Living in the states as a Filipina-American kinda sucks because there's so much admiration for Japanese and Korean culture here that I feel more connected to those Asian cultures than my own
Where's my Tagalog-pop??? Where's the Tagalog punk rock at??? Why can I never find those songs with English translations?
The only connection I have to my Filipino heritage is the food and those random awkward phone calls from my grandma and cousins.
So yeah, for the new year I wanna learn Tagalog and listen to Tagalog music and learn more about Filipino culture
pls recommend Tagalog songs and/or youtube channels and/or language learning tips pls I really appreciate it

If you go to the Gold Museum in Ayala, you’ll notice how much of the treasures come from the Visayas or precolonial Bisayan kingdoms in Mindanao. We imagine this is only a small sliver of what brilliant gold was once held in the abundant rivers & waters of the islands. Although we can commiserate together about the loss, we treasure what does remain: the richness of our islander languages preserving our living cultures! ⭐️ We’re starting Bisayan Language Immersions next week, from August 31 - November 6, 2023 ➡️ Learn with us! bababisaya.com

Queen of the Birds - Philippine Eagle
“It is considered to be one of the largest and most powerful among forest raptors. They are also listed as critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) with an estimated number of only 400 pairs left in the wild.”

Mi Mejor Amiga (Wattpad | Ao3 | CH HHM Oneshots)
Brazil loved mocking idiots on the internet. Doing it with Philippines just made it better. There was nothing the two of them loved more than being able to meet up and shit-talk people until, eventually, many of Brazil's states joined in, and they ran through every single piece of gossip that had come about in the few months since they last met up.
“Oh, Phil, did you know you’re curing me of my lesbianism?” Brazil asked her friend as they sat, lounging around her home, just enjoying being able to exist in the other’s company.
“Oh, yeah, sorry, but asexuality doesn’t exist, so I needed someone to be my girlfriend, and you are the only good option,” Philippines joked, a familiar smile curling across his face.
“And yet you’re cheating on me with Hawaiʻi,” Brazil teased. Philippines snorted.
“Better that conspiracy theory than the other one,” he said. Brazil winced.
“Ah, that does it a little close to home, doesn’t it? Sorry,” she said. Philippines waved her off, a smile on his face.
“Don’t be. You did nothing to trigger anything, so it is all okay,” he said before brightening as he looked at his phone. “Oh my god, people are drawing the Brazilippines flag as a country person.”
“What? Give me that!” Brazil said, leaning over and snatching Philippines’ phone from his hand, looking at the (admittedly well-drawn) art before laughing.
“I’m not bothered by that; that’s just fun and cool,” Philippines said. “We should try to convince historians far in the future that Brazilippines is a real person.”
“You are a menace to society,” Brazil deadpanned. Philippines shrugged.
“Well, duh, how else am I going to use my free will?” he asked.
“Don’t even joke about that,” Brazil said, shooting him a glare.
“It’s my trauma!”
“I’m getting you a therapist.”
“Betrayed by my best friend. I can’t believe it.”
“Oh, shut up, Philippines.”

93-2831 - St. Mary Magdalene Church, Kawit
My next sketch on the Kawit Heritage Tour with #UskManila was of the bell tower at the Diocesan Shrine and Parish of St. Mary Magdalene. This Roman Catholic church is one of the oldest in the Philippines, with construction started in 1737. Our guide told us that when the Spanish arrived in the area in 1624, Kawit became a red-light district and to counter this reputation, the Archbishop of Manila…

The Philippines' unique history and cultural diversity have shaped its architectural identity. Incorporating different cultural and religious influences throughout the years has resulted in a rich tapestry of styles. Today, contemporary Filipino architecture showcases a fusion of global and local styles, combining traditional and modern design elements: https://www.ianfulgar.com/architecture/architecture-of-the-philippines-then-and-now/ . .

tbh i like artemis from the young justice tv show so much because she was a mixed asian girl who didn't really look asian. that could be blamed on just how the show's animation style looked, but her sister jade looked way more like their mother than artemis did, who resembled her white father very much. i saw myself in her, someone disconnected from her mother in phenotype and culture. the genetics are there, but one has shown through dominant and the environment has raised her away from any kind of asian influence or culture that might have been hers. it was so important to me, and still is, that i got to have her as a character i could look up to because even though her asian heritage is hardly ever spoken of and isn't a plot line integral to her character in the show, it still mattered and made artemis more than whatever biases or standards were placed on her from looks alone. we can talk about how her mother was represented in the show, and how her sister jade subsequently fell to the same fate, and how neither of their stories or heritage matters a lick to anyone except to the characters themselves, but i just want it to be known how important a mixed girl like artemis was to me
#ive struggled with being mixed ever since i can remember#ppl dont look at me and immediately clock me as having asian heritage- often the first thought is native or hispanic#ive felt so separated from this entire side of myself for as long as ive been alive- esp since my own mother wont engage with it#we have no traditions beyond american marketing#we have no true heritage or family origins to speak of#i have virtually nothing to cling to solidify this part of me beyond the phenotype of my mother and the thin film that covers my own#so artemis was so important to me as a kid- seeing that kind of representation (even if unintentionally done) did sm for me as a kid#also sorry this is coming out of no where i am tired and surrounded by my fathers family#who i look nothing alike#and how this morning a white man drove me and my mother to the airport and he said 'ive driven you before! to the Philippines right?'#and my mom had to gently laugh and say that she wasn't Filipino and theyve never met before#its just things like that that make me wish for stronger connections that extend beyond the inherited genetics#artemis crock
