Stars of the Roller State Disco (BBC, 1984)
"Yes?"
"I'm Desmond."
"Yes, Desmond?"
"And I am Charles."
"Yes, Charles?"
"I was the youngest in my year. Languages. I could read French before I could whistle. I have a lot of Mallarmé by heart."
"Um, my degree is in technical engineering."
"How can I help you boys?"
"Exactly."

Mum and Dad: Keeping Horror in the Family
Mum and Dad is all about keeping horror in the family. It is also about control and learning that you may not want to get too close to colleagues at work. Shot with an estimated budget of just £100,000 ($157,000) this film sets the goal posts for “shoe string budget” films.  First time director Steven Sheil also wrote the film, putting him in the illustrious company of peers like Shane…

Accident Man: Hitman’s Holiday (2022): Is This Vacation Worth Taking?
Accident Man originated as a series of comic strips published in 1990. In an interview with Viking Samurai, Scott Adkins talks about reading it when he was about 14 years old, loving it, and dreaming that someday it would be made into a movie. Well, with 2018’s Accident Man his dream blossomed into reality, and years later he got to live the dream again with Accident Man: Hitman’s Holiday, a…

The Last Heist (2022)
The Last Heist (2022)
Four thieves linked by honor meet up at the local pub where it all started after a job goes awry. However, beneath the laughter, a sinister secret exists that will put these four friends’ allegiance to the test and reveal whether or not there is honor among…

highlights from the VMAs last night, in no particular order:
taylor swift and post malone won something for fortnight (i don't remember what lol) and after taylor gave her part of the speech, she said "do you wanna say something austin?" (adorable) and then post malone took the mic and proceeded to be absolutely speechless for twenty to thirty seconds
cyndi lauper introduced sabrina carpenter by saying "you're about to hear this whole room say motherfucker"
megan thee stallion shouted out "all the hotties" and then said "and the haters i know y'all watching too"
sabrina kissed an alien for gay rights
lenny kravitz basically played a full on rock show in the middle of The Pop Music Awards. with instruments. and fire.
benson boone did two (2!) flips during his performance of Beautiful Things
i had never even heard of lisa before the VMAs and i am now in love with her
katy perry said the words "touch grass" in her acceptance speech for the video vanguard award
she also thanked the LGBTQ community for, among other things, showing her that "you can be kind and cunt"
and she shouted out warped tour. katy perry the woman that you are
chappell roan with so so so many swords
rauw alejandro's entrance involved pretending to blow up the VMAs. with explosives.
megan thee stallion, as an homage to britney, held a whole ass snake
full-on guitar solo during shawn mendes's performance. plus he sang a note so high you could hear blood vessels bursting in the audience
when shawn finished he dropped his guitar (NOT a highlight, the sound haunts me) to go hug his drummer because he hasn't performed in years
megan thee stallion had her face projected onto the mask of the big ass astronaut for the duration of the performance, just kinda looking around. this was both funny and mildly alarming
two people won awards for songs called "Houdini" (Eminem and Dua Lipa) which i personally found amusing
tyla won Best Afrobeats for her song Water and when she went to give her speech she made lil nas x (the presenter) hold the award because it was too heavy :')

I wanted to share some artists that I think really match up to my favorite Stranger Things ships
I did this a while ago, but looking back I definitely don't agree with a lot of the artists I chose, so I wanted to share my new pairings.
Byler- I think Conan Gray really encompasses the struggles of loving from afar and the pain that comes with queer, "unrequited" love. The entirety of his album, Found Heaven (which literally has an 80s synth pop vibe) screams byler, as well as other songs like Heather, Family Line, Summer Child, The Exit, The Cut That Always Bleeds, Fight Or Flight, Can We Be Friends?, Little League, Idle Town, and Crush Culture. I just think his music really represents Mike and Will's story-both the good and the bad.
Steddie- For them I have to say the Arctic Monkeys. I think they're music genre is a good mash up between Eddie's death metal and Steve's overall style (we're never really told what kind of music he likes, but I like to assume some sort of pop). I Wanna Be Yours, You Get Me So High, Do I Wanna Know, R U Mine, 505, and No. 1 Party Anthem all give me steddie vibes.
Ronance- girl in red is definitely so ronance. I wanna be your girlfriend, girls, You Stupid Bitch, hornylovesickmess, we fell in love in october, i'll die anyway., Too Much, and bad idea are great examples of songs that fit Nancy and Robin.
Lumax- I was having a hard time thinking of one for lumax, but Benson Boone honestly really fits them. He sings really passionate music, and I think one of the key parts of their dynamic is the fact that they'reboth very passionate, just in different ways. Max is fierce and fiery and Lucas is drawn to that flame, while also kindling it with his own loving personality and encouraging her, no matter what. I think Beautiful Things, Work Of Art, In the Stars, Cry, Ghost Town, and Slow it Down represent them well.
Elmax- Katy Perry gives me major elmax vibes, specifically One Of The Boys and Teenage Dream. They're both really fun, feminine, pop teen romance albums that feel like embodiments of El and Max during season 3. I Kissed A Girl, Teenage Dream, Part Of Me, Dark Horse, E.T, Firework, and The One That Got Away are the songs the remind me of them the most.
Rovickie- Chappell Roan is the first artist to come to mind when I think of Robin and Vickie. Good Luck, Babe! Literally feels like it was written from Robin POV, plus Casual, Picture You, Kaleidoscope, Red Wine Supernova, and Pink Pony Club are some other songs that I think fit the ship.

250 - Her Smell
Tumblr media
We've come up on another anniversary episode of This Had Oscar Buzz, and we've got another favorite that long-time listeners have heard us praise before: 2019's Her Smell. Debuting on at TIFF 2018, the Alex Ross Perry film is a daring and ambitious take on the riot grrrls of the early 1990s. Starring Elisabeth Moss as Becky Something, an addict egomaniac who brings her own downfall, the film audaciously immerses us in Becky's destruction (and later climb out of it) in ways that are exhausting and rewarding. Earning stratospheric praise for Moss by even the film's most frustrated viewers, the film was cursed to a microrelease and stayed an Oscar outsider despite vocal critical support.
This episode, we talk about the audacity of both Perry's film and Moss' performance. We also get into the depressing state of independent distribution, Perry's open comments regarding its release and support for Moss' performance, and the Gotham Awards.
Topics also include the film's fake album covers, our appreciation for difficult characters, and our superlatives for the past year of the podcast.
But perhaps most exciting is two bits of news right at the top: our new theme music by Taylor Cole and our newly launched Patreon!! Please consider subscribing and joining us for This Had Oscar Buzz: Turbulent Brilliance over at patreon.com/thishadoscarbuzz!!
