Étant un grand fan de 2001 de Stanley Kubrick je me suis longtemps refusé de voir sa suite 2010 de Peter Hyams Car elle est forcément inutile. J’ai eu tort ! Tiré d’un roman de Arthur C Clarke, la trame tourne autour d’un équipage international composé de Russes et d’Américains qui sont envoyés dans l’espace pour tenter de découvrir pourquoi la précédente mission a-t-elle échoué. Un canevas classique mais qui fonctionne toujours… et bien contre toute attente j’ai aimé ! Peter Hyams a bien évidemment conscience qu’il n’arriverait jamais à égaler le précédent film et il ne l’essaye même pas. Cette fois-ci nous sommes dans de la SF classique qui lorgne surtout vers l’action et le suspense. Des ingrédients que le cinéaste maîtrise parfaitement. La tension est constante et le film distille ici et là des morceaux de bravoure qui font plaisir à voir. Les acteurs comme l’Iconique Roy Sheider sont impeccables. La guerre froide toujours d’ actualité en 2010 est intéressante à suivre et a pour conséquence de diviser l’équipage. Il y a tout de même quelques bémols à mettre en avant. Si vous pensiez en regardant ce film que le scénario allait vous expliquer le côté métaphysique du précédent film… Il en est rien ! Autre aspect négatif plus étonnant ce sont les effets spéciaux qui recherchent plus à vous proposer des séquences spectaculaires au détriment de l’aspect réaliste de 2001. Cela a pour conséquence que les trucages de ce long-métrage semblent avoir plus vieillis que les effets intemporels du précédent mise En Scène 15 ans auparavant… la honte ! Malgré ses lacunes relatifs j’ai pris un réel plaisir à regarder ce film qui ne pète jamais plus haut que son cul et respecte son héritage. Outland (1981)

I gave Outland as much of a chance as I could, to no avail. This movie is boring. I could barely keep my eyes open while it played, and this was at 20:30!

In the future, a mining outpost has been set up on Jupiter’s moon Io. Several incidents while mining titanium have called into question the safety and security of the facility. When federal marshal William O’Niel (Sean Connery) uncovers corruption, those in charge warn him not to speak up.

My biggest disappointment comes from the science fiction setting, which is wasted by the film. I’m not saying the miners needed to uncover the Monolith from 2010: The Year we Make Contact but there’s no reason for this picture to be set in deep space. It just raises your expectations that something exciting will happen.

Even if you get over this letdown, there's little to keep you invested in the story. The few action scenes are contrived and inserted only to jog the audience awake. When O’Niel discovers what's been causing the unsettling accidents on Io, he rushes down and tries to grab the guy responsible as he’s walking through crowded corridors that will slow the marshall down while providing his prey his dozens of escape routes. Why? You have the evidence on camera. Just wait until the culprit goes back to his living quarters and arrest him there. It’s not like he'll be able to jump out of a window when he hears you knocking – there’s no air outside!

I had problems with Outland from the very start when O’Niel’s wife (Kika Markham) suddenly leaves with their son for Earth. Not because of all the scary stuff happening on Io, because she doesn't feel they can raise the boy properly unless he's on the homeworld. Maybe you should've thought of that BEFORE hoping on the rocket. It's a nitpick but in a movie as unstimulating as this one, it stood out to me.

After Outland ended, I was genuinely concerned. I wondered if I was sick or something. How could I feel so exhausted? I thought I’d take a chance and see if I could make it through another movie. Not only was I able to, it jolted me awake and I didn't crave my bed at all once it was done. The culprit wasn't some virus, it was Outland.

No amount of explosive decompression could overcome the contrived plot of Outland. It’s a world where people have travelled as far as Jupiter but emails or video messages through space is impossible. I could see this story working in theory (I’ve heard people call it a location-swapped remake of High Noon, which is set in the old west) but it didn't this time. (On VHS, March 3, 2016)

Parfois dénigré par une certaine cinéphile, Peter Hyams (LA NUIT DÉS JUGES,CAPRICORNE ONE) est un cinéaste doué que je considère parmi les meilleurs artisans du septième art de cette époque. Un artisan qui sait écrire un scénario solide et le mettre en scène avec une réelle virtuosité. OUTLAND (1981) est pour moi un excellent exemple de sa maestria. Très inspiré par le célébrissime TRAIN SIFFLERA 3 FOIS , l’action se déroule dans un futur lointain sur une station lunaire de Jupiter où un Marshall enquête sur des incidents de plus en plus inquiétants. Le scénario écrit par le metteur en scène en personne est un western qui se déroule dans l’espace. C’est aussi un pur film d’action hard Boiled qui n’hésite pas à intégrer des scènes de violence graphiques assez étonnantes pour ce style de production budgétée à 16 millions de dollars. La mise en scène est très moderne et la caméra n’arrête pas de se mouvoir pour proposer des mini plans séquences d’une très grande efficacité. Pour la première fois on a utilisé la technique de l’IntroVision qui consiste à intégrer dans un même plan des décors et des maquettes à tailles réelles tout en gommant les limitations. On incruste par la suite les acteurs dans les décors. Cela donne un cachet très réaliste au film. Les acteurs (Sean Connery, Peter Boyle, Frances Sternhagen) sont parfaits. Watching the wonderful 2010 for the first time in a while. This sequel to Kubrick's 2001 was written and Directed by Peter Hyams and released in 1984. It was ignored. A real shame as there is much to like. It's very different in tone, more realistic and less ambiguous. However, it's a solid piece of grown up sci-fi with some wonderful performances from Roy Scheider, Bob Balaban, Hellen Mirren, John Lithgow and Elya Baskin. There are also some impressive designs from Syd Mead, the man behind designs for Alien, Blade Runner, Tron and Star Trek The Motion Picture.
