Newsflash, David doesn’t like his birthday, this is a shock to no one.

He gets too stressed about how he’s suppose to react to gifts, getting worried people are wasting money on him, does he have to plan something?, is Asher going to throw him a surprise party?, he hates surprises (also he hates not having his dad with him on his birthday).

Anyways.

Angel is so used to this they have to plan months in advance, change David’s calendar so that on his birthday he doesn’t even know it’s his birthday. They get him out of the house to let Asher decorate the place. He does throw a surprise party. David hates surprises. Or so he says. They all catch him smiling at the pack’s shenanigans - even if he doesn’t admit it.

He likes to let Angel and Asher believe he doesn’t know their plans, but it’s David, he’s aware of their menace behaviours. Yet he allows it anyway. Because he’s a softie deep down.

Lasko

He forgets it’s even his birthday. Genuinely.

Damien and Huxley get him a joint present - a journal with handmade paper and a hand carved woodwork cover and back. Damien made the paper and Huxley did the carvings. The carvings have one line of text: ‘Our Lasko’ and then his symbol below it. (Can be seen as polydamn or just a reminder of family).

Freelancer got him a Lasko brand fan.

Gavin, surprisingly- did not get him a gift. He bought a ring, and gave it to Dear. A ‘future investment’ is what he called it. — Although he did write the group card in his fancy calligraphy.

Doesn’t celebrate his birthday. Although every new years he watches the fireworks and thinks of his mother. He thinks about his childhood - thinks about his death.

ok I am gonna start rattling off statement ideas I had written down bc I need to get them out of me

- A Stranger statement, lady gets plastic surgery only to be given a completely different face entirely. Her own friends even start calling her a different name and saying she lived a completely different life

- Can be seen as either Spiral or Stranger, person was a cake artist that was gifted a strange set of edible paint and brushes. Slowly, everything around them becomes cake and they become more and more paranoid until they kill their boyfriend. Idk it was more of a joke idea

- Corruption statement, lady is pregnant with some type of insect thing and shows obsession for it, even when it stays in her body much longer than it should. Follow-up documents reveal it was a twelve-foot tall centipede.

- End statement, guy owns a bunch of clocks with the name of his friends written on them. The clocks are broken until the year they are going to die, when they start ticking. When they chime, the person dies.

- End(?) statement, more typically spooky one of a body still being alive during an autopsy and it tormenting the coroner afterwards.

- An End artifact, a birthday card that has the exact amount of time someone has left to live written on the inside and constantly shows up in the person’s life to keep reminding them.

- An Eye statement, person watches a TV channel that has ads that get increasingly more personalised as the night progressed. It progresses more, becoming ads on YouTube videos accusing them of things they’ve done and even shows up in anything they overheard. Any and all conversation they hear seem to be tied to their life in some form.

What do the bad kids get each other on birthdays

Adaine all ways gets people some variation of baked good enchanted to not go stale since it’s all ways a truly unreasonable amount.

Riz is a bit of a wild card but whatever it is it’s always extremely personalised and a great gift.

Gorgug will get them something home made akin to the tin flower he gave Fabian but with a slight bit more artificer work added to it

Kristen is like Riz in the fact she’s a wildcard however the gift if truly random one year it was a bunch of tie dye the next it was a gym membership so they could work out together. The rest of the kids and even parents have a bet before a birthday to see who can get the closest to what it is.

Fabian always goes all out on gifts he’s rich and he enjoys spending it on his friends. It often a bunch of small trinkets or a couple really expensive items like a new fancy drum set for Gorgug one year.

Fig try’s and often succeeds to write a song in the person’s favourite genre and it’s always a hit (she has like +20 in performance or something)

Adaine is great at baking and loves sharing the things she makes with he friends. She's the one that bakes and decorates their birthday cakes and they're always amazing. All of the bad kids have a favorite kind, but all of them enjoy her cheesecakes the most. As for their actual gifts, its usually something that is small enough to snack on over multiple days like cookies or mini muffins. Fabian insists she is trying to ruin his figure.

Riz is the kind of person who will notice you looking at something in a store a little too long and will make a note of it. He has lists of things he could get people for their birthdays. Narrowing it down is always the hard part, and making sure that no one else has purchased it for them, or that they dont already have it themselves. A good chunk of his money from his detective work goes towards his friends and family in this way. People are usually a bit confused as to how he knew they wanted the gift, but then they remember his perception is through the roof.

Gorgugs gifts are beautiful and hand made, like little jewelery boxes or bags or hairpins. They're all very thoughtful and he's careful to test them before giving them to anyone in case the artificer tweaks he made to them malfunction.

Kristen sees something she thinks someone will like and buys it without a second thought (she has a 100% hit accuracy on this). She's usually the person who's panic buying the gift the morning of though, because she totally forgets the dates. If she's given a couple days heads up though the gifts are usually pretty thoughtful if not a bit random.

Fabian is amazing at buying people gifts. They're often very personalised, thoughtful and money is not an issue. He doesnt like handing them directly to people though, and will usually leave them where he knows the person will find them later when he's not in the room (he does at least sign the attached card these days though, after his first gift to his friends made him seem like a weird stalker).

Figs songs are always a huge hit with her friends, and they've come to expect them now. Riz cannot handle the attention though and will usually be hidden nearby to listen to the first performance on his birthdays rather than standing where people can see him.

I have been putting off writing in my niblings' birthday cards for three months. Their birthdays had come and gone and the cards were still sitting on my coffee table, waiting for me to scribble some generic "happy birthday" message in them.

My life fell apart when my dad was hospitalised in June, and it's taken me until now to feel normal again. I started therapy again, and I hate it, but I have to admit it helps. I just...struggle, so badly, with the executive function required for things like this. And the longer I went without writing in those cards and sending them, the more I felt like a bad aunt.

Tonight, I wrote in them. All of them. I managed to personalise each message to each kid - complimenting their skills, their hobbies, the growth they've taken to reach where they are. Three of them are going to my brother's house, one to my sister's.

I am going to have to send a text to my siblings with my sincerest apologies and maybe explain myself a little, but...it's done. I did it.

the two of you are basically the neighbourhood’s bonus parents and the others tend to come to you looking for advice from their extra-mum and extra-(preferred title)

this running joke has resulted in the two of you getting matching mugs — hand painted by your neighbours (all of them, based on how eclectic their decorations are) — with ‘#1 bonus mum/dad/parent’ written on them

poppy’s quite substantial in size so your sleep arrangement usually consists of her curling up comfortably on the bed and you sleeping on her body (she’s very soft!)

she also knits you things like scarves and hats and mittens because she worries about your featherless body getting too cold

she has the flowers you have her on your first date pressed and preserved in a picture frame in the living room

she’s very sentimental (see above) and also keeps every single photo you take and letter you write

she has impeccable handwriting and usually writes any joint-cards for your neighbours (it didn’t start out that way, but you both liked the aesthetic of her writing so it just kinda… happened!)

she has a habit of saying things remind her of you rather than saying that she loves them

like if she samples a dish and it’s the most hearty, delicious thing she’s tasted — you come to mind and she’ll save you a serving or two

flowers in bloom and sunrises/sunsets are also perfect candidates for this comparison

so are sugary/sweet desserts and perfectly painted pictures

e.g. she’ll say to wally that his latest painting is ‘very (name)!’ and he knows that she loves how it looks

very unintentionally romantic — but you and the neighbours find it adorable

if you wear your hair in a specific style (be it protective, like braids, or aesthetic like a beehive), she’ll learn how to do it so she can help you out — she’s more dextrous with her wings than many people would assume

she loves scented candles — specifically ones that smell like food items like vanilla or gingerbread — and she has like so many

she doesn’t even light them she just keeps them around to open and smell — and if you add to her collection on anniversaries or birthdays then she’ll be so very thrilled

Daffodil = what's the most thoughtful present you've ever received?

I'm lucky in that I have some absolutely amazing friends, so it's really hard to choose which thing to single out. But I think it'd have to be the card a friend gave me for my 19th birthday. She'd gone out of her way to craft it herself – it was gorgeous, with these really lovely illustrations on the front, and a ribbon lining. The paper (parchment?) it was made on was absolutely beautiful. Inside, my friend had taken the time to write out 19 things she liked about me – and they were all really personalised, with the reasoning laid out in detail. It must have taken her hours. It was the most incredibly thoughtful and generous thing I've possibly ever received. (She'd also given a gift with the card, though the card alone would have been more than enough. The gift was a necklace her grandmother had made, to give as a token of friendship. I can't— oh my god—). I cannot emphasise what a kind, sunny, and gorgeous friend she is. She's the best.

That said, a couple of other amazing gifts I'd like to highlight are: the notebook Reacon brought back from Germany, filled with blank spaces he's structured for planning out a story, and pages to write it (we're both writers, and beta-read each other's stuff); the wonderful selection of tea that @0rchidrose has given me over the past couple of years (it's always delicious, and it's enough to sustain me for ages); the information and support that @a-suspicious-lack-of-bagel sends through on the regular (she's really thoughtful and inevitably super supportive); the constant support NCS friends (hey @srijellyfishtempura that's you) showed me when I was struggling in January, even when those friends were facing their own issues (especially grateful to the lady who brought my hydralyte and to the friends who talked mental health with me); and the scarf a former friend brought back from her travels to China. That scarf is still in my violin case, protecting my violin.

The best gifts are the ones that are personalised – and if I've mentioned @–ed anyone in this post, it's because they've given so much of themself, and put so much thought into things. Good friends – ones who care this much, and who're there as much as they can be – are the best gifts of all.

25: what’s the best personal gift someone could give you (playlist, homemade card, etc.)

Honestly, something personal and/or homemade. I'm a big gift giver and I always either handmake the gifts I give or get something as personalised as possible. I really devote myself to making/giving gifts but I uh... kinda wish people could return that piece of sincerity and effort to me too. (I don't really... get gifts. I want to but uh... yeah. Nobody really gives me stuff. Not even for my birthday or Christmas. :( )
