Chicago, Illinois: A training about fighting deportations, as part of the week-long “Regroup and Strategize” series.

Sacramento, California: “Call to Action” conference and gathering, featuring a “day of skillshares and trainings” along with workshops, panels, and a keynote presentation from anarchist author Dean Spade. You can find more information and a full schedule here.

Atlanta, Georgia: A mass mobilization and day of resistance on the two-year anniversary of the murder of Tortuguita.

Brooklyn, New York: A community gathering including workshops.

Steve-Centric Stucky Fics: 5 Recs + 1 TBR

As promised, here is the rec list for Steve/Bucky fics with a focus on Steve-centric stories—all of them not EG-compliant, as requested. It's not quite as long as my usual rec lists for two reasons:

(1) I'm still sick and I can barely sit up straight, so please forgive the brevity of the list, and

(2) I deliberately wanted to include exclusively fics that were written in 2022 and 2023 to shine a spotlight on a few of the many wonderful writers and artists who are still creating absolutely fantastic works for the Stucky ship and who deserve to be read just as widely and passionately as older works in the fandom. Recency bias, but make it positive!

So without further ado, here are five Steve-centric Stucky recs and one more fic that I can't wait to get to:

1. say it soft and it's almost like praying by Somanywords | 41K, M

Author's summary: Natasha says, “Look, whatever the truth is about you, we have no way of really knowing the Winter Soldier's intentions. He’s not all there, he’s not who you remember. He’s a hot mess, Steve.”

“Why does everyone think that?” Steve says, and he’s nearly yelling, but not quite, because he doesn’t need to, not when they’re so close. “Why does everyone keep saying he’s a mess—have you seen me?" 

Post-CA:TWS canon divergent. I literally finished this fic about 15 minutes ago, so I haven't even left a comment yet. I'm still processing, you could say. The author tagged this with "just another post catws fic (but by me)"—and yes, that's what you get. All the usual ingredients are here, but the joy of TWS canon divergence is of course in the endless possibilities of how these well-known ingredients are used, re-arranged, and re-imagined as something new, exciting, and often much more satisfying than in canon. This fic excels at all three and is an absolute joy from start to finish.

2. Daybreak by BonkyBornes, art by PottersPink | 9K, NR

Author's summary: They called it project Rebirth because the person was supposed to be reborn, like a phoenix from the ashes. Steve was supposed to be the phoenix. He was supposed to rise from the ashes of his old body, he was supposed to leave behind his deafness and his limp and the scoliosis that bent his entire body to the left. He was supposed to leave behind everything that held him back.

In the end, the only thing that left was the only thing that mattered.

Shrinkyclinks canon-divergent AU. What if Project Rebirth didn't go right...but it didn't go entirely wrong either? A story about ghosts but not a ghost story. Or maybe something else entirely? Steve fights his body and time and the memories that keep haunting him. Beautifully written, with gorgeous art by PottersPink that perfectly complements the story.

3. Exhale by seapigeon, art by dudewhereismypie | 15K, M

Author's summary: After the Chitauri invasion, Steve parts ways with SHIELD, unsure if he can trust an agency that tried to deceive him and built weapons from the Tesseract.

He finds himself alone in an unfamiliar future, penniless, not even legally alive. Fortunately, he knows how to survive. Steve Rogers is used to getting by on his own.

The thing is, he doesn't have to.

Shrunkyclunks. Post-Avengers canon divergent. A fic that asks the question: What if, after the battle of New York, Steve had told SHIELD a polite but firm 'No'? Follow him as he strikes out on his own, finds an apartment, a job, and friends, figures out life in the 21st century...and of course falls in love!

4. Preberseeschießen by Ginny_Potter | 6K, T

Author's summary: Bucky breathes out and shoots. The bullet hits water… and there it is, the zapping sound of paper tearing.

The light turns on and off three times. Third circle. Just a lick out of bullseye. The Howlies explode in cheers.

Or, the Howling Commandos play a shooting game with the Austrian Resistance and Steve has lots of unresolved feelings about himself, his new body, and his changing relationship with Bucky. In other words, comrades are comrades, angst looms, and Steve feels.

Wartime fic. Would you like to read some excellent gay angst full of yearning and unresolved tension, peppered with interesting and wonderfully specific historical details and Howlies camaraderie? Would you like to get your heart crushed a little? Yes? Here you go. And if this makes you feel too sad by the end of it and you crave a bit of a happier resolution, just jump straight into a fistfull of dollars (5K, E) by the same author, which is not intended as a companion piece or even set in the same universe, but it works just as if it were. (Look at me sneaking in extra recs.)

5. Not In The Answer But The Question by aimmyarrowshigh, art by PottersPink | 27K, T

Author's summary: It rankles that his drink was made before he even got a chance to order it. What if he wanted a change? What if he were adventurous and bold? What if he tried something new?

Or, Steve Rogers shakes up his gray daily routine in 2014 by going back home to Vinegar Hill. To his surprise, the Jewish deli he used to frequent with Arnie is still standing.

And Steve's whole life changes again.

Shrunkyclunks. Post-Avengers canon divergent. A lost and lonely Steve tries to figure out who he was, is and most importantly, wants to be in this new century he's found himself in that is both terrifying and full of possibilities. Told in vignettes (I did not count, but I believe all of them are exactly 100 word drabbles) that perfectly illustrate the fragmented mind and life of its protagonist and his experience of constantly shifting and adjusting between past and present. A story about identity, memory, self-acceptance, and finding the courage to love and let yourself be loved. And food. So much amazing food!

Author's summary: “It starts with bananas. Of course, it's not really about the bananas. Just like a camel isn't bothered by one single straw, just like a dam doesn't break because of one extra drop. Obviously, Steve's mental breakdown isn't about bananas.”

Steve is overwhelmed and hanging by a thread, doing his best to take care of Bucky while still deeply traumatized himself. He finally has a breakdown over the stupidest of things: bananas. So Bucky takes care of him.

In which Steve learns to surf, Bucky becomes a gardener, and they both begin to heal.

Post-CA:TWS canon divergent. No, I did not make a mistake, the word count for this story really does come in at an impressive (or intimidating, you decide) 358,225 words! Which is the only reason why I haven't read it yet. I do want to make time for this asap because the snippets I've read so far were very intriguing and everything I've heard about it from people who have finished it, sounds absolutely amazing. So, this is the wild card pick!

Berserker Syndrome - A Beyblade AU

Though I've been toying with this idea off and on since 2014, this story is still very much in the early planning stages. As such please anticipate changes to what you read below throughout the coming weeks. Writing will begin as soon as I've finished watching through the original series again.

While technically an AU - This story will follow the lore of the anime. However, I have made some changes to the anime canon which can be found here.

Early Summary:

The Borg corporation was only a tiny piece of a much bigger pie. It’s collapse, though inconvenient, had ultimately only set the bigger operation back a few years, and perhaps it was to Kiril’s advantage that it had. The US government had raided the abbey, “freed” the 1200 child soldiers within, and shut down the program. With the fall of Borg the United States was certain the threat had been eradicated and a war was no longer brewing. But they knew nothing of the bigger picture, and were still completely unaware that 300 of those “free” children had been mutated into bio-weapons with the strength of sacred beasts running through their veins.

There had been concern for a time that some of the children might dare to speak out, but despite Vladimir and Voltaire’s ignorance the youth had been programmed well. However, it wasn’t just blind loyalty that kept them quiet. It was fear. Pure, unadulterated, fear. Those that felt any inkling to rebel (such as the members of Neo Borg) knew that to testify in a court of law, or to speak out in any manner would mean a fate far worse than death. They could never escape, and they knew that.

When the time was right the children would be called to arms and would serve the operation resolutely. Those that refused to heed the call would simply be eliminated.

What Kiril was unaware of, however, was that one of those children, one with a familial blood, had a rebel spirit much too strong to ever be quelled. With the power of the legendary twin phoenixes, one of life and the other of death, and his memories of the abbey nearly fully restored, 17-year-old Kai Hiwatari would soon be recognized as one of the most powerful, and most dangerous bio-weapons to have ever been created.

And so…. Kiril’s plans may yet be thwarted…

Canary's thrill, the first to kill - chapter 17 (fragment)

A more experimental chapter, I was a bit scared of the reception but so far people seem to like it ^^

Jimmy turned on his back, looking straight up at Tango and at the sky. The cracks on the firmament were becoming more and more apparent. As if it was gonna fall on them any moment... But he could barely keep his focus on it. All he could see were Tango's big, bright eyes, watching him with cautious optimism and quiet happiness. Jimmy reached out, his trembling, rigid hand clumsily touching the other man's cheek.

"I'm sorry..." he whispered.

"For what?"

"For everything... I hurt you, I hurt everyone..." tears started slowly streaking down his cheeks, boiling and evaporating upon touching his heated skin. He grabbed and pulled on one of his lesser wings, but Tango immediately stopped him.

"Hey, hey, it's fine... I promise, I'm not mad... And the others will understand you, too, I swear..."

The phoenix was on a brink of despair, when his slowly relaxing mind started coming to terms with the events of the last few days - and it immediately tensed again. Why didn't Tango hate him? Why didn't he want to kill him for everything that happened? Was that a trap? Was he supposed to let his guard down, and then he'd be struck down again? The heat piling up in his chest was becoming quite overwhelming. If he tried releasing it now, he would hurt. It would hurt Tango, as well. It would probably burn the whole server to the ground, even more so than he already had. As he felt his chest tightening, he grabbed Tango's jacket and gripped it tightly, his talons digging into the thick fabric.

"So what do we do now...? Do I... Do I kill you?"

"I don't know... I'd rather not" Tango admitted with a silly smile. "But if you feel like you have to..."

"No, no! I- I don't want to! But-" his breath hitched again, causing him another coughing fit. "They want... They want me to fight you... But... we don't have to, do we...?"

Stop resisting, Phoenix. You know what you have to do.

"No, we don't" Tango smiled gently. "I have another idea... Can you get up?"

With hesitation, phoenix nodded. He pulled himself up from the ground, even though his whole body was unstable and shaking. His joints were aching with the strain of keeping him together, his wings dropped to the ground, too heavy for Jimmy to keep them up. Tango supported him as much as he could, his scaled fingers tracing little circles on his friend's veiny hands. His tough, rigid skin could barely feel the comfort. The blazeborn and the phoenix looked into each other's eyes for a moment, weighing their next words.

"...do you wanna dance with me?"

SCOGUE-Tember (2024)

Day “3”: Ship Bingo

They are EVERYTHING to me: I think I mentioned in last year’s Scogue-tember prompt list that Scott/Cyclops x Rogue/Anna Marie was the first couple I ever genuinely shipped at a young age (before that, it was mainly _insert random fav chara_ x oc in my head I made up just for them). And X-Men:Evolution was the first Marvel show I watched that made me genuinely interested in exploring the original comics to find more of Cyclops x Rogue (which to my surprise, never was a thing) and watch the movies. My love of comics and lore (especially the concept of the multiverse) is largely in part thanks to how X-Men:Evolution was such a great show and how strong the chemistry was between Scott x Rogue.

They drive me crazy insane/positive: The fact that my final art portfolio project was a mock-proposal of an X-Men:Evolution sequel + spin-off that consisted of them and their kids speaks for itself.

The aesthetic is impeccable: C’mon. Relatively Popular Preppy Guy x Loner Goth Girl? It’s so cliché, but it’s SO good!!! What makes it even better is that their personalities work so, SO well together. While this could have gone the route of the BST/Slap-Slap-Kiss/Uptight loves Wild that usually accompanies tropes similar to this, what I love is that this DOESN’T. Their personalities only clashed in the beginning because of the initial misunderstanding and frustration of them being on opposite sides, and even then they were drawn to each other. And even though Scott was distracted by his crush on Jean after the events of ‘The Cauldron - Pt. 1 & 2’, his moments of interacting and bonding with Rogue before and since then still spoke VOLUMES.

Relationship Goals: I think three of SCOGUE’s best characteristics are communication, understanding/empathy, and connection. Are they perfect? OBVIOUSLY not, but the episodes demonstrating these traits are still pretty significant. One of my favorite moments is during ‘On Angel’s Wings,’ when Scott is confiding to Rogue about his belief in angels or at least in the possibility of them existing. Rogue had laughed, had realized Scott meant what he said, recognized how insensitive she had unintentionally been, immediately and sincerely apologized, then listened to him with more compassion, while Scott immediately understood that she had not intended to make him feel awkward/embarrassed, silently forgave her, and continued to confide in her because he felt comfortable with her. This might have been a small thing compared to other moments they had, but it still stood out to me how close they felt to each other on that level.

I blorboed so hard that now they’re basically my OCs: IN MY DEFENSE, the multiverse is a thing, and since the actual series + the films and even the ‘92 animated series already took several liberties with the casts’ age range, relationships, dynamics, backgrounds, etc, I didn’t see the harm in altering/adding some things for my personal headcanon aus for SCOGUE (ex. Rogue’s biological parents, Scott’s relationship with the ladies vs 616!s, Rogue’s surprise connection with other Marvel characters and the eventual status of her relationship with her foster/adopted parents, Scott’s view on a personal life vs duty to the X-men, etc)

I need a 30k hurt/comfort fic on my desk by Monday: more specifically, I need to actually write or draw out the pages of 1) Scott’s and/or Rogue’s relationships with Jean and Remy starting to go in a direction neither of them are sure about and them confining in each other as friends; 2) Rogue meeting a dangerous mind-controlled mutant who can actually RESIST the negative effects of her powers and unwittingly holds the key to her actively learning about her past and the fate of her biological parents before she was ‘taken in’ by Mystique and Destiny while Scott accompanies her; 3) The trauma of Jean’s death and/or her eventual transformation into the Dark Phoenix + subsequent final/near-deaths of SCOGUE and everyone else involved; 4) SCOGUE dealing with the aftermath of the Dark Phoenix + their growing/rekindling/not-quite-smothered feelings for each other; 5) All the fun stuff involved with the struggles of finally getting together, staying together despite all odds, marriage, children!, and trying to balance marriage, family, and X-Men life…instead of, y’know, letting it remain in my head.

My mother has destroyed my soul and spirit my mind is fighting to not be destroyed by her too.

My mother turned into a monster due to others monstrosity and her own valid constant fight to stay alive with full mind and body and spirit. Her family drained her and killed her mind and body for three decades. We are in the third decade and she has resisted and fought to not become them but she has failed in the most challenging of times for her only child a grown daughter who would give her self to make mom happy. No more. I choose me. I will honor the mother that raised me and loved me by giving myself the best top quality of life I can give myself through the guidance and light of God. She is not the mother that cared and raised me and loved and liked to spend the healthily boundaries time as family. She is a woman destroyed by Ethiopian blood and relatives and countrymen who killed hers and my present and future. And she let them. She continues to while gaslighting me saying she is not.

She sunk her mother turned monster teeth into my neck and infected me with everything she taught me to not do or be. All bc of her own misery all because I didn’t stay off of the fucking bus when I got off like Tony Soprano says to Dr. Merino.

I’ve taken the teeth out and am draining and cleansing myself of the poison that she let off in my blood in my veins. As I boil and lose and hurt I will burn and turn into ashes and rise from those ashes like a phoenix with my own wings my own voice my own guts my own mind my own blood my own grace my own integrity my own faith my own autonomy and sovereignty cleansed and protected from my mother, her family, her country, her people, her community and her projected shit.

I do not blame my mother for a single thing. I am grateful and peacefully remove myself from her as our relationship stands. I give her empathy and prayer to meet again with love, respect, and acceptance as I am and as I cont. to grow as I extend that to her yesterday, today and tmw. But I will not repeat her mistakes. I will not sacrifice myself for my family. Never. Ever. I choose me. I will not be or end up like my mother or her family. I will not be or end up like my father. Thank you God for making me a latch-key kid. Hindsight turns out is everything.

May we get to and through Easter peacefully, prayerfully and safely, and may I survive and exit the christening from people who do not care for her or me but are from the same goddamn country and village she forced me to attend without asking my availability and then gaslight me about it. My mom was the best. Her true spirit and soul is under the rubble of being crushed all her life despite getting back up again. She can no longer keep getting back up. She can rest her head on my lap and we can tell each other how happy we are that those har heartbreaking times are in the past and that our present is so much bette. Hiiii I've been reading your TVE fic and have been very intriqued so far by the characters/lore you are building!

I have a question about one of the characters, the Voidguard; you seem to be hinting a lot about his backstory and I've been trying to piece it together, and was wondering whether it becomes very story relevant at some point? Since you give it quite a bit of focus (makes sense to be fair, he seems to be the most important non-arcane character in the story!) I was curious if that's the case, or if it is just there to flesh him out and help explain why he's helping Jayce and Viktor so much?

Oh, thanks, glad you are enjoying it so far! And it's kind of both actually? (the character in question for reference, including the two fic covers that have his "Cosmic Deity" projection as well):

So, primarily I drop a lot of hints/info about Angus' BG story to establish why he's helping Jayce and Viktor when he doesn't have to (And normally wouldn't), but there are things about it that sort of... eventually foreshadow certain elements of the story, and provide some key pieces of information that have not been revealed yet. (For example there's.....a MAJOR secret about the Phoenix Serum the Main Viktor utilized to try and heal his twin from the first timeline that Angus hasn't told them about - and he has a very good reason for that.)

When it comes to the actual backstory, he'll elaborate on it at some point, but I suppose I could share it here as well as the story by itself doesn't really spoil anything per say - and I REALLY should've written it down for myself to begin with, given it is totally different from Angus' canonical, non-arcane backstory and character.

(I'm going to omit the parts that will be directly spoilery, I.E some things that happened after he and Lucian manifested in Ether. I'll only focus on his "mortal" life.)

I'll put it under the cut so this post won't be too big of a wall of text/if someone who's reading TVE doesn't want to be spoiled about it, even if I'd say his BG story doesn't do that directly.

TL:DR of it is: Angus has been in Viktor's shoes in some ways, and Lucian (and their late bio sister) has sort of played the role of Jayce for him in a sense. (just, obviously an actual brotherly relationship)

(Side note: This story ONLY applies to this version of Angus, the non-arcane one has a different bg story)

Angus, his twin Lucian, and their OG late sister (whom I shall call Frankie Sr, in Angus' OG story Franziska IS his biological sister, whereas Lucian is not even related) lived in a different world than Runeterra, but it still included magic in it. Angus was born with a very rare and special power known as Blood Sage magic (canon to his OG story as well), which is known for being extremely useful in fields of medicine and psychology, given how much dominion it gives over both body and soul. Needless to say, such power is easy to misuse in the wrong hands.

The Belmont trio had quite the terrible upbringing that left Angus with a lot of need-for-control type of trauma, tendency to both be extremely protective over his siblings, AND bottle up his own emotions until they release in an explosive manner. (not a good combo with his magic, he accidentally hurt Lucian with it a few times, hence his brother tends to still get a bit uneasy when Angus gets mad).

He had a mentor who noticed his unique magic and the desire to do good with it, which did help them escape the abusive household. He specifically helped Angus to discover and master a very old, powerful Blood Sage magic spell that allowed utter dominion over one's mind and body in a manner that wasn't invasive to the soul, I.E meaning there wouldn't be any sort of resistance that'd cause dangerous complications. Angus wanted to use it as a more powerful form of healing that could mitigate the typical risks associated with magic-based medical work in their world, but was generally somewhat hesitant about the ethical implications of it, so he didn't utilize it as much as his mentor wanted.

However, his mentor had some...questionable patrons that wanted to utilize Angus' unique powers to create sort of an utopistic hivemind, where people could live pain-free. He was VERY against this, so these people basically forced him into becoming the Host for their hive, faking his death to his siblings.

What they didn't realize was, that it is a TERRIBLE IDEA to put someone unwilling AND with the kind of trauma Angus had, in charge of something that precarious. Things basically went horribly wrong in the Hive as Angus lost control of himself and turned it into a bit of a terrifying horror show (Think STEM from Evil Within, if you know the horror game).

His siblings eventually found out what actually happened to him and ventured into the Hivemind to save their brother. On the way Frankie Sr had to sacrifice herself so Lucian could still reach his brother and snap him out of it, as otherwise they both would've been lost and the unstable hivemind could've started to spread even further.

Lucian did reach his sibling eventually, and once he managed to bring Angus back from his furious, unstable state, they realized that there was no way for Angus to get out without killing any survivors left; so, he sacrificed himself to release the last people left alive safely. He offered his twin to leave and save himself, but Lucian decided to stay by his brother's side, since it wasn't like he had any family out there left. (Whether this was the right choice or not is up to interpretation, and not really relevant for this story)

After their death, both ended up in Ether as wandering souls, and Angus was eventually taken under the wing of the then-Voidguard Shaell Samaros, where Angus basically sealed away his old magic (mostly, he still has it stored away within his soul) and replaced it with the Void magic granted to him by his Adept status.
