“POLICE CHIEF KILLS A BANDIT,” Hamilton Spectator. March 14, 1931. Page 15. ---- Bullets Fly in Outskirts of Vancouver City --- Escaped Convict Gives Up When Pal Shot ---- Vancouver, March 13 - Defiant in the face of threatened arrest, Ellis Wilcox, 21-year-old bandit, was shot dead to-day on the outskirts of Vancouver after a gun battle with police. Fraser McDougall, aged 25, who made a spectacular escape from Oakalla prison with Wilcox eight days ago, surrendered as his mate dropped in death agony.

Wilcox died as he was being rushed to the home of a near-by doctor within a few moments after he had been shot down by Chief of Police W. J. Devitt, of Burnaby, Vancouver suburb, accompanied by two constables. Chief Devitt had rushed to the spot near the Vancouver-Burnaby line, where it had been reported that two men in a small automobile were hiding in the bush.

Armed with a rifle, Chief Devitt ordered the bandits to surrender. Wilcox drew a revolver and fired, but dropped under a charge from the policeman's rifle, which pierced his stomach. McDougall dodged behind the bandits' car, which had been stolen after their escape from jail, and pointed, his revolver at the chief. He threw up his hands in surrender, however, when Chief Devitt fired another shot, which hit the machine.

Charge of attempted murder will be laid against McDougall for his part in the gun fight, according to Chief Devitt. The young bandit was first taken to Burnaby jail, but was later removed to Oakalla prison by provincial police.

FINED FOR CRUELTY Brockville, March 13-Burton Baxter, of Glen Buell, was fined $25 and costs to-day by Magistrate Wright of a charge of wantonly ill treating a mare by leaving the animal lying on the ground between four and five hours. The animal being unable to rise, it was alleged he placed a chain around its neck and dragged it almost half a mile. A Brockville Humane society in spector drove to Glen Buell to investigate the case, and found the mare in such condition that its de struction was necessary.

Prompt: Brian dating his favorite smartass (reader)

Your head is snapped back as someones knuckles meet your nose. "Motherfucker!" You yell, now lurching forward.

Your nose is gushing with blood, your lip is busted and you have more than a couple cuts and bruises. You charge to your target, swinging your fist to the side of their head.

That's when Brian fell in full. He'd never met you, never spoke a single word to you. But that was it. Your hunched, bloody, pissed off form is what drug him in. The way your eyes were piercing, nothing but rage running rampet through them.

You swung again, and again. Battering them.

They started to waver from side to side.

As you were going to swing again, someone pinned you to the ground, trying to break up the fight.

"Let me go! Get the fuck off me! Get off!" You screamed from under the other person, struggling to get out of the lock. Your limbs moved with rapid succession, your legs trying to kick them off of you.

Eventually they did get off of you. You laid on the ground, just looking at the pale sky above you. Clouds thin in the atmosphere. Clear air that you couldn't smell due to a pungent, metallic smell polluting your nose.

After watching you sit there for a moment, Brian decided to approach you. He watched as your chest wasn't rising and falling as quick, as the adrenaline coursing through your veins slowed to a stop.

He walks over to you, bending down right next to you. And then his face popped up in your vision.

A pale faced, black haired boy who had served you once at Mickey's. The one who looked like he hated his job.

You got it, you also hated your job.

"You look like hell. I got some stuff that will help, maybe." Brian says. You examine your options.

Walk home, explain why you're dirtied up again, and then crash on your mattress without cleaning up. Or hang with this cute boy who has things for you, and potentially score a friend.

You decided on the latter.

"Sure. Help me up." You say.

Brian gets up and offers you a hand. Your hand wraps around his, he then pulls you off the ground.

In silence, the two of you made way to his shitbox of a car. But hey, the air conditioner works.

Brian starts the car, you get in the backseat. He climbs into the backseat.

It takes him a moment, but he fishes a first aid kit from the floor of his car.

Brian isn't very good at first aid, but the effort is appreciated. Through the 30 minutes it takes him to really get you fixed up, you two talk.

While he's dabbing the blood and grime off your face with a wet cloth, he sees how your eyes flicker to his lips.

But hey, he wasn't complaining!

Time flows, per usual. The hot summer months melt into fall. And your affection for Brian only grows.

You've taught him a lot! Taught him how to defend himself, reasons to stand up for himself.

And you've gotten into countless fights for him. You've cussed out a teacher for sending Brian to the office over a hallpass. He heard words sound out from you that he never would've heard.

They were creative though, he'll give you thay.

You've beat up someone because they tossed his bookbag onto a deep pothole filled with dirty water, and more.

He really appreciates it. It pushes his crush for you to only grow stronger as it gets colder outside.

When he got in his first fight, he was the winner. Due to your instructions and fighting intelligence, he won. You also told him it was because of his willpower and his strength. He chose to ignore that part too.

His parents said you were a bad influence. Brian got into more trouble, but he also felt himself starting to believe in something.

Your praises after he got into a fight were also something he treasured. The feeling of your hands on his face, cupping his cheek while you cleaned his face up.

And then, one or the worst fights you'd been had happened. You won, per usual. But you weren't walking out, you were limping out.

You sputter and cough, heaving for air on the ground. Several blows to the stomach will do that to you.

Brian rushes over, and he practically slides to the ground.

He heard wind that a fight had broke out infront of the school. He went to go grab you so you guys could maybe help. But then he looked out of the window. And you were out there.

He puts your head into his lap, looking at you with worry. Your eyes make your way to his, you offer a weak smile to melt his fear.

"Brian.. did I ever tell you that you're the reason I fight? The reason I rush into fights, and it's not cause I'm a idiot. I'm terrified everytime fucking I take a swing, like everyone else. But.. you pull me through it. I think I'm in love with you. Shit, there's just something about you man." You say, now coughing.

"Hey, hey. Stay awake, okay? I like you too. You just need to focus on staying the fuck awake." Brian says. Your hands reach up, and you pull him down.

His lips connect with yours. Blood meets his, but it's a heavy embrace that he doesn't want to walk away from. How you're holding his face, how you're leading him through.

You pull away. "I'm not going anywhere, just.. motherfucker.. Let's stay here for a minute."

After that, you two were smooth sailing. People didn't pick fights with Brian, nor bully him, which in return kept you out of trouble as well.

On 31 July 1925, she entered Norfolk Navy Yard for a major modernization overhaul. The overhaul, which replaced both cage masts with tripod masts, replaced her 14 Babcock & Wilcox coal-fired boilers with 6 Bureau Express oil-fired boilers, and upgraded her fire-control equipment, was completed on 23 November 1926. Also, her AA armament was increased to eight 3-inch guns, and the torpedo tubes were removed. Six of the 5-inch guns were relocated to new main deck case-mates at this time.

 Smart-mouthed, openly opinionated, and with an apparent lack of volume, Munch quickly cements himself as the class clown in any group. He enjoys living in the moment, a truly free spirit with an infectious energy. He is the textbook extrovert, finding himself to be bored out of his mind if not sharing with others, leading him to have quite the large group of friends and acquaintances. He’s notorious for poking fun at anything and anyone, but has no problem sincerely apologizing once he realizes he might have taken something too far. 

As a hero, Munch takes after his namesake, the Yellow Jacket wasp. Quick, nimble, and particularly aggressive, Jacket revels in the comic book hero lifestyle of kicking butts and taking names. His energy blasts aren’t his only weapons, he has as much fun slinging insults and burns as he does physically taking someone down. He certainly enjoys the attention of being a hero in a celebrity sense, but Jacket sees his role as a chance to inspire others to fight the good fight in any capacity. 

Hot-blooded as he is, Munch struggles with controlling his emotions. He can be easily frustrated, especially when things aren’t as straight-foward as he is, and blisteringly fierce when angered. It takes an ungodly amount of coaxing to get him to let go of past grudges due to his tendency of being bullheaded. 

 ABILITIES AND WEAKNESSES

Metahuman Biology: Metahumans by standard are more durable than humans. While not by much, Jacket exhibits increased strength, speed, reflexes and resilience. 

Plasma Manipulation: Jacket’s metagene allows him to create, shape, and otherwise manipulate plasma matter

Plasma “Stingers”: By shooting short blasts of plasma energy, Yellow Jacket creates his signature “stingers,” the potency of said stingers can vary from shocks to explosions. 

Variants include plasma beams and large spheres, but they currently require more concentration and stamina to use

He can also use his stingers to push him off surfaces as a kind of super-jump and can sustain limited flight mobility

Plasma Shields: Jacket can create small shields, enough to deflect low to medium powered attacks. Large shields require significant effort to shape and contain, once he’s made one, he’s stuck sustaining it.

Flight Belt: Jacket can fly thanks to the inertia belt made by his mentor Icon, based off Rocket’s Inertia belt. Since it was not made of the same material as the original belt, it allows only for flight and a decent powered body aura.

 Weaknesses and Limitations

Energy Stamina: Jacket stands the risk of overexerting himself if he pushes his plasma control too far. The reason why he tends to stick with short blasts is because they take much less energy to conjure. Attacks such as beams, energy spheres, and large defensive shields can potentially wear him down to unconsciousness if the strain is too much.  

High Metabolism: Similar to that of a speedster; Jacket’s plasma energy tears through his calorie reservoir. He needs a rather high end amount of food to sustain himself properly or else his energy suffers. 

 HISTORY

16-year-old Jamal Winston and Gloria Martinez figured trying to force their relationship made having to take care of their newborn far more painful than it had to be and called it quits. They continued co-parenting with both opting to drop-out of high school, Gloria a fulltime mother and Jamal picking up a fulltime job. Eventually the two managed to assuage any resentment towards each other and made steps toward genuine friendship, both turning out to be equally dedicated and loving parents. 

Taylor, named Clara at the time, enjoyed school. Not so much the actual studying as the playtime and socializing, but he was a bright student. In middle school he discovered a love for track and kept at it when he entered high school. Taylor was doing well, but struggled with his self-esteem in connection with fitting in with girls. He’d always been masculine and known a tomboy for nearly all of his childhood. His parents never had a problem with that, but he was picked at by other family members. It wasn’t until high school where Taylor discovered himself as trans, which both gave him answers he’d been looking for and terrified him as he had no idea how to go about this with his family. 

The topic of LGBTQ+ matters rarely passed through his household with his mother or with his father and step-mother. None of them openly expressed homo or transphobia, but Taylor had met enough extended family anti-LGBTQ+ and that stopped him from broaching the subject. Still he began looking into subtle ways to get a "head-start" on transitioning, including buying a binder and teaching himself natural voice changes. 

But Taylor was publicly outed during a family get-together, when a few of his younger cousins rifled through his belongings and brought with them the attention of Taylor’s uncle. When the situation turned into an all out yelling match and nearly physical, Taylor ran off. It would be the last anyone would see him for the months to come. 

While wandering around Dakota City, Taylor was abducted by the Reach and experimented on, the stress and torture he endured all the while activated his dormant metagene. He was eventually rescued by a team of young heroes while deep in the Western Pacific Reach mobile base, recognizing a past classmate, Virgil Hawkins. The two stuck close out of familiarity as they were eventually shifted over to S.T.A.R. Labs in Taos. 

They spent a month or so under the eye of Dr. David Wilcox, building resentment over being treated as lab rats alongside Tye Longshadow, Eduardo Dorado Jr., Asami Koizumi, and Nathaniel Tyron. It was during this time that Taylor’s commonly used nickname of ‘Munch’ came about because of his extreme appetite due to his metagene and at that point Taylor hadn’t chosen his name yet. The group, sans Nathaniel, then came to agree their stay at S.T.A.R was over and escaped. 

Their party was joined in by Jacklyn Ericson, unknown to them a hero known as Ferro and Team member, and were soon approached by Lex Luthor who offered them security in exchange for favors against the Reach. Little under two weeks later, the gang were fighting their way through the heart of the Warworld to rescue the captured heroes caught in stasis. Munch was on board with Nightwing’s invitation onto the Team, he’d always looked up to the Justice League and heroics called to him, but left with the others at seeing Arsenal’s dismissal despite him leading the rescue. 

Munch wouldn’t involve himself with heroes until their group until the League reached out to Jacklyn; they needed as many hands on deck. The Reach had activated field disruptors around the world which would eventually tear Earth to shreds if not shut down; Munch was paired off with Rocket to shut down the disruptor in Chile. Munch couldn’t hide his joy at being paired with Rocket, he’d been a fan of hers ever since she started off in Dakota City as Icon’s protégé. The two got on well and Rocket extended another invitation onto the Team stating their hometown could do with another hero, this time Munch accepted. 

He would take on the mantle Yellow Jacket and when Rocket’s former mentor Icon returned to Earth, was taken under his wing as a mentee. He and Virgil, who had also accepted the invitation onto the Team as Static, became the new generation of heroes in Dakota City. 

Just in time too, as from the shadows rise a threat spreading across the city’s metayouth, the Metabreed. 

  NOTES

Munch does eventually make it back to his parents, who have been been running themselves ragged organizing search parties for him. 

Because of his color scheme and insect motif, Jacket tends to be confused as Bumblebee’s protégé instead of Icon’s. Not that it’s cause for insult, but Karen and Munch note they wouldn’t make good partners. 

Munch comes to find out of another super in the family, although not of the heroic kind. His step-cousin is member of the H.I.V.E 5, See-More. 

He enjoys various shonen anime, occasionally reading the manga if he likes the anime enough, his favorite being the Dragon Ball franchise. He makes a nod towards this during the escape at S.T.A.R when Virgil asked him if he could blast open the door. When Munch’s first few blasts don’t cut it, he tries a larger beam in the only way he knows how, via Kamehameha.

Yellow Jacket has become very active on social media and has a notable following, much to Icon’s annoyance. 

Munch has recently taken up being a peer counselor at S.T.A.R Taos alongside Ed Jr.

Tears welled up in his ducts. Rapid blinking beat them back down. Phillip wiped at his lashes with the sleeve of his dress shirt like a finicky squirrel desperate to wick water from its coat. The dry white cotton scraped against his cornea. But the moisture crept back in, blurring his vision once more. With a shallow grasp, he scurried more swipes across one eye and then the other, desperate to keep staring at the Royal Arctic refrigerator in front of him.

It stared back.

It looked like the one in his aunt's kitchen. It did not feel like the one in his aunt's kitchen. The door was pocked and scratched, its dusty red epoxy nicked and flaked, exposing the gunmetal gray steel beneath. What had it done to earn such markings? Perhaps it had met the side of a wall? Road pavement? A body? Multiple bodies?

A shutter trickled down his vertebrae.

On its front, children's drawings hung from dot magnets. Phillip knew their details by heart. He had much time for study. One had a scribbled landscape with a pom-pom tree and a cheerful round sun suspended in the corner. It was nice. The other two, not so much. A lavender saw-toothed pterodactyl grinned at him. And in his least favorite, a cyan orb with wild pupils floated above a crowd of slant-mouthed onlookers with crashing boxes of colors flanking its sides. The lines were harsh and chaotic, crayon pressed too hard against the page, denting and warping the paper.

The refrigerator loomed beneath the bureau's pure white box lighting, a statue on display in this museum of the Oldest House. The hum of the fridge matched the pitch of the overheads, despite the plug resting in no socket. Now and then, the lights rattled and popped in fits and starts, shaken by whatever was happening outside of the padded foam-paneled chamber—that sound-barrier which kept him from communicating with the outside world. The intercom mocked him from its snug home outside the door. Its aluminum 'call' button sat happily in its place below the wire mesh speaker, far too many feet from his reach. His only hope for help distant and impossible.

He had been here for over a day. Or it had been longer? What if it were days? Not sure. Not sure of anything anymore. He'd lost track of time around the eighth hour after his shift ended. His soiled trousers told him it had too long. It was degrading. He was a grown man. But what was indignity compared to what would happen if he stopped? If he stopped!

Clinching the sides of his folding chair, his finger joints dug into the edges of the metal. Whose idea was it to have a folding chair? What genius thought that up? Surely, a recliner would have made more sense. At least something padded. The back of his thighs and buttocks have been numb for…well, who knows how long? Not him, that was for sure.

But the occasional rumbling from behind the marble and glass walls told him that relief was something which might never come.

Panic swelled back up through his throat, and he quelled a whimper. Be brave, he tried to tell himself. Be brave. This was what it meant to work in the bureau. He might not be a field agent, but they all either lasted long enough to retire or met their end in an abrupt blaze of paranatural glory. Wilcox got sucked into AI45-UE—a trashcan. Hassan was buried beneath the clocks. Maine straight-up poofed away after walking behind an innocuous commercial printer, leaving tottering patent leather pumps and a whirlwind of scrolling, twisting memos where she had stood seconds before. They still don't know why that happened. The area had been under investigation ever since.

But that woman, the one with calm, commanding voice—Jesse! She promised to get him. She was going to find Langston. And then Phillip could go home. To his wife. To his twin boys. Maybe he would quit the bureau. Whisk them off to a Florida beach like they always begged and then get a job peddling insurance in the suburbs. Langston never liked him anyway. And by 'liked,' he meant remembered. "Phillip, who?" Phillip, him. The one who had been serving the bureau for a half-decade. The one with his head down and his workstation tidy. The one who caught stray commas in reports because this was a place where mistakes, even the tiniest ones, could kill.

An eyelid twitched, almost collapsing shut. Phillip sucked in a breath through his front teeth and hyped himself with a surge of forced energy, conjured from the depths of his reserves. He was usually so stalwart and composed, but now he struggled. His legs jimmied against the concrete floor, bouncing on the balls of his polished loafers. He began to rock back and forth, sweaty hands scrubbing along the thighs of his creased slacks before bracing on his knees. Anything to keep himself present and put.

Then Jesse clicked through the intercom, tinny and thin, "I'm back. I'm coming in."

The lock indicator beside the door switched from red to green.

His pulse shot through his chest, not with panic but elation! A series of 'thank yous' ruptured out of him like the Hallelujah chorus. The spun-tight tendons in his back fell lax, and he leaned heavy against his palms, unwinding with relief. Tears fell in earnest, sliding paths down his cheeks and dribbling into his lap. Their salt made his skin itch. He made no move to wipe them this time. Why should he? He would be out soon.

It was over.

But as the wetness clouded and overcame his view of the fridge, his eyes fluttered.

The fridge door chunked open.

Pictures and magnets flung across the room.

Oh, God.

Did he blink?

The yawning mouth of the refrigerator poured out chilled air in smoky rolls of condensation. Instead of shelves lined with condiments or produce, the hull emptied into infinite space and time. It was dark with what looked like ingenious rock columns hanging suspended in the gaping awful nothing. Then a single giant orb spotlighted him with its piercing gaze. The refrigerator began to rattle and shake.

Backstory: Being raised by his father, Hongjoong had always wanted to see the world. He had traveled both by sea and sky with his father and learned under his wing, but after his father’s death Hongjoong inherited the ship and renamed it The HALA at the age of eighteen. “Hearts Awakened, Live Alive,” his father always taught him. With his friend Yunho, he was able to repair and upgrade many of the ship’s engines and technological aspects all making a comfortable environment for his future crew. One night, Hongjoong went to a bar to try to relax but ended up rescuing a girl whom he would fall in love with, Jo Da Hae. For three years, the three of them began recruiting their teams in order to search for the greatest treasure to ever be discovered.

She found work in a local bar and was making a decent living but never felt she was getting anywhere. The night she met Hongjoong was the night her life changed for the better. Two men had tried to flirt with her as her shift was ending, but she rejected both of them. The men fought, and Hongjoong pulled her out of there just in time. Quitting her job at the bar, she joined Hongjoong on his ship and became the zoologist and medic on their adventures.

His father never quite recovered from the tragedy but never failed to show love to his sons. After his father died, Seonghwa and his brother parted ways but kept in touch. Studying oceanography at the university, he met Geology major Grace-Anne Dawes, and the two hit it off immediately. Just after graduation, the university was attacked by a gang of evil pirates, but Seonghwa and Grace-Anne escaped safely. He’s also known for being the jokester and keeping everyone else laughing. Now, he serves as The HALA’s repairman and will sometimes add new features with the help of Phoebe, Wooyoung, and Taeran.

Backstory: Yeosang’s father was a doctor, and he decided to follow in his footsteps; but he didn’t feel that he was studying medicine for himself. He felt as if it was just to please his family. Dropping university wasn’t easy, but as long as Phoebe was with him, he was confident in any path they chose. Although, he hadn’t quite completed his schooling, he was able to gather whatever medical books he could find and study from them. Now, on The HALA, he’s the medic and the Quartermaster. He may be the more quiet and reserved type, but that doesn’t hide his kind heart.

There she met and fell in love with med student Kang Yeosang. The two eventually decided to drop university to start a life of their own, but were recruited by Hongjoong after he was injured on an expedition.

Backstory: San had been an orphan since he was small, but he grew up under Mr. Wilcox’s wing and eventually being taken in as his intern. He studied astronomy and navigation while working for the Wilcox’s company. San lived with the Wilcox family, and fell in love with the youngest daughter Celestia. He often would hear her sing whenever she studied, was getting ready for the day, getting ready for bed, anything. Her voice melted his heart; and knowing that she’d be the woman for him, he saved part of what he made for a ring to propose to her with. For years, they had been friends, but it wasn’t until they were both eighteen when San confessed his love to her and she had felt the same. The two eloped shortly after San’s twentieth birthday. However, after a break-in in the Wilcox home, he and Celestia had to escape without looking back. After mourning the loss of Celestia’s parents and two older siblings, the two were soon recruited by San’s friend Hongjoong. While on the ship, San is able to use his knowledge in Astronomy to navigate the ship and care for his pregnant wife.

However, one fateful night, robbers broke into her home, causing her mother to give her a large amount of money to take with her and San to escape. Mrs. Wilcox was the only one who knew of her daughter’s marriage to San. Once on the captain’s ship, the two feel safe again. Due to her pregnancy, she spends most days quietly studying the artifacts the crew finds on their journey.

He spent countless hours studying both aeronautics and pirate ships until he was able to teach himself how flying ships worked. Mingi was also known for being a sweetheart despite his strong features, and when he met Kim Taeran, she had rocked his world. About a year after meeting, their college was set ablaze, so the two ran off and eventually joined Hongjoong and the rest of ATEEZ and their significant others’ on The HALA.

Backstory: Taeran had been building walls around herself ever since her best friend betrayed her when they were fourteen, which resulted in her parents’ murders. From then on she had the hardest time trusting people. Although it seemed weird to others, solving math problems helped her to cope. When she got to college, she met Mingi but didn’t trust him right away as she did with others. As time went on, she opened up to Mingi more and eventually found another one of very few people to trust. After running away with him after their school burned down, she and Mingi joined Hongjoong and she is able to put her math skills to use when she and Phoebe decipher codings on artifacts and helping Yunho with adding new technologies on the ship.

Backstory: Wooyoung grew up in a wealthy family, but his parents were barely around due to their jobs. His nanny was the one who really raised him, and taught him to be kind and loving to others, and this allowed him to have many friends growing up. One of those friends was Dinah Grady, and eventually they became lovers. He studied physics all throughout his schooling, and eventually earned himself a degree in that field. However, he’ll have times where he doubts if people genuinely love him due to the lack of love from his folks. In order to get a fresh start, he and Dinah ran off to begin a new life for themselves and eventually stumbled onto The HALA.

Occupation: Barrelman (Crow’s nest), Meteorologist

Backstory: Being a labeled a “wild one” due to having a few tattoos and a couple of piercings, Dinah has actually always been a sweetheart. She grew up climbing trees and taking gymnastics, but eventually took up meteorology for a career path. Dinah had always been known for being beautiful, but she wanted to show others that there was much more to her than a pretty face. When her heart was stolen by Jung Wooyoung, she knew she wanted to be with him for the rest of her days, but she’s always there for him when he needs someone to hold. The two of them eventually joined The HALA, and were the last ones to join, completing the crew. Dinah was appointed the barrelman due to her knowledgable in detecting the weather, noticing things really well, and being able to use her agility to climb up the crow’s nest.

Full Name: Choi Jong Ho

Birthday: October 12

Occupation: Gunman, Pyrotechnic

Backstory: Jongho had a rough childhood. When he was seven, both of his parents were killed in a car accident, which sent him to live with his aunt and uncle and cousins. He was often neglected, and eventually led him to be a troublemaker, often getting his hands on matches and fireworks. When he was in middle school, he was sent to counseling and his mentor waisted no time in helping Jongho get back on his feet. His mentor was also a gunman, so he taught Jongho how put his pyrotechnic skills to good use. Once Jongho was able to go off on his own, he ran from home, and sneaked onto The HALA, but not without Dahae noticing and taking him to Hongjoong. Since then, Jongho has been in charge of the weaponry on The HALA. He might have a short temper sometimes, but he’s learned to control it greatly.

Holiday-season traditions stretching back for centuries have linked wintertime romance to decorative sprigs of mistletoe. The way that the plant's rounded evergreen leaves and white berries tightly hug the branches of the trees on which it grows probably inspired that association. The truth about this botanical intimacy is less romantic: Mistletoe is a kind of parasite. Its leaves produce sugars by photosynthesis, but instead of roots, it has structures that pierce the host tree's vital tissues to suck out nutrients and water.

But that interdependence goes even deeper, and scientists are just starting to realize the ways in which mistletoes are unique at the molecular level because of it. The cells of all multicellular organisms rely on the organelles called mitochondria to make their biochemical fuel — all multicellular organisms except mistletoes, that is. Not only do their mitochondria produce little if any of this fuel, they've lost many of the genes needed to make it. In the few years since botanists discovered this anomaly, scientists worldwide have tried with no more than limited success to figure out how mistletoes pull off this trick.

Reunited Bikini Kill Are as Vital as Ever at Brooklyn Steel on Friday Night

Bikini Kill – Brooklyn Steel – May 31, 2019

I was in middle school when I first heard Bikini Kill. The band had broken up years earlier, and lead singer Kathleen Hanna was already well into her Le Tigre years. I was late to the game, but frankly, it couldn’t be helped. It’s true I missed the riot grrrl movement, “girls to the front” and the ensuing misogynistic backlash. But I didn’t miss the sexism or the feelings of powerlessness or the piercing anger from which Bikini Kill sprung. That was all there when I was young, and it hardly needs to be said that it’s still here now.

Perhaps that’s why Friday night at Brooklyn Steel was so thrillingly good. Bikini Kill played their first New York City show in 22 years, yet it felt deeply current. On the one hand, that’s sad: The same problems persist. But on the other hand, it’s energizing—and cathartic. The fight lives on. When Hanna screamed, “Does it scare you, boy, that we don’t need you,” on “Don’t Need You,” my body tingled. When she sang, “Your world not mine, your world not ours,” during “Resist Psychic Death,” I vigorously nodded along. On “Magnet,” we all screamed three big fucks. It felt good. But it was tons of fun, too. Hanna, dressed in a pink baby-doll dress and bright blue leggings, na-na-na-ed, wailed and teased on “Alien She,” toy-soldiering her arms, jumping up and down. It was contagious joy, and the audience felt every bit—groups of women dancing, yelling their heads off. Hanna took turns with drummer Tobi Vail, the band’s drummer, who shredded on the microphone, most memorably on “Hamster Baby.” Bassist Kathi Wilcox boomeranged from bass to drums to guitar and back again, and Erica Dawn Lyle, a new guitarist, flawlessly played the hits.

The encore was the big, shiny cherry on top. “Double Dare Ya” was a serotonin flood: There’s nothing quite like hearing in person, “We’re Bikini Kill and we want revolution girl style now!” At song’s end, Hanna took her updo down, her mane falling around her face like a punk halo, and launched into “Suck My Left One.” It’s a vulgar, spit-in-your-face banger, and I loved every minute. Bikini Kill are timeless and ever-current, and Friday’s show was so incredibly special. They are the energy, ethos and sound we needed then—and still need today. —Rachel Brody | @RachelCBrody
