A Broadway dancer stages a male revue in order to save her parents' small-town performing venue in time for Christmas. Maybe she'll even meet the right guy with all the right moves.

The Merry Gentlemen stars Britt Robertson, Chad Michael Murray, Marla Sokoloff, Beth Broderick, Michael Gross, Maxwell Caulfield, Hector David Jr., Colt Prattes, and Marc Anthony Samuel. The film is directed by Peter Sullivan from a screenplay by Sokoloff.

The Merry Gentlemen hits Netflix on November 20, 2024.

Glory (1989). Robert Gould Shaw leads the U.S. Civil War's first all-black volunteer company, fighting prejudices from both his own Union Army, and the Confederates.

There is something almost comically egregious about having Matthew Broderick acting as lead opposite Denzel Washington, Morgan Freeman and Andre Braugher's supporting roles in this Civil War drama, especially given the calibre of Denzel's performance in particular. Just top knotch work from him. Otherwise, I don't know. It's a Civil War movie? I can appreciate that it means a lot to people, given its focus on one of the first all Black batallions, but it still feels pretty racist in that specific late-80s way and just soaked in machismo that feels under explored. Just not for me, this one, I think. 6/10.

248 - Mrs. Parker and the Vicious Circle

We are returning to the work of Jennifer Jason Leigh this week, and Jourdain Searles is joining us once again with an underrated and underseen gem. Mrs. Parker and the Vicious Circle takes on the life of indelible writer Dorothy Parker, capturing her days with the insular Algonquin Circle and her later dissolution with the group, all with Jennifer Jason Leigh as the noted wit. Launched at Cannes, the film was celebrated for her performance even with a limited audience, including Golden Globe and Independent Spirit nominations for Best Actress. But even in a famously uncompetitive Best Actress lineup, Leigh was left out.

This episode, we talk about Leigh's several close calls for a nomination in the 1990s and our feelings about the nomination that she eventually received for The Hateful Eight. We also talk about Pulp Fiction's domination on the independent film scene, the Cannes Film Festival, and the influence of producer Robert Altman.

Topics also include writer/director Alan Rudolph's filmography, the film's massive (and nepotism baby-inflected) ensemble, and the person-not-company Condé Nast.
