The Lost Camera Shaina Tranquilino November 22, 2024
Andrea had spent the morning trekking through the narrow, cobbled streets of the old town, chasing sunlight as it streamed between buildings and cast golden nets over weathered stone. A professional photographer, her eye was always drawn to the ordinary scenes that others missed: a cat curled lazily on a windowsill, the burst of ivy sneaking over a crumbling brick wall, or the laughter of children echoing in a sun-dappled alleyway.
As she rested on a bench in a small, hidden plaza, Andrea noticed something unusual. Half-hidden under a cluster of fallen leaves was an old, leather-bound camera. Its body was scuffed, and its once-black casing had faded into shades of charcoal. Curious, she picked it up, brushing off the debris. It felt solid and well-loved, like an heirloom passed through generations.
The camera was a vintage model, the kind with film that needed to be developed. As she turned it over, she realized there was still a roll inside. It was an unexpected find in an age dominated by digital perfection. The decision was simple: she needed to see what secrets this camera held.
A week later, Andrea stood in the small, dimly lit room of an old photography studio, fingers drumming against the glass counter as the technician handed her an envelope. "Interesting shots on this one," he had said with a mysterious smile.
Andrea's heart thudded as she pulled out the stack of freshly developed photographs. The first image was a hazy morning in a park: an elderly man with a wide-brimmed hat sat feeding the pigeons, a wistful smile on his face. Next, a young couple with clasped hands strolled along a riverbank, their laughter almost audible in the way their faces tilted toward each other.
The third photo showed a little girl with a halo of curls, mid-leap as she chased bubbles, joy captured in a blur of tiny feet and sunlit eyes. Image after image revealed lives unknown but connected by their simple, unguarded beauty—snapshots of fleeting moments, overlooked by all but this unseen photographer.
Andrea felt as though she had stepped into the lives of strangers and yet, curiously, it felt like they were sharing secrets just with her. She wondered who had held this camera before her, who had seen the world this way—with eyes that cherished the fleeting, unscripted moments. Had they been a traveler, a local, an artist? Or simply someone who understood that life’s greatest moments are often the smallest?
She laid out the last photo: a view of the old town from a hilltop at dusk, the skyline etched in a palette of rose and navy. Tucked in the corner, barely visible, was a handwritten note on the back. It read, "To those who see the world with wonder, may your heart always capture the moments your eyes forget."
Andrea smiled, a warmth unfurling in her chest. She decided then that she would keep the old camera. It would be her companion for when she needed to slow down and remember why she fell in love with photography—to remind her that the world is full of stories, even in the lives of strangers.
The next morning, Andrea loaded the camera with a fresh roll of film and stepped out into the street, eyes sharpened, heart open. She wasn’t just looking anymore; she was seeing.

NEW EPISODE: Episode 09: Jack Ruby did more than kill Lee Harvey Oswald that day. He helped send two photographers down two very different paths. One led to fame, glory, and money while the other led to self-doubt and depression. This isn’t just the story of how Jack Ruby changed the lives of those you can see in the frame of this iconic image, it’s the story between two photographers and how six-tenths of a second was all it took to divide those two between infamy and obscurity.
This is the ninth episode in a series of episodes that’ll drop every Saturday throughout 2024.

𝗣𝗨𝗧𝗧𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗠𝗬 𝗖𝗟𝗢𝗨𝗗𝗦 𝗜𝗡 𝗧𝗛𝗘𝗥𝗘 𝗣𝗟𝗔𝗖𝗘.. She Started taking her clouds and diagnosing them and putting them into their right place. Fixing and reorganizing to create harmony. Inner harmony. She dismembered the clouds and analyzed them. When is it too much? So many tears evaporated and made clouds rumble and tumble with winds blowing and turning. Reading, contemplating, reorganizing, understanding and placing priorities. Trying to keep myself in the present and not the future or the past. Forgiving herself. Knowing and understanding that she did things out of a place of love. The judgement of others are not her problem. If they liked her or not wasn’t Hers to decipher. She lived under her rules, she lived with her heart in her hands, and loved blindly. Happy Monday guys! Healing is a thrill!!!! Take the time to heal yourself and the relationship with YOU! "Stop! Turn around! There’s my Kaiser!"
That’s what I shouted when I spotted this 1948 Frazer off a snowy Montana highway. This car, a near twin to the 1947 Kaiser my father drove, brought my past to life in an unexpected moment. Read the full story of how I captured this image in a Good Friday snowstorm: https://bryandspellman.com/a-snowy-surprise-discovering-a-1948-frazer-in-montanamy-1948

On my quest to learn more about the importance of image making, I decided to visit the rural parts of my country researching about what happens in rural homes when the bread winners have left, in search of better opportunities in the city. I also tried to re-represent that feeling through imagery. It was June 2013, I had just dropped out of my BSc computer science degree from Wits university after studying two years for it. I think that this was also the moment where my mother approved my change of career fields as she was also involved in process and the value of this photo in someway or another. Whilst spending a month photographing, I came across an old man, Mr Ngema (pictured here) whom I briefly spoke with about this research I was undertaking before taking a photo. I also promised to give him his printed version of the images when I return. Later that year my mother was visiting KZN, so I asked her to take the photo along and give it to Mr Ngema as I have promised him. I had printed the photo on an archival photo paper, signed and framed it, also wrote his name and the date the photo was taken. I knew that this was going to be a treasure ready to hanged on the wall as a memory for years to come. So my mother did as I had asked, but it was a bittersweet moment when she got to Mr Ngema’s house when they told her that Mr Ngema had passed away and his funeral was a week ago. But they busted into joy when they saw my mother carrying a big photo of him, they were happy because he had never had a photo taken of him, the photo that my mom was carrying was the first and the only one and they appreciated and thanked my mom for the great pleasure to the point where they even offered to pay for the image, the moment brought tears to everyone. I remember my mother calling me at that same instant and all I could hear was a lot of voices thanking me for the photo. I asked them to keep the photo for free and use that money for something else. #photographystories #portrait #thembambuyisa (at Johannesburg, Gauteng)
