Kinder Morgan Pipeline Expansion

Precedents
May 6, 2009: A sizeable spill was discovered at the company's Burnaby Mountain tank farm, with almost 200,000 litres leaking out into the facility.
January 24, 2012: A pipeline rupture at the Sumas Mountain tank farm spilled an estimated 110,000 litres of oil. Local residents reported health problems including nausea, headaches and fatigue, and schoolchildren were kept indoors for fear of airborne toxins.
April 3, 2012: Another spill in a "containment area" at the Abbotsford Sumas Mountain facility caused nuisance odors and air quality concerns in surrounding communities.
June 12, 2013: A leak was discovered on the Kinder Morgan pipeline near Merritt, BC.
June 26, 2013: Just two weeks after the spill near Merritt, yet another leak was discovered – this time spilling 17,800 litres of oil at a site near the Coquihalla Summit, about 40 km east of Hope, BC.
Challenges:
If the proposed pipeline is implemented, the likelihood of a spill in the Burrard Inlet over fifty years lies at 79-87% for any size spill (Trans Mountain Assessment Report, p. 66)
Smaller spills (1,000 barrels) are very likely
There is a 37% chance of a larger spill (10,000 barrels) over fifty years
There is a 29% likelihood of a worst-case spill (100,000 barrels) over fifty years
Approximately 980 km of new pipeline will be constructed, and the space will be shared with the environment.
In addition, studies have shown that land-based spills can contaminate groundwater for many years and at distances up to thousands of meters from the spill source.
Diluted bitumen is toxic to marine life, difficult to clean up and likely to persist for decades in water, beaches, sediment, and entire marine environments.
Potential Solutions
If the expansion were to go through we believe that to protect the environment and those living nearby, the government must place a law that limits the number of ships moving through the inlet per day. This can deteriorate the number of collisions if there are too many cargo ships moving together in the inlet.
Currently, most pipelines use “smart pigs” which are inspection gauges and they can detect corrosion on pipelines and is relied for leak detection. A SCADA System is also used is used to gather data and information on the pipeline such as flow rate and etc.
A recently new method of cleaning oil spills is called Enzymatic Bioremediation. Enzymatic Bioremediation is a solution which. When applied to a hazardous chemical spill, a natural remediation process is activated immediately in ocean, fresh water or land based environments. This process works in alignment with natural laws with no negative environmental tradeoffs. The remedy is capable of completely removing oil and gas related chemicals in any type of environment.
Data Types
The proposed expansion will triple the capacity to move crude oil, from 48,000 to 142,000 cubic metres per day (300,000 to 890,000 barrels).14 Most of the product (~70%) is for export by tanker or barge. This will require a significant increase in marine shipping activity. Westridge Marine Terminal currently receives approximately five Aframax-class tankers per month (60/year). With expansion, the number of tankers loaded will increase sevenfold, to about 34 per month (408/year).
Additional infrastructure inside the Consultation Area includes more storage at the Burnaby Tank Farm: there will be 27 large tanks instead of 13. Capacity will more than triple, from 255,000 to 875,000 cubic metres.
