Headcannon:

When Izana is stressed or angered, he starts speaking Philipino. So Tenjiku would have to pull out a dictionary to understand what tf says. Still doesn't help because he talks too fast and they don't understand the words.(I also headcannon that Kakucho and Ran pull out a dictionary out of thin air and have the others questioning the rules of physics)

I can see that! I do think Izana would've taken the time to learn Filipino after finding out where his family is from, he seems to find importance in that type of thing. And of course why not use his new language skills to his full advantage? I always felt weird about the fujoshis hate because the first trans masc person i knew was a philipino youtuber that made vids about being a fujoshi. I'm not one myself but one of the reasons i figured out that i was trans was trough an mlm fic and i always get nervous about bringing it up because i worry id be dismissed as a fujoshi

Saw a tiktok (not recently. im still off tiktok) of a philipino-japanese lady who mentioned her name being Maria Rosario and how Chuunibyou that is, and all the people in the comments agreed. Isn't that so amazing to see. To me and probably to other people in very catholic romance-speaking countries the name seems anything from incredibly mundane to a name you'd expect a 60 year old to have, but definitely nothing close to cool. but to those people it's cool because it's this edgy stylish foreign cult of blood, passion and an endlessly grieving mother. it's also the thing that slays vampires.

Things I enjoyed about Werewolf: the Apocalypse

I thoroughly enjoyed it, throughout the 90s and early 00s. I'm not a spiritual person, but I dug the animist fantasy. It was crunchy and flawed and such, and weighed down by the lolpolitics of the very very very leftist funkilling nannies that were at odds with the western culture of storytelling and folklore, but it was good.

And then Werewolf 5th edition came out and effectively was like being served vegan Thanksgiving turkey to go with a video on how Christopher Columbus wasn't just evil, but that white people were the devil, and America is an illegitimate country.

Sometimes I ponder trying my own take at urban fantasy with a spiritualist/animist bend that brings back the essence of what I enjoyed, outdoes Werewolf: the Apocalypse at being a compelling dark gritty urban fantasy game starring zoanthropes, and is a superior storytelling platform that pays homage to folklore without removing the FOLK from folklore.

For gods sake. They were so fucking terrified of the idea of even dignifying the idea Norse myths of werewolves are things, because to even suggest that Europe has any sort of indigenous culture inherent to being European, would entertain the idea white people HAVE any distinctly European culture, rather than just being imaginary and illegitimate oppressing "real" peoples and cultures.

So the funny viking werewolves (THAT HAVE ALWAYS BEEN MULTIRACIAL AND ACCEPTING OF ANYONE THAT COULD FIGHT AS WELL AS THEM) were removed from playability and made MAGA-type radical racist assholes. Just. They didn't even want to permit them access to the game, so wrote them out and given the hard in-character goodbye.

They could've just renamed them like they did the two Native American tribes, reimagined them. But no. Rather than reimagine the Get of Fenris, they had such antipathy to the idea of a viking culture werewolf tribe because, "those white supremacists might play them!" they straight up just made them bad guys.

The people writing Werewolf ideologically hate the idea of any sort of indigenous European folklore or any sort of sacredness to it. But they'd fall over themselves apologizing for the idea of incorporating Philipino or Arabic mythological figures.

I just despise how some things to them are profane and disallowed, some things are approproiation and offensive to use, and some things are okay because, "they aren't even a real culture anyway. :^)" all based on ideology. To people coming to the game that speak English as a second language and don't have European roots of any kind, I bet a great deal of them find this weird policy to be insulting. The Japanese for example wouldn't go on a tirade about how awful white people are for incorporating Susano'o into a cheesy Saturday morning cartoon, like it's perverting a culture's sacred character.

Modern people know such cheap, pulp crap isn't offensive, nor is it cultural exploitation. When in pop culture and fictional entertainment and not presented as true, it's not religion, it's just fiction.

Modern Paradox/World of Darkness writers seem to vehemently hate that and shape the game as if that shouldn't be true.

And in my eyes, that means the niche is being poorly filled. And ripe for supplantation.

Best of 2020 TV Shows #20: Japan Sinks 2020 (NETFLIX)

Fitting for spot 20 we have a disaster.

Two months after the olympics, the Mutoh family go about Thier lives in greater metro Tokyo.

Until another devastating earthquake wraps the islands in devastation.

The family, runner Ayumu, gamer Go, swimmer Mari and electrician Koiciro all find each other at the local Shrine but their nightmare only begins as the earthquake from before set off a chain reaction leading to the beginning of the sinking of the Japanese archipelago.

This is a five hour meditation in the meaning of family and how the bonds can crack and fray in the worst of moments but no matter what happens love is still there.

Even in the face of cataclysm.

Spectacular animation also follows in addition to some pretty shocking moments that will leave you almost shaken. One scene near the end in particular is raw.

Hello Ms. Laura! Do you have any information about Asian dragons (specifically East or Southeast Asia) and whether or not they hoard gold or other treasures like their European counterparts do? If not, maybe just some other neat facts about them? Thank you!

Asian mythology is definitely not my strong suit, so I will have to make do with rather general and not clearly sourced knowledge, but I will do my best!

What we’ve come to call “Asian dragons” exist in folklore all over (south)east Asia, but in this case I must say this is definitely ‘folklore’ in the broadest sense of the word. Dragons, both as a symbol and as a character in stories, are largely interwoven with religious beliefs. They definitely also show up in folktales meant primarily for amusement, but their role as deities and guardians cannot be overstated. While they are certainly differences from culture to culture, from my limited information about the dragons in China (lóng), Japan (ryū), Tibet (brug), Korea (mireu), Thailand (mang-gone) and Vietnam (rồng), they all seem to be primarily benevolent (but fearsome) water deities.

Translating these creatures as “dragons” might not even be that accurate. A lot of them are certainly serpent-like, but they neither behave nor look like European dragons. They are usually described as a composite of various creatures, do fly but rarely have wings, are connected primarily to water and secondarily to fire, and generally neither kidnap princesses or hoard gold.

In the Philippines they have more monstrous dragons, some astronomical in size and capable of swallowing the moon and sun. And Taiwan puzzles me a bit, since they do seem to have the dragon as a protective deity, but they also have a story about two dragons stealing the sun and moon out of the sky.

In Indonesia, Malaysia and Cambodia most dragons are more closely related to the Indian serpent nāga, which is also linked to the water and (semi)divine, but usually not quite as powerful as a dragon.

While these Asian ‘dragons’ don’t exactly have hoards like European dragons do, they are connected to riches and treasures. In stories from various countries – China, Japan and Vietnam come to mind – dragons often show up as kingly figures, in possession of a whole underwater palace full of riches.

More interesting, perhaps, is that dragons are often depicted holding or guarding a single gem or pearl. I have never really found stories about them, but it is part of the general understanding that dragons possess these items of great power:

An old legend from Japan describes how Ryūjin, the dragon god of the oceans, kept magical gemstones in his palace that could control the tides.

In Tibet dragon images are placed on the roofs and entrances of temples, holding a mani, the jewel that is said to embody Buddha’s teachings and powers.

In Korea the most powerful dragons sometimes carry a large orb meant to be a yeouiju, which could grant even the power of creation. Sometimes explained as a version of a mani, but also connected to stories about dragons catching them as they fall from heaven.

Meanwhile Chinese dragons are often shown with a (flaming) pearl in their claws or tucked under their chins. This pearl is associated with the same kind of blessings a dragon possesses, everything from fortune to immortality. In one Chinese story a golden dragon sleeps on the bottom of a natural well with several “full moon pearls” clutched to its chest, which is the closest Asian equivalent to a dragon hoard I’ve found so far. I also know a story where a brave girl steals a dragon pearl to save her people. But she only manages with the help of another dragon and in the end she becomes a dragon herself.
