Pictured is the intersection where Old Highway 100 and Route 66 meet at the abandoned and haunted location known as The Tri-County Truck Stop (formerly The Diamonds restaurant/gas-stop) near Villa Ridge. Here, too, is also where ghost tale meets ghost tale as down this stretch of Highway 100 - along abouts the next five miles - it is said that people have encountered a back-packed hitchhiker. A Phantom Hitchhiker looking for a ride to this very truck stop. He is said, by those that claim to have given him a lift, to be a cordial young man - right up to when he disappears/vanishes/dematerializes just as the driver reaches this haunted intersection. Its time for another of Mr Hares ghost stories. Do you believe in ghosts? The open Road has many stories of mysterious hitchhikers. In many countries and towns each have reported a phantom hitchhiker. One of the most famous stories or urban legend involved a man driving home late one night. Whilst driving he saw a young woman at the side of the road. Feeling pity he pulled up and offered her a ride home. She accepted and entered the car. He started to drive, she was very silent. When asked if she was alright she replied I am cold. Out of pity he gave her his coat. When they arrived at her home. He stopped the car and turned to her but she and his coat had vanished. Shocked , he knocked on the door of her home. Two people opened the door, when asked about the pale young lady who claimed to have lived there. They replied it was impossible for their daughter died many years ago in a car crash. The man in disbelief drove home in fright. The following morning he went to the graveyard and found the womans grave and there draped over young girls grave was his coat..... This is how many of the phantom hitchhiker stories go, sometimes the phantom would lead the driver to their resting place. Whether you believe or not its certainly fascinating.
