okay this is my current favourite ansi escape code it is DECDHL and its neighbours, all of which change how wide or tall text is in a terminal. it allows for double height, double width (seen below, top command), or double width (bottom command). you may be wondering why there are two ansi codes in the top command, and that is due to how DECDHL works. you need two separate lines

microsoft terminal (what im being forced to use for this due to it best rendering this ansi code) renders the following when the two lines do not match, split down the middle. this is quite a cool effect and could probably be used for something interesting, but it wouldn't likely render the same across every terminal.

wezterm (my terminal of choice) renders the command as so - instead of rendering each half of the lines, it just renders the top line scaled 2x. it also does not render at a higher pixel size ): this is likely due to how wezterm caches their glyphs, which makes it fast, but means this sort of thing happens:

these commands were first introduced by the vt100 and would have been very useful for computers that couldn't do much else apart from render text i would write a bit on how the vt100 rendered all of this, but i cannot find any solid information on it. im assuming for horizontal it just draws the scan dots longer, but vertical is where it gets iffy i did find this article though, which while not too informative did give some leads https://www.masswerk.at/nowgobang/2019/dec-crt-typography

another thing i must say is that i barely see this in use today, which is quite sad because it's really useful for many sorts of cli and tui applications, and has been supported right from the start in vt100; the golden standard for terminals today
