Jadhavrao (father of Jijamata) accompanied Jijamata to Shivneri with a cavalry of 500. Shivaji Maharaj was born in 1630 when Shahaji Maharaj was in a distress.

Shivaji Maharaj left this fort in 1632 and it went into the hands of Mughals in 1637. In 1650, the local fishermen refuted against them. The folks lost to the rulers and were assassinated cruelly on the fort. In 1678, the Marathas raided Junnar, but attempt to capture Shivneri was futile. Shahu Maharaj brought the fort under his control forty years later. Later it was under the control of Peshwas.

Saputara Hill Station

A picturesque hill station located 1000 m above the sea level with a nice bracing cool climate, Saputara is located in the forest region of Dangs of Sahyadari Ranges. The ambiance is very cool through out the seasons and the maximum temperature experienced here is 28 degrees in summer months. ‘Saputara’ means the ‘abode of serpents’ and a snake image on the banks of the river Sarpagana is worshipped by the ‘adivasis’ (tribals) on festivals like Holi.

As per the Hindu mythology, Lord Ram spent his 11 years of exile in the dense forests of Saputara. There is a deity of a serpent (snake) placed on the banks of the river Sarpaganga. Local tribal folks pay worship to this serpent god and celebrate festivals like Holi. Saputara is enriched with natural relics and bio diversity, with awesome climate of chilly air and the terrains covered with mists in the evenings.

Saputara By Air Mumbai Chatrapati Shivaji International airport, which is 360 km away from Saputara, is the nearest airport. All the major airlines have service from Mumbai to all major cities in India and many cities abroad including Singapore, Hong Kong, Colombo and gulf countries. Taxis are available from Mumbai to Saputara and costs about Rs 7000.

Saputara By Train Waghai railway station is about 50 km away from Saputara city center. This station is directly connected with Mumbai and regular train services are available from here to many cities in India. Taxis are also available in the railway station and fare is about Rs 900 to the heart of the city.
