Great news for uninsured adults in the USA who want a COVID-19 booster! It now appears that ALL CVS locations are now active participants in the Bridge Access Program. The Bridge Access Program gives out free Covid-19 vaccinations to 18+ adults who otherwise can't afford one, so if you have a CVS near you, please go get one! For others who don't have a CVS near them, please go to vaccines.gov, click on "Find Covid-19 vaccines", fill out which vaccines you prefer (you can mix different vaccines if you have to so i reccomend just marking all of them for the age groups you need), and when the next page loads mark the "Bridge Access Program Participant" option to see only locations that are Bridge Access Program participants. Hopefully, other places that aren't CVS will start participating soon, so just check back every so often to see if there are any updates. The CDC Bridge Access Program website also has more details on what locations will be participating, but only CVS is appearing as an active participant on the vaccines.gov location finder at the moment.

We’re still asking people with COVID to jump through far too many hoops to get their hands on Pfizer Inc.’s Paxlovid.

I experienced the barriers first-hand this month after my mother texted to say that this summer’s COVID wave had finally caught up with her. My first thought was to make sure she quickly started taking the antiviral. You’d think she would be an ideal candidate, because she is in her 70s with an underlying health condition. But it took a daylong effort to get her the medicine, one that involved multiple emails, phone calls with three different doctor’s offices, a telehealth visit and a bit of pharmacy-hopping to find one that had the pills in stock.

“That’s not an uncommon story,” says Amesh Adalja, a senior scholar at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security. “There are a lot of misconceptions out there that have undermined the use [of antivirals] from the very beginning.”

The data bear this out. One small study published in early 2024 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that 4 out of 5 high-risk patients were not offered an antiviral by their doctors. Worse, one large, community-based study found that Black and Latino patients were far less likely to receive the drug than White patients.

It shouldn’t be that way. And the delay matters: Pfizer’s antiviral only helps if taken within the first five days of symptoms. My mom, feverish and exhausted, told me that if I hadn’t stepped in as her advocate, she would have given up.

Doctors must do better, especially as we continue to live through a wave of infections.

Some health care providers may be worried about managing the interactions between Paxlovid and other medicines (my mom, for example, had to pause her Lipitor while on the antiviral). Others have been dissuaded by reports of rebound infections occurring in people who take Paxlovid — despite evidence that the drug’s benefits outweigh those risks in the most vulnerable patients. And some doctors might be operating under perverse incentives that make it more lucrative to have a sick patient make an appointment to confirm their infection instead of simply calling the prescription into a pharmacy after an at-home test.

There’s also lingering confusion about the right candidates for the drug. Paxlovid was authorized in 2021 based on compelling data showing it could keep high-risk unvaccinated people out of the hospital. Yet some doctors don’t seem aware that vaccinated patients can also benefit from it, particularly if they are higher risk. That’s everyone over age 65, or those who are immunocompromised, pregnant or with an underlying condition. Those groups still are at risk of hospitalization and even of dying, especially if their last exposure or booster is in the distant past.

And that’s a lot of people. Only 1 out of every 3 retirement-age adults got last year’s booster. “From my experience as well as others, pretty much everybody I’ve taken care of hasn’t received a vaccine in the last year or so, even though they might have had them originally,” says Peter Chin-Hong, an infectious disease specialist at the University of California, San Francisco. Since mid-August, COVID deaths in the U.S. have been hovering near 1,000 per week, according to CDC data. Shouldn’t we better deploy the tools that might prevent such losses?

Cost shouldn’t be a barrier. When antivirals transitioned to the commercial market last year, the U.S. government partnered with Pfizer to ensure people with public health insurance or without insurance could still get the drugs for free, and minimize the cost for people with private insurance. Yet infectious disease doctors tell me that months into the rollout, too few patients, prescribers and pharmacists seem aware of the program.

True, Paxlovid isn’t perfect. In people who aren’t high-risk, the data are mixed as to whether it helps much (though anecdotes abound for people who say they have felt better faster after taking it). And while there had been much hope that Paxlovid could prevent long COVID, so far the data supporting that hypothesis are inconclusive.

So there’s a clear need for better anti-COVID drugs. Even for young, healthy people who have been jabbed and infected multiple times, an infection can be extremely disruptive, sidelining us from work or school and ruining our best-laid plans. A drug more akin to Tamiflu — a very safe and tolerable treatment for the flu that allows people to bounce back faster, even if only by a day or two — would be a welcome invention.

Yet better antivirals have been slow to arrive. Pfizer is studying a treatment that works similarly to Paxlovid, but doesn’t interact with other medications. And hopes were dashed last spring when Shionogi’s Ensitrelvir, an antiviral approved in Japan, failed to prove it could alleviate symptoms faster than a placebo.

But even if a drug for the masses eventually made it to market, would it be used? When doctors can’t get it right for the most vulnerable, the prospects seem dim.

At least I managed to tell co-worker today convincingly that no vaccines ever, and certainly not covid-vax, will cause infertility in children.

Not that it convinced them to take their boosters, but whatever. 

It’s really difficult to combat against bullshit on a casual conversation, cos obviously if someone says that they read directly from Pfizer that will infertilize children it’s like near impossible to be like, you probably read that from a hear-say-source, based on some fake news that rolled in the undercurrent of social media before surfacing with no traceable sources. In this case I just happened to be prepared, cos the same argument has been used so much against HPV-vaccine and they just happen to be ok with HPV-vaccine and thus were easier to convince the argument is just recycled old conspiracy theory.

I just said that I am happy to take as fucking many boosters they want me to take, whatever man, none of the 3 shots I’ve got had any side effects on me. Why wouldn’t I, when it literally makes no difference in my life and could maybe save yours.

The first issue of Library Excavations since COVID-19 began that was made through in-person visits to a library! This one was started before the pandemic and it took over a year and a couple shots of the Pfizer vaccine to finish it.

This issue of Library Excavations draws on details of photos from 1980s issues of the food industry periodicals Institutions, Restaurants & Institutions, Quick Frozen Foods, and Restaurant Management. It was inspired in part by Erving Goffman’s book Gender Advertisements about advertising and gender stereotyping. For my part, I added examples of sexual innuendo, racial stereotyping, and capitalist surrealism, all of which were common in 1980s ads.

I started this issue back in January 2020 by scanning reference magazines at Harold Washington Library in Chicago. Then COVID-19 happened and everything shut down. I didn’t have enough material for a publication and the booklet no longer made sense to me.

By April  2021 I was vaccinated so I went back to Harold Washington to resume my project. It felt so good to see the librarians and staff again. COVID-19 has changed libraries, and I’m grateful to all of the workers that have kept these spaces open, often at considerable personal cost.

In the year+ since I started this issue, the food industry has been fully transformed by the pandemic. Nearly 200 Chicago restaurants have closed forever, including many near the library. Restaurants constructed strange new outdoor, semi-enclosed eating spaces. Our entire relationship to indoor dining has changed. When I took a fresh look at the material I collected, these images resonated for me in new ways. Right now, however, I still prefer to dine at home. — Marc Fischer

I’m glad you came to talk! I’m going to explain in non complicated terms how you have nothing to worry about.

What happens in the body?

So in our cells we have these neat little machines that you put in a recipe in one side and different types of protein come on the other! Proteins are very important and do a bunch of things on the body like helping transport oxygen in the blood and fix muscles when they are sore. One of the things proteins do is fight off intruders in the body. They look at this little annoying thing hurting the body and then try to find a recipe to produce proteins that know how to kill the intruder. But they only have a limited amount of recipes right? So they can try to use the ones they have. If you are super super healthy and young and lucky your machines may be able to eventually kill the thing. But it will take a little time (they don’t know what to do!) and your body will suffer the consequences of that intruder reproducing (they make babies very fast). Maybe you are not that lucky and your machines are a little slow so the intruders spread everywhere and hurt everything they can. That’s when you die.

mRNA vaccines (Pfizer and Moderna)

these incredible vaccines just introduce the right recipe for your machines to learn how to produce soldiers to fight covid 19. That’s it. They say “hey instead of you running around trying to figure it out, here it is”. So you feel a little yucky the day after because your body is testing the recipe, gotta make sure it runs through the machine smoothly, but the rest of the body is a bit confused. Our we sick? Why are we producing soldiers? So you feel yucky. Pretty soon the machines go “okay it works lets store it in the back for when we need to use it”.

That’s why people say you can catch it when you are vaccinated. Sure it comes in. But the machines are ready, they have the perfect recipe for badass soldiers, so they fight it off and you don’t feel that bad. Just the bad of having a little battle happening, nothing to worry about.

So this is what we call the “mechanism” of the vaccine. It’s JUST a recipe getting put in your arm. There is no way to affect fertility because it has nothing to do with that. In fact, the hormones that affect fertility are also originally recipes that pass through the same machines. But hormones are not fighters. They are not the in the same clique and don’t know each other. They just use the same types of machines (as do many many many other things in the body).

Traditional Vaccines (AstraZeneca, J&J…)

The intruders have these little swords they use to cut into your cells. They can’t just knock on the door, they have to fight their way in. What traditional vaccines (which means allll that you have taken so far) do is put a bunch of dead intruders still holding their swords. The body is like hold up what is this and puts everyone to work to figure out how to fight these guys. The body realizes that without the sword, the intruders are pretty useless. So the body says “ha! I’ll just take your swords lol”. Since the intruders were dead to begin with you don’t get sick and the body learned a lesson: “if we see those guys again, don’t bother trying to fight them. Just take their swords”. So if you do get in contact with covid 19 your body is ready, has a battle plan and will stop the intruders from hurting you. Without their swords they die cause they are dramatic. Again absolutely no connection to fertility.

The truth of vaccines is this: the worst thing they can do is not work. They are not going to hurt you. When you see the very very few cases where something happens you have to remember that in life any weird thing can happen. You could choke on your bread in the morning and die. Is it very rare that that would happen? Yes. Therefore, you keep eating your bread because it is so unlikely that it would be silly not to. Even then NONE of the minuscule number of issues have had to do with fertility. It’s like of course there is a risk of choking on bread but that will hurt your airways, lungs and eventually your heart. But your uterus will be perfectly fine the whole time. And you know that because it’s silly to think anything would happen there, there is no connection. Same thing with the vaccines.

I hope this helps you understand what is behind the scenes. Of course this is an illustration so I recommend reading a scientific explanation with the proper names. The processes are obviously way more complex than my little story.

Get vaccinated. Every rich powerful person with all the information in the world has done so because they know it is safe.

This is very long and broken up into five parts, my apologies for the lengthy read.

Pt. 1: My brother is extremely disabled, and has a compromised immune system, he’s actually in the PICU rn with a collapsed lung. The lead PICU doctor knows my parents very well, as she has saved my brother’s life before. Before being life-flighted to this particular hospital my parents have been against getting the vaccine-mostly. Due to the increased number of cases (my dad is an emergency responder so he knows when there are confirmed cases that go over the radio), they’ve been becoming more afraid again, especially since my brother got sick.

Pt. 2: However, before my dad left to be at the hospital with my mom and brother, he informs me that this doctor told my mom that they need to get the vaccine, or my brother will die. And it has to be the Pfizer one. So, my dad and I start talking about some of the things we have read. Now, tbh, I have not been online for quite a while so I’m not entirely sure what has been proven and disproven. Such, as some people dying due to the vaccines, the disabilities, the corruption of the companies -mostly how the CEO hasn’t gotten it and the co-CEO or whatever being let go or something, as well as the rumors of people being sterile. Now as I said it’s been awhile so I’m unsure how much of that is still true. My dad said he would ask her (the doc) about all of this, well not the disabilities, I forgot about that and he too.

Pt. 3: He leaves and everything is good. He got back last night -he can only spend weekends because he just started a new job and we can’t afford to not have him be at work and this hospital is 6 hours away- and said how he talked with the doctor. She told him the same thing, “get the vaccine or he’ll die, he won’t survive this.” And when presented with all of the questions she said it was “bullshit.” Now, I’m not sure if she really said that or if my dad was just tired and trying to shorten it. She said it’s all politics, which is true. How when Trump was the main endorsement then people were adamant that they weren’t going to get it, but now that it’s Biden and Harris and people don’t trust them. And how it’s all based off of SARS, that’s where the research came from and because “everyone came together, they didn’t try to hide the formulas from one another” it can be trusted or whatever. She said the guy who came out with the sterilization thing is a “moron” and that he CEO does actually have it. But mostly it was all “bullshit.”

Pt. 4: And, so because they trust this woman and because she’s survived cancer and she got it. They were convinced that they need to get it. I said “no, I’m not getting it.” And my dad told me that either I get it or I won’t be allowed near my brother anymore. Because of that we had a fight. I have two other siblings an older sister who is also against getting the vaccine and she has thyroid issues, and another younger brother -he’s not a kid though- but he has something called Marfan’s and if you don’t know what it is- it’s a connective tissue disorder and it affects his heart, a lot. He’s moved away though and it doesn’t seem like he’s gonna come back at any time, but I’m afraid of what will happen if they convince him to get the vaccine. I don’t think my parents are stupid enough to get my youngest brother vaccinated, but now I’m not very sure of anything. All of the side effects and rumors I don’t know what’s real and fake anymore and so incredibly confused and conflicted.

Pt. 5: Before this whole ordeal, we didn’t even wear masks or social distance, any of that crap. None of has gotten covid yet. But that one lady managed to manipulate them because of her status and what she’s done for him before. My parents aren’t old or at risk, they’re in their early forties and healthy but because everyone is affected differently they’re scared and it’s my brother they’re worried about. They haven’t made mention of this to the other two siblings, but I called my sister last night in tears and she said she didn’t know what to think. We haven’t told our other brother yet. I talked to my mom this morning and she never said anything. My dad last night apologized and said he “didn’t mean to make me upset” (which I don’t what he thought he was doing when giving me an ultimatum like that), and sounded near tears too. But haven’t talked to him since. I’m sorry that this is so long and if some of it doesn’t make since. Like I said I’m just conflicted and confused. It was one hell of a 21st birthday present though :/

Anon, I am so beyond sorry that you're going through all of this. I wish I had an easy answer for you, but there's so much going on here that I really can't offer any advice beyond do what you think is right. It sounds a lot like your parents are very scared and like a lot of people they're putting their trust in an authority they trust because of that fear. I can't say if they're right or wrong about getting the vaccine, but I do know they're wrong for threatening to ban you from seeing your brother if you don't get vaxxed. Vaxxed people carry and transmit the virus just as easily as unvaxxed. The vaccine isn't even a vaccine, it just lessens your chances of experiencing symptoms. So your brother is the only one who "needs" to be vaxxed in order to protect him from having covid symptoms. At least, that's what I understand from what I've read. But like I said, that's not meant as advice. I really don't know what you should do. If I was in your position, though, as someone who got the (moderna) shot because my husband asked me to and because my parents are in the highest risk group and have had health problems the past few years, I would probably get the shot in this specific case. I would not get any boosters or yearly shots afterward, though. But that's just me. You need to figure out what's right for you, and I don't envy what you're going through. Even if you're not going to get it, though, I would highly recommend not ghosting the rest of your family. If they aren't cutting you out completely, don't be the one who makes this argument turn into an irreparable rift. I guess that would be my only advice.
