THE PHANTOM HITCHHIKER OF OLD HIGHWAY 100 (AND ROUTE 66) - Villa Ridge, Missouri. Pictured is the intersection where Old Highway 100 and Route 66 meet at the abandoned and haunted location known as The Tri-County Truck Stop (formerly The Diamonds restaurant/gas-stop) near Villa Ridge. Here, too, is also where ghost tale meets ghost tale as down this stretch of Highway 100 - along abouts the next five miles - it is said that people have encountered a back-packed hitchhiker. A Phantom Hitchhiker looking for a ride to this very truck stop. He is said, by those that claim to have given him a lift, to be a cordial young man - right up to when he disappears/vanishes/dematerializes just as the driver reaches this haunted intersection. THE HAUNTED TRI-COUNTY TRUCK STOP ON ROUTE 66 - Villa Ridge, Missouri. Originally established as The Diamonds gas-stop/restaurant in 1927, this location quickly grew and morphed into a bustling 24-hour Route 66 roadside truck stop and motel. The original site burnt to the ground in 1948, but was soon rebuilt and eventually turned into the art-deco style Tri-County Truck Stop building that still stands, now abandoned (having closed in 2006). This allegedly haunted truck stop has been investigated by a number of paranormal research groups and has been featured on several ghost hunting television shows. Phenomena ranging from self-moving objects to strange sounds to full-body apparitions (and even a “blood monster”) have been reported.
