Piedmont Park murder: Katherine Janness
Officers went to the entrance of Piedmont Park at 10th Street and Charles Allen Drive around 1 a.m. on July 28, 2021, after the discovery of a woman and dog stabbed to death.
The woman was identified as 40-year-old Atlanta resident Katherine Janness. She was reportedly found near the entrance to the park at 10th Street and Charles Allen Drive.
A friend said Janness was an "incredible dog mom and advocate for social justice." She was a musician and was well-liked in the Midtown Atlanta community.
Emma Clark (girlfriend of Janness) allegedly tracked them with her iPhone and found both Janness and her 3-year-old dog dead near the entrance to the park at 10th Street and Charles Allen Drive.
A relative said Janness was taking her dog Bowie for a quick walk but never came back. The couple lived up the street from the park and had been together for years.
Katherine Janness suffered more than 50 stab wounds to her face, neck and torso the night in July she was murdered in Piedmont Park, according to an autopsy report. The autopsy showed Katie Janness died due to "sharp force injuries of her face, neck, and torso" that caused injuries to major blood vessels and internal organs. At least 15 of those wounds were to her head.
The report revealed the letters "F", "A", and "T" were carved into her torso. The report described significant mutilation to her upper torso.
A retired investigator said some valuable evidence could have been gathered from Bowie's corpse. APD ordered an examination looking for potential DNA that may have ended up on, or in the mouth of Bowie. So far, police have not released information on the necropsy.
Following the murder of Katie Janess and her dog Bowie last July, the city of Atlanta had promised to upgrade security at parks and add new active cameras. City officials said there were cameras in Piedmont Park that night, but those cameras were inactive. There are nine security cameras inside Piedmont Park, but none are operational due to outdated technology. The cameras were not removed because their presence was deemed valuable. Investigators tried to determine if there is any information to extract from the cameras, but no images or video have been made public.
The murder still remains unsolved and police have released few details. The murder received national attention and sparked panic in residents of Midtown and much of metro Atlanta.
In January, then APD Deputy Police Chief Charles Hampton Jr. said investigators were receiving regular tips, following up on leads and meeting regularly with the FBI.
"We are getting close in, my opinion," Hampton Jr. said.

Atlanta Wedding Photographers Shoot Engagement Session in Piedmont Park
This week’s blog is about Jonathon and Cameron’s photo session at Piedmont Park.  It was a wonderful time for us to get to know each other and to learn more about their wedding in December.
If you know me, you know that I love starting early in the morning.  Jonathon and Cameron were early risers too. They were excited to see what Piedmont Park looks like in the morning and to also take advantage of the cool fall weather in the late September, Atlanta mornings. They arrived at 7:20 just before sunrise which was the perfect lighting for the champagne shot .going to do.  We quickly walked over to the Greystone Event Center,  Greystone is in the western part of the park next to Lake Clara Meer and the pool.  It is adorned with an arched entrance supported by large marble columns.  In the morning, this area is dark. We made our way there with our bottles of champagne.  I placed Jonathon and Cameron  in the middle of the columns with the flash behind them to back light them.  I gave the champagne to Jonathon and told Cameron to get behind him so she would not get wet when the burst of bubbly came out of the bottle.   Jonathon opened the bottle and put his thumb over the opening so the pressure would build and shook the bubbly just like the race car drivers after they win a race.  As he sprayed the champagne the flash was backlit them and made the sudsy spray sparkle.
Next, Cameron wanted some photos with the Atlanta skyline in the background.  We strolled a few feet to the west towards the steps to the park’s active oval.  Located there are the original steps, flower vase and wall from the 1880’s Agricultural Exhibition that the park was built for.  This little part of Piedmont Park is perfect for these playful sky linel photos.  The couple climbed the wall and pranced across it like trapeze artists.  As they took these photos, I could tell how adventurous they were.
We then moseyed on over to the pier where the sun was rising. They went to the end of the pier and practiced their first dance in the warmth of the morning sun.  They were spunky and fun.  We took a small break there and Cameron started telling me about the details of their wedding.
The wedding is going to take place in Atlanta.  The ceremony will be held at the Atlanta Peachtree Christian Church and the reception will be held at the historic Rhodes Hall.  Both venues are historic Atlanta landmarks.  Peachtree Christian was dedicated in 1928 and was designed to be a cathedral in Atlanta,  it was designed by Frank A. Pittman.  The facade is based on the Melrose Abbey in Scotland and the stained-glass windows are said to be the largest collection of English stained glass outside of England.  Rhodes Hall was built in 1904 for the founder of Rhodes Furniture Company, Amos Rhodes.  It is one of the most unique wedding venues in Atlanta and is home to the Georgia Trust.  One of the most important historic details is that several of Cameron’s family members have had their weddings there in the past.
It was such a treat photographing this delightful couple. We are looking forward to Jonathon and Cameron’s big day.  I know it will be one for the history books!
Thanks for checking out this Atlanta wedding photographers blog! I hope you enjoyed the read and found it interesting! The Laurel Inner Space
The Laurel Independent Newspaper, October 2024 Issue
Written in stone: Geology in our region
By AGNES PASCO CONATY
Many structures in the District — the monuments and museums, the federal buildings — reveal much of the underlying geological history of this region. Take the Washington Monument, for instance. The marble exterior faces have a number of characteristics, including shades of color, that indicate the stone was sourced from different quarries, including two right here in Maryland. The core of the structure is bluestone gneiss and granite, also quarried in Maryland, while the interior walls are faced with Maine granite. When finished in 1884, this 554-foot-7-inch monument was the tallest structure in the world. It’s the world’s tallest obelisk and predominantly-stone structure to this day.
And right here in Laurel, we can take a geologic walking tour of historical landmarks, too, that might be seen as monuments, of a sort, to our region’s geology: The Montpelier Mansion and St. Mary of the Mills Catholic Church are two good examples of how geology influenced both architecture and construction in earlier eras. Like most of the city’s historic buildings still standing, the mansion and church were constructed of bricks and clay, which were standard materials in the 18th and 19th centuries.
I’m fascinated by these historic examples of local geology, and my fascination prompted me to learn more about the ground my home in West Laurel stands on. What lies beneath its foundation — and even beneath my own feet? To answer these questions, I turned to easy-to-access, reliable sources including the U.S. Geological Survey (pubs.usgs.gov) and the Maryland Geological Survey (mgs.md.gov).
The state’s site has a map showing six distinct but connected landforms, five of which, stretching from the state’s western border east to the Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic, we can explore on foot. (The sixth is the Atlantic Continental Shelf, which is offshore.) Laurel, along with the greater D.C. region, is located along the north-south border between the Piedmont and the Atlantic Coastal Plain, the landform that gives way to the continental shelf.
Rocks found in Maryland’s Piedmont, to our west, are primarily igneous and metamorphic; igneous rocks form from volcanic activity and, with sufficient pressure over time, transform into metamorphic rocks.
The Atlantic Coastal Plain, spreading out to out to the east, has primarily sedimentary rocks (i.e., sandstone, limestone and shale). Sedimentary rocks form when small rock fragments, typically resulting from weathering or erosion, are compressed over thousands of years. Many sedimentary rocks in our area, for instance, have formed from deposits of the Patuxent and Patapsco rivers.
Dinosaur Park, a 22-acre tract under the auspices of the Prince George’s County Department of Parks and Recreation, offers us an unusual geological glimpse into our region’s history. In 1858, African American workers mining iron ore at the site discovered dinosaur fossils, the first ever found in Maryland.
Since those first finds, scientists have discovered hundreds of dinosaur teeth and bones at the site; most are from sauropods (long-necked herbivores), and theropods, which, like the Tyrannosaurus rex, were large predatory carnivores. The majority of these fossils date to the Cretaceous period, which followed the Jurassic period, taking place 145 million to 66 million years ago.
The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission purchased the tract and established Dinosaur Park in 1995.
And dinosaurs roamed far beyond the bounds of that 22-acre tract, of course. (Indeed, they inhabited most of the Mid-Atlantic region during a period that lasted roughly 158 million years.) I work at NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center, and we have an exhibit (pictured below) of dinosaur artifacts, most of which were found right here in Greenbelt by Ray Stanford, an amateur paleontologist with an extraordinary knack for finding dinosaur tracks.
During excavation of a Goddard parking lot in 2012, Stanford unearthed the footprint of a nodosaur, a heavily armored plant-eating dinosaur from the late Jurassic period, some 145 million years ago. (You can read Stanford’s account of his finds in this article in Nature magazine: tinyurl.com/yuw8p56t). Subsequent excavations at Goddard have uncovered sauropod tracks like those found at Dinosaur Park, as well, and scientists excavating the parking lot also found pterosaur tracks. Not the ancestor of a bird or bat, and not a dinosaur (though on a branch of the same family tree), the pterosaur was the earliest-known vertebrate capable of flight.
My office at Goddard is a few yards from this intriguing exhibit of digs, and sometimes I spend my lunch break looking at a cast of a fossilized dinosaur poo!
If you’re eager to learn about rockhounding, there are clubs you can join to connect with others who share your interests. I can recommend three clubs right here in Maryland: the Maryland Geological Society (mdgeosociety.org/), the Baltimore Mineral Society (tinyurl.com/2hpe3z3h) and the Southern Maryland Rock and Mineral Club (smrmc.org/).
A quick search online will turn up numerous guides to common rocks and minerals, including specimens you may easily find in our area. Rockchasing.com has a particularly good section about Maryland’s rocks and minerals that includes a list of sites where you can find each type. Rockchasing’s Maryland resources are at tinyurl.com/yfrw7d2b.
And one of the very best ways to experience rockhounding is to start in your own backyard (like I did) — you may be surprised what you can find right under your feet! If you live near a creek (like I do), you may find rocks and minerals, maybe even shells, that have been polished as they’ve been tumbled, over time, by moving water.
I encourage you to get a nice journal so you can describe your digs and draw them in detail. And if you catch the rockhounding bug, consider investing in a hand lens and a rock pickaxe, too. It’s never too late to follow your curiosity and dig right in!

Atlanta Wedding Photographers the Capture Adventurous Spirit of Bride and Groom
This week’s photo session is an Atlanta wedding photography classic.  The couple’s wedding is in October and they wanted their engagement photos to have that Atlanta flavor by shooting at city landmarks that give that urban feel.  Liz and Ben are international travelers and appreciate the energy a city can bring.
We started early at Piedmont Park at sunrise.  They brought their dog Archie, who was an energetic fun soul.  He brought so much personality and playfulness to the shoot.
The weather and lighting were perfect.  When we got there the street lights of the park were still on.  We could take advantage of the dramatic lighting a lamp can bring to a couple.  It gave a very intimate and moody light. While it was still dawn and we had that low early light we moved over to the Greystone, where they have this grand arched entrance with large stone columns.  There it was dark enough to use a flash to backlight the couple.
From there we moved on to capture the Atlanta Skyline.  In front of Greystone is the Active Oval Running Loop with a soccer field in the middle.  The entrance to the field is the original historic wall with the stone planters from when that area used to be the agricultural pavilion when the park was first built.  The wall lines up perfectly along Piedmont Road and Peachtree street.  That way you see the major buildings in midtown.  There our couple climbed the wall and played.  We even got Archie to get into the act.  Archie would pose for the camera and supervise the couple in love.
To take advantage of the park we continued  on to Lake Clara Meer, the center of the park.  There we went to the front of the Dockside Visitor Center where they have a beautiful row of corinthian columns.  It is a nice little area with great light.  We then wrapped around the building to the dock leading to Lake Clara Meer where the sun was coming up above the treeline.
Liz also wanted to use some of the murals in Atlanta made by local artists.  There are several of them by Krog street which is known for their graffiti filled tunnel. Liz and Ben went to Liz’s favorite mural of butterflies.  There we took a few photos detailing Liz’s ring made from family heirloom stones. It is a beautiful ring with family history and deep meaning to the couple.  We went into the tunnel and admired the latest artwork painted on the walls.  We could still smell the fresh paint in the air.
Liz noticed a large mural on the way to the Krog Street Tunnel.  As we got closer to the mural we noticed that in the center was a heart.  It was the perfect location to end the day.  What a great adventure in the city where we captured the adventurous spirit of Liz, Ben and Archie.

Roofers in Montgomery County PA Can Improve the Look and Value of Your Home
Roofers in Montgomery county PA, are a valuable resource for anyone who is interested in improving the look and value of their home. They are trained to recognize issues and make repairs as needed, and they can also help to prevent future problems from occurring. If you are considering hiring one of these professionals, it is important to do your research before selecting a company. There are several factors to consider, including experience and price.
Montgomery County, Pennsylvania is a county in southeastern Pennsylvania, northwest of Philadelphia. It is a gently hilly piedmont region bounded by the Schuylkill River and other waterways, including Green Lane Reservoir. Its population was 826,518 in the 2020 census.
Its affluent residents enjoy a diverse economy and high quality of life. In addition to its thriving business sector, it is home to many of the nation’s best public and private schools. It is also known for its extensive system of parks and green spaces, and it features dozens of supermarkets and hundreds of cafes and restaurants.
In the nineteenth century, Montgomery County was an active region of family farms and small industries. Turnpikes, canals, and railroads crisscrossed the area, connecting it to Philadelphia and other parts of the state. Early European settlers worked modest-size farms and owned some African-descended slaves, though many Quaker, Mennonite, and Schwenkfelder landowners opposed slavery.
Upgrading the roof of your house is a big investment. It is also an important element of your home’s protection and energy efficiency. In fact, a new roof will often save homeowners money in the long run, as it can significantly reduce energy costs. It is also an excellent way to increase the resale value of your home.
If you are in the market for a new roof, it’s best to find a local roofing contractor that has years of experience. This will ensure that the job is done right the first time and you don’t end up with costly repairs later on. Also, a local roofing contractor will know the weather conditions in your area better than someone from out of town.
There are various types of quality roofing available in the market, including asphalt shingles, copper, slate, and wood. Each type of roofing has its own set of advantages and disadvantages. However, it is essential to have a reliable roof over your head to protect you and your loved ones from harmful elements like rain.
While most homeowners will need a roofer for some repairs at some point, it is important to do routine maintenance to ensure that your roof stays in good condition. You can also hire a local roofer to do a thorough inspection of your roof before deciding on any repairs or replacements. These experts can provide you with a range of services, including roof repair, gutter installation and siding repairs. Moreover, they can help you with the entire process of choosing the right roofing materials for your property. You can also get an estimate for your project, which will save you time and money.
At Spring Valley Roofing, we take roof inspections seriously. Before our team begins any roof service or repair job, our exclusive West Chester roofing contractor makes sure to perform a thorough inspection. Inspecting a roof before beginning any service is an important step of the process, as it can provide vital information about the condition of a roof, including its age, materials used, and any existing damage or problems.
