Afternoon Dress | c. 1868 ・・・ By the mid 1860s, the skirt morphed from rotund to conical, and the advent of gored seams allowed a smooth tapered waist to expand gradually and elegantly. Hooped crinolines remained essential, however, to give the desired volume. This satin skirt has nine pieces at front and sides and one straight gathered panel at the back that flares into a sweeping train -hinting at the bustles just over the horizon. Skirts were often accompanied by two bodices to extend their usefulness; this skirt has a high-necked bodice for formal daytime wear, shown here, and an evening bodice - which isn’t included in the museum’s pictures 😫. The last twenty-five years of Birch’s life were in many ways professionally disappointing. Yet throughout the nineteenth century and into the twentieth century, Birch’s vision of the city and its environs began to find its place in the city’s iconography whether reproduced on high quality porcelain, as book illustrations, or as inexpensive mass produced pieces of ephemera. Birch’s work as an enamel painter also received recognition in the art world. William Birch’s legacy has been far-reaching and long-lasting. An example are these two vases on loan to the Library Company from the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
