Hey Shan!! IDK if you're planning to do a BL wrap up or superlatives or anything like that this year so this question might be a bit too early but um...what has been a few of your favorite first watches for 2024 bls?
Hi Eboni! This is actually pretty good timing for a list because most of the shows that will end within 2024 are already over! The only two I could see maybe making my list that have not ended yet are Love is Like a Poison (Japan) and Blue Canvas of Youthful Days (China), so I'll mention them here (fingers crossed they end well and stay favs).
That said, here are my favorite completed BLs of 2024 (alpha order)!
At 25:00 in Akasaka (Japan, Gaga)
Tumblr media
Two actors who first met in college are cast in a bl together, old feelings resurface, and the lines between their professional and private lives start to blur. This show is super beautiful and moody.
Cooking Crush (Thailand, YouTube or WeTV for uncut)
Tumblr media
Ten and Prem are my favorite of OffGun's many couples. Ten is a med student with food issues who wants to learn how to cook, and Prem is a chef in training. Their romance is super sweet and I also really like the side couple and friend groups in this one.
Cherry Magic Thailand (Thailand, YouTube or Viu, requires VPN)
Tumblr media
I still can't believe this show happened. How on earth did GMMTV manage to make a superior version of Cherry Magic?? Tay Tawan had a lot to do with it, along with a very smart adaptation. It's so sweet and funny and perfect (if you just pretend ep 8 doesn't exist).
City of Stars (Thailand, iQIYI)
Tumblr media
I was surprised by how much I liked this charming little Thai pulp. It had an interesting story with strong writing and the pair was very good together. More people should watch it!
I Became the Main Role of a BL Drama (Japan, Gaga)
Tumblr media
This is a short and sweet and note perfect BL comedy about two actors falling for each other while making a BL. Loaded with meta jokes about the industry and stan culture and very loving about it.
Knock Knock Boys (Thailand, Gaga)
Tumblr media
I am obsessed with this excellent Thai BL that not nearly enough people watched. Two couples, both compelling and sexy and fun, and amazing friendship dynamics. I want everyone to watch it!
Let Free the Curse of Taekwondo (S Korea, iQIYI)
Tumblr media
My top BL of the year. It's a second chance romance, you see the characters both in high school and later as adults and I don't really want to spoil anything else about it. It's beautiful, the characters are so compelling, and the story is masterfully told.
Love for Love's Sake (S Korea, iQIYI)
Tumblr media
This one is special and quite unique, and I also don't want to spoil much about it! It begins with a basic isekai set up that then goes to some unexpected places. Really, really beautiful show.
Love Sea (Thailand, iQIYI)
Tumblr media
Definitely my favorite spicy romance of the year. I really loved a lot about the story for this one, in particular the class dynamics that defined the characters and their relationship, and Mahasamut (played by Fort) is on my list of favorite drama characters this year.
Marahuyo Project (Philippines, YouTube)
Tumblr media
We didn't get much from the Philippines this year, but they did drop one absolute banger in this show about a fierce and proud gay kid who gets booted out of school in Manila and sent to live with his grandma and mother on a small island. He makes friends and enemies and starts an LGBTQ+ club, and falls in love along the way.
Mr Mitsuya's Planned Feeding (Japan, fansub)
Tumblr media
An excellent age gap romance about a young editor and the chef who writes for his magazine making food together and falling in love. Lots of fun side characters, too. I loved every minute of this show.
Perfect Propose (Japan, Gaga)
Tumblr media
Two old friends meet when one of them is in need of housing and one is on the verge of a nervous breakdown from a soul-sucking corporate job, and help each other heal. This one is short and sweet.
Ossan's Love Returns (Japan, Gaga)
Tumblr media
This one is technically a sequel, but you can enjoy it without having seen the original (and might like it better that way, tbh). One of the funniest shows of the year and featuring a main couple that is a personal fav and are now on my ride or die list.
Takara's Treasure (Japan, Gaga)
Tumblr media
This one is a simple story but so, so sweet. A cute little bean follows his mysterious idol to university and joins the hiking club to get to know him better. They get to know each other slowly and fall in love.
Unknown (Taiwan, Viki)
Tumblr media
ALMOST my favorite bl of the year, but we had a few issues on the back end. Despite that, I still loved it a whole lot. A family drama and a love story about two chosen brothers whose relationship changes over time. Easily the best BL Taiwan made this year.
Looking at this list, I am realizing how absolutely invaluable my Gaga and iQIYI subscriptions have become; it's where nearly all my favorite BL is airing.

2024 BL/GL/QL Round-Up Post
Since I did this last year, I thought for posterity I'd post another reflection on everything I watched that completed in 2024. For me, that means anything that started in 2023 but the last episode was in 2024 is on this list, but anything that was still be airing after 31 December 2024 11:59 my time (EST) is not on this list, even if the bulk of the show did air in 2024.
A few stats:
Tumblr media
[The image is TL;DR for what follows lol]
I watched ~150 discrete pieces of new QL content in 2024 (series/films) that I tracked [It gets complicated with specials and split seasons but I did my best to be consistent]; plus 10 things that I would consider "adjacent". For contrast, I listed 110 pieces of discrete content in 2023; that's a 45% increase year over year!
This clocked in at an est. 900 hours of new BL/GL and adjacent content (up from ~600 in 2023--which also tells us that the content I tracked was a little longer overall because that's a full 50% increase in terms of hours spent).
Tumblr media
The new content I watched came from 9 different countries [same as 2023]: (Cambodia [1], Philippines [2, down from 3], Hong Kong [1], Japan [32, up from 18 in 2023], Korea [20; was 19], Myanmar [2, up from 1], Taiwan [12, up from 6], Thailand [75; up from 56], Vietnam [4, down from 7]), China [5], and then 3 joint effort productions from Thailand/Korea [2] and Thailand/Taiwan [1]
This means just under ~47% of the content I watched on this list is from Thailand [close to the 50% in 2023]
So many more shows had multiple or varied distributions this year, but like last year ~85% of my content was on 3 platforms: YouTube [38%; down from 40%], GaGaOoLaLa [30%; up from 23%] and iQIYI [17%; down from 21%] Note: I'm in Canada and my access routes are sometimes affected by that.
Tumblr media
As unbelievable as it sounds with all that, I did actually drop shows this year! I dropped 9 shows, which is I think more than I've dropped in my entire previous 20+ years watching queer asian media combined (that might be an exaggeration but I do really hate dropping shows); 4 Thai, 3 Filipino, 1 Taiwanese and 1 Japanese (listed at the very bottom of this post if you want to be messy). I didn't track any dropped shows in 2023.
And if you're wondering how many shows there are in the world in total, I am aware of an additional 11 shows I just did not have time to even start (2 from Cambodia, 4 from the Philippines, 3 from Thailand, and 1 each from Korea and Myanmar). That does not include the vertical short reels that I didn't track this year--see @ellsieee 's tracking post for these--as well as several GL shorts from JPC media YouTube channel and Sastra film app YouTube channel that I just have not had time to try or even keep track of, though I do peek in on them to see if there's anything that looks particularly good, and I do always link these folks in my GL round-ups.
Tumblr media
All of this doesn't include re-watches or catching up on old shows, or non-QL queer media, or non-queer media (the hets sometimes do deserve rights); but does include films as well as shows.
I hope you all appreciate that with this much content, and with my general brand of being unable to make decisions, I really struggled to narrow down a top 10 list. What follows is the best I could do lol
Top 25 QLs I'd Recommend From This Year:
Tumblr media
[Links are self-indulgently to what I thought was the most relevant post I'd made this year relevant to that series/media, mostly spoiler-free pitches]
She Loves to Cook and She Loves to Eat S2 (Tsukutabe) [GL]
Love in the Big City
Love For Love's Sake
Tadaima Okaeri [anime]
Ossan no pantsu ga nandatte ii janai ka (Oppan)
Marahuyo Project
Knock Knock Boys
Let Free the Curse of Taekwondo
Love is Like a Poison (Doku koi)
Ossan's Love Returns
Twilight out of Focus [anime]
At 25:00 in Akasaka
Cooking Crush
Cherry Magic [anime]
Cherry Magic Thailand
Takara no Vidro
Soul Sisters / Twin Rabbits [GL]
Perfect Propose
Unknown the series
Paradise of Thorns [film]
Blue Canvas of Youthful Days
The Secret of Us [GL]
Mr Mitsuya's Planned Feeding (Mitsuya-Sensei)
The Time of Fever
A Man Who Defies the World of BL S3
I tried to put these in some kind of order but honestly if you asked me to rank them the numbering would change all the time and I would combust. The ones I liked best are closer to the top of this list. I also debated back and forth on whether Paradise of Thorns counts as QL so many times. But in the end I decided the main character was queer and queer romance of a sort was at the heart of the drama, so I've left it in this list even though technically it should probably sit with the 'adjacent's.
Worth noting that though only ~20% of the content I watched was from Japan, ~45% of my favourites were from Japan.
+5 notable pulp offerings worth mentioning:
Tumblr media
Bagan Beginning (Myanmar)
City of Stars (Thailand)
Gym Affairs (China)
To the Ex Who Hated Me (Korea, GL)
Under the Oak Tree (Vietnam)
I think I'll do a top 10 GL post separately since we had enough content to warrant a top 10 (yay!) but this is already long enough. I just want to take a second to acknowledge that this year was so much better than in 2023 when I didn't feel like I could recommend any of the new GL shows. Thank you content creators for better and more GL in 2024, please keep that energy for 2025!
Bonus: Not a QL but worth calling out:
Tumblr media
How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies (Thai film)
I saw both this and Paradise of Thorns in theatres during the Toronto International Film Festival and they were both so powerful! Extremely different tones but they surprisingly hit on similar themes, and very beautifully filmed. HTMMBGD was a complicated film filled with very rounded and complex characters, and I still think about it all the time. Very excited for more folks to have access to both of these soon.
Sidenote: The fact that I watched 45% more shows in 2024 than I did in 2023 and still managed to keep my rec list to 30 (*cough1cough*) does seem to back up the general feeling that though we had more content, we didn't have a proportional rise in good content. I do want to crunch those numbers in another post.
Double Plus Bonus: Best Older QL Content I watched for the first time in 2024:
Tumblr media
Life as a Girl / Joshi-teki Seikatsu (Japan, 2018; I'm so sad I missed out on this one for so long due to misinfo, it is fantastic! Thanks to @so-much-yet-to-learn for helping propel me to this one)
Iron Ladies (Thailand, 2000; thank you for the rec, @happypotato48)
Nacchan's Secret / Himitsu no Nacchan (Japan, 2023; thank you @furritsubs for making this watch possible)
Can I Buy Your Love From a Vending Machine / Sono Koi, Jihanki de Kaemasuka? (Japan, 2023; thanks to @nicks-den for making this watch possible)
I Fell In Love with the Villainness (Japan, 2023; watched because of a convo with @pilanthitasanilaphat)
Doi Boy (Thailand, 2023; this one I had on my list and just had to work up the energy to watch, but it was a beautiful film and I'm glad I did)
BL Metamorphosis (Japan, 2022; another thank you to @furritsubs)
Dear Dad (India, 2016; thanks to @neuroticbookworm for the rec!)
Salty Blue / Kakenuketara, Umi (Japan, 2023, thank you again @nicks-den!)
[I can't believe I forgot this at first] The Miracle of Teddy Bear (Thailand, 2022, thanks for going on that journey and writing great meta with me and for calling me out for forgetting @lurkingshan!)
There is so much good content in the world and despite my best efforts I haven't seen everything! So grateful to the fansubbers and people who write about past shows so that those of us who missed them the first time still get a chance to see them.
Tumblr media
In terms of my output based on all this input, I continued not lurking this year, and have enjoyed it very much; see my Top 10 posts from 2024 here as well as the content I linked in my recommended shows above--going through the process of adding those links really highlighted to me how much more I've written this year, and how much more motivated I am to write about shows I love. It's no surprise I had dedicated posts for most of my top shows! To highlight a few specific projects this year that I'm proud of, I participated in the Love in the Big City Book Club read and watch-alongs organized by @lurkingshan, which was such a fun project that I am grateful for, and I started my GL Odds and Ends posts (tagged with #gl recs) that I am still feeling out but am really enjoying seeing the impact whenever someone watches a show because they found out about it through one of my posts. I also made an appearance on several episodes of @the-conversation-pod and had an incredible time trying out different things in a quarterly 'Dispatch' and having some really rich conversations with @bengiyo and @shortpplfedup. I love this corner of tumblr that we've carved out for ourselves as a QL watching community, and I just want to say to everyone I've interacted with in 2024: Thank you, and wish good things for you all in 2025!
Tumblr media
Full list of 2024 shows under the cut for anyone curious! [Mostly in order it completed but may be slightly off--if a special aired immediately after the final episode I only list them as one thing and count the airing of the special as the end date, for example].

Tumblr media
Definition of Martial Arts
Martial arts refer to a variety of combat practices and traditions that have been developed over centuries for self-defense, military, and law enforcement applications, as well as mental and spiritual development. The term "martial" is derived from Mars, the Roman god of war, indicating a connection to combat and warfare. Martial arts encompass techniques for unarmed and armed combat, and they often emphasize discipline, respect, and the development of the practitioner's mind, body, and spirit.
History of Martial Arts
The history of martial arts is as diverse as the many forms it encompasses, spanning thousands of years and multiple continents.
Ancient Origins:
Martial arts have ancient roots, with early evidence found in Mesopotamia, Egypt, and Greece. In Japan, martial arts like jujutsu, kendo, and kyudo have deep historical roots. Hi, I’m Martin, so since this is my blog site, Imma talk about me. 😉 I’m currently a 3rd Year Marketing Major student at the University of San Agustin from which a lot of successful people in their respective fields graduated such as Edgar “Injap” Sia, who was once named as the youngest billionaire in the Philippines, the founder of the famous Mang Inasal that has at least 500 branches all over the country.
I’ve explored several sports before, such as basketball, taekwondo, football, volleyball and Arnis, which I was able to be part of Team Iloilo in the Batang Pinoy, but I guess I’m not really that much of a sporty person.
My current hobby is photography which started around last 2016 then freelancing and what led me to being part of the USA Publications. Funny thing, back when I was still in Assumption Iloilo, I wanted to study at the University of San Agustin to join the Little Theatre when they used to visit us during playfest but currently enjoying my college life as part of the USA Publications and learning a lot from my colleagues.
College life is tiring but trying to make the most of it and enjoy each bit.
Trying to steer my ship well no matter how big the waves are.

WHEREIN LIFE IMITATES ART
Tumblr media Tumblr media
TIMELINE . . .
ONE: THE CASE OF THE YOUNGEST STAR, YICHÉN.
The capital of Sichuan Province, Chengdu, also referred to as the "land of abundance," is situated at the center of the West Sichuan Plain and offers a distinctive and livable natural environment. Xuē Yichén, the older twin and the son of widely recognized businesswoman Sloane De Blanchefort and senator Aquillino Xuē, was born under a lucky star, undoubtedly the favorite of fate. Yichén has always been incredibly humble and wise, and even though he didn't have a close relationship with his father, he was showered with everything, supported him, and ensured that he had a comfortable and safe lifestyle to remember. As a child, he showed interest in reading books and exchanging perspectives with others, which resulted in his mind being loaded with knowledge—he was definitely mature for his age.
TWO: DISCOVERY IS A TREASURE TO HONE.
Yichén managed to find contentment having a playful banter with his twin brother, JunWei. Understanding his twin brother had never been a problem for him; in fact, he would just laugh it off whenever JunWei would often complain about their banter to their mother and grandparents. Yichén showed interest in taekwondo and soccer at the age of four. He told his mother up front that he wanted to spend the summer doing both activities. Even though he was only a young child at the time, he is well recognized for competing against a wide range of people and teams. Along the road of his soccer and taekwondo journey, he also trained in different places and met new people whom he considered as his acquaintances. He can play a variety of sports, including basketball and archery, making him a versatile athlete. In addition, he shown an interest in and skill with music, particularly with playing the violin, piano, drums, and guitar.
THREE: OUT IN CHAMBERS.
At the age of fifteen, Yichén decided to visit the Philippines during the summer when he heard that Yanli was staying in the country for the meantime. His mother gave him permission to stay with Yanli’s family, knowing that their families are somehow connected through the business industry. However, staying in the Philippines made it challenging for him to adapt his new surroundings and socialize with locals due to his foreign background and language barrier. Since Yanli could see he was having trouble with the language, she volunteered to help him learn some simple Tagalog words as a way to strengthen their relationship. And through this bonding that they had, Yichén made progress and increased his fluency.
FOUR: THE VERDICT OF FATE—A DREAMER’S WISH.
Yichén’s thirst for knowledge and justice constantly made him incapable of being satisfied with the informations he knows. He decided to pursue Bachelor of Arts in Political Science at the University of the Philippines, Diliman when he relocated to the Philippines. He also came up with the English name Yeshua Akieon so that people could more easily address him. He had consistently performed above average on all his subjects and aced his exams, being a role model and inspiration to others with a perfect attendance. A senior student council member encouraged him to join the council in his sophomore year due to his exceptional demeanor and performance. In addition, he joined their university's soccer team as an attack midfielder. They branded him the soccer prodigy because he was always the team's ace. Some have referred to him as the starboy since he is the one who really drives the team and is the center of attention during plays.
FIVE: WELCOME TO THE COURT.
Because of his intense dedication to his studies, Akieon earned Latin honors when he obtained his bachelor's degree. Later on, he also finished law school. Although he was always hard on himself and constantly put pressure on himself to perform well in school, he never let that hinder him from concentrating on his goal. All of his efforts had paid off when he was able to pass the bar exam and get his legal license. Venice also sparked his passion in modeling; he participated in his first catwalk show, the Amiri Autumn-Winter 2022 Collection, and they frequently shot photos together in their spare time. He has collaborated closely with photographers and creative teams for various editorial shoots and commercial projects. He has cultivated versatility in portraying different looks and moods, adapting his style to align with each brand’s aesthetic and target audience.
SIX: THE OATH TAKING; A ROAD TO ENDLESSNESS.
In the present, he is married to Soren Venice, a ballet prodigy who’s two years younger than him. They have been dating for a year now and got married last 20th of July, 2024. In order to make sure Venice was secure and wouldn't have a difficult time travelling around, Akieon would frequently insist on taking her to her university and picking her up after her classes when they were still dating. They like to travel to other countries and places whenever they have free time to spend quality time together. He’s now part of a band named HEX! Playing as the bassist.

WEEKLY JOURNAL 3 : Trust Yourself
I was lying on my bed, deep in thought, when I suddenly remembered myself a year ago at a Taekwondo competition under the Kukkiwon Club. It was such a nice experience, as I got to meet many people from around the world, like France, the Philippines, and more. It was a national-level competition, so I put in a lot of effort before the competition day. My trainer chose me for two events which was Sparring and Poomsae.
A week before the competition, we trained for 3 hours every day. It was so tiring, and the most exhausting part was running around one building for 10 rounds. However, it did help keep my fitness level up. Then, I got bad news from my parents that they couldn’t see me at the competition because of their work schedule. I was sad, but I didn’t let it ruin me. Instead, I used it as motivation to do my best and bring home the gold medal.
A few hours later, we arrived at our hotel and took a good rest. When I looked outside, there was a swimming pool! Without thinking twice, I changed into my swimsuit and went to the pool with my friends. We had so much fun before the competition day.
The next day began with me feeling really anxious. I stretched to make sure my body wouldn’t hurt after the game, and a bit of training helped sharpen my muscles. I checked the game board for my schedule, and my match was set to start at 10 AM.
After 2 hours of waiting, it was finally my turn. I was so nervous, and seeing my opponent made me even more anxious because she looked a bit bigger than me. When the whistle blew, the match began. I was so tense that I forgot how to breathe, and the cheering crowd didn’t help. Suddenly, a kick from my opponent hit me in the face, and everything went black. I fainted.
I woke up with medics in front of me, checking on me. They moved their fingers left and right to make sure I was alert and checked my nose to ensure it wasn’t broken. Thankfully, everything was fine, and they gave me an ice pack for my nose. I was a little sad, but I had one more event which was Poomsae. I did my best, making sure I remembered every move. I put all my effort into it and shouted strongly at the end to show I was still in it. The event ended, and we waited for the results.
In the evening, the results came out. I was so nervous, and surprisingly I got first place! I had a gold medal in my hand and I was so happy. I called my mom right away to share the news. Even though I didn’t do well in one event, I didn’t give up. I pushed myself to do better and I got the results I wanted.
To sum it up, don’t give up if you fail once, because if you keep pushing yourself, you’ll get the results you want.
