Wednesday, March 15: UFO, “Electric Phase”
R.I.P. Pete Way (1950-2020), Paul Raymond (1945-2019)
Lights Out was only slightly more focused than UFO’s previous two records, but the combination of Ron Nevison’s tight production and streamlined writing on a handful of key tracks, along with the addition of Paul Raymond on keyboards and rhythm guitar was enough to break the band in the US and make some headway in the UK.  As a track, “Electric Phase” wasn’t dramatically different from No Heavy Petting, as it was slightly lurching and vaguely Sabbath with the crunching guitars, but Nevison brought more clarity to the proceedings, and Michael Schenker was getting more confident as a player with each record.  Phil Mogg’s vocals had their usual swagger, but he too hadn’t yet fully developed into the lovable hooligan who frequently punched his way through the late ‘70s. There was a distinct heaviness to the track that stood apart from the band’s most famous material, but “Electric Phase” was full of personality and showed how UFO was building towards their legacy.

Moggs Motel - Moggs Motel
Release Date: 6 Sep 2024
Tumblr media
Following his health problems and demise of his band, UFO frontman Phil Mogg, one of the most influential rock vocalists worldwide, is back with a new album.
For ‘Moggs Motel’, the British musician with the distinctive voice is joined by Tony Newton, the bassist and keyboard player from the band Voodoo Six (who have previously toured with UFO) and long-standing associate Neil Carter (guitar, keyboards, vocals).
'Moggs Motel' contains twelve timeless songs showing that Phil hasn't lost any of his artistic charisma or his love of unbridled creativity. Joe Lazarus (drums) and Tommy Gentry (guitar) to complete the line-up on the album which was recorded at Iron Maiden’s Steve Harris’s studio in Essex.
The starting point for ‘Moggs Motel’ was a chance meeting of Phil and Tony Newton at the American embassy in London waiting for visas shortly before the lockdown. Phil says, “I mentioned that UFO were going on a farewell tour and I’d be taking a step backwards but didn’t want to retire completely. He said he had some material back home and would send it over and when the opportunity arose, we could maybe put together a few ideas for songs and see if anything interesting would come of it.
"Meanwhile, Neil [Carter] was also starting to send through some tasty tunes. This concept was ultimately the beginning of the new album."
Phil also trawled through his archive, looking for previously unreleased song fragments that hadn’t suited UFO. Neil Carter and Tony Newton also opened their treasure chests and contributed ideas. The result is a haunting rock album of varied compositions that could never be mistaken for UFO.
The compositional freedom applies not only to the music, but also to the lyrics, which see Phil mix autobiographical elements with fictional ones with his typically British sense of humour and tell his stories with his usual unerring powers of observation and disarming plays on words.

UFO Icon Phil Mogg’s MOGGS MOTEL Release Second Single + Video 'Sunny Side of Heaven'
As anticipation builds for the September 6 release of UFO frontman and founder Phil Mogg’s Moggs Motel, Mogg himself raises expectations even higher with his second single from the album, “Sunny Side of Heaven.” It’s over 50 years since Mogg and co convened the first ever line-up of UFO, but it did not take long at all for them to establishing themselves among the crowned heads of metal,…
