Dark Tomb: The Aesthetic

(I have decided to rebrand the Dark Fantasy idea as Dark Tomb, to make it a little easier to understand.)

This is hard to explain beyond just saying "fantasy". So I'll take a few screenshots that I think show the vibe I'm looking for.

These images are from Morrowind, Dark Messiah, Mystery of the Druids, and Limbo of the Lost (though Limbo is entirely made from stolen assets from other games, so that does complicate things). The aesthetic is pretty interesting - it looks generic on the surface, but I think it's cool. Stone, torches, wrought iron, statues, skulls, altars. Interestingly, I often have dreams taking place in ornate stone structures with cascading water in them (see bottom image) - the most recent one was on the 8th of February, where a medieval ruin near where I live was fully constructed, housing multiple pools, cisterns and aqueducts for "water puzzles", whatever they were. It's something I like both consciously and subconsciously, and a lot of this aesthetic probably comes from the time period.

I want to say that fantasy games looking like this peaked around 2006. I've noticed the look in many games: Dark Souls comes to mind especially, though I didn't attach any screenshots. Think of the technological processes popularly used at the time: bloom, baked-in lighting, photo-sourced textures, bump mapping, et cetera. It gives everything a very distinct look. I've thought about how I could capture it with Unreal 5 without spending ages coding some whole new lighting engine. If I use Quixel Bridge assets, I think i'll import them in the lowest possible quality, so they look like they're from a slightly older game. I also want to use a lot of coloured lighting. Torches will give off a warm red-orange glow, while mystical bodies of water will fill the room with a scintillating blue-green light from below. This focus on colours is mostly to contrast with the greys and browns of the environment; otherwise, everything would blend together and be uninteresting. I mean, there is the other end of the spectrum.

These screenshots are from a game called Sacrifice, an RTS that flopped incredibly hard, and is thus very obscure. The whole thing is surreal fantasy, inspired by Hieronymus Bosch. Now I'm not a massive fan of Bosch, but I did research him a little for the FMP, and there's a reason that it looks so strange.

I mean, just LOOK AT IT! There's people being skinned alive and disembowled and thrown into fire, and there's a reason for that. This art was meant to put the fear of god (literally) into the average Renaissance person who wasn't afraid of hell anymore. These paintings are meant to show what Bosch thought hell would look like, and I admit, if I ended up here, I wouldn't be too happy about it. Sacrifice's story is about demons tearing the world into floating islands and corrupting all the creatures into melted abominations, so the look is still consistent. However, if you look back to the Sacrifice screenshots, you can see how the game uses coloured lighting to make the environment look infinitely more interesting. Pink torches, red fire, blue altars, purple orbs, they come together and give the game a very distinct look, and on an objective level, they brighten up what is otherwise a very brown landscape.

Pretty sure we're nowhere near technologically advanced enough for pink doom lasers so I'm sure those must be coming from... Artificer, maybe?

Got some corpses decorating the floor. I'm impressed that other people have managed to infiltrate this place and die trying, despite it being located in a lightning bolt. You'd think having Lightning Bolt for your mailing address would be enough to keep solicitors out.

Also, the statues' eyes are glowing so I think they're alive.

In any case, my first order of business:

To be honest, I wanted clean pants. But seeing you is a secondary benefit, to be sure!

We made it to the top of the mountain and I did a very good job of delivering the mail so I think I'm the Time Messiah now? Didn't get to fight anything cool though and you were there for a lot of the climb so there's not much else to tell.

How's work been treating you? Keeping your nose to the grindstone?

So the devices in this place function via boppable power switches. Sure, that makes sense. The important thing is that they're color-coordinated. Pink crystals for pink lasers.

Honestly, love the aesthetic here. The deadly, deadly aesthetic.

By the way, I've been meaning to ask but is that the Fleshmancer in that cage over there? Because that definitely looks like Fleshmancer gook.

You know, when you tell it that way, it makes the moon sound overconfident in her own power. Arrogant, even. Like, she knew it was dangerous; She wore the cloak specifically to avoid exactly the kind of altercation she invited when she removed it.

But she just couldn't help herself. Throwing herself into harm's way on the spur of the moment and then dealing with whatever consequences come her way after the fact... that does sound like her but you make it sound like a flaw somehow.

At the same time, this story speaks to the value of the meager human (like me!). These peasants were just ordinary men and women but working together, they could perform even greater deeds than the moon could alone. That's something that is reflected in Luana's fables through the story of the Warrior Cook.

you know you know that’s really shitty, but you feel the need to put all you can in it and you get drained and can’t keep going sometimes. its like the break charges you up so then your back to giving him your all and it repeats. it sucks, but he loves you and you feel even more douchy at the idea of telling him you can’t do it anymore, ever, after yanking his chain for this long.

you...don’t want that for kankri. your at a 50% charge right now on romancing least flushed wise, you never tried the other quad’s before. what if he wants flushed? you can’t do that you’d lose him if you pulled what you do to horrus on him cause you really kinda, don’t know how to stop or talk about it.

Altared Perspective: The Baby Pagan’s Guide to Crystal Usage

Good afternoon, lovies!

With classes moved online, I’ve had much more time to reflect on and invest in my spiritual upkeep. (Procrastinating my homework has nothing to do with it, *gulp* I swear.) The aesthetics I’ve stumbled upon whilst browsing social media brought to my attention the unseemly clutter on my own home altar, and in the spirit of springtime, I organized the holy hades out of it. Going through the used and unused items that had been sitting on that table for months and months, I thought to myself, How could I have avoided making this mess in the first place?

For anyone else who may have an interest in the subject, I hope to provide some answers by creating a simple start-up guide to pagan rituals.

Before moving on, I’d like to clarify: I am not Wiccan. I have no qualms with Wicca, and I find the practice quite interesting, but my heart simply isn’t in it. That being said, practitioners of Wicca may also find this pagan post interesting.

1. Foundation and location.

Foundation: Before you begin, you’ll need a place to set up. There are many creative, unique options for getting started: tree stumps, wooden chests, family furniture passed down from generation to generation. If you’re a first-gen pagan on a budget, as I am, you can just as easily use any plain old table. And size doesn’t matter! Just as long as you can fit everything you need. My table is 2′ wide and 4′ long.

Location: When you have a surface picked out, you’ll of course need somewhere to put it. Most rituals are performed with the practitioner facing north, so if possible, set your altar against a northern wall of your home, preferably next to a window so that your items can soak up the natural light. If you’d rather it be outdoors, just be certain to protect your set-up from the elements (weather, animals, etc.).

2. Crystals and stones

Crystals are the fruits of the earth and the tears of the gods, and as such, each possesses different properties ranging from physical healing to good luck and safe travel. Even in just the short time that I’ve been using them, they have made a tremendous difference in my life. The catch is, there are so many that it can get to be overwhelming - so here’s a good way to start.

Begin with chakra crystals. They’re often sold in sets from $10-20, and their ROY G BIV color scheme makes them easy to navigate. Here's a brief description of each:

a. Red jasper

Red stones represent fire and amplify passion and drive. As a crystal of the day, red jasper means to go for exactly what you want and not to take ‘no’ for an answer. 

b. Orange calcite

Orange stones represent physiological health, specifically intestinal and digestive health. As a crystal of the day, orange calcite is telling you to be careful what you ingest.

c. Gold tigers eye

 Gold and yellow stones represent wealth and prosperity, and are used in many rituals to improve finances. As a crystal of the day, tigers eye promises a lucky bargain or a great deal - but proceed with caution.

d. Green aventurine

Green is the color of luck in all areas of life. As a crystal of the day, aventurine encourages you to take an extra risk - it’s far, far more likely to go well.

e. Blue sodalite

Blue stones, especially sodalite, promote wisdom and intellectual strength. As a crystal of the day, blue sodalite encourages you to gather all the facts before proceeding.

f. Amethyst

Purple stones represent peace - and amethyst is one of the queen mothers of crystals. As a crystal of the day, amethyst discourages conflict, especially at home. It’s also used to recharge and cleanse other crystals after frequent use or when passing from one person or place to another.

g. Clear quartz

The other queen mother of crystals, quartz is excellent for warding against harmful spirits and negative energy. As a crystal of the day, clear quartz tells you to stay optimistic.

EXTRA: Rose quartz

Rose quartz, like other pink crystals, amplifies the gentle, loving, nurturing nature in humans and animals. Pale pink combined with the powerful protection of quartz crystal, rose quartz is ideal when placed along window sills and other openings to the home.

3. Additional items

There are many parts to a pagan altar. To complete your set-up effectively, let’s go over a few of the other basics.

a. Candles

The color of a candle, when it matches the color of your crystal(s), amplifies the effects. Above is my rose quartz pendant soaking in the light of a bright pink candle, amplifying my sense of peace and affection towards my family and theirs towards me. Even on its own, an open flame above colored oils and waxes carries heavy significance.

b. Tablecloth or tile

Also called a pentacle, the most common of which is the famous pentagram, or five-pointed star. They’re usually 2′x2′, and placed in the center of the altar for performing of rituals and spells. Although the pentagram is popular, it’s not completely necessary - anything with spiritual significance will suffice: moon phase tapestries, Tarot cloths or tiles, astrological glyphs, and so on. My talisman is a tablecloth covering the entire surface of my altar, with a sun-and-moon circled by the heavenly bodies in the center. It makes for easy organization/placement of my items, too.

c. Chalice or bowl (or both)

While there are many Wiccan rituals involving use of a chalice, I like to use mine for crystal waters and elixirs. Some hear the word chalice and picture a luxurious, ornate cup befitting of the Messiah, but really, all you need is something that can hold liquid. I use translucent, reflective glass set atop a reflective plate so that the contents will better absorb the light.

d. Caldron

Most commonly used for burning incense and mixing potions. Incense can be used for blessings, rituals, and spells, but I most frequently use my caldron for burning sage (more on that later). PS: I bought both the above-mentioned items at the local Goodwill. There’s no need to bust your budget on your altar. :)

e. Dried herbs or plants.

Some pagans decorate their space with live plants, but I always end up killing mine, so I stick with the stuff that’s already supposed to be dead. Sage is my first choice because of its cleansing properties. (Be warned, though; it smells exactly like weed.)

f. Storage

It helps to keep a small chest, box, or lidded dish for storing your crystal and stones when you’re not using them. I also like to keep additional crystals in drawstring bags on a shelf for easy organization with small vials for elixirs.

4. Organize!

Now that you have all your items in order, it’s time to get set up!

Each of the four directions represents one of the four basic elements: North / Earth, South / Fire, West / Water, East / Air. Place a red candle facing south and a green candle opposite, and a blue candle west and a white or yellow candle opposite. Candle holders and displays are optional, just so long as you’re careful not to make a waxy mess.

The rest of the set-up is completely up to you!

As an example, here’s a complete image of mine:

In the dead-center is an amethyst for constant cleansing and rejuvenation of all other items; beneath it is clear quartz pointing inward. I switched my green candle with turquoise for an intellectual boost. Above the amethyst is a Celtic cross talisman, symbolic of my Irish-Celtic roots.

You might be thinking, Great, where am I gonna get all this crap? It’s surprising how affordable these things can be. I mentioned before that I bought my caldron, chalice, and bowl at Goodwill. I got a few of the candle holders at the thrift shop, a few at Target for $1-3, and the fancier ones at Hobby Lobby. Hobby Lobby is also where I buy most of my candles. (How ironic that a Christian-owned business has been supplying my pagan needs, eh?) The table is from Walmart, the tablecloth from Amazon. Altogether, the entirety of my altar cost maybe $100 over the course of a couple months.

A few last-ditch tips:

Avoid clutter.

If you’re not using it for rituals or spells, keep it off the altar.

Prioritize your items by importance.

And last but not least, if you have a cat, you will not be able to keep him/her off your table. Believe me, I’ve tried. Everything.

So already as the songs go surprisingly the videos fits them pretty well enough that the same opinions applies now that the MV are all out: Stella still steals he show.

And I’m biased, i am aware, but let’s be real. 

The rest of the songs by virtue of their format and what they were saying were pretty straight forward - especially with the idea of the trunk blasing music from this season with Hoodstar that is in every of the songs. So the Bros doing a radio show, the Crew parading in Yokohama, and the Wolves in sort of holidays it’s still very anchored into reality. 

By being a fiction Stella broke the format and took full advantage of it. First with the drawing narrations, then with the space motif, the representation of all the planets the three come from, the gradial presence of colors, which are the colors Gentaro identified the team as in Hoodstar (Red/Green/Blue), (Blue Grey for the “monochrome” of Dice, Green for Gentaro’s crystal planet, their duet when Gentaro “gets taken by his messiah” making the space Green/Blue, then Ramuda’s verse is red/pink, then the green and blue surrounding the pink light from the planet until they can actually breaks down its wall and Ramuda can expand with them, as their colors become more and more vibrant)  - all the aesthetics come back in the MV. And then there’s the parts in Shibuya, those that are just like the rest of the bands and they are... fantastic. Even more so since the “plot” ends with thethree of them banding together so “Ramuda can find his homeland again” and so the return to Shibuya with the colors that they allowed themselves to develop by the whole song is so touching. First the colors are stunning, second, the paper flying to remind that it is a story? Poetry. And the signalization panels, with the “always going forward” motif, “direction > Stella, no u-turn” is such a nice touch.

At this point it’s very hard for me to be unbiased and i am aware but the editting and stuff from Stella, especially compared to the other three is just freaking fantastic.  Everything about Stella is just so goddamn gorgeous and the MV, while it could have so easily be limited by the “music trunk” the others were limited by.

The others vibes work very well in their videos and all, but jfc Stella man. Stella.

That said i’m really happy the new season’s songs are available fully on youtube and not just on preview. I suppose perhaps with the first season they established their popularity enough that they can get money from the youtube chanel so they can allow to post the full songs and that’s neat.

Own understanding - The town hall venue seems very upperclass, glam and fancy. The interior definitely gave off these connations.

Experiences - Hannah’s concert experience; The town hall was a weird space to have a concert as Hot Chelle Rae was headlining and It was a dancey concert so the music didn’t match the aesthetic of the place. The seat layout was good but not suitable for a standing concert.

Findings: When I visited the site it was sunny blue skies and reflected the white cream walls and made it really bright and new. The other side was covered in scaffolding so I did not take any photos but you could look through the windows and I could see dust/rubbish scattered inside possibly from the workers. From the civic square, it was sunny and warm construction workers were around. Professionals were eating their lunch, soaking the sun and pigeon poop was present everywhere.
