I'm fixing to lose sleep over pondering what America would look like right now if the past 50+ years of procedural crime dramas had taken their cues more from Adam-12 (which follows two imperfect LAPD officers upholding the law and clearly more interested in helping victims than arresting bad guys) and fewer cues from Hawaii Five-0 (which follows a taskforce of people given full immunity and means to catch the bad guys no matter the cost).
The sheer number of people who joined the police force because they were inspired by the integrity of Pete and Jim vs the number of people who have since been inspired to join law enforcement based on the potential accolades, heroic autonomy, and cowboy power presented in the majority of crime dramas produced since. Stories are powerful, and sometimes I just think we follow the wrong narratives.
#i'm having....thoughts#mals bless you for introducing me to this gem#ragamusings#adam 12#a few wince-worthy 'ah the 60s' moments aside/included#this is now high on my list of favorite shows#but i just can't get over the difference and what we could have had instead#the power of storytelling#hhhhhhhh#also the grammar in this post is obscene don't look at me#adam-12#pete malloy#jim reed#martin milner#kent mccord

“ i’m not going anywhere. not as long as you’re in danger. ” (Jean or Pete to Reed)
@iloveitxwhenaplanxcomestogether
Reed takes a deep breath, looking toward Pete worriedly before rubbing at the back of his neck. “I can’t ask you to put your life on hold, Pete. I’m not the first cop to get a target on his back, and I won’t be the last.” Reed pauses, hand dropping back down to fiddle with his watch band. He is far more nervous and worried then he cares to admit openly. “I sent Jeanie and Jimmy to go stay with her mother… they’ll be safe there until all of this mess blows over.” Flexing his hands slowly, Reed tries to pull up his usual easy-going smile. “Jeanie was right, you know. She said I shouldn’t let Vice poach me any more… that it would only cause trouble. Well…” he gestures wildly, as if encompassing the entire situation. “The thing about wives is that they usually do get to say ‘I told you so’.” Now Reed is not regretting the choices that brought him here. Someone had to do something about that pimp preying on teenage girls trying to enjoy their summer vacations. Of course, that pimp happens to have some very big friends… possibly even a few on the LAPD… and Reed suddenly finds himself with a target on his back. Seeming to sense that Pete means every syllable he said, Reed makes no more effort to send his friend and partner away. Instead he sighs, “You want to come in and have a cup of coffee, Pete?”

I originally reblogged this as the mood post it is intended, but I would also like to point out that this particular scene is the culmination of a tense standoff between Pete (pictured), who ran into a house on a call, and an aggravated and armed assailant holding a baby hostage. Pete stands there and tries at first to calm the guy down and get on his side and sweet talk him into giving up the baby safely. When that doesn't work and the assailant begins to escalate, Pete (employing what I like to call his spidey senses, and taking an uncharacteristic risk) abruptly switches tactics and outright antagonizes the man, yelling at and berating him until all the fire goes out of the villain and he ends up surrendering bc he breaks down under Pete's tirade. The baby is safe, the bad guy arrested, and Pete (who is generally a very calm, warm, controlled guy) collapses on the house couch, revealing how much the encounter (and the consideration of its other outcomes) took out of him.
I love Pete Malloy so much.
*facepalm*

I have discovered a thing I wish to see proven or disproven. See if you can help:
Hypothesis: I love all crime-fighting Peters. I adore them. They are inevitably my dearest favorite I will protect at all costs.
Examples:
Peter Burke - White Collar (one of my favorite fictional characters to ever exist, I can write essays)
Peter Bishop - Fringe (I still need to watch the last season or two but I know it will break my heart regardless of what happens but anyway, save him)
Peter Dunlop - Body of Proof (arguably a meh show but also Peter was Megan Hunt's actual heart and the ultimate and outrageous mistreatment of his character ruined the show, I have receipts, but also #donttalktomeaboutit)
Pete(r) Malloy - Adam 12 (this show is from the 60s-70s and it has some rough patches but also my current comfort show and it holds up remarkably well and anyways Pete is possibly the absolute best and most honorable fictional police officer ever and more cop shows should take notes)
Peter Parker - Spiderman/Various (friendly neighborhood crime fighter need I say more)
I need to know if there are undesirable crime-fighting Peters out there or if you are a character named Peter and your occupation is fighting crime you automatically throw your whole heart into it and are the most Good Man Hero Trope ever.
Also if there are more crime-fighting Peters I should know about, please hmu so I can cry over them too k thanks bye
#ragamusings#tropes#peter burke#peter bishop#peter dunlop#pete malloy#peter parker#(gonna get flack from the spidey community for that last tag but i'm a tumblr grandma and i don't care)
