I'm Raghad, A Pharmacy student, I am like any Palestinian girl living through war, suffering and very harsh conditions and I miss many of the basics of life.😥😥
Despite all this, I strive to continue my education, but I need your generous efforts at this time more than ever. 🙏💕
I have started my third year of study at the Faculty of Pharmacy, I had hoped to live the new year in the arms of my university among my friends, but the occupation completely destroyed the university. 💔🥺
From a study desk & the internet to nothing! From quiet to the noise of war, cuz of the destruction of my univ., I continue my education remotely, and this represents an obstacle to my study of practical subjects & learning the pharmaceutical industry. I was supposed to be creative in the field of pharmaceutical industries through experiments in university laboratories, but unfortunately there are no more laboratories💔🥺😥‼
I ask you to continue supporting me until I achieve my dreams ‼🙏
I would like to thank everyone who helped me, whether by sharing or donating 💕❤💜 🫶

2024 fic roundup
@cheeseplants created this ask/tag game, and I've been tagged by @addledmongoose and @harlotofupdog, here we gooo
What fandoms do you write in?
200% Good Omens. First proper fandom experience. First thing that forced (aye, forced) me to write a fanfic. Huge obsession.
If I were to write for anything else, it might be Our Flag Means Death, or Doctor Who, or perhaps House M.D. or some flavour of Star Trek. Or a crossover between one of those and GO. I'm a completely normal amount of obsessed with Aziraphale and Crowley.
How many words have you published in 2024?
*goes to ao3 stats page*
*hits "2024"*
...220,232 words
What the whole entire fuck!?
And there's another three chapters left on Scorn to go before New Year's, so we'll comfortably surpass 231k. How in the actual fuck is that possible.
What is your greatest achievement this year?
Getting this comment:
Tumblr media
What are your favourite top three fics you wrote this year?
Not Single Spies (the third part of Nice And Ominous, which can be read on its own or with the two preceding parts); The Co-pilot; and I'm going to say Scorn and the Saint-Maker, although that's far from finished, because it's been the entirety of my past half-year.
Not Single Spies (part III of Nice And Ominous: a reluctant eschatology of the Second Attempt) Rated E; 61k words Second Coming/post-S2 fic; plot-driven
A man with pale hair turns up in Saint Peter's Square, naked and without memory, and Crowley's old sense of Aziraphale's location snaps like a twig. Heaven is down another Supreme Archangel—but the new Christ is already on Earth (in France, to be precise) and the Second Coming is well underway. And Crowley works for Hell now, but really, he works for the good of humanity; pulling on every friend he has to stop the end of the world.
There is some smut in this, but it's only three sections and they're all skippable. The rest of the story is rated T with no major warnings.
The Co-pilot Rated E; 4k words Human-ish AU; shameless smut
An un-English heatwave, a few open shirt buttons and the demonic entity possessing an innocent Londoner conspire to make long-time friends Az and Tony finally get over themselves and bone.
Scorn and the Saint-Maker Rated E; 97k words so far (WIP) Human not-actually-AU; sorta-post-S2; plot-driven, smutty, mathsy; four plots in a trench coat
Doctor Crowley has turned truancy into an art form, lecturing only under sufferance. Doctor Fell has signed up for his undergraduate course and has no plans to let him slack off. When a faculty member is found dead, our heroes start forming uneasy suspicions. What was the occult symbol drawn next to the body? Why does it feel like they’ve known each other forever? How is Crowley supposed to tell police that he thinks the murderer is a demon he summoned 35 years ago? And what about that statue that’s the spitting image of the victim?
They've been turned human. Now they're academics in Scotland. Romance, weirdness and (skippable!) smut ensue. The fic has some warnings, so check the tags.
What was your biggest pit of despair moment?
I had a nasty week in August, when I got depressive symptoms as a side effect of a necessary medication and spent ~10 days convinced everything I did was shit.
I'm also kind of in one at the moment, but without the pharmaceutical explanation/excuse. I'm just... urgh. Things are stuck. It's. It's a thing. Idk.
What have you learned?
You're expecting me to list everything I've learnt related to writing and fandom and fandom writing in less than an entire academic essay? Are you out of your entire mind!? (❤️)
Big things: I've learnt that I do have the capacity to finish big stories; that things I write are good enough that people want to read them and look forward to reading them and give me all these amazing compliments on them and go slightly feral sometimes; and that if I'm enthusiastic enough about maths, I can trick some folks who didn't even like maths into sort of liking maths.
Smaller things: A smattering of fancy vocabulary. How to paint with watercolour. How to draw Michael Sheen's nose and David Tennant's lower lip. The fact that I have a massive praise kink. More than I knew there was to know about em-dashes and en-rules. Heaps of random facts about the Bible, angels, demonology, poetry, Scotland Yard, Shakespeare, wine, dicks, queer identities I don't have, and queer identities I do have. And a bunch about how to watch/read/consume media with my eyes open and my brain switched on.
What fic did you want to do but never made it off the ground?
I still low-key want to continue The Co-pilot into... something. And That Berry Ice Cream from last December has been sort of asking for a follow-up, which just hasn't happened.
I had this idea, shortly after that week in November that the Americans don't like to think about, for something short, snappy, and a little cathartic; a fuck the system-type deal, both to that political shitshow and to all the sad crap fucking over the GO fandom lately, and I started to write it but got stuck not even a thousand words in. Maybe it just wasn't that good of an idea.
Did you beta any fics? Any favs you want to shout out?
I did my first toe-dipping of a beta read just the other month, for Easy Access by @ModernDayKlutz. I've not dared to jump into beta:ing properly for fear that my old flakiness will resurface and make me disappoint a person I've made a promise to, but this one seemed contained enough that I felt I could contribute. Especially with Kilt Knowledge™️.
What three fics have you read this year that you love?
THREE!??!?
All right, so I'm looking through my bookmarks, and, as it turns out, That Fic I Keep Recommending Basically All The Time was one I only read - or at least, finished reading - early this year!
Mint Tea by @copperplatebeech - 31.5k words; rated E - is one of those fics that half the fandom have heard about, right? I don't know if it happened to hit me at a formative point in my fandom life or if it's simply That Good, which is also very likely, but thirsty-well-hung-Dom!Crowley lives in my head for free and will not move out, it seems. It's scorching and funny and sweet, and when I say it gave me the idea to try some... things... which I hadn't tried before, in... certain parts of my life... 🔥🫠
Fanfic, uh... changes lives, y'all! Ahem, well then, onwards:
Come as you are by hiya_angel - 4k words, rated E - this gave me some of the experience reflected in that gorgeous comment above. The angst is minimal and the smut is gorgeous and wonderfully sweet and I adore this fandom for making me feel hope again and again for all this trans stuff that's still comparatively new to me.
Submitted for Your Consideration by @zehwulf - 19k words, rated E - contains possibly the most spectacular description of subspace I've read in... ever? And when it comes to bowling me over with porn, I could probably just pick anything by ZehWulf because whatever story I pick up it ends with me sitting there absolutely sweating. And feeling fuzzy inside. And maybe also crying for joy.
HERE'S A FOURTH ACTUALLY, YOU'RE NOT THE BOSS OF ME:
Lucid by @twilightcitysky - 35k words, rated E. It's unfinished and I barely even care at this point, because something about this fic changed me. It's So. Fucking. Good. It's one of those (rare? Not in this fandom! But a little rare, probably) stories where the smut is absolutely plot-crucial. It's also excruciatingly clever and angstier than I thought I would like (I was wrong! I LIKE IT) and the characters are great. And it's written just beautifully.
What ideas are percolating for next year?
More Scorn. (Don't trust the projected chapter count. Knowing myself, there'll be more of them. Or I might be done with less. It's a completely unqualified approximation.)
More Co-pilot, maybe? (I have Ideas.)
A slightly more fantastical fic that goes into a smut genre I haven't really explored at all before. And which has made me research goats' pupils.
Plus, I want to look into making podfics more. Maybe get better at it. Maybe even try out doing voice work for money? (I'm talking to a guy, it's completely wild, but damn it might be a thing I could do)
Who do you want to thank?
@addledmongoose (quite unintentionally) brought me to Tumblr. (She wrote a review of Nice And Ominous, and it was so lovely, I wanted to go there and like it and respond to it properly, so I just had to create an account, you know? No other options.) I'm so glad I'm here.
@bakingcat made excitable comments about my linguistics-nerdery-snuck-into-sex-scene and made me realise you can actually make friends in fandom.
@klikandtuna wrote the fic which I was a completely normal amount of obsessed with this summer, and which led to (via an instance of fanwork of the fanwork) me being flooded with love from strangers one random Friday and getting put in contact with that voice work guy. We also had the most wonderfully grown-up conversation about a tricky thing, for which I am so very proud and grateful.
@harlotofupdog came straight over to read Scorn almost right when I started posting it - I can't quite remember now, but the timing isn't the important bit - and wrote some absolutely glorious comments. D'you know you're the first writer whose work I'd already been painfully obsessed with, who's also expressed obsession with mine? D'you know how bloody cool that is??
And finally the unhinged smutgoblins of The Beta Fishes The Big Fucks server - idk who to thank anymore because I can't recall who invited me (it was past 3am and I'd just watched Michael Sheen shirtless for an hour, you'll have to forgive a guy) but all of y'all are weirdos and I love to hang out with yous and draw dicks and discuss writing and scream about Rivals and definitely not put mustaches on anyone.
No-pressure tags (in addition to everyone tagged above - please feel free to consider yourselves tagged-tagged if you like) without checking who's already been tagged in this before, because that's A Lot of Work that I don't want to do:
@wiblywoblytimeywimey754 @brenna @majnoonathelibrarian annnnd @kiratastic, pretty sure this could be modified to work for an art perspective too? Right? (If you want)

could you elaborate more on your analysis on class in academia? especially the thing about TAs being capable of being class traitors. found your post very intriguing and would like to engage more in this topic
most grad students are not independently wealthy, which is why we pay for school by taking positions as teaching assistants (TAs) or research assistants (RAs). these positions are in turn the actual reason why the school admits grad students in the first place: it's cheaper to pay our stipends, which are often below poverty-line wages, than it would be to hire more faculty. grad students are increasingly responsible for teaching, grading, lab work, and research. depending on how nice our advisors and professors are, we might get co-authorship for some of these efforts, or some lines on our CVs. what we often do not get is legal designation as employees: generally we are classified as students or as ambiguous in-between categories, which means we don't get standard labour protections like sick days, and we can be fired expelled at will. in the us, this also results in ambiguity over basic questions like whether the school is allowed to simply stop paying our stipends if we go on strike: if we're not employees, we're not protected by labour law even in jurisdictions that do protect a worker's right to strike. the grad school experience is largely defined by the labour laws in your jurisdiction, by the culture in your department, and by your relationship with your advisor, who is either tenured or tenure-track and thus has far more job security than you do. advisors have tremendous power over their grad advisees, a situation that makes us easy to abuse or simply to economically exploit (this latter is a particular issue in stem fields where your advisor is also your PI, and being a grad student also entails being a lab employee).
despite all this, grad students frequently have absolutely horrendous class solidarity: for example, our unionisation efforts (when we can even get our shit together enough to push for a union at all!) often ignore non-academic staff, who form a critical part of the academy and are just as exploited as we are, if not often more. grad students also have a deeply nasty habit of trying to emulate our professors in the way we interact with undergrads: condescending to them, trying to make their lives harder, refusing to make allowances for students struggling with deadlines or workload for any reason. often grad students see ourselves as 'temporarily embarrassed professors' rather than as what we are: a very low rung on the academic ladder, most of whom will never land a professorship because statistically, there simply aren't enough of those positions. again, remember that the university is incentivised to hire more grad students and grant more phds than 'the market' needs, because the institution is relying on us as a source of cheap labour. in some fields, a phd can lead to a lucrative industry job (pharmaceutical companies, military contractors, &c); in others, it can lead to several years of underpaid post-docs followed by unemployment or 'under-employment'.
whereas a tenured or TT professor often has a group of employees grad students working under them (typically this is grant-funded), contingent or adjunct faculty work on a semesterly or yearly basis and are paid much less, protected much less, and subject to being let go any time the university reviews their contract. adjuncts are another popular way to reduce labour costs, and, like grad students, are becoming increasingly used to replace tenured roles. some departments have been gutted to the point where they run almost entirely on adjunct and grad student labour at this point. you might think adjuncts and grad students would therefore make natural allies in struggles for better work conditions and compensation. however, adjuncts are still more than capable of being abusive or just assholeish to grad students, and both grad students and adjuncts are difficult to organise because of overwork, fear of losing what professional status they do have, and the fact that adjuncts are often forced to work at multiple institutions at the same time, or to hop between institutions frequently. in cases where serious labour coalitions do start to arise, a university will often offer superficial concessions to adjuncts and/or grad students, like a one-time pay increase (which is not something most grad students receive on a yearly basis, which means in real terms our stipends are usually actually decreasing over time).
anyway, to return to undergrads: in the academy's propaganda self-perception, it is a force for cultural enlightenment and individual self-betterment. undergrads are, then, paying for the privilege of receiving education, here configured as a gift bestowed upon the masses to create an uplifted citizenry and an enlightened society. this is, of course, horseshit. the university is conservative in both structure (resembling a medieval guild, eg the tenure system and the entire structure of grad school-as-apprenticeship) and mission (serving as a class barrier system that enforces and ideologically justifies social stratification through the granting of limited and expensive professional credentials). most undergrads are not wealthy, and many are going into debt for their degrees, which are presented as tickets to future jobs and economic security. it's a system that promises a select few the opportunity to become part of the ruling class rather than the exploited one, and that itself generates massive profits for its upper-level administrators (presidents, deans, and so forth). so yea when grad TAs try to act like tenured profs by treating undergrad students like shit i will call them class traitors lmao

Triazenolysis: A new chemical process to produce raw materials
Researchers at the Schulich Faculty of Chemistry at the Technion have developed a new chemical process to produce raw materials for the manufacture of polymers, pharmaceuticals, and agricultural compounds. In a paper about the process in Nature Chemistry, the researchers detail how they developed the new process and conducted a computational analysis to explain its mechanisms and key stages. The study was led by doctoral students Alexander Koronatov and Deepak Ranolia, and postdoctoral researcher Pavel Sakharov, under the guidance of Prof. Mark Gandelman. Called triazenolysis, the new process converts alkenes—common organic compounds such as petroleum—into multifunctional amines useful in various research and industrial applications.

I see your Ochem hate/love discussion and raise you pharmaceutical (medicinal) chemistry. It's like Ochem but worse. Now you not only have synthesis reactions and mechanisms and NMR but you have the added bonus of having to remember a fuck ton of drug structures, many of who do not have the business of being that fucking large. Itraconazol, Amphotericin B, Rifampicin and Glecaprevir, I hate you. And not only that, you need to know where you could change what part of the structure of said drug to make it last longer or work better or whatever. Why do so many drug names sound the same. Maybe I had would have an easier time remembering antiviral drugs if they didn't all fucking sound the same.
(Also you are totally right in hating Ochem)
Love, a pharmacy student
Okay so I looked them up and holy fuck

What the hell are these. They're so huge tumblr can't even show them whole, you have to click on the pictures to see them. What.
Also, my faculty offers a degree in medicinal chemistry and we have a couple of students in my year who transferred from there to our degree ("just" chemistry) and they all agree medicinal chemistry is straight-up traumatizing. I have insane respect for you pharma (and adjacent) people, the amount of knowledge you have to integrate to do such an important job is just 😳

Umbrella Pharmaceuticals - Chapter 49
Summary: Alfred Ashford starts secondary school. Alexia Ashford receives psychiatric treatment after attacking her psychologist. Alexander Ashford reveals the CODE: Veronica project to his mother.
I
The pinnacle towered above a complex of stone and brick encircled by a high, thick stone wall. The wall bordered the only road connecting the estate to the London suburbs. A bronze plaque embedded in the stone announced the entrance to King Jacob II College.
Elizabeth bade him farewell on the threshold of the main building. Ailing with age, she barely leaned back to kiss Alfred on the cheek and had to leave after greeting headmaster Leslie Campbell and housemaster James McNamara-Douglas, both members of Jacob's Circle and attached to the respective clans. From that moment on, both men would be responsible for Alfred's care and education for the next five years.
The headmaster led him to his office to explain the social and educational dynamics of the institution. Alfred, now dressed in his frock coat and stiff collar, carried his bulky leather suitcase without complaint and with the housemaster on his back. King Jacob II College, the headmaster began, was part of the Jacobean educational project designed by Veronica Ashford and Rupert Campbell to ensure the political and economic influence of the remnant Stuart lineages in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and imperial possessions. King Jacob II was founded in the late 19th century as the boys' boarding school for the recruitment of the English and foreign elite concentrated in London. At the same time, Queen Anne College was erected as its female counterpart. Due to the success of the project, King Charles I and Queen Mary I colleges were opened in Edinburgh for the Scottish and Irish elite. Because of the geographical division, the funding and governance of the Scottish boarding schools remained in the hands of the Campbells, while the Ashfords took over the governance of the English pair. This separation also had to be respected by the families, which is why Alfred was compulsorily transferred to King Jacob II after preparatory school. And, unsurprisingly, the administration of the four schools rested exclusively with Jacob's Circle. There was no one, not one teacher, who was not an associate or member of the Circle. On the contrary, most of the student body came from a diversity of social and cultural backgrounds, with a handful of foreigners, and a small Jacobin minority. This Jacobin minority was concentrated in King's House, and it was these boys who always served as prefects. Alfred would be housed in a single dormitory in King's House, where he would share residence and communal life with thirty other boys. Finally, because he was Ashford, custom dictated that he was entitled to a couple of exclusive dormitory privileges. Alfred chose a television with VHS and the Atari 2600. He would get the movies and video games.
The course began with the one hundred and fifty students gathering in the auditorium to listen to the headmaster's speech. A giant painting of Veronica Ashford and another of Rupert Campbell hung on the wall, and Alfred felt the pressure. He broke out in a sweat and disguised the movement of his nervous hands by pretending to adjust his trousers. The painting of Veronica Ashford anticipated reading the biography of illustrious pupils like his great-great-grandfather, great-great-grandfather and grandfather, who contributed so much to the civilisational development of Britain. And, ultimately, in an adjoining room for the assembly of the student body with the faculty and school authorities, Alfred read the name inscribed on the wooden panels of Stanley Ashford, Thomas Ashford, Arthur Ashford, Edward Ashford, and Alexander Ashford. His name would be engraved after his father's just as his future son's name would be placed after his own. Alfred felt a knot in his stomach. Victory or death.
As in prep school, a first week of grace was granted for the freshmen to settle in. However, the week took an unexpected turn when the group of five prefects from his house bowed to him and invited him to join their group. Alfred accepted without a second thought. The prefects passed his test on his knowledge of the school and the staff and promised him their selfless protection. Alfred heartily welcomed the initiative as a qualitative improvement on his bitter and lonely experience at Watford. However, he soon discovered that his relationship with the gang was not peer-to-peer, but primus inter pares. He discovered this when Roderick, one of the five boys, brought him another boy to be his fag. Technically, the school had banned fagging last year, but Alfred could enjoy the approval of the prefects to dispose of one secretly. He ordered the boy called Henry to take care of the cleaning of his dormitory and to serve him tea for nothing, because it was Roderick who managed this service. In this way, no one disturbed him with trifles. But there was a second matter. An unexpected and disturbing fact that captured Alfred's imagination and all his attention.
The punishments. A month after the first day of school, Harvey, another prefect, invited him to come to the garret of the house. Alfred followed Harvey to the trapdoor. Before opening the lid, he held out a black Halloween mask simulating a rabbit's head to Alfred.
“Put it on.”
In the garret there were three children, two thirteen years old and one fourteen. The children were frightened by the sight of the monstrous rabbit. The five prefects rounded them up in a circle, and one of them asked the rabbit:
“How do we punish them?”
The rabbit called to one of the prefects to whisper the verdict in his ear. The prefect understood the rabbit's words and carried out his will. Three prefects held the victims while the other two wielded belts.
They knew where and how to strike so as not to leave marks or draw blood. Harvey put the rabbit mask in a hidden box and congratulated the prince on his creativity.
“See you next time.”
At first, he distracted himself by daydreaming and sketching children and prefects in a notebook. One of the teachers caught him but ignored the scene Alfred had drawn: a detailed and realistic depiction of the five prefects beating the three boys with their belts. He got bored with the belts and reimagined the scene from other angles and with other tools. First, he designed simple tools such as scissors, pruning shears, sticks and ropes. Secondly, he traced the shape of bladed weapons and instruments of torture such as the iron lady. And thirdly, he included new victims in the scene. He secretly made a quick sketch of his classmates and housemates and then introduced them into the scene, which constantly changed location and furnishings. In a catacomb, in his room at Ashford Hall, in a cemetery, in a shopping centre or in a laboratory with the Umbrella logo printed on the wall. As the number of locations and their difficulty increased, so did the definition of the bodies, their postures and expressions. He wanted it to be realistic and so he signed up for painting classes instead of marching with the cadets[1]. The painting classes improved his skill, as well as supplanting his abstinence for punishment. He once painted a picture in which he framed the reason he clung to the memory of the first punishment: power of influence, desire for importance and, above all, mitigation of emotional emptiness. The positive emotions of the punishment outweighed the negative emotions of family abandonment and parental absence. If he thought about the punishment, he forgot about other thoughts such as whether his father loved him or whether he was disappointed in him. Alfred wanted to prove his worth to him, but locked up in the boarding school he could think of no way to prove his manhood to him other than by wearing a kilt and killing Englishmen. Fortunately, the anguish didn't last more than two months. Harvey reappeared in his room with the rabbit mask stuffed in a sports bag.
“Let's go.”
Under his guidance, the punishments increased in variety, but habit drove him to seek more and be more reckless. To his face, he insulted fellow housemates for being lower class, was racist towards the only pair of Indians in King's House, beat up a middle-class boy who got too smart with the Stuart, shoved a boy's head down the toilet and forced a pair of freshmen to skinny-dip in the stream that ran through the estate. They lashed out with conservative slogans at the only leftist in the building while burning a picture of Fidel Castro with a lighter. At this point, Alfred's existence was limited to studying and inventing new outrages with which to reaffirm his status and evade the uncomfortable questions raised by the emotional void. A reign of terror in which he gave free rein to his limitless brutality.
In December 1982 Alfred made out with Henry. He had masturbated to a porn magazine that Roderick had smuggled into the study room he shared with him and Harvey. There weren't any girls at his school, so he went to try whoever was closest to hand. The two kissed roughly out of inexperience and without excitement on Alfred's part. In any case, Henry's warmth did him good and he threatened his subordinate to keep their relationship a secret.
“You're an asshole,” Henry replied.
In January 1983 Alfred showed up at the headmaster's office. He left with two letters and a reprimand for having been caught smuggling in a couple of VHS movies and a video game. He had to be subtle if he didn't want to lose his privileges. The Exorcist and Invasion of the Body Snatchers. He watched them with Henry and loved them. Unfortunately, Henry was a lout with Atari’s Adventure.
The first letter was signed by his grandmother. She wrote that his father and sister were well in Antarctica and that she missed him very much. She wanted to hug her grandson again and go on a picnic with him. The second letter was signed George Frederick Benjamin Stanley Owen Ashford-Campbell-Douglas-Stuart from the Soviet Union. He knew who he was: his grandfather's younger brother Edward Ashford. Spurred by morbidity and surprise, he read the second letter.
II
Dear Alfred,
Perhaps you know who I am. We have never met in person, and never will, though you may have seen me in some picture my father forgot to tear up or burn. I will be brief and to the point. I am your great-uncle George and I feel an obligation to warn you about our family and about your future. What you do with this warning, and even with this letter, I leave up to you, but I want to tell you in writing what I know and have experienced.
You were born in 1971, three years after my older brother's death and more than ten years after my father's death. I imagine that Alexander must have spoken highly of both of them, as it is a moral imperative for a son to speak well of his father and grandfather, who nurtured and educated him. But my father and brother were not good people. They pretended to be, but inside them there was always an unparalleled penchant for contempt for human life. However, it is unfair to blame only the two of them. After all, we all share origin and responsibility for the lifestyle that our great-great-grandmother Veronica adopted and that we have uncritically cultivated because, as has already become evident, class, status and privilege suffocate the heart of humanity. Veronica and Rupert were no exception.
Do you know what lurks beneath the factory floors that Veronica ruled with an iron fist? But what can I tell you about her that you don't already know? A prodigy daughter of capital and empire. Thief, traitor and genocidal, just like her brother Rupert. Out of cowardice I missed my only chance to cremate her remains. Given her background, it did not strike me as odd that her only offspring, Stanley, was a friend of Aleister Crowley. I recall that in his later years he believed he was a messenger of Lucifer. He made Ouija boards to communicate with his mother's mummy and spent a fortune acquiring a huge secret collection of books, statuettes and esoteric artefacts. If you're curious, Stanley's secret basement is hidden behind one of the library's bookshelves. The book entitled De Vermis Mysteriis activates the opening mechanism. See with your own eyes the horrors from beyond the grave that he collected, for the horrors he perpetrated in the factories and in the colonies were destroyed so that no evidence would remain.
Grandfather Stanley had a pair of twins: Thomas and Arthur. Thomas was an alcoholic whoremonger with a taste for human flesh and my father, well, what can I tell you about my father. A staunch anti-communist, champion of the monarchy and conservative arrow, my father designed the propaganda that convinced British youth to get involved in the two world wars, built that undignified prison in Colorado and worked with the CIA on MK-Ultra, mistreating those poor teenagers in Florida.
When you are a child and naive, you tend to glorify the sins of the father, and idolatry blinds the masses. I was made aware of my mistake through my older brother. As the main heir, I thought Edward was taking it seriously to please our father. But I was wrong. Underneath his handsome and hearty facade, lurked a twisted and ruthless man who instigated and supported civil wars and coups in Latin America and Asia for the imperialist cause. It was he who was enraptured by the effects of the atomic bomb on civilian populations and who always advocated servility and starvation as the means to pacify a society as terrifying as ours. It was Edward who arranged for Alexander to travel at the age of sixteen to Indonesia to participate in the government's eugenics programs against the civilian and indigenous population.
I still wonder how a man capable of being so good to his family could finance the execution of such acts against the human species. The last I heard of him, he had founded a pharmaceutical company with an Englishman. My brother always had a very unique worldview: war and compassion, paternalism and authoritarianism. My brother, like my father, wanted to see the dream of a world once again ruled by the élites for the élites, as was the absolutist Stuart monarchy. My father and brother believed that we would return to this old order once the Bolshevik fever had passed.
That's why I left. For this reason, my father expelled me from Ashford Hall and deprived me of inheritance and family. The only thing I retain from my former life as an aristocrat is the name and surname, the accent and manners. I don't miss home, yet I am nostalgic for my lost innocence, when everything was vibrant and pure, devoid of danger and worry.
Tired of suffering, I fled to the Soviet Union alone and without a passport. Fortunately, or unfortunately, I did not die and rebuilt my life in Moscow after the Great Patriotic War. Sometimes I regret my decision; at other times I bask in my natural compassion for the unfortunate souls who were not born like us. There is no place on earth that is free from human shortcomings, but I intend to resist and not falter in my destiny to help others and to let myself be helped.
That is why, Alfred, I wanted to write this letter as a warning about the family you were born into. I last saw Alexander when he was twenty-three years old. So is the father, so will be the son. His determination for the old order is as strong as his father's was.
I know you have a twin sister, Alexia. After this warning, all I can say to you is to love each other so that you will not allow either of you to fall into empty illusions.
I wish you a happy life.
Your great uncle,
George Ashford
III
It was as if she wasn't there; she felt her body, but not her person. Sleepy, paused, on the verge of falling to the floor if it weren't for the fact that she had been tied to the chair by the abdomen with a belt. On her right wrist was an identification bracelet and to her left was a barred window. A table and a vacant chair with rounded edges made up the only furniture in the aseptic room.
The door opened. A dark-haired, bearded man sat in the chair. He carried a folder with him, the contents of which he arranged on the table. The bearded man was dressed in a doctor's coat with no logo or identification. He read each paper carefully.
The bearded man took out a blank sheet of paper from the folder and a pen. He wrote at the top of the sheet.
“I am Aaron Green, clinical psychologist and psychiatrist.” He smiled sympathetically. “Do you mind if we start with some basic questions to get to know each other better?”
Motionless. Aaron jotted down on the sheet of paper.
“If you don't feel like talking, you can nod or shake your head. We can still talk this way. Might you like to?”
Nodded.
“Your name is Alexia Ashford?”
Nodded.
“Alexia is a very beautiful and unusual name. Is it of Greek origin?
Nodded.
“I've read the rest of your names, but I prefer to stick with Alexia. Agreed?”
Nodded.
“You were born on January 24th, 1971?”
Nodded.
“Do you have siblings?”
Nodded.
“An older sibling? Younger?”
Denied.
“Twin?”
Nodded.
“Is it a boy?”
Nodded.
“And what's his name?”
Silence. Aaron consulted his papers.
“Alfred? Like Alfred Hitchcock and Alfred the Great?”
Nodded.
“Alfred is also an interesting name. Germanic. Its literal meaning is ‘advised by the elves’. Curious.”
Silence.
“Your father's name is Alexander Ashford?”
He nodded.
“Like Alexander the Great, I suppose.”
Quiet.
“Do you know where you are? The place, not the room.”
Denied.
“The Margaret Ashford Institute. The social engineering institute your great-grandfather Arthur founded.”
Silence.
“Why are you here?”
Silence.
“I'm going to do one thing. I'm going to try to reconstruct what happened and you nod or deny depending on whether you remember, okay?”
Nodded.
January 12th, 1983. She was working. An alarm suddenly went off. A female voice boomed in the room: ‘The self-destruct system has been activated. Please all personnel must evacuate immediately’. Her first reaction was to run to the laboratory attached to the study room. A disproportionately large ant was fiddling with its antennae on the glass of the tube. She stood in front of the insect, blank. Behind her, monitors displayed the data of an unfinished investigation. She approached the excited ant as the alarm massacred her eardrums. She touched the glass with a trembling hand. She was going to cry.
A door slammed. Alexander. There was blood on his face, but no wounds. He hugged Alexia so tightly that he choked her. He lifted her off the floor and carried her out of the study room. The ant stayed. The research stayed.
Alexander ran as if possessed, and at no point did he let his daughter touch the floor. They ascended to the lobby, where Martin and Jonathan greeted them armed. Alexander left his daughter by the elevator doors and grabbed the shotgun Martin handed him. The three men shouted at each other. Alexander bent down to talk to her. She didn't hear his words, only that his gaze radiated hatred. Martin and Jonathan led the way, Martin with an assault rifle and Jonathan with a shotgun. Alexander protected his daughter in the rear.
They walked out into the hall. Alexander caught her hand and forced her up the stairs at full speed. Her shoulder ached. Martin and Jonathan followed behind them.
Five minutes until detonation.
Alexander shot a man in the head. The impact of the pellets scattered the grey matter across the concrete and steel corridor.
In the helicopter, she looked at her hands. Bloodied.
Blank.
January 17th, 1983. Session with Dr Sarah Charleigh. She hadn't spoken since the incident. She seemed catatonic.
“What is the T-Veronica?”
She had written that name on the board they had given her to communicate with them. The T-Veronica was...
She stuck a pair of sewing scissors into Charleigh's thigh. All the way in. She slapped her across the face. According to Aaron's testimony, she was screaming at the top of her lungs. She broke furniture and various objects. She saw her face in the mirror and smashed her head against the glass. She drew blood on her forehead. Completely out of her mind, she had to be restrained by four. Aaron and his team sedated her and transported her by ambulance to the Institute. She was drugged and strapped to a stretcher, then in a single bedroom and now in an interrogation.
What is the T-Veronica?” Aaron repeated.
Anger. Sadness. Fear. Joy. Surprise. She didn't understand her emotions. She shifted in her seat. In front of her, she had a disproportionately large ant. Her first discovery and research project. But there was something else. She was a queen. A queen that was hers. Alone, confined in a cage and chained to an existence subject to the will of others who did not want to understand her, who considered her a fairground attraction. A queen who had learned to coexist with her affliction and to keep at bay the dilemma of whether or not to continue living; because in that cage she had contemplated herself and had concluded that she hated herself.
She hated herself for trusting her family.
She hated herself for hating her family.
She hated herself for loving her family.
She hated herself for allowing others to impose their dreams on her.
She hated herself for taking on those dreams as her own.
She hated herself for allowing others to laugh at her.
She hated herself for having smiled at those who laughed at her.
She hated herself for her conformity.
She hated herself for her emotional weakness.
She hated herself for loving Alfred.
She hated herself for loving.
She hated herself for not imposing her will.
That was the T-Veronica: her will. Her will be done on earth as it was in heaven. Her will to live and to transform her being into something else.
Into the queen. A nasty queen. That she would not feel that she would not suffer, that she would only be pure volition. To cease to exist to exist again. She no longer wanted to be Alexia.
The T-Veronica disintegrated in the explosion. The queen died. Alexia stayed.
What is the T-Veronica: she went mad because she remembered that she had lost it forever.
Forever.
Aaron finished filling out the sheet.
“Alexia.”
Alexia didn't raise her head. She didn't have the strength.
“We're going to help you. Trust us.”
The Queen is dead, long live the Queen.[2]
IV
Elizabeth hardened her words.
“You're a fool.”
Alexander didn't fight back. He had told her. He couldn't take it any longer and told her. The CODE project: Veronica. The incident at the Antarctic base.
He was depressed and did not know how to carry on his father's and his mother's legacy. Elizabeth insulted him for meddling in this absurd conspiracy. His father approved the project, and he went ahead believing that it would satisfy him; that this was what he had to do as a son. A father-son pact to go straight ahead, as he had always been told to do. Edward had loved his son, but he had always been accustomed to prioritising ends over means. Edward took advantage of Alexander so that he would carry out the wishes of the former one even after the death, as Elizabeth said with the utmost sincerity.
Elizabeth stroked his hand. Alexander began to cry. For decades, he had sought ways to positively influence his son to avoid disasters such as those described. However, fighting Arthur on his home turf was virtually impossible. Taking advantage of the fact that she was a foreigner, a Protestant and a non-conformist, Arthur manipulated the family to cast Elizabeth as an ignorant outsider and to focus Alexander's education on Edward. Elizabeth had to adopt a passive, complementary role to her husband's in order for the marriage to survive and thus retain custody of their son. But the results were nil. Arthur and Edward guided Alexander to be exactly like them, and they succeeded.
The Antarctic base exploded to kill the employees who had rebelled against Alexander's tyranny. The son's excuses for this decision were pitiful and absurd, and he could not fool his mother: he killed them out of hatred.
But she could not loathe her son. She would not do it for her last chance: Alfred and Alexia. He said to Alexander: I forbid Alexia to work until she comes of age, and I forbid you to see your children until I decide. Alexander bowed his head tearfully.
“But I want to see them,” he protested, sobbing.
“Who?”
“My children.”
“You only get one chance,” Elizabeth burst into tears.
They hugged each other.
“You only have one chance...”

This is what work got me for my bartered body that was slaughtered eight to ten hours a day, I murdered my humanity for poverty wages, and ever growing anxiety that leveled up in different stages.
The corporate masters played us against one another, brother versus brother, for the survival of the most loyal adherents to capitalistic principals.
Our four O one K cashed out before we reached our retirement day. Our bonus was pain, loss and regret for the time we couldn’t get back, and an avalanche of medical bills.
A spoonful of sugar and the medicine kills, with side effects too numerous to list, but it doesn’t matter to the pharmaceutical industry because we are barely acknowledged as a statistic, just a hash mark profit.
If we we’re lucky, we got forty to fifty good years, and a couple of crap ones stacked on the back end, with diabetes, and high blood pressure. Our best scenario was to not get too old, and have to see everyone we love grow cold, but the real nightmare was to remain here while time took our senses, memories, family, and friends and left us with limited faculties and arthritic aches.

Got my vintage washi tapes for my journals
There was a tumblr challenge about memorizing one poem each month. I did one too. O me! O life! By Walt Whitman
And classes have begun with the entire faculty coming in two days go. My internals are next week
And I am calm??? But I am grateful. This mindset did not come this easily
Did my own readings for Introduction to Biological Systems from Ross and Wilson
Read about Cell Organelles from another publication for semester exams.
For inorganic chem, I completed reading the textbook about Pharmacopoeia and limit tests
And for Pharmaceutical Analysis, I had theory class today, so decided to give a reading about the first unit before class about impurities, limit tests and processes of titration.
Did odissi today, but for maybe 45 minutes instead of the usual, because I need to prepare for my internals as well as spend little time on writing.
I hate skipping on all of my activities which I like just for exams, so i shorten each activity during exams now. That way I get to indulge in all as well as have time to study

Pulp Storytime #52: STUMBLE in the Bronx!
March 17, 1935. We started with Florence and the others at the Edgar Allen Poe cottage in everyone’s favorite borough, the Bronx. They were giving Rupert’s pal J.R.R. Tolkien a tour of NYC, and this was a place of literary significance. Unfortunately, the front door burst open, with two revelers “wanting to see the Raven guy”. Florence politely but firmly sent them on their way, but noticed that the street was full of drunks. But not normal St. Patrick’s Day drunks; ones sloshed, pissed, and thick as a rush-hour subway car. It was time to investigate… But also get lunch. The two Brits (Professor Callahan and Kabir) rolled up their sleeves and began punching their way across the land once colonized by Jonas Bronck. (Two people in the group had lore at +3, so the trivia quotient was high.) It wasn’t long before they reached the relative safely of the Simon’s family deli!
The group strategized over matzoh ball soup and knishes. Penny took some time to let a crushing Devika down easy (“You’re too young, you’re not my type, and since you’re co-owner of Florence’s detective agency, you’re my boss.” “Uhhhhhh…fair…”). Winston and Simon reminisced about simpler times (tracking down and destroying a floating Nazi airbase).
Kabir, the only one on mission, rifled through the newspapers. There were some ads for green beer, but someone had clipped all the coupons on the other side. Luckily, they knew someone who was both an expert in beer and the Bronx…STEEL EAGLE! The players cleverly avoided main streets and the subway, instead heading east and grabbing a boat. (There was a fun subplot here where the very British duo taunted some Irish mariners. One crashed chasing them, and Penny was obligated as a lifeguard to save his life…after sobering up and apologizing, he just stayed by the boat the rest of the adventure.) The fivesome (Everybody and J.R.R.) sailed up the river to Steel Eagle’s haunt, the Yankee [stadium] Tavern. Callahan asked how they would know if Gyatso was in. The prof was answered by a body flying out the front window. The Tibetan spirit of the Bronx and his Polish sidekick Eddie Pulaski were in their element, brawling through waves of boozers. After clearing the floor, the bartender volunteered information: Someone was giving out tons of green beer, for free, and every bar in the city was serving it. Why not? It’s hard not to profit on free! “Well, the reason why not is…” The Oxford debater gestured around the destroyed bar. The players argued about who had the cash to pay for it, while Professor Callahan repaired the phone…and rolled a perfect result. Somehow, he had turned the nickel-taking device into an international radio, able to reach any phone. Following up on the suspicion, Florence called the Midas subsidiary, Crane Pharmaceuticals. The secretary acted extremely suspicious when asked about any breweries, especially the one uptown. Whatta lead! Further up the river, the players smelled the factories before they saw them. Tolkien and the mariner stayed on the boat as the players entered the industrial district. And while breaking in was easy, nobody in the group had any faculty for stealth. They were immediately caught by the evil chemist responsible… Their old rival Célia Nachtnebel! She summoned her security team, and hit a button, sending Florence into a vat of the green beer!
Seeing the torch singer swim out safely, the group was overly tactful and indecisive. The guards responded to this with gunfire. This was a major fight, and the mook squads were a match for the heroes (except for one defeated by Kabir’s words, which sent the security squad into unstoppable infighting). Célia dropped her bon-mots on Penny, infuriating her. “I didn’t know Devika’s coattails reached all the way to the distillery. And you haven’t gotten anywhere without riding them.” Callahan threw some elbows, clearing his way to some massive machinery and sabotaging it. Florence held her own despite a lack of fighting talent; her time as a hobo meant she could take some hits. Célia Nachtnebel fled, with Penny compelled to chase her through a dangerous maze of equipment. The Hawaiian pushed through the door to an outside catwalk… But it was a trap! Below, a janitor sprayed a crowd of rioting locals. Green beer covered the New Yorkers… And Celia tried to hurl Penny down three stories into the fray!
The gambling prodigy managed to keep her balance, and as the two grappled, Penny pleaded with the chemist; didn’t Celia remember her rescue in Montenegro? Unfortunately, whatever gratitude Celia had was boiled away perfecting alcoholic madness! And worse, Penny was being leaned off the edge… “It’s just a shame, An’Te… I wish I was killing the girl.” Elsewhere, Kabir searched for Penny. Obviously he was the leader of the group (Since he had the Order of the British Empire). It would be ridiculous to not take care of all the group members… and he arrived just in time to save Penny from Nachtnebel’s manicured choke! Meanwhile, distillery security noticed all the dials going into the red. They didn’t want to die for a crummy gig… But if Professor Callahan didn’t undo what he did, the entire building would blow up! Outside, Penny scrambled to her feet, and tried to rush away…and was sprayed by the hose man! Only her years of lifeguard training allowed her to grab the catwalk instead of being knocked to her doom! Meanwhile, security, Florence and the Prof struggled to undo his sabotage. With only seconds remaining, they released the steam-tension and drained the toxic beer into the waste tanks. Kabir appealed to Celia’s sense of self-preservation. Surely there was more to life than sabotaging New Yorkers, causing misery? She paused, thinking over his words, then gave him a piece of her mind. Straight onto his dress shirt. Penny blew smoke off her purse pistol. Celia scowled. “What a bitch.” The madwoman took half a step before plummeting to the brickyard below. ——— Back at the deli, the group had dinner and debriefed. Drunk Florence was willing to eat anything. Callahan used his phone hacking skills to call Doc Midas’s private outgoing phone.
Unfortunately, the professor wasn’t a great judge of character. He was bowled over by Midas’s lies (“I never met that woman, this wasn’t authorized, she’s fired… What do you mean dead?! Well, I guess I should donate a few barrels of my all-natural health elixir to the hungover masses…”). Oh well. Time for kugel. Penny gave Devi an overprotective hug. Elsewhere, Jimmy Pulaski comforted Steel Eagle. “I don’t know why they didn’t invite you, boss. Maybe they weren’t going to punch anybody.”

Hello everyone,
I am Ahmed Abu Al-Amrain, a dedicated student at Al-Azhar University's Faculty of Pharmacy, where I currently rank second in my class. With three years of intense study behind me and two more ahead, I am on the verge of completing my academic journey.
But my experiences go far beyond the classroom. During the war in Gaza, I volunteered in local pharmacies, ensuring vital medications reached those in need, even as the situation grew more dangerous.
Prior to the outbreak of the conflict, I gained valuable experience volunteering in the toxicology and drug analysis lab at Al-Azhar University, under the mentorship of a respected professor. I also initiated research on a pharmaceutical product commonly available in the Gaza Strip.
When the conflict escalated, my family and I were forced to seek refuge in Rafah, living in a tent. Those were some of the most challenging days of our lives, where even securing enough food was a daily struggle.
I recently resumed my educational journey at Al-Azhar University through online platforms. However, I am facing numerous challenges, including a weak internet connection and the lack of a reliable power source. The electricity has been cut off throughout the entire Gaza Strip since the onset of the war a year ago, and we continue to suffer from this ongoing issue.
Despite all these challenges, I remain determined to continue my educational journey and complete the remaining credit hours of my two years at the Faculty of Pharmacy. Every day, I walk nearly four kilometers under harsh conditions of bombardment and rain to reach areas where electricity and internet are available. These spots rely on solar power, which has become the sole source of energy in Gaza during these difficult times.
I launched this campaign to help me continue my educational journey and find a solution to the ongoing electricity crisis. The solution lies in purchasing a complete solar power system, including solar panels, large batteries, an energy regulator, and special electrical cables. However, these items are scarce and extremely expensive, making them unaffordable for the average resident of Gaza.
Therefore, I kindly ask for your support in acquiring this system to help me pursue my education.
Thank you all!
Ahmad Abu Al-Amrain

Recognising Rewards
Responding appropriately to pleasant or unpleasant events, in scientific terms rewarding or aversive stimuli, is critical for our health. Neurons in a part of the brain called the dorsal raphe nucleus (DRN), that produce the neurotransmitter serotonin, play a key role in signalling reward. Yet drugs boosting serotonin levels do not restore rewarding feelings in patients with depression, suggesting additional pathways are also involved. In mice, other serotonin-producing neurons, in the median raphe nucleus (MRN), appear to have opposite effects to the DRN: rewarding stimuli inhibit MRN neurons, and stimulating them triggers negative responses. To measure mouse perception, scientists monitored their behaviour and facial expressions; as shown here, mice move their tongue and ears when enjoying a sugar solution, but stimulating MRN neurons dampens this response, suggesting their perception of reward has changed. Understanding this interplay between serotonin pathways will be crucial to developing better treatments for disorders like depression.
