ambition.
Delving into Diverse Practices
While the essence of Chinese New Year remains constant, local flavors and customs lend each celebration its own unique twist. In Indonesia, it's a national holiday reflective of the country's recognition of cultural diversity. The Philippines, with its considerable Chinese population, revels in street parties and sumptuous feasts celebrating both cultural harmony and delicious gastronomy!
Embracing the Future
As we joyously participate in these world celebrations, let us also remember the profound lessons they impart. These global festivities of Chinese New Year highlight the beauty of cultural exchange and the power of tradition to unite different peoples under the banner of shared celebration. The ubiquity of the festival underscores the universal themes of hope, resurgence, and the communal joy of ushering in better days.
Conclusion
As the brilliant fireworks dissolve into the night sky the world over, Chinese New Year stands as a glistening reminder that joy, much like the full moon, is round and complete when shared. So, no matter where you find yourself when the next Chinese New Year dawns, remember that you're part of a worldwide cadre who's celebrating not just a tradition rooted in time, but the ever-growing tree of human connection. Here's to a New Year filled with happiness, health, and prosperity. Oh, and don't forget to share your festivities with us. Tag us, and let's paint social media red with the splendor of Chinese New Year - together!
Remember, it's not just a festival; it's a global phenomenon that underscores our unity as a global village, festively tied with the reddest of strings. Join in the revelry, indulge in the spirit, and experience the magnificence that is Chinese New Year, wherever you may be. Gung Hay Fat Choy!

This is actually a positive post for once.
Anyway, I really love humanity and it's all because of that goddamn S symbol children have scrawled over their notebooks for decades now. Let me explain.
Okay to head some of this off at the pass: I'm aware of the singular explanations. Specifically the Stussy thing, the "superman logo", etc. I just watched this video by LEMMiNO which I think has some pretty good theories, including some I hadn't heard of before. Using a single source for all my info on this ... generally not good ... but legit this is a thing about a doodle I used to do. If you're interested, you can certainly leap into the rabbit hole.
So anyway, stuff I hadn't heard before: How the S was a popular way to stylize an S in graffiti. This shit has been around since at least the 1800s as seen in a book by a princeton professor. Some people in the comments section had found examples of the general pattern being used in paintings as far back as the 1500s.
My fascination is with the ubiquity of it, and people's intensive, yet ultimately fruitless, attempts to find a single point of origin for the pattern. How people don't even remember how they even started doodling it. They say "I learned it from a friend who learned it from another friend who learned it from another friend ... who idk who he learned it from".
Honestly? The simplest answer really is: as humans, and especially as bored children, we love doodling shit. We love making our silly little patterns in the margins of notebooks. And (as referenced in the video) - humanity's had a long and proud history of just making intricate and repeating patterns out of things because it looks nice.
And that simplest answer: that it likely just developed organically with no real singular source. I don't know, it's just kind of having a profound affect on me. Yes I'm philosophizing about a doodle.
It feels profound to me because we live on this huge ass planet with 8 billion other people. However, no matter where we are, we all make our silly little doodles and at some point, someone comes up with the fucking "S" and teaches it to their entire class. It's very pleasing to draw, very easy to draw, and it looks really cool so of course people are going to doodle it literally everywhere. My notebooks were filled with that damn S and also a bunch of zigzag designs (shout out to my english professor for calling me out on that by calling me the "Zig Zag Queen of the Front Table" I wear that title proudly).
My other fascination with the S phenomenon is that we're always looking for an explanation as to why something happened. We always need a story, a neat little narrative. My writer brain goes off about how the S could be some occult symbol being subconsciously implanted by a slumbering eldritch god who's just waiting to be summoned by some 5th grader in Chadron, Nebraska. Or y'know ... Stussy I guess.
I mean think about the pyramids and all the (granted: incredibly racist and colonialist) theories about that*. Oh yes. The reason why civilizations on different continents who had absolutely zero interactions with each other made pyramids is because aliens did it. It's definitely got nothing to do with the fact that we all, fundamentally, likely have similar thought processes and reasoning: Thing with giant base = super duper stable = I can make a huge ass structure out of this. And we all like making giant buildings to worship, it's like fundamental to human existence that we've gotta make big shit and leave our mark.
But that's not interesting, that doesn't seem fulfilling, it doesn't seem complete. It can't be that we're a lot more connected than we all realize. It's gotta be the goddamn aliens. Or Stussy.
-
*I want to plainly express that those theories are incredibly racist and are rooted in the general colonialist BS about how those civilizations couldn't possibly be "smart" or "developed" enough or whatever. We can't forget that fact. This is definitely an entrenched belief that's still doing harm to this day and people need to fucking stop. Just because I mentioned I was "fascinated" about a particular aspect of human nature doesn't make me any less disgusted by the fucking "aliens" theory.

Kyle Chayka is a founding editor of Dirt. This essay is drawn from his new book Filterworld: How Algorithms Flattened Culture
Welcome to Filterworld
Kyle Chayka writes, “Our personal desires are constantly being anticipated, served in advance, and perhaps thus undercut.”
Tumblr media
"it only matters that you’re still watching and clicking, building a map of your interests that make you more targetable. It’s long past time that we realized these systems are not benefitting culture. Creators and consumers alike are pushed into preset formats that we may ultimately have no organic interest in. By giving in to algorithmic feeds, we are letting tech companies determine our tastes.
Flatness, like scalability, is efficient. The same culture flows through the same pipes to the same net-average consumer. But since when did efficiency become the sole metric by which we judge art? Filterworld represents the idea that the messiness of culture can be optimized and that only what is optimized for shareability is worthwhile. I disagree."

The tyranny of the algorithm: why every coffee shop looks the same 16 Jan 2024
From the generic hipster cafe to the ‘Instagram wall’, the internet has pushed us towards a kind of global ubiquity – and this phenomenon is only going to intensify
"YouTube, founded in 2005, allowed anyone with a powerful enough internet connection to upload and share video clips. Instagram followed in 2010 and created a larger culture of sharing snapshots from newly mainstream iPhone cameras."
“Globalisation takes place only in capital and data,” the literary theorist Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak has written. “Everything else is damage control.” We talk about politics, culture and travel becoming globalised, but on a more fundamental level, Spivak is correct that what really flows across the planet are various forms of money and information: investments, corporations, infrastructure, server farms and the combined data of all the digital platforms, sluicing invisibly like wind or ocean currents between nations. We users voluntarily pumped our own information through this system, turning ourselves into flowing commodities, too.
This homogenisation is not just a phenomenon of our own moment; it is a consequence of changes that happened long before algorithmic social media feeds, and is just as likely to intensify in the future. After all, each time a grand flattening is announced the world somehow finds a way to get even flatter."

Origin of Syntropic Agriculture
Syntropic Agriculture is an economical cultivating approach that tackles the standards of syntropy (an intrinsic tendency of a shut framework to independently organize, design, and advance in intricacy), which alludes to the regular tendency of a shut framework to independently orchestrate, construction, and advance in intricacy. Starting in Brazil a long time back and acquiring ubiquity in nations like Australia, this strategy draws motivation from crafted by Mr. Ernst Götsch, a Swiss rancher and scientist.
Syntropic Agriculture includes an extensive cultivating technique that coordinates standards got from permaculture, regenerative cultivating, and regular cultivating into a strong system. Its center spotlight is on the development of lumber and food timberlands, with a definitive goal of reforesting the planet. At Hosachiguru-oversaw farmlands, we are enthusiastically dedicated to teaming up with our co-ranchers in the production of agroforests and food backwoods, as a feature of our main goal to add to a greener and more practical future.
Not at all like current farming methodologies, Syntropic Agriculture focuses on soil wellbeing and follows adaptable standards roused naturally's working. By embracing the intricacies of regular biological systems, it looks to emulate their regenerative cycles. This complete way to deal with economical land the board lays out amicable cultivating frameworks for people and the climate, offering a versatile and environmentally sound farming practice.
