The taste of her lingers on my tongue, bitter and lovely. I bring my fingers to my nose, inhaling the smell of her, reliving glimpses of luxurious moments in bed as the sun taunted us, demanding we rise with the day. Tonight, I will return to be enveloped by her thighs and draw the curtains seamlessly together. We will not be interrupted again by daybreak.

This Month In History - April
There's quite a few pop culture landmark anniversaries this month:
April 4, 1984: Double Trouble premieres
youtube
In April 1984, one of my favorite short-lived 80s sitcoms premiered. Here is my piece I wrote in 2019. Happy 40th DT!
April 5, 1974: Foxy Brown opens
In April 1974, Jack Hill's follow-up to Coffy with star Pam Grier was released. Very few actors are as cool as Grier was in the 70s. This and many films Grier did in that era were known as "blaxploitation" movies, but Grier herself has pointed out in many interviews that to her it was about empowerment and showing a strong female hero who was sexy and kicking ass. As much as I liked Coffy, Foxy Brown is my favorite of that era. It's also a great one to watch with an audience. In 2016, I saw the movie at Harvard Film Archive and Grier came out to do a Q&A afterwards. Sadly she didn't stay long enough to sign my poster. Happy 50th Foxy Brown!
April 9, 1999: Go opens
In April 1999 one of Doug Liman's best movies opened. Here is my piece I wrote in 2014. Happy 25th Go!
April 10, 2009: Anvil! The Story of Anvil opens in limited release
In April 2009 one of my favorite music docs of that era was released. Here is my piece I wrote in 2019. Happy 15 A!TSOA!
April 12, 1994: Live Through This released
In April 1994, Hole magnum opus was released. Here is my piece I wrote in 2014. Happy 30th LTT!
April 12, 2019: Her Smell opens
Speaking of Hole, in April 2019, Elisabeth Moss got her Courtney Love on! Alex Ross Perry constructed an incredible character study of an out-of-control grunge rocker in the 90s at five different times in her life. But it was Moss's envelope-pushing performance that blew the roof off. I mean WOW! She went there in one take for a something wild and crazier than we've seen her do prior or since. I named it my #3 Movie of 2019! Happy 5 Her Smell!
April 14, 1989: Say Anything opens
In April 1989, Cameron Crowe's directorial debut was released. Here is my piece I wrote in 2014. Happy 35th SA!
April 14, 1994: Backbeat opens
In April 1994 one of my favorite Beatle biopics (it takes a lot to get it right) was released. Here is my blu-ray review from 2019. Happy 30th Backbeat!
April 16, 1999: Life opens
In April 1999, Ted Demme's big studio Eddie Murphy / Martin Lawrence comedy was released. Here is my piece I wrote in 2019. Happy 25 Life!
April 16, 2004: Kill Bill Vol. 2 opens
In April 2004, Quentin Tarantino's sequel (or second part of the same whole depending on how you look at it) was released. Here is my piece I wrote in 2019. Happy 20th KBV2!
April 19, 1974: Caged Heat opens
In April 1974, the directorial debut from Jonathan Demme was released. Produced by Roger Corman's company, the film has often been dismissed as another Women-In-Prison movie, but there is a female empowerment stance that Demme had in here that set the tone for many of his later films. I don't think this is by any means his best film, but you can see the potential Demme had to make a bigger movie on a larger budget in the years that followed. Happy 50th CH!
April 24, 1989: Full Moon Fever released
In April 1989, Tom Petty's first solo album was released. Here is my piece I wrote in 2019. Happy 35th FMF!
April 29, 2014: Midnight Sun released
In April 2014, The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger’s masterpiece was released. In Feb. 2015, I named it my #1 Album of 2014. Then both The GOASTT and their leader Sean Lennon retweeted it and thanked me! Here is my piece I wrote in 2019. Happy 10 Midnight Sun!

250 - Her Smell
We've come up on another anniversary episode of This Had Oscar Buzz, and we've got another favorite that long-time listeners have heard us praise before: 2019's Her Smell. Debuting on at TIFF 2018, the Alex Ross Perry film is a daring and ambitious take on the riot grrrls of the early 1990s. Starring Elisabeth Moss as Becky Something, an addict egomaniac who brings her own downfall, the film audaciously immerses us in Becky's destruction (and later climb out of it) in ways that are exhausting and rewarding. Earning stratospheric praise for Moss by even the film's most frustrated viewers, the film was cursed to a microrelease and stayed an Oscar outsider despite vocal critical support.
This episode, we talk about the audacity of both Perry's film and Moss' performance. We also get into the depressing state of independent distribution, Perry's open comments regarding its release and support for Moss' performance, and the Gotham Awards.
Topics also include the film's fake album covers, our appreciation for difficult characters, and our superlatives for the past year of the podcast.
But perhaps most exciting is two bits of news right at the top: our new theme music by Taylor Cole and our newly launched Patreon!! Please consider subscribing and joining us for This Had Oscar Buzz: Turbulent Brilliance over at patreon.com/thishadoscarbuzz!!

"When you walk past me and I catch a whiff of your smell, ooh girl.. I want to tear your clothes from your body piece by piece to reveal the mysteries of your delicious scent."
You smell so good.. I could unwrap you like a gift, ten kisses and a hug you get whenever I get a whiff - eUë

Finally got round to watching Her Smell which is a film about a fictional all girl grunge band called Something She. Elisabeth Moss plays the lead singer, Becky Something with Agyness Deyn + Gayle Rankin playing the other band members. There's also an up + coming band called the Akergirls which features Cara Delevingne plus Amber Heard as singer Zelda E. Zekiel. Becky has drug problems + behaves badly + crashes & burns before staging a comeback of sorts (and that's essentially the movie).
Elisabeth Moss is great in the role (even if it does feel like she's channelling Courtney Love) and there's a great supporting cast but the film does feel a bit aimless altho' it comes alive in the scenes where the band are performing. (There's a great cover version of Another Girl, Another Planet). I also loved the fact that the end titles show all the imaginary releases from the bands/singers featured in the film.

#other good ones are crocuses and lilacs#one time I was ill and depressed and my mum brought me a lil milk bottle full of fresh cut sweet peas from her garden 💖#i like that theyre colourful and i like climbing plants and they smell amazing#posts brought to you by me going to the park on my lunch break just to see all the crocuses

Her Smell is fucking amazing. wow. tour de force performance by Elizabeth Moss.
writing, cinematography, editing, music, etc also all extremely effective
#also Dan Stevens is v. hot in this. i didn't get it during downton abbey but now i do#her smell#her smell (2018)#films#also it's weird that Cara Delevingne gets second billing in this. was she that famous in 2018?#because it's a relatively small part. not tiny but i'd give her like 8th billing
